Thanks, I was going to use one of MY Own 'Mo-Boards' ( I took a few of them Off the ship......I hope it Isn't classified...). But the sheet was TOO big for the model turret that I " Removed " off one (1) of my models [can't you hear me crying now....]
Yes...please Do....AND IF, you live near-by, you could ALWAYS Volunteer!! And Since you have knowledge About the BB, we sure would like to hear your "stories / knowledge of what you did onboard!! OS1 (SW) 84 - 05
I served on Iowa March 1987-August 1989. R-Division DC2 (was HT3 before rating split in 1988). I currently work at the shipyard that reactivated Iowa and Wisconsin in the 1980s. Due to the world stage as it is right now, I would support the reactivation/buy back of the Iowas and have upgrades made. Here's why. Yes, turret two is a memorial. That being said, the gun house could be removed and set as a permanent memorial. The turret barbette would make an absolutely fantastic VLS (Vertical Launch System) for missiles, possibly even hypersonics like the Zumwalts are getting. Imagine having a warship capable of destroying essentially an entire fleet and also have capabilities of mopping up the remainder of the at sea battlefield when everyone runs out of missiles. Also, what a wonderful way to honor our fallen shipmates! "You guys did not die in vain! Iowa still lives and fights!" Just my thoughts whether anyone agrees with me or not.
Hey, 'daniel'.... FIRSTLY, Thanks for your Service, Sacrifice, and Time... I was an OS1 during my stints of 84 - 05, serving mostly on FF/FFGs, and you and Many others here on this posting mention the Same Thing!!! That idea has been proposed by the govt, but it will Very Likely...not "sea" the light of Day... But I LIKE your Thinking!!
I took the turret tour in 2023. Amazing! The tour also included a tour of other areas of the ship including the “computer room “ where all the calculations were made to aim and fire the “ big “ guns of the ship. Tour lasted 2 hours. Went by fast!!!
GLAD you Enjoyed the Tour!! Just Wait, when we Open Turret #1 for Tours..... this is the reason for us loading shells down "T3" ..... to move them on the monorail within "Broadway" ..... to pick them up from 3rd Deck to go UP into T1 and Secure 'em. IT Will Happen....it's just a matter of time and getting Dedicated Vols to help Move those shells!!!
Great Video!! I was onboard on June 17th for an overnight as a Scoutmaster and you gave us some great information that night! You mentioned you would be turning #3 then, and now I get to see the after. Thanks for all you do to keep this lady looking great!!!
Roger That, Scoutmaster Farmer!! As I like to say now at the end of the OverNite Tours now is..... "Proud to Serve....Still Serving Proudly, onboard IOWA!" (the Only BB with a 'Turnin Turret') ALSO, I almost forgot, as This Might be the last video I do on IOWA....I plan to help out on the 'Strike Down' of those shells inside T3, sending them across the ship to T1, then UP T1 for Display and Storage..... But THAT might take a a few years due to few Volunteers, and fewer ' young Vols '. I DO want to record it, but SAFETY is Paramount, and TRAINING...making sure We Know What We are Doing!!! Then, hopefully, after a few transits and Experience, I Could record...... IT WILL BE Exciting!!!👍👍👍
Hey Moe! Very nice vid. I'd heard T3 had been turned, but didn't know why. I'm hoping to be there on the nineteenth. I sure miss the ship and all youse guys. Do you know when the projectile move is? I would LOVE to photograph that...
Hey, Pobog..... now you know why we turned T3 (hopefully-if you saw the entire video). As far as the projectiles move.............well......we have those ( and excuse my ignorance of devices ) pulleys on those stanchions on top of the turret, well "SomeBody" [ don't know who...And " I " Don't WANT to Know ], turned on the winch on 2nd Deck to raise (I guess) the Strike Down hatch, Not Realizing, that the hatch was DOGGED!!! As you can imagine, the hook attach to that hatch and the winch in operation ... somethin got to Give ... so the Entire pulley stanchion go BENT, Badly!! I do have a photo, but Mike has instructed us not to share that pic. But I'm sure there are many of us that took pics of the damage. As Far as timetable of lowering projectiles......well that has been delayed, but surprisingly I was talking to "OPS 1" and he says that it can be All Done within 1.5 years, Which I was quite surprised!! And YES, we do miss ya Buddy, we speak of your name Often and I hope to see ya personally soon. Be Good, Safe, and Mischievous!!!
Today I was at the same location I was at on July 2nd or 3rd 1986 next to Ft Wadsworth S.I.N.Y. listening to Rock music being played over the speakers on the USS IOWA moored around 200YDS. off the coast looking up at the Verrazano Bridge. What a memorable day. It was the celebration of the Statue Of Liberty and where the IOWA was to be Home Ported just down the coast around a mile or so. around 3 days later saw her leave the harbor never to see her again. I've visited the New Jersey many times.
YOU Have a OUTSTANDING Recollection of this memory. Thanks for sharing that visual... Although, I was stationed in 'SanDog' (San Diego), I have M A N Y Memories of pulling back into port....although, again, I was an OS in CIC during 'Sea & Anchor Detail' bring the ship in. I was onboard FF/FFGs.
My best friends late father designed alot in the Perry class FFG's and Burke class Destroyers working for Gibbs and Cox. He accompanied us on board the IOWA and CG Normandie which replaced the IOWA at the Home Port. @@Hey_MikeZeroEcho22P
THANKS.... that worksheet is called a "Maneuvering Board", it is a Common worksheet for VERY Precise Navigation. I Can't tell you....HOW Many Times, we would ( Operation Specialists [OS] use this in CIC [Combat Information Center] ) use this for nav, in in training or we need to have a SUPER Accurate ( because sometimes the radar 'skunk' is too blurry to see accurately on the radar screen ) "blip" (the point of the divider pencil) for tracking contacts for close approaches. There are Many other uses of this "Mo-Board", but You need to Join the Navy to find out!!😉
Well, Let ME Thank YOU..... for setting up and finishing IOWA to what she is now!!! GRANTED, there is STILL MUCH work that needs to be done on IOWA, but we are getting it done little-by-little!
You know you have a nice piece of equipment when you need untold steps of approval just to rotate the rotating thingy just slightly, because it's so massive it interrupts the flow of traffic.
Yes...there were Several people around the outside of T3 and inside.....keeping Constant Comms to rotate it around. And, Yes...Good observation of "flow of traffic"......many here on the 'Comments' section say that the barrels "hanging off the side" 'don't interrupt traffic' of the Channel when it Would!!!
Thank You, for the comment!!👍👍👍 ...And This is Just the "Set-up" to get things Ready!! I hope to show you all on HOW we "STRIKE DOWN" those shells AND Transfer them.......But personally, " I " Hope to assist in that transfer, it Will take a Bit of time, because Our Volunteers Are ...... few and "wiser"🧠, but we do have a few "fresh meat" Vols.💪
@@LegacyUser Well...... as I mentioned the other day..... I HOPE to assist in that transfer! IOWA is working on a plan of Safety, Order of Procedure (what's first, what's next, etc), and Getting the proper personnel, but MORE Importantly....making Sure That machinery STILL Works (??). It has been more than 30+ years having Turret 3 moving, but the winches, transfer dollies, Electrical Systems, Internal Comms (sound-powered phones, MUCH better than 'walkie-talkies' due to thick armor impeding radio freqs)...ALL Need to be tested and 'Stress Tested'. So, the first set of transfers would be A L L Business, No picts/videos/... SH**!! SAFETY would be Paramount!
-- Google Translate

@@Hey_MikeZeroEcho22P I will continue being a maker of things for all branches. When anyone needs something made to test, I will do it. So, because there’s the I-beam traveling fore to aft to convey the projectiles, that scene in the movie Battleship in which the characters were manually walking a projectile from aft to forward was only for drama and not accurate?
Sure, a High Capacity shell can be carried by 4 guys with each one carrying 475 pounds on his shoulder. Hmmm, maybe not. The blue ones are cement filled to weigh 1900 pounds to duplicate the ballistics of an HC shell. An Armor Piercing shell weighs 2700 pounds, or 675 pounds per man to carry..... ua-cam.com/video/ninprMpD5RM/v-deo.html
I Hope I can.... I DO want to do a video on those who Helped up get T3 Movin'!!! I'm not an electrical guy, but I do want to know it a bit better!! Keep on Watchin for future video of my model builds also!!
SIR!!! Thank You very Much!! I enjoy making and researching These videos on IOWA, and although this was one (1) of my jobs when I served in the USN ( NGFS = Naval Gun Fire Support).... I had to re-learn some of these "Mo-Boards", I Really haven't played around with them in a L O N G Time, those things were used in Navigation and getting a Very Accurate reading of ships in a possible collision course(s) and a few other things. Oh, OH..... EQ?!! = Earthquake??!! Time 2139 PST, VERY Short, SHARP 'Bang'!! (Looked it up, just nine (9) miles from where I live!)
Well......Sometimes ships Could get a bit close...but THEY Know the 'Rules of Navigation', it is the small, private boats, some sail boats that Don't. As a person who works in CIC (Combat Information Center), I'm one of those who does navigation taking the ship in/out to sea. And Believe me....Those "captains" Very RARELY, know the Rules of Navigation. AND if they are traveling at night....
Howdy, 'M_Miles'...... " I " Really don't think so. For Pretty Obvious reasons for Turret 2, but as for Turret 1.... probably Not either, although I don't believe that THAT turret didn't suffer any damage back in '89. BUT, IF you saw my 'Graphic Explanation' of Turret 1 it would have (B) SO (B) Little clearance, That if you transversed T1, there would Probably be about a four (~4) foot (~1.2m) clearance that people would have to crawl under the barrels...... Not a good idea for Anybody ( can you imagine people bumpin their heads ==🤕). AND Besides.... those barrels would protrude beyond the outline of the ship!! [NOTE: Even though T3 does protrude, the barrels are elevated At least 8 - 10 feet (2.4 - 3.1m)...I've seen people coming out of our Gift Shop and saw this one tall fellow, touching the bottom of the barrel with his hands]. IF you take a look at my "(Longer Version)" of Turret 3, you can see the barrels DO Protrude out....maybe about 4 - 5 feet (1.2 -1.3m), but I'm Sure the Coast Guard would have something to say and THEN it becomes "A Shipping Hazard, due to sunken ship or obstruction", I KNOW....that was one of my jobs in the USN to Label/Update ALL 'NOTICE TO MARINERS' on my charts { It was ALWAYS A Pain in da A** } to find All those buoys and relabel them and that is done Weekly, I believe. But, Again...... let me find out for sure and I'll get back to ya.👍👍👍
@@M_Miles "Cool Beans!!!" I glad you remember the Tour I gave you awhile back. Even though I am finishing off my videos of Turret 3, there is a Possibility of a few more vids onboard IOWA...... So, Stay Tuned!!! And 'Sub'👍👍👍👍👍
Turret #2 is N O T accessible ..... To Anybody. Oh, Sure...we have our Memorial to those Men of Turret 2 and THEY are the only ones who Could, if they wanted to visit inside T2 ( although, I haven't seen that happen ). We KNOW who they are. But as welded..... no.
It would be really cool if you could restore the train and elevate systems permanently so that you could move one of the turrets regularly, as it would have done in operation, as part of the museum exhibit. There arent many museum warships that have any systems still operational; every one I have ever visited including the Iowa are static displays. Obviously there are good reasons for that, but still its a shame that there cant be a commemorative navy the way there is a commemorative air force. It would be great to make the ship feel alive by having some systems operational.
Well......... "It Would be Cool", But.......... 1) What if the system failed....say if the turret was transversed and it failed in returning to centerline = Navigation Hazard!! 2) Do we have enough Trained Men/Women that know how to run the equipment/trouble-shoot/maintain it = Not enough. 3) When, How Much, = When will we do it....Special Events ( which one(s) {how bout B-days????!!}, how much will it cost .... IS That feasible?? ==> no, no. Sure museums are static, with a few of them flying or driving and even Less sailing, but "what IF..." those planes crash, cars don't function/explode, ship sinks..... You JUST Lost the history for M A N Y others, for your pleasure. BUT " I " think....... the museums are "Alive" with the Men and Some Women, who know the stories. AND If you did visit IOWA....did you see LANE VICTORY.........?? She DID, before COVID, sail before, now look at her....not enough people, nobody knows how to repair boilers...let alone has the time, Not enough cares. Nope.
@@Hey_MikeZeroEcho22P Yep those are all very legitimate concerns. There is a reason why its not done, though it would be great if it could be. I visited the Iowa pre-Covid in 2016. I have visited a lot of museum ships, and I was amazed by how raw everything was on Iowa compared to other ships. It felt very different. I believe Iowa has only been a museum since 2011 if memory serves me right, and as of my visit many spaces were not open to tours yet. Some spaces you could look in through the hatch, but not enter. It gave the feeling that the ship was fresh out of mothballs. I admire all the hard work that the volunteers have done. If I lived close I would be volunteering myself. I have a piece of the original teak decking that was being replaced at the time on my desk. They were selling 3 inch chunks of it to fund the museum at the time I was there. I haven't been to New Jersey or Missouri, but I definitely want to go.
@@wouldntyouliketoknow9891 Each ship is different, between NEW JERSEY, MISSOURI, HORNET, CONTITUTION, etc,etc,etc...... And, YES, we DO Have Several places open......I JUST mentioned to another commenter, that we have the "Engineering Tour", the "Gun Tour", and eventually ( within the decade?? ).....Turret 1 tour. Happy that you helped us out financially of purchasing the teak, but There is M U C H More that needs to be done on IOWA....It Takes Time (!!) and a L O T of Volunteers!!! Been Volunteering/Working on IOWA since she berth in San Pedro....and there is Always somethin' new!! And to listen to Veterans that Were on the ship, or, like me, who were in the USN ( I was onboard FF/FFGs for my Entire 20+ years in the USN ).........The Ship comes Alive!! @@AmericanThunder NOPE..... we won't do that either. Under USN Regs, you do that, they will think we are getting 'Underway' and take our ship away.... But, let us know when you become... (ahem) a millionaire. Sounds like you listen to the 80s rock group 'ABC'.
Don't know.... since we have not begun that scenario. BUT, it is being planned upon...AND I'm not a Gunner's Mate (GM), but an Operation Specialists (OS) { I'm the one in the movie 'Top Gun' [the first movie], where they are in that darken room with little light and radars going around....That's My Job }.
True, but Maybe not in this occasion, because I F ... we are Not able to return Turret 3 back to centerline AND the barrels are hanging off the port side of the ship.....WE are a Navigation Hazard!!
Vending machine at turret 3. In the Rec room at NAS Key West in 1973 we had a vending machine that dispensed a can of beer for 25 cents. Thanks, Zumwalt!
Yes, Turret #2 is NOT Functional. And Nothing was repaired to make it such. After the internal explosion, the turret was eventually brought back to centerline and then closed off, not welded. Then placed into mothballs in '91 until we received it in 2011 in Richmond, CA. But this is The LAST, I'll be mentioning T2, because That is not what the video is about ....and Will Not do a video on Turret #2.
Without watching the video first: "To scare the begeezus out of whoever we're aiming at!" ? :)) After watching the video: "Ahhh,. that makes perfect sense." :)
Thanks for the comment 'Tiger313NL'!! Glad This video explains "Why" we did what we did, but with many others Still curious...I did the other video on "How" we did it with video interviews with the ones that Actually worked within the turret. But, It Will take awhile to "Strike Down" the shells...IOWA is in the process in going over how to do that SAFELY with the personnel we have. I just hope to be able to get some footage of what that would look like.....But THAT will take a few 'runs' before ANYBODY gets footage. All Seriousness, All Work!
Hello, 'YTers'...I just want to let you know that I will NOT explain what happen on Turret 2, this is NOT what the video is about, so please, do NOT ask me, "What happen on Turret 2?". If you do, I will just redirect you to the 'Description' above. Thank you for your understanding and I hope I was not rude to Anybody about this 'pinned' comment.🙂👍👍👍
Yeap. Even though this Question/comment has been answered Several times.... The obstruction is enough (about 15 or18 feet, although I have never measured it), is enough to be a shipping hazard due to ships in a narrow channel. AND Every-once-in-awhile, you have ships passing by each other, Plus (+) if there is a container ship moored across the channel from us it narrows it even more, then how are the navigators/pilots (people guiding the ship into the harbor WHO Know all the obstructions) are they Qualified?? Then there is the winds/tides that COULD shift. So...how do you solve the problem?? Don't 'hang' the barrels Outside the Outline of the Ship!! Thus, Only Turret 3 is able to do that (not protruding outside the outline of the ship's rails) AND they line up the pulleys for 'striking down' the shells below!
I just came across your channel. Great stuff! I just have one question from over here in the sticks of Ohio. But why couldn’t a strong temporary crane/boom have been welded over the hatches exactly where needed? It’d be a simple thing to remove & cover so it’d look like it’d never been touched. I know the logical simplest solutions are often not the Navy or Government way but if that is the reason I’d be all ears. Thanks!
THAT is a GREAT Question..... To, Probably, put it simply............. there were a L O T of nay-sayers, "...can't be done", "there's NO Way!", "impossible", etc...... In FACT, We (IOWA Volunteers and 'Higher UPS') weren't too sure either, but After Much (ahem) debate, we thought we give-it-a-go.... The OPS Vols are Dedicated men/women...some with the knowledge, some Former Veterans, like myself, ( Though I am a Former radar operator = Operations Specialist [OS] was my "rate/job" in the USN ) and we concluded that, "YEAH, Lets give it a try and see if the Girl Can Still work!!" So we tested the equipment, clean several switch-boards, made it look all dolled up, got some NEW cables, and Basically, told the other BBs to ....... "STAND-BY, ONE!" and made them eat their words!!! Now, why not use a crane.....why, Should we.... since we STILL had the rigs, motors, personnel, All on the Ship??!! And besides, Its Cheaper!! Didn't want to spend the $$,$$$ Extra that we were "Paying" some Expert Volunteers $$$$ that we HAVE on the ship. So, simply put, We Have All of The Equipment & Personnel & we wanted the nay-sayers to ......(AHEM)...... eat their words..... But, just FYI, I'll be switching to a NEW Channel for Any more IOWA "stuff"...but will post MayBe one (1) or two (2) more videos on IOWA before Permanently switching over. This Channel will STILL have the "older" videos of IOWA, here, but since THIS Channel is for my hobby....model building, I am rededicating that hobby here. The New Channel is 'Bludabeagle'....so You can see my models here, BUT 'Sub' for IOWA stuff on the 'Blu' Channel.
Why not im glad they did it .its awesome that it works . It was very uplifting and patriotic to see it works . We need to keep them greased and working incase we ever need to use one of the 4 . The navy and government should give money to the museum to keep them in basic working order. They waste so much money on everything else why not use some of our tax dollars to keep these bad boys as functional as possible until we design another battleship. We need the Wisconsin put back on the registry and put on permanent stand by.
Well........the idea of getting the BBs 'back-on-line', Will not happen, simply ........ missiles go further. But before you argue, "right, why not put a 'whole-bunch-O-missiles' onboard these ships!!!" We just Don't have the funding, the people on Da Hill won't support it, although There WERE plans to do that to the IOWA-class, it was Never implemented. So, Great having BBs in games, but not in the real world anymore......that's like having a Calvary Charge in Ukraine..... BUT, as for the comment on keeping the turrets fit, well we try to, with the limited $$$$, and qualified people. For Sure, we will keep the Turret that will be part of the Tour, once we open it up in TOP Notch Looks....as for moving the ENTIRE turret....well, probably not. Having the elevators or magazine rings moving.......Likely ( but, Don't quote me on that! ).
imagine for a moment that this ship is an active battleship, you are in a modern day enemy ship and you get a visual of the Iowa triple 16 in turrent turning toward you with intentions of firing on your position....What do you do??
HAH...... It's Been 'Played' .......... BY ME!!! I am, well...was.... a USN Operations Specialist back in the 80s. And, Once-upon-a-time, my Squadron of ships, went against a BB and a CGN in the Pacific, my ship was second in a column of Line, closing onto both "enemy ships". As we closed, the first FFG was taken out by EIGHT (8) anti-ship missiles, by the CGN, next was My ship. My FFG was taken out by Eight (8) anti-ship missiles from the BB, while the third ship, an FFG, was taken out by Six (6) ASMs coming off the cruiser (lucky Bast***). The fourth/final FFG , wasn't taken out by ASMs....instead it was hit by a 3-salvo shot from the BB.............. Needless-to-say.....I said a "classic line" as I was the one who was to fire OUR ASMs at those ships, well We didn't HAVE Quad-launchers, we had to fire one (1) shot at a time. So, I turned around after the third ship got taken out, by saying, "WHO Da H E L L, came out with THIS Scenario??!!!!" The Staff officer (who I didn't know was in CIC) said, "......I don't know, but We Should Kill Dat Guy."......... Little did I know...........
(?) Time Stamp is ... incorrect?? IF you are mentioning Maneuvering Board....Yes, I have a few of those, just to ~kinda practice (thou I retired almost twenty [20] years ago). But I have a large model of the NEW JERSEY that I ....."RIPPED OUT" the turret, just to show that visual...
Why......why, would you fire it?? 1) IOWA is now a museum ship, IN a populated area less than a 1/4 mile away. 2) We Have fired a mortar round (firework) from Turret 1 and it caused damage across that same populated area (windows) ... ua-cam.com/video/dd2TH4JKlR8/v-deo.html 3) Would YOU want to fire VERY O L D Gunpowder that hasn't been used in DECADES......we did that once back in 89 in Turret 2 and 3B) I don't even know .... if that gunpowder is Even Stored/Preserved for Long-term storage ......Let alone even made. But as far as being disabled.....no, but you do need a TRAINED CREW and Experienced 'Instructors' (original crew members).
It's freaking cool to turn a battleship's turret, what more reason do you need? Sure, you may have caused a brown out in the local power grid, but they'll get over it.
Nope........ I don't have spaces to clean because I'm a First Class Petty Officer with 20+ years ( AND 660+ 'Subs'!!! ) As far as YOUR Channel...... you need to make RANK and ... "MIND YOUR PANEL!!" - Crimson Tide /s BUT as far as the 'chow line', I Wish I could, but I have to "...go on Watch!!"
More of not having the facilities and "man"power (I assume that last comment). BUT onboard IOWA we have VERY Dedicated crews doing various portions of the ship, but Still, we are undermanned....so We Do our Best!!
Thanks for the nice explanation. Are they still original munitions just disabled, or are they fake just made to look real? Any powder bags on display as well? If so, are they filled with sawdust or something else?
Great Question.... the shells are REAL...they have the weight, but N O Explosives..........(so are they dummy rounds?) I have seen them getting a fresh coat of paint to make them "green" ( HC Rounds = Explosives), but I believe that they are just the "blue" Practice Rounds = No Explosives, that GMs (Gunner's Mates) actually practice shooting out of the 16" guns. As far as the "powder bags"...those are fake with cement or sawdust (when I do Tours with Scouts, I "Pretend" that it is a 110 lbs (50kg) powder bag....and hand it over to one of the smaller Scouts) I had one (1) drop it, though..... 💥 ☠
HAHahaha....Ahhhh...... that would be the ...... Shells. Funny how that line played out! Other-than-that......what did You find interesting about this video??
Why, would we put powder ..... in the turret, near-by a residential area??👎 2) Would YOU want to load V E R Y OLD powder bags to do........ What???!!!👎👎👎👎👎
Thank you for this detailed explanation of these turrets, petty officer Mares! Looking at them turret hatches, I'm reminded of my years in deck division and how I'd ALWAYS volunteer for a tiger team! Working in unseen and new areas of the ship always intrigued me. Loved our ciws guns (R2D2 with a hard on, lol!). Cool to know you're an ordinance specialist, Moe! 🇺🇲🚢❤️
Thanks 'Ant'...Good to Hear from ya!!! I Think of A L L of my 'Bro-N-Arms' as I do these videos.... Those I Served with, Those I Know who Served and Those I AM with onboard IOWA!!
Nope......Not going to do that..... Check out the next video I made, "HOW How did we Turn Turret 3..." ua-cam.com/video/eljuCHnJ_nk/v-deo.html It is mentioned by Chief Moser, check it out...
Too bad it's that much work to turn it. Turning turrets on special occasions, like the fourth for example, would bring more revenue to help with maintaining the ship
It IS a Great Idea, but "just the worry, if the machinery fails or a hidden electrical problem" it COULD hurt is financially, and Besides.....I'm not in charge. ALSO, for All "I" know, the idea Might have been floated around.....
Well.....each shell weighs ~2000 lbs (907kg), but N O Explosives ( contrary to what some 'commenters' want to do with these shells ).

As I like to say now at the end of the OverNite Tours now is..... "Proud to Serve....Still Serving Proudly, onboard IOWA!" (the Only BB with a 'Turnin Turret')
ALSO, I almost forgot, as This Might be the last video I do on IOWA....I plan to help out on the 'Strike Down' of those shells inside T3, sending them across the ship to T1, then UP T1 for Display and Storage..... But THAT might take a a few years due to few Volunteers, and fewer ' young Vols '. I DO want to record it, but SAFETY is Paramount, and TRAINING...making sure We Know What We are Doing!!!

What a memorable day. It was the celebration of the Statue Of Liberty and where the IOWA was to be Home Ported just down the coast around a mile or so. around 3 days later saw her leave the harbor never to see her again. I've visited the New Jersey many times.

-- Google Translate

And Believe me....Those "captains" Very RARELY, know the Rules of Navigation. AND if they are traveling at night....

Do you guys plan on turning any other turrets for special events or something like that?
IF you take a look at my "(Longer Version)" of Turret 3, you can see the barrels DO Protrude out....maybe about 4 - 5 feet (1.2 -1.3m), but I'm Sure the Coast Guard would have something to say and THEN it becomes "A Shipping Hazard, due to sunken ship or obstruction", I KNOW....that was one of my jobs in the USN to Label/Update ALL 'NOTICE TO MARINERS' on my charts { It was ALWAYS A Pain in da A** } to find All those buoys and relabel them and that is done Weekly, I believe.

yes.
Is turret 2 accessible for y’all because it was welded shut after the explosion?
Love video but when the explosion happened I thought everything was repaired in turret 2? Your saying it’s not functional how?
Yes, Turret #2 is NOT Functional. And Nothing was repaired to make it such.
After the internal explosion, the turret was eventually brought back to centerline and then closed off, not welded. Then placed into mothballs in '91 until we received it in 2011 in Richmond, CA.

If you do, I will just redirect you to the 'Description' above. Thank you for your understanding and I hope I was not rude to Anybody about this 'pinned' comment.🙂👍👍👍
That boggles my mind... the turret will impede shipping traffic??? WOW
The OPS Vols are Dedicated men/women...some with the knowledge, some Former Veterans, like myself, ( Though I am a Former radar operator = Operations Specialist [OS] was my "rate/job" in the USN ) and we concluded that, "YEAH, Lets give it a try and see if the Girl Can Still work!!"
So we tested the equipment, clean several switch-boards, made it look all dolled up, got some NEW cables, and Basically, told the other BBs to .......
Having the elevators or magazine rings moving.......Likely ( but, Don't quote me on that! ).
Do you have to use the turret pulley system, or would a makeshift pulley work?
OH.....NO MAKESHIFT S*** here!!!
Really?? Do you want to be lowering a one (1) ton shells (2,000 lbs/902kg) down FIVE (5) Decks (~75 ft/23m)??!!!🤔🤨
imagine for a moment that this ship is an active battleship, you are in a modern day enemy ship and you get a visual of the Iowa triple 16 in turrent turning toward you with intentions of firing on your position....What do you do??
Rethink many life choices that put me there.
Good to Go
Roger That!!!
Enjoyed the explanation 15:15
(?) Time Stamp is ... incorrect??
IF you are mentioning Maneuvering Board....Yes, I have a few of those, just to ~kinda practice (thou I retired almost twenty [20] years ago). But I have a large model of the NEW JERSEY that I ....."RIPPED OUT" the turret, just to show that visual...
Question is turret 3 still able to fire or is that system completely disabled?
Nope....no brown out..... Not on the ship, nor locals.
Hey Moe, you look like you have spent most of your service time at the chow line. 😮Don’t you have a space to clean?😮
Nope........ I don't have spaces to clean because I'm a First Class Petty Officer with 20+ years ( AND 660+ 'Subs'!!! )
As far as YOUR Channel...... you need to make RANK and ... "MIND YOUR PANEL!!" - Crimson Tide /s
BUT as far as the 'chow line', I Wish I could, but I have to "...go on Watch!!"
Can't New Jersey turn its guns, or no shore power??
More of not having the facilities and "man"power (I assume that last comment). BUT onboard IOWA we have VERY Dedicated crews doing various portions of the ship, but Still, we are undermanned....so We Do our Best!!
Thanks for the nice explanation. Are they still original munitions just disabled, or are they fake just made to look real? Any powder bags on display as well? If so, are they filled with sawdust or something else?
Great Question.... the shells are REAL...they have the weight, but N O Explosives..........(so are they dummy rounds?)
I have seen them getting a fresh coat of paint to make them "green" ( HC Rounds = Explosives), but I believe that they are just the "blue" Practice Rounds = No Explosives, that GMs (Gunner's Mates) actually practice shooting out of the 16" guns. As far as the "powder bags"...those are fake with cement or sawdust (when I do Tours with Scouts, I "Pretend" that it is a 110 lbs (50kg) powder bag....and hand it over to one of the smaller Scouts) I had one (1) drop it, though..... 💥 ☠
At 1:57 are you strapping down the shells for display or the young volunteers 😂😂😂😂😂
HAHahaha....Ahhhh...... that would be the ...... Shells.
Funny how that line played out!
Other-than-that......what did You find interesting about this video??
@@Hey_MikeZeroEcho22P I just think it’s cool that the turrets still turn and they weren’t permanently disabled by the navy.
I’m assuming if u put a round in turret 3 and more importantly the powder, the gun is still operational correct ?
Why, would we put powder ..... in the turret, near-by a residential area??👎
2) Would YOU want to load V E R Y OLD powder bags to do........ What???!!!👎👎👎👎👎
Why not?
@@Hey_MikeZeroEcho22P Amen, brother!
Next step: fire up the boilers
Nope......Not going to do that.....
Check out the next video I made, "HOW How did we Turn Turret 3..." ua-cam.com/video/eljuCHnJ_nk/v-deo.html
It is mentioned by Chief Moser, check it out...
Since you loaded up those “shells,” any chance you can “send ‘em” toward LA City hall??? Clean LA up.
Why?? We Might hit you, the blast radius is Quite large!!
@@Hey_MikeZeroEcho22P Hahaha, I’ll duck!
170 TONS? I hope those are all de-milled!
Well.....each shell weighs ~2000 lbs (907kg), but N O Explosives ( contrary to what some 'commenters' want to do with these shells ). But we NEED the weight, because not only are we Going to DISPLAY the shells, but also they will serve in Providing BALLAST for the forward part of the ship, so we can remove freshwater ballast in our tanks/voids.
@@Hey_MikeZeroEcho22P So you have 170 tons of dummy projectiles? What's taking the place of explosive in them? Cement?
@@PrimarchX Well.... they are PROBABLY the "dummy shells" which weigh in at 1900 lbs (862kg), we just paint them "green" to represent the "HC Rounds" (High Capacity = Explosive).
@@PrimarchX The Blind Loaded Plugged target practice inert shells are cement filled to equal the weight and ballistics of a High Capacity 1900 pound high explosive shell. The Armor Piercing rounds are a bit taller but weigh 2700 pounds.
I’ll cry later, yep he’s a GM3
Actually.....I'm an Operations Specialist, Petty Officer First Class (Surface Warfare) when I retired.OS1 (SW)....
But, I was 'cryin' because I had to Sacrifice a piece of a model to demo this graphic representation of the "turnin' turret"....I hope the graphic came out well!!
My dad retired as 1st class gmm1 warfare specialist and my uncle was on the uss Iowa in 1989 when turret 2 exploded
@@annoyedone4728 Thank Your DAD for His Service, Sacrifice, and Time from a Former OS1 (SW)....what type of ship was your Dad onboard??

Far as my uncle I have no clue but his name is Charles jhonston he was station on uss Iowa in 1989 he also has the memorial flag from the uss iowa
Traffic? Tell them to go around. ha ha
Wish we could......... especially the small boats!!!
I wouldn’t turn turret 2 but i would grease the gears on all 3.
Why, would you want to "grease the gears on all three (3)" and Not turn Turret 2......BUT in your previous comment, You want to send WISCONSIN back into the Fleet??!!
Wasting monies??!!
rebuild turret #2
sure.......... give us the $,$$$,$$$,$$$ of YOUR PowerBall

@@jerredwayne8401 RIGHT..... Not a well thought out comment. We D O (B) NOT (B) have Any of the factories to do this again. Besides.....missiles go further, no need for build battleships anymore!
Those 'Gray Ladies' Had their days..like the dinosaurs, AND like the dinosaurs....well, you know.
@@Hey_MikeZeroEcho22Pwill a couple XRP tokens be enough to rebuild turret#2? Nay instead I think I’ll use them to buy a yacht.
Sounds like the drydock chosen is the wrong one. I would hate to read that a Chinese cargo ship ran into this Icon of WWII. What were the people in charge thinking?
Well, I haven't heard of that..... NORMALLY, there is a schedule of event, thou not privy on that info. SO, I Don't Think, such a thing would happen.....where did you get your "Read" from??!! Give Honest answer.
Those barrels are not hundreds of feet long. I just don’t see how the turrets being turned to the side impede shipping in the port of Los Angeles. Honestly, I don’t think any ship would get within 100 feet of the Iowa.
Well.....granted, the barrels Don't extend that far off the ship, just 23.5 ft/7.2m, let me ask You, then.........
Are You Qualified for Navigation....Do You Know the 'Rules of the Navigation'......Do You Know what a 'LNM' are/and how Often you need to check them..... Do You Sail...... Can You row a boat...... which way is the ship moving if you see two (2) whites one on top of each other and a red light mean.....What is a 'Lighted Whistle Buoy'...how often does it whistle near the breakwater????
If You Can't Answer ANY of these questions without Looking it up.........Then You ARE NOT QUAL, as I Am!
USN Veteran of 20+ years doing Nav because, "Sailors Belong on Ships....Ships Belong At SEA!!!"
Stick to your four (4) videos/Subs....'subman'....lastly....BOATS get within 100 feet of IOWA (use all CAPS, representing USN ships)
Oh, by-the-way....Once my Ships were out to sea....my Other Job is "hunting subs", as ASWO.
