This ranking got me really surprised multiple times. I mean, Xillia being so low, even behind LEGENDIA ????? Graces F being above Symphonia ? The number one pick (don't want to spoil it for ppl who didn't watch it yet) ? I do think the game is good but honestly I think the franchise has better games (but that's just me). Zestiria in the top 4 after all of that controversy (in my opinion it isn't that great of a Tales game either) ? A MOBILE GAME IN THE TOP 10 ???????
Im not surprise as much as i love the battle system everything is weak not to mention as a guy that played tales since ps1 i really hate the camera position when your walking on towns.
Zestiria being above Berseria is just crazy, especially by THAT MUCH. Feels like their positions should be switched, honestly. How the hell did Zestiria get that high up?
Tales of Symphonia is what got me into the Tales of series and that title will always be nostalgic for me. I can't even count how many times I replayed it on the Gamecube - basically why my that darn machine got its money's worth tbh. Xillia was also one of my favorites! I've also heard that everyone loved Vesperia too which I have yet to complete on the Switch, but I can definitely see why people love it so much. ALSO, I wanted to like Zestria so darn much but the battle camera made it so unplayable for me, however Berseria was chef's kiss.
I really liked zestiria. It’s a strange game they changed some mechanics around that a lot didn’t like. Some characters could be extremely annoying. But on thing it does I’ve never really seen another tales game do was create a story through some really good lore. I was happy to see berseria come out and show the origins of the world.
Zestiria is mostly rich in lore of its world and its good characters, to some extent. Aside from that Zestiria's story is filled with odd plot conveniences and contrivances that are used to move the plot forward. It's odd because during its controversies it was one of the most poorly regarded games at the time so to see it so high up is definitely surprising. I do feel like its high ranking is because of its characters, and probably the anime which deviated from the game's plot...and probably the mobile games that featured the characters as well, i don't know, just guesses though.
I haven't played Zestiria, and this is the first time I'm really hearing anything good about it. The only good things I've ever heard about it is having a couple good characters, but that's it. Personally, one video praising it in a mountain of criticism isn't something that makes me want to play it. But that's just me. Coming from Berseria being my first Tales game, I just know I'd be disappointed based on what I've heard.
I personally skipped Zestiria as well, but after playing Berseria, I could appreciate it a lot more. I felt like Berseria helped tie up some of the lore in Zestiria that at the time didn't make sense. Also, a fair warning, the dialog in Zestiria is pretty cringe. It really kills immersion to have characters using words such as "totes" and using "like" the way a valley girl would. That was probably my biggest critique besides the armor system being needlessly convoluted.
It ranked high not because of the game quality, but because how wildly popular Mikleo is as a character, helped by his very yaoi shippable strong bonds with Sorey. Fr fujoshi is a very terrifying powerhouse in any fandom! Also in Japan character likability is above all else, so yeah.
Probably due to the return to the more original Tales atmosphere of the earlier games (lots of nature, happy colours) they have warm/nostalgic feelings for, compared to what Xillia turned out to be. Also character popularity.
One reason: Mikleo is so damn popular. And Sorey/Mikleo shipping. Well, two reason then. (But fr never ever underestimate fujoshi and their love for their favorite shipping in propping any fandom up) But yes the commenter above me said it all. Japanese fans are among people that doesn't like changes, and Zestiria being back to happy-toned story (even if rather bland) gives it another plus in JP Tales fans' book.
Tales of the Abyss makes a lot of sense, honestly. It's one of the few games that, when it pulls the, you won the fight but lose the cutscene, something this franchise loves to Lloyd to you...I mean do to you, it usually explains itself well. The bad guys don't just go 'ha ha! that battle didn't count' that go. 'You won, but you're gonna let me go because I can kill us both, and unlike you, I don't give a damn if I die, but you do', something they pull out on four different occasions, and it always makes sense, both why you fought them, and why they don't pull it out earlier. That don't CARE if they die, but none of them WANT to die quite yet either. All in all, the pacing, characters, and even the twist, a typical thing for the franchise, screams that a lot of love and effort were packed into this. I also think it has the most well realized world, as they have a real functional society with magic at its core nine times out of ten, rather than just, some fantasy culture, and oh there's magic.
My favourites are Graces F and XIllia 2. Graces for it's characters, skits, an incredible postgame story and the best combat in the series. Xillia 2 for Ludger, very fun combat mechanics, and for one of the darkest stories in the franchise. Vesperia, Abyss, Xillia 1 and Berseria are also up there for different reasons. Zestiria was good, but the Armatize system really broke the endgame combat. Arise brought the series into a new age, so to speak, but I wasn't a huge fan of the actual overworld maps.
Xillia 1+2 being as low as they are is shocking, would have thought they would be in the top 10. Zestiria really shocked me. Not to say we all had my experience but I just couldn't manage to finish it. I played through most of it and just couldn't keep going. Just didn't interest me much outside of the characters. Only other thing I would have done is put Symphonia and Vesperia a bit higher. Vesperia just has a loveable cast of characters, a story to remember and a lot of end game content to mess with meanwhile I remember Symphonia being one that a lot of people talked about while I was growing up but never heard about any other. But this is opinions and what not so everyone has their own take on it and they are all valid. I am just surprised.
I took me so long to beat zesteria. It may be the only one that I eventually just gave up and streamlined no side quests or extra stuff. I had to finish it but I couldn’t do extras
Xillia is way lower than I thought it would be, and that kind of surprised me. It's my third favorite behind Abyss and the first Symphonia (which I also thought might score just a little higher). I was very touched and happy to see the love for Eternia. It's in my top 5 and feels like an underrated game sometimes. Once the list started climbing up, I thought, "Wow, it's gonna be up there, but probably just behind Phantasia since that's the first game". But it surprised me by one-upping it on this list.
i like where abyss is placed, it has the most interesting second playthrough of all tales games because of luke. still, i wonder if the devs these days used the cathedral of daath as reference for the modern tales games terrible dungeon designs.
@@nezkeys79I think that Arise has the best gameplay imo. It's the reason I love playing the game(I have almost 650 hours) I rly don't care about story in games, the gameplay is the most important thing to me. But Vesperia is 2nd. I havent rly played any other of the games.
Neat to see Japanese fans considering Abyss to be their favorite 💕 Thou I'm surprised how Zestiria is ranked so high despite how controversial it was for Japanese fans, still I think the game is ok but very flawed imo
Tales of the Abyss is hands down the best Tales game and I'm really glad it placed the way it did. I'm glad Phantasia got some love too cuz that one so great. A lot of the others were shocking like Zestiria being so high and even beating out Berseria or Xillia being low but not everyone gonna agree so that's OK lol. Personally I'll say Abyss > Vesperia > Berseria but I can see where most of this ranking works. At least we can agree on Abyss :)
So proud to see Abyss at number 1. My first and fave Tales of series. Personally, it has the best storyline among other tales of Ive played (Vesperia, Symphonia, Arise).
@@nezkeys79and whats wrong with that? Not everyone can play every game in a series, especially if they have to buy older consoles. I on,y really played 3 of them
@@nezkeys79what I meant was, I literally can't play all of them, since I don't own all of the require consoles, plus the games needed. So I think you was being kinda judgemental there. 🤔. And besides, that would cost a TON of money to do. It's the same case for persona, for example. Kind of. Back then, I could had only played p5s, since I happened to have a ps4, and I had ps gold. And back then, most persona games where only on playstation, when I usually play on xbox. But it wasn't since recently, that a couple of persona games where playable on xbox(p5r, p3p, p4g, p3r and p5t) and besides, you dont have to play every game in a series to be a fan of them. You see, I thought that vesperia was decent, but very flawed. And for p5s, I found the gameplay to be extremely good, but kinda flawed back then
@@Hyp3rSonicI assume the three you have played are Arise, Berseria, and Zestiria? Symphonia remastered and Vesperia exist on ps4. PS3 has four games that are all accessible and not ridiculously expensive (Symphonia 2, Xillia, Xillia 2, and Graces F). Outside of that yes they're annoying to play outside of emulation but that's at least 8 games you can play.
For so long I thought I was the only person who thought TotA was the best tales game and probably one of the best JRPGs ever made. Im glad to see im not crazy lol
I’m proud that my fave Tales of Abyss got the top spot. That was overall really impressive for me and had been my standard ever since. I’m surprised though that Eternia was that loved (which I really like as well). I thought people would rank others above it. I agree that Arise should be in the middle or even a bit lower. Much of it is all over the place. The graphical improvement was nice though. Zestiria was surprising as well considering what I know of people’s opinions about it. Personally, as much as there are many questionable things in the story, the story itself was easy to follow or not convoluted. Also, it might be my favorite battle system and the dynamics between the characters are great. I still think it should be lower in the list though.
Abyss is my favorite Tales game thanks to one scene (SPOILERS) After Luke sinks the town , the other characters, one by one, berate him for being such an idiot and spoiled brat. It's simultaneously painful and hilarious because Luke DID have good intentions, and trusted the guy who told him to do it, but you the player had to do it to advance the story and now you have to rebuild trust and respect with your party. It's poignant and transgressive to the usual JRPG character dynamics.
I really liked Abyss because it is one of the few JRPGs which had me go through a rollercoaster of emotions with regards to how I felt about it's main character: meh, he's alright --> holy shit this guy is annoying, quick being a baby --> come on dude you can do it! Get there girl!
There are also little moments of Luke being his old self in skits showing that he hasn’t completely changed. He’s trying but it’ll take time lol It was really subtle writing.
I understand TotA being this highly rated, but while I personally loved playing ToZ, I find it super weird that it apparently gets this much love. Also, ToB seems to be awfully low for how good it is. It's nice to see some love for ToGf. It's far from a perfect game, but definitely one of my favorites. I've played ToV and I never understood why people like it so much, I guess I just dislike Yuri. I hope we'll eventually get more ports for modern systems, ToGf is literally the only reason I even still own a PS3.
My first tales game was Vesperia because it was on sale for the switch and I loved it because of Yuri haha. Got Zestria on thr PS4 since it was on sale but whenever I turn that thing on I go straight to P5R. Will have to give it a try now too.
its because people are going through the "at least its not as bad as arise" phase as soon as a new game comes along the love will fade trust me its like this with fandoms everytime a divisive game is released people started to stop bashing FFXIII when FFXV came around as well its as predictable as it gets with these groups.
Berseria and Vesperia are more loved in the west it seems, I remember someone telling me that the tales of series fan base in Japan was full of fujoshi and I think that is why Zestiria is so high because I can’t see any other reason. And this is coming from someone who likes Zestiria but it isn’t better than Berseria, Xillia 1/2 and Vesperia by any means.
I haven't played enough of the series to fairly rank the whole thing, but a few placements surprised me. The biggest ones probably being Legendia above Xillia, Zestiria above Berseria, and Zestiria being in the top ten period. My ranking the games I've played goes something like this, taking both gameplay and story into consideration: 1. Berseria 2. Abyss 3. Graces F (almost entirely for the gameplay mind you) 4. Symphonia 5. Vesperia 6. Arise 7. Xillia 8. Zestiria 9. Legendia 10. Dawn of the New World I really need to play more of the games to round it out. I'm particularly in interested in the original version of Hearts, Innocence R, Eternia, and Rebirth.
Woohoo! My favorite Tales game is top dog! Quite interesting how low some of the newer titles are, quite honestly, but then again, I don't think -as- much heart goes into them as they used to. I just wish Bamco could do more rereleases of older titles, the top rated one only has one other rerelease (thank GOD I grabbed a copy before the 3DS shutdown got announced, it's going for 30-60+ on sites these days) and Bamco recently has a hard-on for hating the west (Harder than usual I mean. The Tales of gachas always seem to get shutdown within a year, think the second one got 2 as a stand-alone story), considering you couldn't even SEE the Klonoa rereleases before launch, let alone pre-order them.
Abyss had one of the best storyline and twist. The ending was so sad. I remember playing it almost 20 years ago and boy did I almost quit because I hated the MC. Then the twist happened and I was shook. I was so young and wasn't exposed to games with such insane and tragic storyline. If I could choose top 5 games that changed definitely shaped my gaming life, ToA is definitely in there.
As an American my favorites were 1. Tales of Xilla 2 (4 playthrough lol) 2. Tales of Arise 3. Tales of Graces f 4. Tales of Heart R 5. Tales of Symphonia 2
I have only played 4 games so far but I would rank them like this: 1. Berseria 2. Arise 3. Symphonia(still need to finish it) 4. Zestiria I have played all these on PC and I am very surprised by Zestiria's high ranking. When I played it I experienced a lot of bugs(mainly the camera being slow and not even having my active character in view). I honestly think Zestiria was released too early and they should have taken time to bugfix and optimize so it might be worthy of that high ranking(because seriously why does it take more than 1 second to open the menu, the game looks like it froze if you accidentally pressed the open menu button until it opened). To me personally it wasn't all that memorable story and character wise either but that is subjective.
I haven't played Zestiria myself, but it's important to keep in mind that Japan doesn't have near as much of a PC gaming market as other places. If only the PC version is really buggy (I wouldn't know, but it's a pretty reasonable thing to happen), then it won't have any negative impact on the Japanese fandom's opinion on the game.
Looking at combat only Arise is awful, even as a standalone arpg. Symphonia is also dated and not as good as zestiria. Both berseria and zestiria are better than symphonia combat wise. As for story this is more subjective imo as all 3 have decent storylines Music wise Zestiria is at the top of the pile along with legendia In terms of progression systems / customization zestiria and berseria systems kinda suck, but so does field of fonons. Crafting accessories in Arise is also pretty stale even if its better than zestiria and berseria Games like Xillia and Graces F just get everything right
@@nezkeys79interesting, I think that Arise and Berseria have the best gameplay by far. But im only here for the gameplay. I do agree that symphonia is probably outdated, since its a 2000s game, and I did watch many review of it. Oh, and Vesperia has good gameplay
I'm also surprised by Zestiria being so high, but also vindicated. I don't know why I picked that one, but it's my first foray into the series. At 30 hours in, I'm loving it. Everything about that game is overcomplicated and underexplained. Its a big drawback, but if you actually figure out how to use it's systems, it's a fun game to play. You just may have to look somewhere other than in game tutorials 😂. I'm Looking forward to playing more of these games.
I found a bunch of JRPGs at a yard sale about 10/15 years ago, I sold em all.. they had Suikoden 2 (spelling) and it was surprisingly good! I beat it then sold it for like 40 bucks. No joke it may still be worth way more than usual used. Anyhow I'm looking for an English game willing to try these out.. which should I start with? I'm on ps4 now.
I would've ranked it: 1 abyss 2 vesperia 3 arise 4 berseria 5 graces f 6 xilla 7 symohinia 8 xillia 2 9 eternia 10 destiny 11 phantasia 12 zestiria 13 legendia I couldnt rank the others as i never got to play them. Lol
Nice, Japan agrees with me about Zesteria, I never understood the hate, and I thought the fusion mechanic made for the best combat in the series in my humble opinion.
It got boost in popularity because Mikleo is so damn popular and so is Sorey/Mikleo shipping. Fujoshis and their love for their yaoi otp is really terrifying when it comes to propping up an IP's popularity in Japan. Fr it's fujoshis and their love for yaoi ships that saved OG Gundam from obscurity.
best overall : tales of arise. best combat : hands down tales of graces f. these two are the best tales experience i ever felt (i already tried it all and nothing strike quite as graces f and arise).
I can't see a single comment talking about Tales of Eternia, it easily being my most played, and probably my absolute favorite Tales game. I'm very happy that the Japanese fans share my opinion
i have played and completed 11 main Tales Of titles ...it is without a doubt my favorite RPG series ! this is my personal ranking ...(1) Tales of Vesperia. (2) Tales of the Abyss. (3) Tales of Xillia 2. (4) Tales of Symphonia. (5) Tales of Graces f . (6) Tales of Legendia (7) Tales of Xillia (8) Tales of Zestiria (9) Tales of Berseria (10) Tales of Arise (11) Tales of Symphonia 2
Tales of the abyss was my first tales of ever. After that, I played most of the games on the top 10, hoping to find something that would vaguely remind me of the masterpiece abyss was. Too bad I was left nearly disappointed all times, although I could say the one I enjoyed the most was Graces F, but still very far from the great story and charismatic characters abyss has. I was so happy to see it in #1! Btw, I seriously don't understand why everybody seems to love Vesperia so much, it's the one I enjoyed the least. Completely overrated in my opinion. Also I was hyped af for Zestiria, and the game is ok, but the story I expected as I was playing it was far better than the one we actually got, it's a shame. It had so much potential.
I enjoy them both for different reasons. But I do think Berseria is the better game overall. The characters in Berseria are top-notch. I really liked the color of the cast, with such variety but never clashing.
I would've rated Xillia higher. But considering the damn game only came out for the PS3 with no remaster or re-release or been able to play it anywhere else since PS4 and 5 don't have backwards compatibility. Vesperia is one my favorite and is the most balanced for me, as in, I like all the characters, the story and the gameplay. While other have either character I don't like, I characters I love with a world or story that I'm not a fan, or dislike. Or great characters and story with a gameplay that fall short. And one of my favorite main character. OMG I was getting nervous that Eternia didn't made the list. I absolutely love that game. And making the full list. Yeah, I would've definitely put Xillia higher.
I played majority of the Tales games and Zesty was the only one I dropped due to the many issues surrounding it. Am very surprised it scored even higher than Xillia 1 & 2, Symphonia, Graces, Arise and Vesperia?? Now I'm really interested for a global fans ranking on where Zesty stands
@@mee7er I agree with you man. Berseria literally fixed majority of the issues from zesty and it scored lower in the poll. I think it's because zesty has garnered alot of votes from the fujoshi and yaoi fans due to the sorey and mickleo bromance lol
That moment when Another Eden did so many collabs with Tales of Series, and the maker of Another Eden is the same as Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, Xenogears, and even Final Fantasy 7. As a result, it's the closet gacha game to a JRPG non-gacha experience, like it gives so many strong 5 star for free and MC is 5 star too, and can even explore the world but in 2.5D. But I bet alot still doesn't know cause of how underrated the game is. Lol XD That collab being (from last to first in this video list) #17 Tales of Xillia, #13 Tales of Arise, #11 Tales of Berseria, #8 Tales of Symphonia, #5 Tales of Vesperia, #3 Tales of Phantasia. That's 6, but 8 playable instead. And the game has no events, meaning you could get all of them even now, that also mean they don't need to hold back either so some of them are super strong despite being free. 2 collab though, 4 of them is together, and other 2 is together, 4 characters per collab which make it 8. They done a collab with Chrono Cross too which make sense cause same maker, and few of the main cast is from Chrono Trigger which is even better than collab cause you'll get to see alot in the story even years later. Yet the game is underrated, lol XD Also from what I heard, either #13 Tales of Arise or #5 Tales of Vesperia is fans favorite, and I also heard people tend to like Xillia 1 more than Xillia 2 too, so I'm surprised to see Japan see them differently. Lol XD
I really think ARISE deserve top 3... it was a step up from any TALES we have seen... im pretty happy with the TOP 1 tho... ABYSS was the best, although not perfect, its the best STORY that BAMCO has ever given us... it was DARK, there were light moments, the pacing was right, GAME does a great explanation of the lore and the world... especially the characters... BAMCO outdid itself on that SERIES....
The setting and worldbuilding in Arise is great--until about halfway through the game. Also halfway through the game, I lost all care for the characters because they just seemed like marionettes that the writers were parading around, rather than living people in the world.
Thematically it’s not a subtle game. But after seeing how fucking bonkers humans can behave in real life I don’t really knock points off for characters being one dimensional. I also really enjoyed the escalation of stakes. It got so absurd that I couldn’t help but enjoy it.
@@mee7er Many also HATED ABYSS because of its MAIN CHARACTER which annoys most gamers... so yeah give and take... I just think that ARISE is a BIG STEP UP after BERSERIA in my take... its really about time BAMCO uses UE5 on their games..
I... I disagree with the placement of the Xillia games in my opinion they're much better than some of the higher ranked games in there. I *highly* disagree with the presence of the mobile game in the litteral top 10 I am confused with Zestiria's placement i thought this game was considered a very mediocre release but i guess Japan really enjoyed it ? I'm Proud of Abyss placement is all I'm gonna say even i am surprised because it is heavy in backtracking, Edit _a year later_: So the mobile game Luminaria got plugged out, it was already crazy that it got this high despite being very recent at the time of that game release but beside that I'm very surprised Rays which is, imo, a more faithful Tales of experience on mobile, didn't make it in this list... I suppose the japanese are very picky about their gacha
For Zestiria, it wasn't so much that it was considered mediocre by Japanese fans, rather they were upset that Alisha wasn't the main heroine despite being the first female cast member shown off in marketing leading up to the game's release, which angered fans. The game itself was actually well received over there.
@@RozalinGaming I was also angered by that. I love spear wielders, so I was excited to see the first heroine holding one. Then, that thing replaced her...
Tales of Vesperia is my Favorite I guess? I say “I guess“ because of the fact that it is really the only tells game that I’ve ever really played very very far into but still have not beat… But I’m also playing tales of the abyss on my 3DS..
@@aceman2k320 Yeah I like tales of the best OK I guess I just really don’t like the main character… no surprise there I guess, he just seems like a whiny little stuck up brat? I’m also playing towers of Fantasia right now on the game boy advance and so far I’m really liking that game?! Thanks for your input and I also completely agree with what you’re saying about Tales of Vesperia.. but I was really enjoying it up into the part where I’m in the woods and I got a fight this big gorilla boss and he just slaughters my whole party despite the fact that I have been grinding my ass off!!!
Firstly, I laugh at how low both Xillia games placed for being so liked everywhere else. Secondly, I'm surprised at how high Zestiria is given the whole "gonna hide the rest of the story in dlc or something" issue it had. Things to note for me personally are that 1) Tales of the Tempest is on the list and it isn't dead last, 2) this definitely is a jp list with Crestoria and Luminaria on the list (surprised Rays isn't here for how long it has been around) 3) I'm mostly okay with what's in the top 10 (I'd put Legendia at 10 or slightly below though). Lastly, would you happen to have a link to the article itself? Edit: Nevermind, found it in the description. Thanks.
The issue Zestiria had, at least for the Japanese audience, was that they expected Alisha to be the main heroine since she was the first female character revealed in marketing, and fans were upset when she wasn't. Outside of that, the game was very well received in Japan, especially by the female fanbase.
@@RozalinGaming Oh, I see. Huh, not quite bait and switch but more a mistake is the order of appearance perhaps. What was the issue the female fans had with Zestiria? This is all new news to my ears.
@@nicodalusong149 It wasn't even a mistake; Bandai just showed off the characters in order of how they are met in the story so Alisha was the first female, and despite never saying she was the heroine fans assumed she was. Females in Japan didn't have any issues with Zesitira, it was more popular amongst them than males, though both groups generally liked the game. What drew the female crowd in the most though were the VAs for the male characters.
@@RozalinGaming Oh, okay. So there were expectations the fans had in their minds about the whole thing. Given how that actually is the case in most other Tales games, I can see why they'd think it would be the same case for Zestiria. Well, I guess that's a lesson in keeping track of what tropes one makes staple for one's own series. Probably have to switch it up every so often to avoid folks from thinking this way.
No kidding, I´m also surprised that Zestiria is in a top ranking. I mean, is not a terrible game, it has good stuff like a nice map design, good soundtrack and good characters design. But the story kinda felt questionable. At first it was ok, but after half of it it feels like it goes no where and they put random events to reach the final boss, not to mention that the ending and that DLC chapter was also odd (like, why is that there?), and the main character didn´t got me, I didn´t felt at all a character development. If you compare him from the beginning to the end, it´s pretty much the same dude and same thoughts and personality. I actually believed that the anime version is way better than the game. But I must agreed that Abyss is the winner, I felt like that as my third Tales game and became my top favorite. Love the characters, the story is vast and well developed with its universe and logics in the world, and the battle system was amaizing for that time. Wish they could re port the game >w< From my perspective I would put in top 3: 1. Tales of the Abyss: A great story frpm beginning to the end, with a descent battle system with the FOF system, cool audio effects and music, and good character development. 2. Tales of Vesperia: A clean and coloful art direction with great designs, pretty magic effects and a nice level of difficulty to present a good challenge in battle. 3. Tales of Symphonia: Memorable characters with a memorable story with such strong message about discrimination, and a peculiar and unique antagonist that you get the feels with. And a perfect ending to the story.
Im suprised that Xillia is so low even lower than Xillia 2 also Berseria missing the top 10 in my mind its one of the best so missing the top 10 is shocking
@@reinsama2.09ok? I dont think it's terrible, but its ok if you think it is. Doesn't make its the "correct" opinion, is what I am sensing from your comment, which.. why? 💀. Like. I respect your opinion, but still
Arise was good, but it felt like the writer for the story changed halfway through the game for the last stretch. Like it was rushed together. The story could of done much better from the water lord on. And the game could of done with multiple endings and maybe an extra party member or two to add some color to the cast. I also would of been completely cool with Alphen being an amnesiac to the end. As for the gameplay. I loved it quite a bit. I did hate the craft system and having same materials with randomized abilities. And I LOL'd when I saw it have SAO dlc that was about as expensive has half the games price. I knew it was not worth it. So overhyped and overrated.
Glad to see some criticism for Tales of Arise. I found many faults within the game, especially in the characters (ahem, SHIONNE!). But you put it perfectly when you said the writers seemingly changed halfway through the game. The first two zones were amazing, but after that--no. It fell off a cliff in so many ways and never recovered.
@@thefalsehero there was a cutscene in the snow town that totally just left me stunned at the stupidity. Got to the next place with the last two characters then quickly abandoned ship.
@@omensoffate You mean teh slap scene? Yeah, I'm currently writing the script for a youtube video that will be titled "Tales of Arise - How to Ruin a Character". Of course, it's talking about Shionne and the slap scene.
@@omensoffate Good to me is it was fun to waste time in. I do not just use story as the major deciding factor. I love stories. But if the world is fun to explore and I have more then 1 thing to do, I will take it over something that is clunky, slow and one trick shows. I have played some really shitty games. Is Arise amazing? No. But its better then bad. I did dislike the skits layout for the conversations myself. And I had to question the competence of the npc's way more then once. And also for the writing I want to know if they seriously read the script before approving it. Did no one in the process of it really not question or call out anything?
Eternity, World, Xilia1&2 were my favorites. Every TalesOf game I played after Xilia lost my interest after an hour of playing. Playing Arise now and it's fantastic so far !!
muh female protagonist!!!!!!!! haha jk cool vid bro. subbed! I'm just getting into the series with Tales of Arise and really enjoying it. Already bought Vesperia and the other Zestiria (spelling?). Can't wait to keep playing ; P I'm watching your other vids!
I am glad to see that I am not the only one that thought Tales of Vesperia was heavily overrated by western audience. Yes it had the coolest MC and a likeable team. But the storyline was so bland, villains were all forgettable, and the soundtrack was mediocre compared to other tales games. I think it was just extremely popular in the West because people were obsessed with the MC and most western fans never got to play the earlier Tales games due to lack of localization.
Well, Abyss is in my top 3 for sure, dare even #1 for same reason, the story was great...got a jerk main character and watch him grow and be less of a jerk over the course of the adventure, and his interactions with the rest, especially Jade/ Vesperia is also in my top 3, and Graces, mostly liked the characters, especially Pascal. Berseria os high too, also lot to the characters and their interactions within the party members.
The order of the top ten (and some titles in it…) is pure madness. Zestiria being 4 is insane due to how it’s so divisive online. It’s one of my least favorite Tales games personally.
Keep in mind this is the Japanese fan's opinions. Zestiria is highly divisive in the western community but generally well received in Japan (minus it's original release controversy about Alisha).
Legendia is the one tales game i feel like needs a new remake. The story is there but only having half voiced story in english kinda sucks. Plus idk im cool with phantasias battle system but legendia just feels weird
I don't know how I feel about Berseria being ranked lower than Zesteria. My opinion may be skewed because of the combat system though (I feel Zesteria's cast were made out of paper Machete because BOY did they die easily) I also feel a little off about both Xillia games being so low, however I do see a large number of those ranked higher than them do make sense. All that said I do wish that they remade Phantasia with a modern system. I could see a few of these being a Japanese opinion on things compared to a western view. My top 3 games at this point are (in no specific order) Abyss, Graces F and Destiny R+ special edition. Abyss has such a great development for the cast, Graces was so compelling and Destiny was the game I enjoyed so much I keep asking for more (sad that Arise didn't give Alphen and Dohalim Stahn and Leon costumes and arts... It would have completed the references in the move sets) I feel the arise Cameo costumes should have all come with a new attack that triggered an alternate Mystic arte.
I feel the Arise cameos mostly fit... Confused on Shionne but that is acceptable mostly because few gun users. Artes I could have seen Alphen getting a new arte like Blazing Beast (it is a arte Stan usually has) with Either Stans Lv3 Burst Arte or his last boss killer. For the MA. Shionne since Velvet is already there I could see her Devour critical edge as a close range thing (or laughing raven as an anti-air ground attack) leading to Her L2 MA. Point blank with the gun to then shoot them away. Rinwell. Since Rita and since she already got a fireball I would have used maybe Spread Zero (the only other attack Rita uses out of combat... But since that would clash with the element chart messing with lore I think Rita's Burst Arte would work. And have ancient Catastrophe would also line up with Rinwell's casting prowess.
Law is a little harder I think a modified snap pivot would be cool... But I am not partial to Final Fury since that is so over done. I personally would have thought to use Eizen for the costume and used gale fist and his level 3. Kisara as she is with Flynn does kinda work because shield and armor. She got a bunch of his moves already which makes this hard for a new move. His standard Burst Arte could work or maybe his earth variant and his first MA could have still worked. Dohalim I feel with Leon's stuff could have just added Demon Lance Zero and gone into his Special edition Lv3 MA.
And since I changed 2 Alphen with the Luger stuff I feel he could have had 1 of Lugers Dual blades techniques disintegration for a nice rapid slice into the Eternal Waltz would be cool. And Dohalim could have had either a Jade Spell or Melee. My thoughts go to energy blast and Mystic Cage. Giving him a non-elemental spell would be interesting.
This is quite a shocking list. Luminaria is really only Tales in name imo. The gameplay is atrocious. I'm very surprised how highly ranked it is. Also very surprised at Zestiria. Berseria is also somewhat low for such a strong story. Also interesting that Tales of the Rays isn't in the list, even though it's the longest lasting Mobile game in the franchise.
Tales of the Abyss will forever be my fav in the series the characters development is beyond beautiful in this game
Being a dick to a crybaby sure is best character development
Abyss was my second tales game none have topped it yet I plan on playing symphonia next when it comes too switch I hear its good
And it has the best opening song on the entire series! There’s no single moment where I skipped the opening 😊
Agreed
Legendia is the best Tales game ever.
Graces F tied with Symphonia actually.
Zestiria being above Berseria is just crazy, especially by THAT MUCH. Feels like their positions should be switched, honestly. How the hell did Zestiria get that high up?
Its only just 1400 votes so it hardly means anything tbh
Ahhh number one spot did not disappoint, abyss had the most engaging story I'll clap to that
My personal top 5 in the series:
-Berseria
-Abyss
-Symphonia
-Xillia
-Phantasia
You sir are a gentleman and a scholar. My your great tastes in RPG spread around the World.
Which is number 1 for you
@@hardbodytraining100 Berseria for me had such a kicka$$ story 😄
@@act110mort048 I just got tales of xillia. My 1st tale of... game. Did you play trails of cold steel?
@@hardbodytraining100 Xillia had a great story too. I haven't played Cold Steel, but I heard great reviews about it!
So glad to see that #1 pick as it was my favorite as well.
TotA being first i agree i dunno there is something about that game that still sets it apart from the rest
So, uhh, where's the remake / remaster of Tales of the Abyss BAMCO?
I know right!?
We will get it when they have released Symphonia 8K ReReRemastered, or maybe not
I hope this list makes Namco consider an Abyss rerelease/remaster...
Well it certainly has a higher chance than other games since it sold pretty well and is well-liked.
I love Zestiria and I'm happy to see it so high!
They even used Sorey's theme in the 2020 olympics! So I'm not the only one who loves him! :)
Me too. ^_^
That what i talk about
Tales of Symphonia is what got me into the Tales of series and that title will always be nostalgic for me.
Zestiria being so high in rank really surprised me. I originally skipped it but if it's supposedly one of the best I might give it a go
I really liked zestiria.
I will never understand why Japan loves Zestiria so much.
Props for them putting Abyss at 1 tho
Probably due to the return to the more original Tales atmosphere of the earlier games (lots of nature, happy colours) they have warm/nostalgic feelings for, compared to what Xillia turned out to be. Also character popularity.
One reason: Mikleo is so damn popular. And Sorey/Mikleo shipping. Well, two reason then. (But fr never ever underestimate fujoshi and their love for their favorite shipping in propping any fandom up)
But yes the commenter above me said it all.
I also think it has the most well realized world, as they have a real functional society with magic at its core nine times out of ten, rather than just, some fantasy culture, and oh there's magic.
tales of the abyss supremacy baby
If only they port them to switch
Abyss is the best for sure. the Field of Phonons and the Capacity Core system was great. Wish they would port it for the PS5
Wow i'm surprised with Xillia being 17 and Xillia 2 being 12. I really enjoyed them both! Also, that number 1 pick?! Madness!
Tales of the abyss def has the best story though gameplay aside
Both Xillia and Xillia 2 are peak tales imo along with Graces F. Arise is total garbage
@@nezkeys79I think that Arise has the best gameplay imo. It's the reason I love playing the game(I have almost 650 hours) I rly don't care about story in games, the gameplay is the most important thing to me. But Vesperia is 2nd. I havent rly played any other of the games.
@@Hyp3rSonic650 hours on Arise 😮
@@Hyp3rSonic Gameplay/combat peaked in Xillia 2. From there it went downhill.
Neat to see Japanese fans considering Abyss to be their favorite 💕 Thou I'm surprised how Zestiria is ranked so high despite how controversial it was for Japanese fans, still I think the game is ok but very flawed imo
Tales of the Abyss will always be my top pick. Symphonia and Berseria are 2 and 3. Crestoria's story is also right there, too.
This ranking seems so bizarre to me. I didn't expect Xillia to be so low. Or Zestiria to be so high.
3 games? That's all you've played?
@@nezkeys79and whats wrong with that? Not everyone can play every game in a series, especially if they have to buy older consoles. I on,y really played 3 of them
@@Hyp3rSonic3 out of 20+ lol
I love Tales of Destiny and Tales of the Abyss! I just wish that Tales of Destiny for the PS2 would have had a US release, so I could finally play it!
It has an English patch by life bottle productions. So you can play the full game in English
im playing rn in ps2 the directors cut lol
Abyss is my favorite Tales game thanks to one scene
(SPOILERS)
After Luke sinks the town , the other characters, one by one, berate him for being such an idiot and spoiled brat.
He’s trying but it’ll take time lol
It was really subtle writing.
Yuri's my boy dude, he's such an asshole and I love it
From what I understand Zestria is very popular among the younger Tales fans.
its because people are going through the "at least its not as bad as arise" phase as soon as a new game comes along the love will fade trust me its like this with fandoms everytime a divisive game is released people started to stop bashing FFXIII when FFXV came around as well its as predictable as it gets with these groups.
@@RaidenKaiser wait is arise bad?
Berseria and Vesperia are more loved in the west it seems, I remember someone telling me that the tales of series fan base in Japan was full of fujoshi and I think that is why Zestiria is so high because I can’t see any other reason.
And this is coming from someone who likes Zestiria but it isn’t better than Berseria, Xillia 1/2 and Vesperia by any means.
Abyss is easily head and shoulders above the rest. Such a great game
ABYSS BOYS STAND UP😁👍
I'm surprised how low berseria was ranked imo it's easily one the top 5 with story and cast alone.
Cant believe that xillia 1 and arise were ranked so low. Arise had the best battle system imo.
No way, sis. Combat peaked in Xillia 2 and from there it went downhill.
tales of eternia is 1 of the best tales i played during my time.20plus years past and i still love that game
I'm shocked Zesteria placed so high. Also the mobile games even placing is all sort of shocking, especially since they're no longer in service.
I haven't played enough of the series to fairly rank the whole thing, but a few placements surprised me. The biggest ones probably being Legendia above Xillia, Zestiria above Berseria, and Zestiria being in the top ten period.
My ranking the games I've played goes something like this, taking both gameplay and story into consideration:
1. Berseria
2. Abyss
3. Graces F (almost entirely for the gameplay mind you)
4. Symphonia
5. Vesperia
6. Arise
7. Xillia
8. Zestiria
9. Legendia
10. Dawn of the New World
I really need to play more of the games to round it out. I'm particularly in interested in the original version of Hearts, Innocence R, Eternia, and Rebirth.
Zestiria being above Berseria is just mind boggling to me. Like... how?
As an American my favorites were
1. Tales of Xilla 2 (4 playthrough lol)
2. Tales of Arise
3. Tales of Graces f
4. Tales of Heart R
5. Tales of Symphonia 2
yep xillia 2 is my favorite too, Ludger is amazing.
Zestiria in the top 5?! No fucking way. That's craaaazy
I have only played 4 games so far but I would rank them like this:
1. Berseria
2. Arise
3. Symphonia(still need to finish it)
4. Zestiria
I have played all these on PC and I am very surprised by Zestiria's high ranking.
As for story this is more subjective imo as all 3 have decent storylines
Music wise Zestiria is at the top of the pile along with legendia
In terms of progression systems / customization zestiria and berseria systems kinda suck, but so does field of fonons. Crafting accessories in Arise is also pretty stale even if its better than zestiria and berseria
Games like Xillia and Graces F just get everything right
@@nezkeys79interesting, I think that Arise and Berseria have the best gameplay by far.
I have a very different rating, tho it was interesting to see what considered beloved games in Japan
Zestiria got the 4th place, holy shit!
I would've ranked it:
1 abyss
2 vesperia
3 arise
4 berseria
5 graces f
6 xilla
7 symohinia
8 xillia 2
9 eternia
10 destiny
11 phantasia
12 zestiria
13 legendia
I couldnt rank the others as i never got to play them.
Tales of the Abyss is the only Tales game I’ve ever played and this lets me know I’ve already played the peak of this series
best overall : tales of arise.
best combat : hands down tales of graces f.
these two are the best tales experience i ever felt (i already tried it all and nothing strike quite as graces f and arise).
Graces F is godly. I wish more people played that game.
zestiria surprised me, since its always seen as the black sheep of the franchise
It's not my list; as stated in the title of the video and in the video itself, this is a list the polled Japanese fans.
Hello Rozalin?
Adell from Disgaea 2 is looking for you. He said you got lost at the demon supermarket and wants you to come home.
🥰
I'm surprised they prefer Zestiria to Berseria, it's the complete opposite for me
I enjoy them both for different reasons. But I do think Berseria is the better game overall. The characters in Berseria are top-notch. I really liked the color of the cast, with such variety but never clashing.
I only know 4 so mine is Abyss cuz of the Opening for the anime by Bump by Chicken. Arise is my 2nd and 3rd and 4th Berseria and Xillia
Totally crazy because Beseria is mechanically superior in every way but somehow ended up so much lower.
@@mee7er I agree with you man. Berseria literally fixed majority of the issues from zesty and it scored lower in the poll. I think it's because zesty has garnered alot of votes from the fujoshi and yaoi fans due to the sorey and mickleo bromance lol
Xillia 2 and Graces F will always be my favorites.
Vesperia and Arise are great though.
Still love the OG tales of Destiny haven't played any others.
Zestiria, Xillia 2, Legendia, Graces F, mobile games ahead of Arise, Xillia 1, damn.
What game are you playing in the video? That looks like fun!
Good choices in the top 3. Weird that Symphonia is so low.
Lol XD
That collab being (from last to first in this video list) #17 Tales of Xillia, #13 Tales of Arise, #11 Tales of Berseria, #8 Tales of Symphonia, #5 Tales of Vesperia, #3 Tales of Phantasia.
Yet the game is underrated, lol XD
Also from what I heard, either #13 Tales of Arise or #5 Tales of Vesperia is fans favorite, and I also heard people tend to like Xillia 1 more than Xillia 2 too, so I'm surprised to see Japan see them differently.
@@thefalsehero I heard that STORYWISE... its not that good... but im talking about the game as whole... graphic wise it was really a step up...
@@erickreyes7902 I agree the graphics and gameplay were great. But I'm an author by trade, so I can't forgive bad storytelling.
Symphonia, Arise and Vesperia are my personal favorites.
Where’s the love for Xillia…
-Spoler- If Abyss didnt get first I'd riot.
I... I disagree with the placement of the Xillia games in my opinion they're much better than some of the higher ranked games in there.
I *highly* disagree with the presence of the mobile game in the litteral top 10
I am confused with Zestiria's placement i thought this game was considered a very mediocre release but i guess Japan really enjoyed it ?
I'm Proud of Abyss placement is all I'm gonna say even i am surprised because it is heavy in backtracking,
Edit _a year later_:
So the mobile game Luminaria got plugged out, it was already crazy that it got this high despite being very recent at the time of that game release but beside that I'm very surprised Rays which is, imo, a more faithful Tales of experience on mobile, didn't make it in this list...
Luminaria at NINE?? EXCUSE ME??
Tales of Vesperia is my Favorite I guess? I say “I guess“ because of the fact that it is really the only tells game that I’ve ever really played very very far into but still have not beat…
But I’m also playing tales of the abyss on my 3DS..
Wish they could re port the game >w<
From my perspective I would put in top 3:
Graces F and Zesteria should be switched imo :)
Dang this list is all over the place.
It's interesting to hear a difference audience opinion cause they often don't look in a character for the same traits a Western audience would.
Im suprised that Xillia is so low even lower than Xillia 2 also Berseria missing the top 10 in my mind its one of the best so missing the top 10 is shocking
Vesperia = Symphonia > everything else > .....
Tales of Arise... Sweet christ was that a bad game...
THANK YOU FINALLY SOMEONE ADMITS THIS GAME IS TERRIBLE
@@reinsama2.09ok? I dont think it's terrible, but its ok if you think it is. Doesn't make its the "correct" opinion, is what I am sensing from your comment, which.. why? 💀. Like. I respect your opinion, but still
Actually, make that vesperia
I'm surprised Xillia was that low o.o
Arise wasn’t good at all lol. The Writing and cutscenes were so bad.
Playing Arise now and it's fantastic so far !!
muh female protagonist!!!!!!!!
haha jk
cool vid bro. subbed!
I'm just getting into the series with Tales of Arise and really enjoying it. Already bought Vesperia and the other Zestiria (spelling?).
Can't wait to keep playing ; P
I'm watching your other vids!
My favorites were Tales of Xillia 2 and Tales of Graces.
I was surprised with vesperia but abyss was well deserved #1 need it on ps5
Don't forget that people online are a vocal minority.
Legendia is the one tales game i feel like needs a new remake. The story is there but only having half voiced story in english kinda sucks. Plus idk im cool with phantasias battle system but legendia just feels weird
Best one is phantasia, case closed
Tales of Berseria has the most frustratingly confusing Final Dungeon.
As much as I love Berseria, that is absolutely true lol. Took me FOREVER to figure out my way through that.
Man I adore tales of the abyss so much followed bye symphonia and vesparia hope that's okay
Artes I could have seen
Alphen getting a new arte like Blazing Beast (it is a arte Stan usually has) with Either Stans Lv3 Burst Arte or his last boss killer.
And since I changed 2
Alphen with the Luger stuff I feel he could have had 1 of Lugers Dual blades techniques disintegration for a nice rapid slice into the Eternal Waltz would be cool.
And Dohalim could have had either a Jade Spell or Melee. My thoughts go to energy blast and Mystic Cage. Giving him a non-elemental spell would be interesting.
Why the hell was Xilla ranked that low?! It should've been ranked higher than its sequel.
Excuse me? Why is Luminaria so high when it died so soon?
This is quite a shocking list. Luminaria is really only Tales in name imo. The gameplay is atrocious. I'm very surprised how highly ranked it is. Also very surprised at Zestiria. Berseria is also somewhat low for such a strong story. Also interesting that Tales of the Rays isn't in the list, even though it's the longest lasting Mobile game in the franchise.
Tales of zestiria?!? Wwhhhuuuttt?!!?
