Jack bakes his first cake in a slow cooker. let's see how it turns out. Recipe is down below.
Jack's sauces can be bought at TheBestSauces.com
Join Jack's cooking community at: plus.google.co...
    Here is the recipe:
1 pkg. Devil's food cake mix
    1 2/3 cups water
    3 eggs
    1/3 cup canola oil
    2 cups cold 2% milk
1 pkg. (3.9 oz) instant chocolate pudding mix
2 cups (12 oz) semisweet chocolate chips
    1. In a large bowl, combine the cake mix, water, eggs and oil; beat on low speed for 30 seconds. Beat on medium for 2 minutes. Transfer to a greased 4 qt. slow cooker.
    2. In another bowl, whisk milk and pudding mix for 2 minutes or until soft-set. Spoon over cake batter; sprinkle with chocolate chips. Cover and cook on high for 3 hours or until a toothpick inserted in cake portion comes out with moist crumbs. Serve warm.
Everyone who tries this dessert falls in love with it. Using a slow cooker liner makes cleanup a breeze.

That's because this is THE WORST attempt at a "chocolate lava cake" that exists. I get the whole "lazy man" concept, but making a real chocolate lava cake is not that difficult. You make some ganache, form it into little balls, freeze it, and drop them in the center of the dishes holding your cake mixture. As it bakes, the ganache melts, turning into the "chocolate lava" of a lava cake.
The hard part is getting the cakes out of whatever you've baked them in without breaking them. An undercooked chocolate cake with a pudding center IS NOT a chocolate lava cake, and it's a recipe for disaster.

If you like to undercook brownies and cookies to get that gooey middle, you will like this. If not, you may see this cake as gross or too gooey. The pudding layer basically ends up cooking underneath the cake and turns saucy (it will thicken as it cools). The bottom of the cake will be saucy and wet-soft as well. You are forewarned. :P Crock Pot has a similar recipe (fudge and cream pudding cake) that uses homemade cake ingredients with a homemade pudding sauce minus any gelatin. Even without cooking this lava cake, I can tell the one I made is not near as rich or chocolatey as this one since it only uses cocoa and not chocolate chips or chocolate cake mix. It just wasn't a hit at our house, though, but good if you only have a few basic ingredients.

It's not a matter of perfection..and someone once told me that anything worth having is worth working for. If putting a couple of cake pans in the oven so that you have a nice presentation is too much work, then go ahead and buy a crock pot to save yourself the hassle and have a psuedo-cake that looks like a bucket of manure. Oh, and remember to get a nice big ladle to serve it with. ;)

It's not necessarily about the amount of calories, but where your calories are coming from and what's in the food. If there is a lot of sugar then chances are most of the calories are coming from the sugar, a simple carbohydrate.

Just letting you know, I'm not the one that brought it up, just shed some light on comments that were being made by other people. It's criticism, his fans shouldn't take it to heart. I love his show.

Definitely not a presentation piece, but it is good. Just like the cobblers & dump cakes made in the slow cooker ~ not going to come out pretty, but just serve straight from the pot.
I LOVE the idea of the liners. I got some too ... what I didn't like was the amount of food wasted getting stuck in or to the bag (there are little folded edges at the bottom...) I made a ham & potato chowder & some of the ham burnt on the sides & some stuck in the creases & it's a pain to get out. I like to scrape out every last bit from the pot. So I am torn. Not have to clean the crock & waste food, or get 99% of the food & have to clean the crock.
I wouldn't recommend the liners, as I don't think it is worth it. my .02.

Well, I lied. I'm making a pot of homemade chicken soup today so I threw all the stuff for this in a crock pot. It should be done around the same time as the soup. I made one change, though. I used cook-n-serve pudding instead of instant. It just didn't seem right to use instant in something that will be cooked. The pudding was very runny when I poured it over the cake batter but we'll see how it turns out.

I see your point, but keep in mind that this show is a business for Jack. His son really hams it up in front of the camera for some reason, and I think that interferes with Jack's vision of what he wants his son to do on the show. That may be a misguided perspective on Jack's view (he could probably stand to let the interaction be more organic), but it's at least understandable that he might be frustrated at Jack Jr. hamming it up on the show instead of providing the feedback Jack asks for.
