You had it exactly right when you said today. The mid-70s was a different time in space. Watergate Vietnam War coming to a close. people just wanted to enjoy themselves for a change. Of course some bad things did occur. For the most part people were less uptight then they are in this era. They were innocently naughty if there is a such a thing. The majority of the people that lived in those times remember them fondly. If man and woman didn't get together once in awhile.. you wouldn't be reading this✌
They were a little bit crazy but I think mostly they were harmless. Gene was married and I think he was just trying to boost his ego most of the time, I don't think he was serious at all about any of it. It was all in fun. But you're right in today's time whether you're joking or not, but then again he wouldn't be doing any of that because of todays law. Are you kidding, No one in this show is stupid

This game show is still addictive, and I watched it often when new, as a teen. Some of these eps are in order of being created, I wish they all were. I always want to know if each champion winner of one ep remains so for follow up eps, or if they have to leave. That contestant Barbara's hair is awful, even for 1975, and I was age 14 then, old enough to be aware of styles. She looked about 25, but her hair looked dark gray, looking like a wig partly on top of her own hair. Weird.
Grandpa Jones never sounded like that. He was on Hee-Haw since 1968 and known as Grandpa Jones from at least the 50s… They should have known how he sounded by 1975!
I suspect Barbara didn't want to be caught on national TV embracing or kissing Richard, so she stayed away from him during the Audience and Super Match; you know how those small towns gossip, especially dry ones :)
There's also the fact that Richard was the *only* celeb who failed to match her in the regular game (first two rounds). And his "rent a *body* for the night" response may have put her off. A sharp contestant observes which celebs are on her wavelength before choosing someone for the H/H match. (A really sharp contestant mentally answers her opponent's questions just to see which celebs tend to think the same way she does.) Although it's kind of ironic that a woman from a "dry" town would choose Brett who's always joking about drinking, and in fact, Brett made a joke yesterday about wanting to know the names of the local bootleggers in case she ever had to go to that town. At the time, I thought maybe the contestant took some offense at the remark, because it seemed she (the contestant) was proud of living in an alcohol-free town.
