Well it’s different when you married to a former waiter. I used to be one and you can’t tell how much tipping helps waiters get off a lot. I can agree with you that it doesn’t have to be on percentage, it must not be all the time but just try and tip even when you get bad service; best believe you are getting good service next time.

I took my boyfriend out to dinner for his birthday. It was so funny to watch the waitress flirt, touch his arm and basically kiss his ass. (obviously, hoping for a big tip) She practically ignored me.
Imagine how her face looked when she brought the bill over to him, and I grabbed it and pulled a wad of cash out of my jeans ..... lol....she flirted with the wrong person!!!

Yep. I've had that same sinario occur with me n my ex bf several times. He practically begged me to leave her a tip...cause he felt bad she was being so nice to him n he couldn't Impress her by tipping since I was the one spending. Needless to say, I'm no longer I'm that relationship. It was too one sided.

I’m sure when ur at restaurant and that plate is brought to you you have other request you expect the server to complete, if you just got handed ur food like at a cashier ofc you don’t tip but when u sit somewhere a now expect people to come SERVE you especially knowing that they don’t get minimum wage then you should tip if not take ur food to go stupid.

Agree w the guy 100%. Most Asia countries provide the best services and they don’t really ask for tips. Japan has no tipping and other major Asia cities take 10% tip max and they provide excellent services. Don’t expect me to tip u 20% while u didn’t do sh*t.

It's the same in France. We don't have this culture at all. Because servers' salaries don't depend on tipping, they've got their income every month, it's stable. So we, customers, don't have to tip them, even if it was a pretty good service. In fact, it's up to you if you want to tip or not, no obligation at all

Why does it matter? He can be cheap to others but as long as he is generous to you, he is still a good man for you! Why not just enjoy your time and the meal and don't look at the bill so you don't know how much is it and what percentage he tip? It's the employer's responsibility to make sure the waiters get paid properly, not fair to transfer that burden to customers. It's like giving someone a coupon and then judge them to be cheap! It's better to add mandatory service fee on the menu so customer can have a choice and not be judged.

I don't understand the Idea of a tip. It is the restaurant's work to pay all their employees a fair wage. If I start a business, I'd pay my employees and charge my customers accordingly.
I don't get why in the US there's this unwritten "mandatory" tipping culture, while in many other countries the service industry could get by without tipping? 😅

Tipping should never be mandatory and I hope people in the US come to recognize that their real issue is not with the customers but with the restaurants. You should be paid fairly like in many other countries rather than having to rely on flirting with a customer or their moods.

The percentage should rely on the quality of their service, otherwise there’s no incentive to do a good job. However, the servers are likely in more need of the money than the customer.

I don't think anyone should be allowed to tip a waiter. It's up to the person what they want to do with the money. The payment system where a waiter relies on the customer's tip is not a good thing. It needs to be changed. The boss should pay the waiters more.

I tip regardless unless I feel blatantly disrespected like our waiter constantly skips us and helps people in my vicinity. But if they are taking a little longer than your used too but you see em hustling, it could be a situation where they are covering for the a hole waiter who constantly calls out.
Not to mention what is the definition of good service? It sounds to me homeboy is used to getting pampered. I myself am a low maintenance person. So this question can be subjective, cause there are times we don't need to be bothered but you get that waiter whose crazy attentive, but you don't need that.

I honestly don't have any negative thoughts ans judegments against her boyfriend point of view on tipping. In general I think its fine to tip when you have money to spare but you should have to treat it like it's a part of the bill that you must always leave a tip. He's trying to provide for her and save his money to do better things, nothing wrong with that.
Also, I learned that waiters do not depend on their tip to survive. At least in MN, if the waiter earns more tip then their monthly salary, then the employer doesn't have to pay them anything. If the waiter's tips does not exceed their monthly salary, the employer has to pay the waiter their monthly salary.

Tips are earned not expected! If all you did was your basic job, you don’t get extra.
If you can't tip, you can't afford to eat at that restaurant. I'm not a server. But I tip 20% (I don't tip on the tax because the tax goes to the gov). If the service is poor I might tip 10%. For normal service it's 20%. If I can't afford it, I don't go - OR, order something less expensive

the workkplace should give u a fair money and not the custumor u dont tempend on clients… thats an issue from the goverment system. I did not know that there was two types of cheating.
