Also I just got a new mic setup (yay, no mic on screen!) but I know there are a few parts of this video where I’m not completely synced to the audio. Sorry about that, still on a learning curve with editing and didn’t want to delay this video any further! Will be better next time! :)
For what it’s worth, most video editing software has an automated means for synchronizing separate audio and video sources (by using the camera’s audio to line things up), which makes A/V sync a lot easier. Also all things being equal it’s best to have the video slightly ahead, since we tend not to notice that as much (since we’re used to there being a slight audio delay in real life due to the speed of sound being only 1 foot per millisecond). Another trick I like to use is to unmute the camera audio and just listen, and nudge it around until there’s no audible delay between the two versions of the sound. Don’t do your sync by trying to line up the sound to your lips, that’s a really hard way to do it and usually doesn’t sound very natural. Another thing you can do to make things easier is to start every video take by clapping once, loudly, which will give you a nice visual indicator of where the audio waveforms should line up.
Oh also your editing is pretty good! I do notice the desync in a few places but it’s not hugely distracting. You’ll absolutely get the hang of this soon enough. Just keep doing what you’re doing. :)
I really love how non judgmental you are about things like ground coffee, flavored coffees, and decaf coffee. I've been a barista for 9 years and have trained countless baristas and had endless conversations with customers and the sheer volume of snootiness about "decaf is just hot brown gross water" and "flavored coffee is lying to yourself" has really driven me crazy. I love being able to grind my own coffee to fit my needs, but my absolute favorite coffee blend of all times is from Target, their Archer Farms Hot Buttered Rum Light Roast Coffee. Yes, it straight up smells like candy, and that aroma will fill the kitchen for the whole day and it just makes me so happy. Similar to your vanilla blend, the flavor is more muted after it's brewed. I feel like that "aroma" is more the experience than the actual flavor itself. Really enjoyed this video :)
You NEED to try Roaming Goat Highlander Grogg. It's my cousins favorite and I love it too. I'm going to screenshot and buy her this archers farms one too try. It's like.... butterscotch and the lovely natural faint vanilla, primarily Carmel notes linger for hours (if you brew it daily it's pretty persistent 😍) if not all day.
I love certain blueberry flavored coffees. Doesn't make sense at first, but I'm leaning toward citrus, floral nowadays, and blueberry falls smack in the middle of that. Plus, the smell is heavenly and different.
@Jeannie Park Several years ago I found a Berry Blend coffee sold for retail by Dunkin Donuts. The coffee itself was kind of acidic, but it smelled AMAZING so I know exactly what you mean. I find they pair really well if you sweeten it with honey instead of regular sugar.

I noticed how excited you were for the instant premixed coffee. I've tried many of these before and have found that i HIGHLY prefer many korean brands, like Namyang and Maxim. I've learned that they do tend to have more sugar than i would prefer. I shake the packet up and down for 10-20 seconds before opening. This lets the lighter weighted instant coffee and milk powder rise to the top and the heavier sugar crystals drop down. Then pinch the bottm before you dump it into your cup, adjust as you wish.
I agree. For instant premix, I also really like Maxim, specifically the mocha flavor (taste like regular coffee to me, not mocha, but it’s good). Super handy for camping and the occasional hankering for that particular flavor. I haven’t tried Namyang but I’ll check it out!
I was going to suggest that Morgan hit an Asian grocer, particularly Korean, but even the big Chinese chain in town has a lot of the same coffees. There are Korean versions of that coffee+creamer+sugar combo, and there is a mark on the packet that you can pinch while pouring it out to adjust the amount of sugar you’re adding. They are amazing when you figure out the right amount for your taste!
If you are still looking for what to do with all the leftover coffee I would recommend you freeze them and make a lot of cold brew. Every time my coffee goes stale or a family member gives me supermarket coffee I like to make cold brew, it uses up a lot of coffee without wasting and it makes supermarket coffee taste better.

That Illy is ground for filter. You can tell by the little symbol on the bottom front of the can. They have specific grinds for every brewing method. My personal choice is the classic roast (the red ring) ground for Moka. It's the perfect camping coffee, verry pleasent, round and mellow. Their darker roasts are verry bitter and might work for espresso but not for anything else.
I snagged a small tin of pre-ground Illy at a different store, and it has directions for espresso machine and moka pot. I’ve had no luck with it in my Gaggia Classic, so as far as I can tell Illy grinds their coffee to be brewed in a trusty moka pot. UPDATE: My hunch was correct, it’s moka pot grind.
Colombian here! I think that instant coffee is not good, but if you want to drink it, use the double amount recommended, even triple it. If you don't, your coffee will taste like nothing. Colombian coffee is very mild and smooth, and for whatever reason, when it's in an instant form, the flavor dilutes a lot!
I totally agree with texture being key on beverages 😊 I know it's really hard to describe the ones you don't like, but it's always helpful to give flavor notes for people that have different palates. Cheers and thanks for the reviews!
Watching you taste so much coffee back to back reminds me of the time I started hallucinating because I did three cuppings working at Mr. Green Beans and drank cold brew all day in between them
I was apprehensive about watching this. It would be so easy to make this a laborious, boring chore of a video. But you did a fantastic job with it. Lots of cute moments throughout. Really good job!
I know this is an older video - but I just wanted to comment (after watching like 50 videos in one day) I love how you let your personality stay in the videos, leaving some word mix ups and the laughter. Its amazing
For the illy coffee - you can tell how you’re supposed to make it based off of the little symbol on the bottom part of the front of the canister - sometimes there will be a moka pot - sometimes an espresso cup but I think that one had a drip coffee symbol on it. Nice review though!!
the instant coffee at around 24:26 sounds just the korean coffee sticks, which are VERY popular in korea, and pretty cheap, and yes like you said about the TJs one, very sweet. seems like a copy of those lol
Morgan is better. James likes only stuff that is at minimum expensive. Morgan seems to have taste of "normal" coffee enthusiast, James is ultra snob about coffee
The Barista Espresso blend is my favorite at TJ’s and it’s inexpensive. It’s the perfect everyday coffee. I’ve tried so many coffees from there and it’s the only one I’ve like so far.
I feel like you and James are the two coffee people of youtube lmao, James is more organized and neat and your videos are more chaotic, the contrast is perfect
One of my go-to drinks is the their cold brew concentrate mixed with their vanilla almond milk (Not the creamer, but the normal milk carton). It is thick, creamy and doesn't dilute the coffee flavor too much. Love it!
I found those instant coffee packets for camping several years ago-- they are so easy for morning coffee. And the cold brew bottles are great in the summer. Very interesting video. I have a caffeine buzz just from watching.
The illy coffee is ground for a filter preparation. In the front of the canister you can see a drip filter with a coffee pot symbol. For espresso you see a espresso mug and when it’s whole beans, you’ll see a coffee bean symbol.
As a former (almost) self proclaimed TJs junkie, I enjoyed this video lol. A big fan of the bottled cold brews. Agreed, the nitro isn't the best. With the understanding that TJs takes private labeling to the next level, some of these products can be found elsewhere. The whole bean coffee is hit or miss. Since roast dates aren't disclosed, I usually have a better experience with the beans within the first few days of opening the package. If you're on a budget and need convenient drip coffee, the medium roast TJ coffee is one to go to. Also not sure if they changed the policy for covid, but in the store you're allowed to ask to sample just about anything. My friend works there. Also they do have a coffee cart sampling station. In my area even during covid they would brew and leave it for self serve, not sure if that changed. I only stopped shopping there because they don't have a delivery service.
I’m so glad you liked the Colombian! That’s usually my go-to since per ounce, it’s pretty affordable and the taste is pretty nice. My personal preference is light-medium roasts as well since I love tasting the distinct flavors and also because of the high caffeine hehe but that’s more of a treat hehe so the TJ whole bean medium roast definitely does it for me!
I don't think I've ever felt more grateful for a video before. As an avid coffee drinker and TJ shopper, this was incredibly helpful. I'm excited to add the decaf and cold brew to my offices and kitchen!
I totally did not expect you to test them all in one go! Thanks for a fun watch. The 3 Iin 1 coffee packets are my go-to for camping and coffee emergencies while traveling.
I agree that Illy's packaging obscures the instructions. I used 16 fl oz of water and 13g of coffee in a French press. (How's that for mixing units?) It made a decent mochachino.
Great run on the Coffee, As for the Illy extra dark roast, It is drip profile. On the front of the can is a picture of recommended brewing method. I looked at all the cans to make sure of the recommended blend.
I have had the illy drip coffee in a French press and it has turned out quite good. I was very careful to wait a long time for the grounds to settle on the bottom, did not press the plunger, and poured very slowly. I have also used and enjoyed their moka pot preparation. As mentioned by another commenter, it should have a small symbol on the canister with the recommended preparation. They make several different preparations in very similar cans.
Im so happy you made a matcha video! I do a super simple matcha latte every morning, about 12 ounces of warm milk, a teaspoon of matcha, and froth it up!
Colombian Whole Bean fan checking in! I'm not super picky with my coffee, but have found the Colombian roast to be the best "bang for you buck" whole bean coffee you can easily buy. It also makes for a great espresso grind, and is my summer go to when I want something iced (aka double shot over ice with some milk).
When I had a Trader Joe's near me, I liked to get their coconut & almond milk creamer, and the canned single-origin whole beans (I think). Sometimes they even gave out hot coffee in store to test out, if I'm remembering correctly.
the french teacher in my high school said she put butter in her coffee and you talking about the fat giving body reminded me of that! video ideas? 🤔 butter and oils in coffee?
That illy coffee is one of my favourites, and i am 100% sure that you have to use Moka to prepare it the proper way. And yeah without sugar its really rich.
This was the exact video I needed. I was almost about to buy that unknown origin espresso blend but it makes me nervous to buy cheap coffee for espresso! I’m definitely going to try it now though 😸
Kudos to you doing a tasting video with so many coffees in one video instead of breaking up into several different videos like a part 1, 2, 3 and 4 for each category. That one pre-ground coffee that you weren't completely sure how to brew it, because it was ground pretty fine might be ok to brew using the Turkish method of making coffee.
Old Town white coffee is really good! It's a 3-in-1 instant coffee; there are different flavours, and one with less sugar. You can usually find it in Asian grocery stores
As someone that writes for Coffee and Tea at Trader Joe's.... I'm so happy that the ILLY Ground Coffee is finally off of my shelf! It took so long to get rid of it LMAO the Vanilla is my favorite coffee. It's the one that I constantly grab off the shelf for my kitchen.
I have some of the cold brew powder for when I am in a hurry. But I don't put it in water, I put it in oat milk that I sweeten a little with a turbinado cane sugar syrup I make for all my cold coffees (I am not a hot coffee drinker at all) and it's pretty good imo
Illy is very well known coffee brand in Italy, I would say it's the most premium consumer grade coffee there is on the shelves, it's widely used in bars for espresso, and in the store it can be found in 4 different grinds (beside different roasting grades for each of the grinds): whole coffee, moka pot, espresso and filter, the tin has the same form factor for all of them but you can see the symbol and description on the front, you had the filetr coffee one. I usually use the classic (medium roast) for espresso and I really like it as an everyday espresso, crema is good, aromas are good, but tend to the darker side and for a pre ground coffee isn't that bad.
Being raised Mormon, I didn't drink coffee. Post divorce, many years later, one of my daughters shared a swig of a frozen triple shot mocha. I could see why it was so addicting. I didn't need the additional anxiety from caffeine while raising 7 as a single Mom, but I noticed a sample of Joe's (pre-Covid) coffee gave me a couple of moments of false euphoria. During initial Lyme disease, with extreme fatigue and brain fog, to cut through the sleeping sickness nightmare, I'd have a cup occasionally. A New Jersey 74 yr.-Old friend gave me one of those fat little Farberware coffee pots, which makes really fast, hot, good coffee. He found it for $5 at a thrift store. 2 T. Beans ground fresh, 1.5 c. of water, and half n half without the Rbst or maybe organic, some raw sugar... and I had a cup of comfort. Jim and I had a weekly phone coffee 'date' on Sunday to touch base, until he rudely died on me. Things change in life. I miss my friend. He made the best cold cut sandwiches....and though male, not being a lengthy talker, I appreciated his evolution per phone call and his company. Now I've drifted to organic decaf, but Swiss processed only, as the carbon dioxide exuding process gave me stomach pain and instant bloat, like ulcers. It might be that processing with CO2 makes coffee more acidic or has some residue or chemical reaction. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it. I've noticed people can tend to be connoisseurs of coffee, roasts and blends, suppliers, etc. Thank you for your thorough TJoe's investigation efforts...viewed on a Sunday morning.
Yeah it's really unfortunate, Morgan only found most of TJ's bad whole bean blends. There's a few that are actually surprisingly good and very affordable!
@@OldmanJables my problem is TJ's roasts pretty dark (you saw that sumatra) and nearly everything they have is "medium-dark" or straight dark or even "extra dark"... I just don't like dark coffee at all so I really have like 2 choices, and the Colombia is pretty good for that.
I tried the Illy dark coffee in a French press and Vietnamese coffee maker, and that just really doesn't work. It way too fine for that! It works well for drip coffee though. Btw, that's some dedication! Very interesting to see one person trying all of these :)
Great reviews! I totally agree with you - their whole bean Colombia Supremo has always been solid and surprisingly tasty. Occasionally their limited edition single origin coffees can be tasty, but overall TJ’s coffee has more often than not been over roasted. For around the same price per lb, I’ve found Happy Mug Coffee a lot better.

I'm definitely a chocolate creamer guy myself, the full bodied dark roast with a simple chocolate creamer and maybe a shot of milk. Though, in failing having good chocolate creamer, I do fall back to french vanilla, it's my dad's go to, and having grown up with it it's nice.
Love the cold brew concentrate too, also cost effective--very nice with milk and maple syrup. Not so big on the camping coffee. You have my admiration--you must have been wired for a week.

One of my go-to drinks is the their cold brew concentrate mixed with their vanilla almond milk (Not the creamer, but the normal milk carton). It is thick, creamy and doesn't dilute the coffee flavor too much. Love it!
Espresso for the Illy coffee was the way to go, it's an Italian blend (from my hometown! :) ) and we don't really do anything apart from espresso lmao
Im just living for watching you get sassier and less restrained with more time and coffee in this video 💖 10/10 will come again
Loved just watching the time go by in the background 😆 love the dedication it’s awesome great video!!!
I think I ended with around 3 hours of footage to scrub through
@@morgandrinkscoffee 🤯
I found those instant coffee packets for camping several years ago-- they are so easy for morning coffee. And the cold brew bottles are great in the summer. Very interesting video. I have a caffeine buzz just from watching.
The explanatory, placid tone of this taste-test was calming and entertaining.
The illy coffee is ground for a filter preparation. In the front of the canister you can see a drip filter with a coffee pot symbol. For espresso you see a espresso mug and when it’s whole beans, you’ll see a coffee bean symbol.
This is the first time I've seen someone make such a time-consuming video and actually get more energized as the video went on
Yay! Live audio Morgan is back!
Also, thumbs up for the Sumatran whole bean dance of revulsion 🤣
"Dance of Revulsion" Thank you, I was looking for the correct phrase and you Nailed it!
The thing I admire most is how much enthusiasm you can show for the most instant basic commercial coffee as a (meanwhile) high profile barrista.
For anyone in Texas the HEB cafe olé Houston blend is just like that vanilla flavored coffee, it’s MAGICAL! Can’t recommend enough
That's a lot of coffee, and work, to put into a single episode. I can already feel the coffee jitters.
Idk who is putting that fine grind into a french press lol
The garlic doing it's job: no vampires in this video!
The red cans of cold brew are my after lunch treat during the work week, I tell everyone about them
"My filter is slipping"
😏 Coffee puns
Im so happy you made a matcha video! I do a super simple matcha latte every morning, about 12 ounces of warm milk, a teaspoon of matcha, and froth it up!
I'm not from the US but it was so fun to watch you try all of these! Thank you for this video!
Sometimes they even gave out hot coffee in store to test out, if I'm remembering correctly.
the way i ran straight for the pre-ground light roast in the bag because that's my favorite of their coffees!
Watching and listening intensivly even though there’s no Trader Joe’s in my country
the french teacher in my high school said she put butter in her coffee and you talking about the fat giving body reminded me of that! video ideas? 🤔 butter and oils in coffee?
you have to try it. Butter is just cream beat up
A lot of older people I worked with did that as well. They said it helped them poop 🤷🏼♀️ it really isn't that bad tbh
Like your blood is 50% coffee 💪💪
Describing Coffee
Morgan: A little acidic, some bitterness here
Me: This coffee taste like coffee with a hint of coffee.
LOVE YOUR VIDEOS
‘Coffee from Sumatra isn’t everyone’s cup of tea.’ (paraphrasing)
Excellent turn of phrase! 🤣
The morning blend (super colorful packaging; pre-ground) is my favorite by far. Maybe they don’t carry that everywhere?
There are actually more whole beans they introduced. Single origin coffees which are actually really amazing.
Yeah it's really unfortunate, Morgan only found most of TJ's bad whole bean blends. There's a few that are actually surprisingly good and very affordable!
The small lots are my faaaaaavorite we had one from Peru that was so good
@@OldmanJables my problem is TJ's roasts pretty dark (you saw that sumatra) and nearly everything they have is "medium-dark" or straight dark or even "extra dark"... I just don't like dark coffee at all so I really have like 2 choices, and the Colombia is pretty good for that.
Years ago, Trader Joe's had a Sumatra Blue that was wonderful, medium roast.
thank you for your sacrifice!! this was so fun to watch and i appreciate your process
Your reaction is exactly how I felt about the instant cold brew. Have to use a tablespoon to make it drinkable
You forgot their coffee ice cream which is the only TJs coffee product I buy.
Happy to have found this video, UA-cam algorithm did well on this suggestion. I have watched 2 of your videos so far and find them really nice to watch and easy to enjoy. Next i'm going to dive into your video catalog and see if you have anything to say about the coffees I drink and if you have anything similar or better to try.
Great work Morgan! Thanks for “taking one for the team”. Such hard work, and I really appreciate you saving us time and money.
Thank you for such a thorough and responsibly handled testing of these products. I really appreciate your open and respectful approach to coffees in various forms. As a Trader Joe's employee, I can say that your store offers only the biggest sellers of our selection, so if you ever see new ones displayed please share your opinions with us. We are offering more small batch roasts now, and they are each quite unique.
"Sumatran coffee, it's not everyone's cup of tea." - Morgan 2021
i just discovered this channel and oh god this cements that while i'm LOVING all the vids, morgan has a WILDLY different taste in coffee than me XD
I don't really understand why this channel appeared in my feed, but I love the vibe on it. Very relaxing
I don't have Trader Joes where I live but this was the first video I have watched of yours and your personality was so wonderful I watched every one of the tastings. This was such an enjoyable video, loved it :)
Morgan, that was awesome! Thanks for "taking one for the team"! I definitely wondered about some of TJ's coffee selections.
I don't even know this brand since I am from Brasil, but I really enjoyed the review and your opinions
Trader Joe's is a specialty grocery store here in the States. They have a vast amount of their own products under their name.
I would mix once of the cream and sugar coffee packets with a plain instant coffee packet to make it stronger and less sweet. Of course more water too.
I dont know how I got here, I cannot even drink coffee because it makes me incredibly tired and anxious but I think she's so calming and interesting
did you like the coffee candies?! I used to be so obsessed with them! 💕☕️
This is why I came to the comment section. They are not my favorite coffee flavored candy (I really like the ones I can only find at the Asian market). I wanted to know what someone else thought.
I’ve never clicked soo fast before in my life😂😂😂. LOVE THE CONTENT MORGANN!!! ❤️
Thank you for this video! You mentioned James Hoffman. I really enjoy James' videos, but he's on a whole other level. Your videos are very relatable and useful to the average coffee drinker, of which I'm one. If I'm looking for something I can actually use, I go to your videos. If I'm looking for something to generally expand my knowledge of coffee on an academic or scientific level, I go to James' content. Keep up the great content!
I will have to try the decaf. I have to drink decaf for health reasons so always looking out for the best tasting, thank you.
I was randomly recommended this, I don’t drink coffee at all but you’re so captivating that I was hooked immediately
"i'm so tired"
hey morgan uh would you like some coffee for that
Morgan: *drinks lots of coffee.*
Also Morgan: I’m so tired.
My wife works at TJ's, so this was really fun to watch! I haven't tried everything because I found out I love the Joe's Medium (we have the whole bean version of both normal/decaf available here), and just stuck with that... I have some new things to try now!
I've always had a soft spot for Joe's Dark Roast. I always brewed it with the AeroPress, over ice, and added some cream for a tasty iced latte.
Illy is actually an Italian brand, it’s not by Trader Joe’s but it’s sold at a lot of alternative grocery stores. I’m an Illy Caffe barista and we typically use our Classico for espresso instead of the Robusto. It’s worth trying!!
Totally inspired by this video to start just bulk buying coffee products and trying them. Watched this video and not 24hrs later found myself in Trader Joe’s to try some of these haha
man, your trader joes has a much smaller selection of whole bean coffees than the one near me and that is a bit surprising, but at least you got my favorite of their coffees. only 6 min in so I have no clue what you thought of it yet though lol
edit: yay, you liked my fav trader joe coffee lol, I always get the columbia supremo tins, after having tried most of their other offerings it just seemed to be the most nice to drink and I'm really happy you don't hate it
