Jimmy DiResta made some skeleton blades - a blade that is just a metal section without the handle. A bunch of us on the Maker Mob are each doing our own projects with this blade. My project is to turn a handle for the blade on the lathe. As Jimmy has his brand on the handle section, I wanted to be able to see that through the handle. My handle sandwiches the blade between a piece of walnut and a piece of plexiglass. I then turned the walnut and plexiglass into a round, comfortable handle. It is slipped onto the blade and held in place with two screws.

FRANK !! i am honored to be in your video!!!!! thank you for your special touch!!! ✊🏻👊🏻🙏🏻
It's your turn now, you should make a solid brass bowl in Frank's video style 😂
Beautiful looking end result. Agreed on the functionality comment. I kept thinking, the Forged in Fire judges would be mentioning you couldn't index that thing!
Yeah, looking good, but it is definitely too thick for use. It is because of the turning, usually the knife handles are slimmed down on the sides for a better grip.
Jimmy you absolute legend
I know Im randomly asking but does anybody know a tool to log back into an instagram account..?
I was stupid forgot the login password. I love any assistance you can offer me!
People who have never seen Jimmy's videos are like, 'Why isn't Frank talking?' 😂
Love the homage. Well done.
Frank's too nice to throw things down on the bench as roughly as Jimmy... but he made the effort, haha.
You need to pay to hear jimmy talking nowadays.
@@ElectraFlarefire Nowadays? Um... With a few expeditions, his videos are mostly been without voice overs.
@@DisturbedShifty A lot of his early videos had voiceovers and explanations as he's doing things.
When he started to do the patrion and similar premium services they went behind the paywall. You just get the squeaky sped up background audio now.
And I could be wrong, memory is a dodgy thing after all and been watching him for a few years now. :)
@Electra Flarefire Yeah. You're wrong. His style has alway been sped up videos with no voice over. He was making videos before Patreon was even a thing.
The first video he has of him making things in his shop was nine years ago. Title Key Clip. No audio. Again, that is his style. There are videos before that but they se to be part of failed TV shows or videos made for a portfolio.
Business in the front, party in the back. Literally.
Some people get annoyed when the ads are occasionally interrupted by content, but I quite like it.
I appreciate the nod to Jim; yet, I prefer the dialogue
The only thing this was missing is the sped-up radio in the background 😂
The turning of the plexiglass was really interesting. Now that you know you can do it, I can't wait to see what other ideas you come up with.
Fun indeed, Frank. Yet again you show multiple skills making the DiResta knife handle. Thanks for sharing it.
And if you remove the blade, it kind of looks like... uh, nevermind. Happy thanksgiving Frank!
Got a Sticker on both ends
Nice flared base for it too
a #2 hole Plug. Nice to see that im not the only small boy
There's zero mystery why this world is failing.
Makes me wonder how many toys he has built 🤔
I've been an acrylic fabricator for over 22 years and it is very nice to see someone else working with this material CORRECTLY!! Very nice job Frank!!
First time I didn't like something Frank made. Cool proof of concept as far as turning plexiglass, but he had to have known it looks like a butt plug. Reminds me of the movie Se7en (Lust sin...). Still, thanks for making something and showing us. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
That makes it a dual-purpose tool. Quite clever in my opinion.
@@Face_Meat Lol, that's a butt half-full kind of interpretation; guess I need to work on being more optimistic.
You sure seem to know a lot about butt plugs. I think ye doth seem to protest too much.
@@jamesogorman3287 Is there something wrong with knowing a lot about butt plugs?
Wow, you butchered that saying. Also, no protest from me, mine vibrates and is awesome. But I wouldn't want a knife sticking out of it.
That is a fine looking Handle.
The amount of material you start with vs. the amount you need always reminds me of that Simpsons-Bowling Episode where they turn an entire trunk into one pin tho :D
Without any commentary, it took me a wee while to figure out what you were going for. 😁
What a great result: maybe not the most functional of knives but it looks fantastic.
It that was mine, I'd display it just simply stuck into a wooden surface, somewhere prominent in the workshop. 👍
Frank I love your craftsmanship and would generally refer to you as a designer which is really your strong suit , I was watching TOT make a handle for a dust pan and it came out looking like a knife handle and your knife handle came out looking like a dust pan handle. It looks good and nicely done but clearly function follows form by a country mile here.
You should carve "Howarth" in the wood under the Plexiglas. It's a collaborative effort.
Too late now
@@ivarlaupet8972 Just unscrew it?
@@Davey768 Oh, I thought he glued it as well. Guess I was wrong.
Beautiful combination of wood and plexi!
So many negative comments. So not needed. It is a design experiment to see how workable the plexiglas is. Sometimes it is better just to remain silent. Frank's videos are always among the best on the Tubes.
I assumed you'd flatten the faces of it after turning, would've made it more functional a knife.
I think the old adage about making assumptions fits nicely here.
yeah me too, but then it wouldn't look like a buttplug anymore
Yeah handle is pretty but looks awful big
Disappointed that you didn't immediately throw the knife pointy and into you desk and exclaim 'Thankyou!'
Beautiful work as always, Frank. I love the idea of you guys collaborating on projects, really fun to watch!
Excellent work Frank! =)
I love that you did the video Jimmy style. 😂
It’s wild to see a bunch of my favorite UA-camrs all release this video on their channels. Cool idea!
Who are the others ?
Coolest knife handle I’ve ever seen.
That was awesome! And we watch Jimmy, so anxious to see them all! Thanks Frank, love your videos! Happy Thanksgiving 🦃
Awesome work Frank. I love that the edit came across as a “Howarth does Diresta”, not a carbon copy of a Jimmy video; more of an ode to
Beautiful work Frank, knife looks great and loved the homage to Jimmy’s style of videos 😁
Love this video. Great homage to Jimmy.
A rare Howarth video I didn’t like and stopped early
Love the double nod
I love that most of the folks made Diresta style vids while working with his knife. Love thé look of this one.
This is the second time you and This Old Tony release the same project at the around the same day. Weird serendipity!
awesome work Frank thanks
Heavy is good, heavy is reliable. If it doesn't work you can always hit them with it.
Something that might improve this build would be to get This Old Tony to make some stainless fasteners that could be buffed to mirror finish, and have no threads visible.
Colin Furze posted a video this same day and, possibly he but definetly, someone in the comments mentioned This Old Tony. I choose not to watch Diresta, but I'll have a look at This Old Tony.
@@timetravellingbunny3952 I don't mind Diresta, but don't watch his milling videos. The worst of the Mob channels is Steve Ramsey. I dared to mention his audio echo once, and got a mouthful of arrogant 'I have better things to worry about than audio quality, and I am very important so FU'. I have never watched his channel since. Pask Makes is a wee bit like that as well, so it might be an Australian thing. As a toolmaker it hurts my heart to see some of the wood channel guys butcher metal, and Diresta does nice metal work.
@@TrevorDennis100 I didn't know Steve Ramsey was part of Maker's Mob. His approach is fine for people just getting involved with woodworking. I am more experienced and lean toward Paul Sellers or Rob Cosman for hand woodworking inspiration. Diresta's personality, image, and online presentation are not to my liking. Metal is not my medium, but I enjoy good craftsmanship (e.g., Uri Tuchman, ClickSpring) and just plain craziness, i.e., Colin Furze.
Wait, if Frank walked in from the front door of the woodshop, then who was the one who put the mug down on the table?!
It does say NY. But let's be realistic. If it was Jimmy it would be branded DiResta
I think it was Future Frank using the time machine current Frank will build out of home milled cedar.
How many people read this comment and heard the Twilight Zone sound track?
Frank has a bunch of clones of himself. They sometimes appear in other videos. I guess he keeps them in the shop.
It's so crazy seeing a drill press with no appreciable runout.
Beautiful Job Frank!
New York/Oregon mug swap was a nice touch!
Looks great Frank. Nice work.
So cool when superhero shows do crossover episodes 😯
Wasn't sure why my wife was taking such a keen interest in this piece, but then when I finally saw it....well....it could be functional, just maybe not for its intended purpose....
Beautiful
Good job Frank!
I love the Diresta style video for a change up
End Game: I’m the greatest crossover in history.
This video: hold my sandpaper.
Excellent work Frank! That sure turned out great....... 👍👍👏👏😉😉
Looks like everybody's video on this dropped today. I know what I'll be watching while everybody else naps today! I like your take on this one, definitely fits your style. Thanks for sharing!
Always look forward to a new Frank video. So slick!
Now I feel like I need to watch all that again at double speed for the full effect.
You could have made indents in the wood to match the diresta logo instead of leaving gaps. And maybe even make some kind of mechanism where the three parts interlock in a way that you can add more invisible fasteners.
I'm going to assume the person getting this blade has giant hands.
so Frank finally showed his kinkiness 🤭
I love all you videos and I’m hoping you’ll be making a Christmas ornament related one again this year. I think those are the first videos of yours I ever watched and I’ve been hooked for years.
(Though if you haven’t felt inspired to make some this year I totally understand. Plus you had your huge basement project and all your Makers stuff)
That's a huge handle.
Круто! Диреста легенда! Благодаря его каналу, я заинтересовался контентом и нашел другие подобные, в том числе и Френка!
First of all, let's address the most important thing: YOU'RE POSTING IN 4K NOW?! I love it.
Second of all, yeah, that doesn't seem like the most functional handle, but I'm not a fan of cylindrical knife handles in general, for actual use they're terrible. This one seems way out of proportion to me, like it's way too big and should be thinner and shorter, but perhaps some of that is the image distortion caused by the plexi? It's clearly acting as a magnifying lens to some degree. You didn't really show us a shot of just the wood side, so hard to say.
Really cool idea though, I'm surprised it's that easy to turn plexi. Can't wait to see you use it for something else. I think a combo wood/plexi flower pot could be very, very cool. Especially if you put in some LEDs and, like, extended the plexi inside from the walls in spots so you can see the root system, if that makes sense? Just a thought.
A suggestion: Plane the sides down flat, not-quite parallel to each other (a little narrower on the blade edge side), until it feels comfortable in your hand, then blend the flat sides into your round upper and lower surfaces It'll be a lot more stable in your hand, and you'll always be able to tel exactly where the blade edge is in relation to your hand...
this is sick
Beautiful design and execution, all around, from you and Jimmy!
...and, always fun to watch. Excellent! Thanks for posting!
Great work!!
Looks cool.
you handled that well
So he sends you the blade and you do DiResta the stuff?
I can't say I know why, but I want to make friends with the tiny cube in this video.
I miss your commentary it was always so relaxing to hear mixed with sounds of machines
Magnificent !
really can tell Frank's not a knife maker!
Beautifully made Frank!! Hope your Thanksgiving was wonderful!!
Looks like a diver knife. Great job!!
Frank in Diresta style 👍
Great work! Love it!
incredible
Fascinating project.
Well done!
That’s cool!
I mean with this handle shape it's definitely gonna be stuck into someone, but it's not gonna be blade first ifkwim 🤣
That’s just amazing ! And I didn’t see it coming 🙏
Very nice.
Frank makes... an ASMR video for woodworkers 😂
Awesome video! Have you ever tried turning a handle with two axial points to get an oval cross section? Its on my list of things to try once I get my shop up and running.
9:56 You really should put a strobing light warning around this part, when watching this full screen in a dark environment the effect is quite intense.
I like the direction you took this. Was hoping you were going to be less cylindrical in the end somehow. Maybe more rounded rectangle ish. Excellent work.
Awesome!
That turned out great. Enjoyed your design and the making of the knife. Happy Thanksgiving!!
just when i thought i have seen everything cool, then he makes this handle. way to go Frank!
Glad to see you and ToT are finally getting a handle on this year. 😊
Also that look plus your lovely wood spheres makes me wonder if you've ever made an old school bowling set. Wood/acrylic pins and a hardwood ball. Maybe a kid-size set?
My wife likes the handle.
Awesome work Frank! 😃👍🏻👊🏻
No talking I love your talking
continually stunned at the incredible amount of wasted material on these builds. could've made 2, possibly 3, with what's now shavings on the floor. still, beautiful outcome.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours, Frank!
The opener was pretty good.. *lemme just dig through this massive hardwood turned bowl filled with maple chunks*
Walnut** my apologies
Just finished John Heisz’s video!
I love your channel
Крутой нож получился!
Me before he put the blade in: 👀
Me after he put the blade in: 😇
It’s probably not the first zap-carry Diresta knife, but it’s likely the most comfortable...
Well done. I have one question, why do you not clip off the corners before turning? It would seem to take less time and be a bit easier.
Great film. Love the shape. Mahalo for sharing!:) 🐒
So far John heisz's blade is the coolest.
@@TigerCarpenter I've watched Neil's video ... it was good too but i liked John's more... but as for this i didn't like it at all ... regardless of the odd shape that looks like (you know) hahaha.
*Happy Thanksgiving, Frank!*
Happy Thanksgiving!
