Turning Turret III After 30+ Years

  • We made history about a month ago by turning the inner projectile ring in Turret I. Today, we topped that feat.
For the first time since the IOWA's decommissioning in 1990 and for the first time since 1992, a turret on an Iowa Class battleship has been rotated.
This footage is just a tease of what we got. Stay tuned for more - including mind-blowing views from inside the turret that have never been seen on film before.
This evolution was the result of months of hard work and research by our team, as well as input from Iowa Class battleship veterans. We make it look easy, but it's most definitely not.

As a machinist these days that is impressive. People don't realize they aren't that difficult to machine. I'm no expert on battleships but that rail the rollers are on isn't one big piece. Most likely many smaller pieces with dowel pin holes and precision ground to size. It's not any harder back then to do than it is today. Machining is almost the same still today. Obviously computers are added and coatings for the tools, but everything else is still the same

As far I know that you need to turn on the turbo generators to move those turrets because the turbo generators produce enough energy to move those turrets. When the Iowa-Class Battleships decommissioned they were opened as museum ships and contract between the navy and the museum was that they can't turn on the steam engine. That means they can't turn on the turbo generators. So the ships are connected to shore power system. In this video the USS Iowa rotating her 3rd turret. So how the hell did they get power to rotate the turret?

@@martypalmiere7672 I tell you what shipmate, turret one leaked hydraulic fluid like a sieve. I spend many an hour on the electrical decks, soaking up inches of it with a sponge and squeezing the sponge in a bucket. A very long, inefficient and tedious job. I would bring my Sony Disk man and a small pair of speakers down there and jam out to Guns And Roses and Skid Row. So much so whenever I hear a Skid Row song on the radio I catch a brief whiff of hydraulic fluid, lol.

The Navy really needs to authorize all four BB museum ships to reactivate the boilers and steam plants for limited operation including the ability to operate the power systems that run the gun elevation mechanisms, and to activate at least one galley so that visitors can experience the Authentic Navy Style Meals cooked right there onboard.

Battleship NJ has a video about the pins that secure the turrets in place. There's just a few welded plates holding them in. Once they're removed, the ship should, in theory, be able to move her turrets. I hope I see it someday.

I doubt the Navy will ever authorize starting up of the boilers and steam plant. And, I can understand that. They are old pieces of equipment which have not been maintained. And yet, if something goes wrong it would do so majorily. Also the fact to operate that sort of equipment is highly skilled, not including just how much work would even be required to start it all up. Afterall all the piping would need checked as well. There is too great a risk if restart them. I would imagine the turrets would have a massive current draw to enable all of them to be rotated at once. To then have a shore based power supply capable of handling that current draw I guess is the limiting factor, but, would be a much safer and better option (or else put a massive gas fired generator somewhere within the ship, that also though is a lot of work). But I agree it would be awesome to see the guns not only rotate but also the barrels having the ability to go up and down.

Never going to happen. Can you imagine the disaster it would be to light off boilers and steam plants unmaintained for over 30 years? The sea chests they need are welded shut. It woud cost millions just to be able to light them off. All that to elevate guns? They can and have recently manually elevated the guns on NJ.

    • @wysoft
      @wysoft Рік тому +18

Huge amount of money for nothing. Entire steam plant would need to be resealed. Boilers are likely in poor shape internally. HFO tanks have likely already been cleaned out, where is your fuel coming from? There's little reason to do it.
The steam ships I work with have to have the engine room continually heated while in layup just to prevent seal and gasket deterioration from constant expansion and contraction cycles of the surrounding water and ambient environment. These BBs haven't had any PM in 30 years because they are never expected to operate again.
Iirc the turrets are hydraulically operated which is why they can still be turned. The hydraulic pumps can be operated off of shore power.
Could you get an old BB underway again if really needed? Sure probably, after a 3 month drydock period at a bare minimum, for a big pile of money

For those of you asking about hearing the sound of the turret moving. I was on the 03 level above the turret, other than the normal port sounds the only sound from the turret was a dull rumble. It is barely audible in the video I took. It was truly a sight to see from above, it moved nice and smooth. Also for those of you asking, this was months of hard work, planning and dedication. It has paid off with amazing success. We were wondering if the crew on the cruise ship berthed behind us were watching and questioning what was going on!!! It is an honor to work with such an amazing crew.

@@DrewBarkerOk A few years ago, someone made a disparaging comment somewhere about the state of USS _Texas_ and about how badly her conservation was being handled, since they were still attempting to get her ready to move for docking. It got a direct reply from one of the Iowas' accounts, I think _New Jersey,_ telling them off -- stating that the entire fleet was watching _Texas_ to learn everything they could from what her team was learning about restoring and maintaining these magnificent machines.
I think about that comment a lot, now that _Texas_ has finally made drydock. The whole fleet is watching, and the lessons are being learned. I expect we'll see the practical result of these lessons very soon!

As a crew member on Iowa's last cruise before decommissioning in 1959 (before the missiles were added) I can verify the soundless turret rotation claims.
From my General Quarters battle station on the 07 level - I was ET5- I'd leave the small puka and stand at the rail watching the shells leaving the big guns seven decks below.
Rotation was silent, discharge of the 16s was surprisingly easy on the ears (low rumble), but the 5"-38 repeated BAM BAMs from the nest right outside my station gifted me with a diminished hearing that I carry even today.
Those years aboard Iowa were some of the best of my life. Bravo Zulu to all the MSN staff.

I am proud of our extraordinary operations team and crew for planning and executing a safe evolution turning Turret 3. It will be a memory that they will never forget. Our crew brings alive the IOWA daily, safely, in all that they do. There are a lot of rumors swirling on how; it has been months of planning and electrical improvements to accomplish. Our crew is here to highlight the importance of all historic ships in preservation of national ideals. They live by the motto "speak softly and carry a big stick", proudly preserving the legacy of those that served aboard her safeguarding our freedom. Our crew is what keeps the ship alive and this is yet another example of their perseverance and commitment. For those speculating... we did not activate any of the ships power generation or navigation systems nor did we do this to show up any other historic ship. We did this because we have the ability, talent, and need to do so. One ship, one crew.

The main question is that if the fire control system still works and it does there so old but so well made.
