So a surprise character analysis to kick off December! I just really wanted to talk about a Vice-Captain... anyway, what did you think of Nanao and in particular, the Shinken Hakkyoken reveal? Let me know!
@@bqw2094 it was convenient but it was so cool, and tied up some loose character threads, that you could only really care if you’re a huge narrative snob. Have some fun geez.
@@callamburles3075 no it wasn't cool , nanoa was crying and pissing herself in fear and the god killing sword didn't even kill lille barro , he turns into a bunch of flamingos and has a off screen fight with izuru .
Nanao is definitely an underSTATED character. I wouldn’t call her underrated because in my honest opinion her character does exactly what its meant to do. But its kind of sad ya know. No one other than her probably realizes how lost Shunsui feels. Thrust into a position that he is more than capable of fulfilling but in the shadow of a man who was considered the strongest. Even more so now, with Shunsui having lost his best friend. She knows that she has to do her best to be that “proxy” because she doesn’t want Shunsui to hold the burden of being the Captain Commander as that position has many.
I think it’s pretty noteworthy that she made it to the position she had because of her Kido. Nobody else can say that. Especially because most of these people rely upon zanpakutos for most or at least half of the Kido they use. She can say she’s an outlier in this regard, because Shikai is the prerequisite in most cases.
Nanao is SO underrated. Although Rukia will always be my favourite Lietuenant/Captain, Nanao is so close as well. She's just amazing, I hope she gets more popular after the fight with Lillie gets animated
Ise was one of those characters that always just kind of flew under the radar for me and its honestly the analysis videos from these kinds of characters that I want to see most.
By the end she looks like a cross between Lisa and Uryu’s mom Katagiri. Always liked her relationship with my favorite captain Shunsui. Never thought an analysis of Nanao would be any good or something I’d watch, but good job Tommo, made it interesting.
Lisa, Nanao, and Kyoraku’s relationship with each other is one my favorites. Love their designs and their relationship. Wish it was explored more. Always imagined Kyoraku as a loving dad-figure to them. That last fight moment with Nanao and Kyoraku vs Lillie is one of my favorites.
I love Nanao!!!! I was sold on her when they showed Shunsui and she was throwing the flower pedals down on him and hes like okay thats enough and she just keeps throwing a ton down on him, its was funny. "Yeah, I think its fair to say... I liked Nanao from the start." Any super movie people know what I grabbed that quote from? Its a Stehen King adapted movie, anyone?
I really enjoy your focused analyses of individual characters! I'm impressed that you just pulled off a comprehensive 42 minute examination of Nanao Ise just on the spur of the moment. To me it really feels like Kubo invented Shinken Hakkyoken specifically for this arc, not as a deus ex machina to defeat Lille Barro (Kouraku could have won the fight on his own if Kubo had wanted him to) but to tie together the stories of Kouraku and Ise, and give her a moment to stand out and contribute. I would have liked it better if they had known what they were dealing with and Kouraku had realized he would need her to help with the fight against Lille Barro as a strategic decision, rather than a fortunate coincidence. But their backstory did tie some elements together nicely. And while the manga didn't foreshadow anything of her sword there was an unexplained affinity between Nanao and the younger element of Katen Kyokotsu in the anime Zanpakutō Unknown Tales arc. I'd like to request sort of companion piece to this character analysis. There is another Lieutenant who comes to mind because they seem to have a similar amount of focus, a biological connection to their Captain, a particularly strong showing in the Thousand Year Blood War, and no zanpakuto. I am referring of course to Nemu Kurotsuchi (they even have similar roles within the Shinigami Women's Association - Nanao being official Vice-President, while Nemu is Yachiru's hand-picked choice to replace her).
Man If the sword would have had a little more foreshadowing, this will be my favorite fight, even though I still do not like how broken chicken quincy is
@@ThalonRamacorn With the final Arc we see enemies who are meant to be essentially gods. From Ywawch's Almighty to the power of the peices of the soul king. Lille Barro as the first quincy is amoung them as a godlike being.
The idea of an inherited Zanpakuto being expanded on in CFYOW was a real treat. While the Ise clan's "curse" associated with the blade in regards to their women may be likely superstition, the Tsunayashiro's had an actual proven downside to its use.
Nanao! I love Nanao honestly, poor woman's back must hurt from carrying the 8th division when Shunsui's slacking (all the time). She needs a break, and I would prefer Shunsui not flirting at his goddamn niece. But I do understand why he shelters her from the fighting. The Zanpakutō Ex Machina moment was a bit...out of left field as we don't have any real type of foreshadowing or lead up to it which I would have liked. But other than that I'm fairly happy with the growth she got in the TYBW arc. Definitely looking forward to any future content we get for her.
She did do some pretty amazing stuff. She created a Kido within the days between invasions for the express purpose of keeping her captain from being murdered.
36:12 How is that controversial? It really showed someone who is thrown into battle for the first time really well, let alone against some one on Lillo's caliber. Shunsui coming to her side to assist her is a really good moment as well.
Sadly, I can guarantee you that there are people who think that scene is sexist because she's a woman and she's scared even though anyone in her position would be
People were way to pissed that this victory was taken away from shunsui and seemingly given to nanoa , and to make , matters worse she is being a crybaby about it , she's a lieutant , and yet omeada had more guts than her .kubo tried to give nanoa development l but it was in a really shitty way
22:11 so from a tactical pov it does make sense to shield your casters from direct attack as almost all caster type characters tend to be one of two things 1 extremely squishy or 2 so over powered they are completely untouchable.
Nanao zanpaktou ability was foreshadowed in soul society. When shunshi knocks chad out, nanao is about to kill chad, she looks to be grabbing something and we saw light from her hand. I was shocked that all have MISSED THIS
I like her serious dedication to work especially when things get comical. But when things get serious and those glasses come off you know the situation is going to get dangerous. Still, Shunsui keeping her lethal side in check is quite a hallmark. It's obvious he doesn't want her hands stained in blood and who can blame him given their relations and the obvious burdens he goes through?
26:30 i always wondered what those early days between kempachi and yamamoto were like. I imagine yamamoto didn't just teach kempachi about kendo but also things like how to speak without shouting, and how to wait for someone to finish talking, even when they wouldn't last 5 minutes in a fight. God i hope yachiru was there as well.
I think the reason Nanao wasnt on the fake karakura fight was mostly because a lieutenant was needed in soul society if anything went wrong in the fight with Aizen. Sasakibe was holding the barrier and maybe Nanao was helping him. She is kido master as well. Of course that stands too that Kyoraku wanted her to be safe. But Toshiro wanted Hinamori to be safe too and she still came calling Aizen a captain again
Nanao is my Favorite Female character in Bleach.....I somehow like her design and personality being a vice captain....also she somehow look like my high school crush with her specs and slimness and those nerd-like attitude she has....love her🥰
I enjoy Nanao and Shunsuei’s interactions. It’s great comic relief: her feistiness against his laziness; yet it’s clear they adore each other. I never saw it as romantic, but more of a familiar and familial relationship. In a way, they protect each other. She understands his grief and accepts his “sheltering;” yet at the same time, she also keeps him in line by scolding and covering for his lack of direction/ambition. More times than not, she acts like a mother hen; and he’s her knight in shining armor, protecting her from harm. It’s a silent agreement/acceptance between them, and they both clearly understand the dynamics of it. Some have suggested she’s weak. Not true. After all, kido is it’s own kind of deadly force. Others have wondered why she doesn’t have a shikai. Again, not true. She *does* have a sword that was issued to her, just as Yourichi does. They simply choose not to use them, which is their prerogative. The God-Killing Sword is a family heirloom and ancient artifact, and so it’s natural that she should have it. It belongs to her family. Another commenter suggested that it might have been created to be used on the Soul King. I think that’s a distinct possibility. Otherwise, how would they have dismembered him, even though he didn’t resist their attempt to render him powerless except for his function to hold the worlds together?
One of the things I disliked the most about the war arch was simply that so many characters just "happened" to have the exact power or weapon needed to overcome a specific enemy that seemed unbeatable. Same for Yoruichi for example who just so "happens" to have a form where her spirit energy constantly changes, something specifically needed to defeat that opponent. It honestly would have felt a little better if they would have found an actual strategy to counter those seemingly unbeatable enemies, rather then having cheap moves that would be utterly useless in other situations, but just to happen to be prefect for said opponent. I did like the arch of course, but this is something that always really bothered me.
I always thought of the shifting energy was just a side effect to a form that made her more powerful at the cost of her cognition. Your right though that even in that case it would still be way too overly convenient.
The problem with pure (or almost pure) kidō users is that, since we don’t know exactly how recruitment works, it’s hard to understand why she would be in the Gotei and not in the Kidō Corp.
23:45 Commenting on nanou not having shared her knowledge with the other reapers/ units fits into the original relationships amongst the different squads and their brutal criticisms of one another that we see early on before ichigo and company's involvement with them completely changed the way they do things as we see at the end of the full ring arc after ichigo regains his powers. So it's no surprise that nanou hadn't had a proper chance to show and teach these techniques to the other reapers yet.
Nanao is one of those characters who isn't as prominent, but a lot of the time she does show up I find myself getting the feels, ie when Shunsui shields her from Yamato, when Nanao is reunited with Lisa, and when she is so shaken from being in a real fight with Lille.
Definitely one of the more understated characters of the verse! I always liked her character + it was cool to see her get a big-ish moment w/Shunsui in the TYBW battle Vs Lille.
Honestly I loved the idea of everything revealed in the fight but I didn't like how the fight played out. Overall the fight was good except the nanao stuff because it came kinda out of nowhere. If it had been foreshadowed better I'd like it way more. I still really like nanao though, and for what it's worth the character moments were still amazing. Loved this video man!
Exactly! If Lille had revealed his "god-like" status before hand and Kouraku grimly resigned himself to the possibility that Nanao could be critical in defeating him as a strategic decision it would have been better than her conveniently being there with just the right hax power.
I honestly wish there was more build up to her family blade and lineage. I genuinely find her interesting and cool very different from the other vice captains but I just wanted more out of it personally
I hope one day you do a character analysis of Izuru, his appearances in the soul society arc and the TYBW fascinated me, and why he seemed to be evil/morally gray with Gin. It always felt like there was more to him
I remember how disappointed I was in her when she was facing off against a grunt sword fiend and was struggling. She had to be saved from that guy smh.
I do really like Nanao and her character alot! Her, Rangiku and Insane have always been my fav Female Lieutenants. :3 (Yes Rukia can count here too lol)
Great video as always my friend I am on episode 72 I'm rewatching Bleach from the very beginning and Nanao is one that is kind of on the side so to speak relevant but we don't know a whole lot about her backstory and this is awesome Bravo again. I like her. The librarian look is spot on. But kinda hot too lol. Sensui is one of my favorite captains. And I've noticed that throughout the first 65 episodes that none of the captains feel any kind of ill-will coming from Ichigo and the rest of the team and I'm going to admit it that when Byakuya Kuchiki gave props to Ichigo and promised to not pursue Rukia any longer because he felt that Ichigo was not targeting him but the grand scheme of the rules of the Soul Society. I cried so what LOL. She has been a mystery. Her abilities are incredible he has bodyguard /teacher. And getting a glimpse of her backstory. I never knew it to be such a deep-seated. And if I have missed it I did not know that he was her uncle. It does speak to his character though. But also by keeping her away from any fighting. She never was able to gain any experience in that type of combat but her ability to use Kido the way she does is astounding
The fact Kubo forgot about her in the White Invasion arc speaks a lot. She should've fight either Lilynette or join Matsumoto and Hinamori vs Tres Besties.
Nanaos zanpakuto was mentioned in the filler arc. Well not directly but she got close to the little girl from Kyorakus swords. She was the one to actually understand Katen. Of course we didnt know this and we saw it just as a filler episode but after reading the manga it makes a lot of sense
@@MaxIronsThird i think so too. Even Yachiru for Kenpachis zanpakuto. She "played" too much with other zanpakuto especially Kurotsuchis and Kenpachi was the only 1 missing and not shown. Even Yamajis zanpakuto was shown in a way
@@CaptainKotetsu I really like Isane, but there's very little information to explore. About comparable to Iba. Ironic that they both worked hard, were good at their jobs, and eventually became Captains.
@@megalictis9002 The fact that they’re both captains proves there’s more than what we’ve been shown so far. I hope Isane and Iba get expanded roles in the tybw anime version or time to shine in the hell arc(if we get more of it).

Yeah I thought the video was awesome you did a great job and I like the fact that you picked a character in the story that doesn't get as much screen time as some of the main characters
Just got recommended her TYBW fight. Then I remembered a fanfic finished before TYBW ever started. Her Shikai was a hammer because she had Medusa Powers and her glasses sealed them! The reveal was very similar in that “in this current situation I HAVE NO OTHER OPTION “ way
If the sword and curse had been even slightly foreshadowed earlier in the arc or series, I think it could have been a showstopper moment, instead of coming across as a complete asspull. It is a cool moment for sure but is held back by how out of nowhere it is.
Ise Nanao is my favourite female Vice Captain ~ maybe I have a thing for chicks with the librarian image and the panel of her secret zanpakutou revelation was one of the most beautiful moments in the manga... Can't wait for the anime portrayal! 😍
Ever since the first appearance, i thought that Nanao would to be revealed into OP Kido user. I thought that book that she always carries around would full of forbidden spells. I also would love to see more Kidos Users. Bleach never shown them well.
She is a kido master, she created that spell that blocks Haschwalth and all Quincy reiatsu. If you’re inventing kido I think you’re prolly a master, would’ve loved to see more kido myself. Criminally underutilized skill.
Kido is a plot hole anyway. Rules arent established and they are so random lol. They can be effectively used as a clutch-second trick and no one would question it cause....*kido*.
@@corndog7813 Dude, it's just another ability. People like Aizen, Unohana, Urahara and Yammamoto are good at both bc they're just really talented and smart.
The problem i have with nanaos character is the same problem i have with a character like chojiro its very hard for me to believe that chojiro was this supposed captain level character who has bankai when hes never really explored chojiro's character for the entire series up until tybw and also due to the fact that he get effortlessly palmed and knocked out by ichigo. With Nanao he hasnt done anything with her character for the majority of the series so it also very hard for me to care for her or root for her big moment when it shes done nothing before hand in the series to really earn that moment and developement and its also very hard for me to believe that she was able to rise to rank of a lieutenant without ever seeing combat until tybw despite her being a soldier in a military organization even hachi who was a member of the kido corp has see more combat then her and thats the original division she wanted to join
Ise family sword is basically a nod to sacred treasures of real life Ise Shrine - the sword, the mirror and the magatama (a stone bead). Basically, 3in1 pack)) Idk for anyone else, but as for me, the Shinken Hakkyoken was the culmination of a VERY long wait to see if Ise name had a meaning -- and a very beautiful one.
Nanao: I’m gonna kill this guy! Shunsui: Nah sweetie don’t do that! Nanao: But, they probably killed Josh Groban and we’re the bad guys this arc! Shunsui: Nah that’s dumb, you’re dumb.

I genuinely find her interesting and cool very different from the other vice captains but I just wanted more out of it personally
I hope one day you do a character analysis of Izuru, his appearances in the soul society arc and the TYBW fascinated me, and why he seemed to be evil/morally gray with Gin. It always felt like there was more to him
he's one of the only few characters that questions/genuinely cares for their purpose and significance as a shinigami.
I remember how disappointed I was in her when she was facing off against a grunt sword fiend and was struggling. She had to be saved from that guy smh.
I'm really happy that she got more screen time during this arc!
Just discovered this channel, kinda upset I never knew about it but kinda glad because it’s all new to me
The ceremonial blade-thing was very cool, they should've just implemented it earlier. Very cool character thougj
I’d really enjoy an analysis of Nemu and the complete experiment of Mayuri
OMG Tommo - so close to 100k ... wow!
I've been around for so long and to see this milestone so close is amazing.
Well done mate.
Just when I thought I couldn’t hate Central 46 any more, I learn something new about them that makes me glad Aizen got rid of them all.
Thank you for making this very detailed and informative video!
The fact Kubo forgot about her in the White Invasion arc speaks a lot. She should've fight either Lilynette or join Matsumoto and Hinamori vs Tres Besties.
SOOOOO happy you did this video. Nanao is one of my favorites.
I like how you are doing less popular characters after doing ALL the famous ones
Nanaos zanpakuto was mentioned in the filler arc. Well not directly but she got close to the little girl from Kyorakus swords. She was the one to actually understand Katen. Of course we didnt know this and we saw it just as a filler episode but after reading the manga it makes a lot of sense
Kubo probably gave some tidbits to the studio.
@@MaxIronsThird i think so too. Even Yachiru for Kenpachis zanpakuto. She "played" too much with other zanpakuto especially Kurotsuchis and Kenpachi was the only 1 missing and not shown. Even Yamajis zanpakuto was shown in a way
For forgotten characters, do you think Hanataro could fit into that category?
Isane too. Squad 4 is the king of forgotten.
@@CaptainKotetsu I love your commitment to Isane and her videos. She's supposed to be a Kido Expert, love her 🤪
Definitely a good suggestion.
Can't help but feel you really wanted an excuse to talk more about Kyoraku
😆. He's my favorite Captain so I'm not complaining.
I just wanna say I love your channel and I seriously have been binge watching all your videos. Thank you so much for the great content 👏
Haven’t been a subscriber for that long but I’m really enjoying your videos, best bleach UA-camr in my opinion
yo its crazy i found your channel like a month ago and you were at 80k subs and you're about to hit 100k well deserved bro keep making great content like always
Really good video, loved seeing your perspective and analysis on this!
When she dumped the petals on him, i just started cracking up! xD
Please do a character analysis for Nemu, both she and Nanao get major development in the TYBW.
I absolutely adore her. I'm glad she ended up so powerful.
Yeah I thought the video was awesome you did a great job and I like the fact that you picked a character in the story that doesn't get as much screen time as some of the main characters
Dude your subscriber growth on youtube has been unreal! The push to 100k subs before the end of 2021 is coming to fruition!! 😁
Love this video.....I wish we had more Nanao in the series and really see what she could do
Such a great channel thank you!!!
It does explain the duality of this sword
I really wish u include the anime with the fillers on the characters because it does animated them more better.
Ise Nanao is my favourite female Vice Captain ~ maybe I have a thing for chicks with the librarian image and the panel of her secret zanpakutou revelation was one of the most beautiful moments in the manga... Can't wait for the anime portrayal! 😍
It would be pure fanfic but I’d love a video on Isshin’s bankai.
Def nao! She gives so much with what little time she has in the last arc even before her big reveal.
Kubo really sank alot of ships when he revealed her and Shunsui were related......or strengthen ships....depends where you sit lol
I always thought she was his daughter.
We know Kyouraku is at least 500 years older than her since the Turn Back the Pendulum arc.
Yeah, Kubo kinda dropped the ball on the whole Kido Corps notion.
tbf there's a handful of kido masters in Bleach.. obvs there's room for more than just 1 lol. but I guess they could be ranked on a list
Love your analysis videos.
this story is so beautiful...
I love listening to your content while I work. If you ever run out of bleach analysis ideas....... maybe start naruto? LOL, just an idea.
Could be fitting is her deus ex machina debut was a set up for a more active role in a hell arc, playing on that divine aspect
This is the one I've been waiting for!
I did not think to much about NaNao but now like I actually really care about this character now.
Basically, 3in1 pack))
Idk for anyone else, but as for me, the Shinken Hakkyoken was the culmination of a VERY long wait to see if Ise name had a meaning -- and a very beautiful one.
Always felt like she was one of the more useful vice captains. Wish she got more screen time.
Nanao: I’m gonna kill this guy!
Shunsui: Nah sweetie don’t do that!
Nanao: But, they probably killed Josh Groban and we’re the bad guys this arc!
Shunsui: Nah that’s dumb, you’re dumb.
Me anytime Yamamoto gives his famous look: Boy you should’ve shut your damn mouth when you had the chance lol
Looking back I think bleach should have some
Small bridge arcs ( arcs that short to show off some characters) like amagi with only izaru.
FB arc got kind of hated though, but i agree with you, there are only 5 arcs in Bleach, Naruto has 10 or so, 5 just in Part1.
Im sad that she didn't get the fancy vice-captain vest like Sasakibe had. It'd make her stand out more as the VC of the first
I really love bleach and the story is just phenomenal.
Only 1k away! Let's go!!
Dam, the close up of Nanao at 4:33 really makes her look alot like Uryu`s mom
YEAH!!! almost there! 100K subs!!
Wooooo yeaaahh baby this what we were waiting for
I'm rewatching and re-read bleach for the third time cause it seems I missed so much...Thank you #mrtommo2304
