- I can hardly believe this is only the first video I'm making about Motobu Choki, the most well-known, unknown Karate master!
This video is only a superficial look into the life of this, otherwise colourful character, and more will be made, I promise!

Thank you for those words! I was aiming for a little provocation (I feel that sentiment suits Mister Motobu quite well). I have had “Karate, my art” for about three years now, and it is exactly how you describe it, I am planning to make a video to clear up some of the questions posed in this one. Btw, I read the book in a few hours, while waiting for surgery, so I might need to reread it 😁

aaaah...yes! My favourite master Choki Motobu!!! His knowledge in fighting was an inspiration for O Sensei Nagamine to create his Yakusoku kumite.
I believe his influence is very visible throughout most karate styles 👍

I didn’t want to name the “opponents”... but yeah, no love lost between these two 😅
Studying history we came to know that the most skilled was Motobu, but he was unpresentable to Hondo (mainland Japan) and to the royal family visiting Okinawa.
His way to practice was too weird, go to the red light district looking for a ''lady'', get drunk and have a rumble... 😂😂😂
Funakoshi was, using David Bowie's words, the best selling show. Nevermind if he wasn't one the best teacher in Okinawa, he was expendables. He was for the island's government the right man in the right time. And looking at how story went... they were right.
Motobu tried to teach his tode in Hondo but he had no luck, due his problems with language (still not able to speak a fluent japanese) and his way to teach too ''male'', few technical lessons (kihon and kata) and a lot of practical lessons (hard kumite), so too many students quit and he was forced to came back in Okinawa.
Yeah, that fits with what I learned... appearance was (is) everything to mainland Japan... but this is not so unusual, humans are visually oriented and superficial... that is why i titled my video about Funakoshi as “the greatest marketeer in Karate history”...
