Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty Everything To Know

- With Nioh director Fumihiko Yasuda and Bloodborne producer Masaaki Yamagiwa at the helm of Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, it's no surprise the upcoming game is one of the most anticipated of 2023. Here's everything you need to know before picking up a copy yourself.
#gaming #WoLongFallenDynasty #gamespot
In Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, players are given the chance to fully customize not only how their character looks, but how they control as well. After creating a character, players will get the option to select one of five "phases," or combat styles: Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, and Earth. These ultimately dictate a character's stats, starting spells, and what divine beast will aid them.
Each phase has a unique focus. Metal is debuffing enemies, wood is healing and support, water is stealth, fire is attack, and earth is defense. As you level up your character over time, you are free to invest experience in any of the five elements, so if you ultimately want to spec out a character who’s focus differs from your starting phase, you are able to do so.
Additionally, players will also have free rein to select what weapon they'd like to use from a wide collection of glaives, sabres, swords, and more, with each weapon having different strengths and weaknesses that play into the different phases.
Core to Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty's gameplay is its morale system, which indicates the strength of both your character and your opponents. By defeating enemies with a higher morale rank than your character, your own morale increases faster and more valuable items will be dropped. Uncovering new checkpoints locks in the base morale rank for both the player and enemies, and if the player is defeated, their morale rank will reset to that baseline when they awaken at their most recently discovered checkpoint.
Combat in Wo Long will be based on traditional martial arts, according to Team Ninja, and will emphasize graceful movement and deflection. Your character has a spirit meter with an orange negative side and blue positive side. When you boot up the game, the meter will be neutral; neither side filled. Successful strikes on enemies will net you positive spirit.
As you use special abilities, block or dodge attacks, or take hits from enemies, that positive spirit will be chipped away, crossing over into the negative if you don’t get any successful hits on an opponent. If the negative side fills up, your character is staggered, which will reset the meter to neutral, but leave you open to attacks for a moment with no ability to defend yourself.
Enemies also have their own spirit meters that work similarly to the player’s, and successfully pushing opponent’s guage’s into the negative will leave them open for a takedown once filled.
Certain attacks from enemies can be countered. When winding up, if a red energy fissure appears over the center of them, blocking the following attack at the moment it hits will deflect the enemy, massively negating their spirit meter and leaving them open to a big counter attack from you, or possibly even a takedown if they’re a lower level opponent or their health is depleted enough.
In GameSpot's Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty preview, Phil Hornshaw praised the game's combat, writing:
"The speedy gameplay, the variety of attack options, and the push-and-pull nature of the spirit system make Wo Long feel like a fresh spin on Souls-like games. It captures the difficulty and skill players like about the genre, while pushing a different kind of action game feel, one more akin to some of Team Ninja's other titles. Though we haven't seen all of Wo Long in action yet, Team Ninja's demo does a great job of giving a snapshot of a tough game that starts at the same place as other Souls-likes and goes in an exciting new direction."
Team Ninja has stated Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty will be its most challenging game yet. However, this did not stop the studio from opting out of including difficulty settings.
Though the game might not have difficulty settings, there is a silver lining in the game's multiplayer option, which grants players the ability to summon a friend during tough battles. - Ігри
I hope that this game leads to more games inspired by Chinese mythology and folklore. I love Japanese culture but it'd be nice to see some different countries for a change.
It’s not that they don’t exist they are usually just in Chinese and or not very good…. Like Dynasty warriors, as a kid I loved it but as an adult the base RTK is great the execution through game play is pretty poor…. I’m 100% with you though there needs to be far more like this
Black Myth Wukong is a Chinese myth game as well. Too bad we don't hear much news from it yet. We'll just have to wait until its release next year.
Are the 200 Dynasty Warriors games not enough for you lol
I agree I love these types of games sekiro, ghost of tsushima and now seems like I'm really gonna love wo long
Issue is ALOT of Chinese history has been lost as well due to Mao zudongs communist takeover he destroyed ALOT of there history.
Couldn't put down the demo the other night. This game is fire
Did you play the nioh games?
@Jin Sakai I did indeed.
Is it more like Nioh or Sekiro?
@@Fasmidio it is more like sekiro
@@Fasmidio What the other guy said, more like a faster pace Sekiro if anything. But it's doing its own thing at the same time
They forgot to mention:
Invasions are a thing.
You can befriend and call the help of ai companions.
You can avenge other players for glory or give them a flask to help them avenge themselves.
There are fewer weapon and armor drops BUT you can upgrade and enhance then to your liking no more grinding.
And you can hold block AND parry at the sane time.
Oh and magic is tied to your spirit meter. Use it too much and you'll put yourself in danger.
Hesitation is defeat definitely is my mindset coming into this
Don't forget motivation !
@@MrJoker190 man he was a interesting boss
Ishin Ashina taught us well
That's the thing about these types of games. Hesitation is actually fatal...
I love and hate that quote because isshin is right, that was 95% of the reason I died. Always second guessed myself and hesitated instead of acting
I can't wait. Can't believe it's free to play on game pass. Already downloaded ready to play on RD.
Completed the demo . Great gameplay . Can't wait til Friday
I hope they have some surprises in store for us, because although they said itll be their most challenging game yet I had next to no difficulty with the demos ai or bosses, unlike both nioh games, and ninja gaiden tore me apart in the beginning levels.
@@pokey_tv669 Ok bro, go play the first 2 chapters of nioh 2, the first boss of wo long is harder and has more soul than every enemy and boss in those 2 chapters of nioh 2 lol
@@raptorzeroking4871 harder doesn’t equal better….
@Jin Sakai That's fine. There's plenty of games out you can play then
Friday and then Tuesdays psn games
Those who don't know if you level up Zhao Yun relationship to lvl 10 you get his amor and weapon!
He his weapon and armour good?
Looking forward to this one!
The way the game plays it has more of a focus on Parrying and will force you to parry. It really reminds me of playing Sekiro in that way.
It doesn’t really feel like Sekiro at all.
Sekiro’s animations are actually phenomenal, not only in animation but feel as well. You can feel every attack and block in Sekiro. Definitely cannot say the same for Wo Long.
@@Nighhhts He's talking about mechanically, not about how well it was executed. And it absolutely draws a ton of influence from Sekiro.
@@kazokadas
Yeah, I know, but at the same time, it’s not that greatly executed.
@@Nighhhts Completely agree which is why I’ll be playing Sekiro instead (after completing Elden Ring)

If you haven’t, watch these trailers:
1. Rise of the Ronin
2. Where the Winds Meet
3. Project: The Perceiver
I saved the best for last, in my personal opinion. Reminds a lot of Sekrio mixed with Tsushima.
Wo thats long
Some outdated information, such as the player choosing a phase. This no longer applies, this was very much so a First demo only thing to give more testing range. You start at 1 in all 5 elements and build your way from there.
Even the footage they used is from the previous demos.
Sloppy
game is awesome some nots review missed
* Game has jump button even has double jump it is great.
*Game is perfect mix of sekiro and souls games.
* Best combat mech i ever seen. There is no stamina bar .
* So many cool instant animations occuring during every battle when you riposte enemy.
* Game has jiggle phsics thank you Koe Techmo
3 more days to go. Wooohooo I'm pumped!
its a fast pace Sekiro Souls game, Im definitely getting, im having fun with demos and character creation. i wasnt a big Nioh player countering in Nioh 2 is very iffy. All the weapon combats is very good and stylish
The demon was great can't wait for the full game
I can't wait
I play the demo and love it can't wait to buy it on Friday 😁 since I can't level up pass level 20 on the demo
whats crazy is that developers already got Rise of Ronin coming soon.
Can not wait to see more of that! This studio is one of my absolute favorites.
So happy this is coming to game pass
Can't wait to go get me a copy tomorrow
Man I was addicted to this demo, took off Friday to play this.
Same I took off Saturday
Same haha took Friday off 😂
Same I took Friday off myself lol
That's fine but is there will be a guide or map for quest??? Or it will be like others souls games
TeamNinja games are known to give me PTSD due to how difficult they are, but this looks very enticing lol.
I already know I'm going to get pawned by Lu Bu a hundred times lol.
It’s actually not that hard, the deflect window is pretty tame and check points are everywhere
This game looks amazing. I likely won't have time to play it for a while but I am very excited.
Feels close to Nioh 2 with slightly smoother combat
Whats the bgm coming out from 2:10?
Looks lit🤷♂️
Finished the demo numerous times. Keep playing with recruits to save money, and qi for a new game. My character should be in level 40 plus if i can use all qi that i have. And, farming 4 stars weapons and equipments too.
Only a portion carries over from demo. More then likely your levels and items will carry but not your QI. Quit trying to cheese the game already 🤡
I wonder? Are they gonna let you carry over the points or souls you earned in the demo?!
@@jeffkernen8274 Well, I got to lvl 34 before I even started playing the game cuz I saved up so much Qi. As for some, the game will be hard. Lol
Having not played Nioh, can someone please explain how the coop mode works. Can I play the entire game from start to finish in coop with a friend? Or can I only play specific sections or bosses in coop?
Do I need an ingame item to initiate coop or can I simply invite my friend whenever I want? In the former case, is it easy to get those summon items and/or do I have enough of them to easily re-invite my friend over and over again?
Based off the demo. Seems start to finish
Ok so. Its mission based so you will be able to play co op from Start to finish. In nioh there were 2 ways to start it (during a mission required easy to grind item for summon) or before starting mission you join a lobby and it cost nothing
@@User1273- So assuming coop works the same way in Wo Long as it did on Nioh, I could invite my friend before starting a mission at no cost and with no limitations? That would be great!
If i look at guan yu and zhang fei im hooing that DW 10 will be awesome looking
Played the demo ……FRESH
Sekiro vibes. Absolutely loved that game but mentally checked out hours in. This game looks awesome though!
My only gripe is that the weapons affinity system might not support how I wanna play meaning using lightning with the glaive which doesn't scale with lightning also the critical attacks are all the same so it gets stale
pretty sure you can buff a weapon with lightning in the wood magic tree. I'd assume the buff will scale off the amount of points you have in that tree or based of the wizardly stat. same goes for a rock weapon buff.
@@kooltube100 idk I looked like the weapons had set scaling like a and c scaling values I know u can buff but I'm talking about flat dmg I used a glavie the whole time and didn't even notice that it had no scaling with fire 😅 and that's what I upgraded the most but maybe different one will scale differently or maybe the blacksmith with have something
You can find glaves that give bonus lightning damage and solve that issue. Idk if you've played Nioh before but the system seem identical to it.
@@reggiemoore755 ah I get you now. yeah it seems to be like nioh with the weapon scaling. Each type just has set scaling from each stats. I think you could adjust them later in the game via remodelling tho.
I know this isn't nioh btw but most of the mechanics seem the same, so I would be surprised if it isn't similar.
Why no official VRR and 120Hz support on PS5??? Demo doesn't support High Frame Rate Mode and Variable Refresh Rates on PS5...
If you ask me, I’m going to try a hiruzen route; trying to master all 5 elements and find the perfect balance between them.
One last thing that people need to know, it runs significantly much better on console than on pc, judging by the demos -_-
What do yall think the invade feature is going to be like
For god sake it's not when the attack will hit you it's when the ennemy will begin to land the attack. You clearly can see it with the special attack there is a small bright light when you have to push the parry button, you can even see it in this video. Lot' s of people thing it's the same parrain as sekiro when in this case you have to do it just before it hit you but it's not the case in wo long, and because of that people feel that the game is far more hard than he id.
Lotta people hating already because of no stances. They seem to forget, technically, this is not Nioh 3.
They're probably hating because combat seems a bit one-note and stale. You normal attack string, you deflect, special ability here and there, and nearly every weapon feels the same.
These gives me such sekiro vibes! but with a variety of weapon and combat styles to choose! Day one purchase for me!
Yo when is the new zealand release time? just curious asking for a friend
I didn't even hear of this i just found out of it today
Loved the demo, but for whatever reason I lost all my progress when I completed it. Now gotta deal with that first boss again lol, can't wait for Friday's release!
Lol I can't beat his 2nd form.
@@MrShinTensei lol you'll beat him. His 2nd form I was able to beat after a few attempts. It was his first form that was my kryptonite for 50 attempts
@@MrShinTensei Check your weapons. They all have a percentage based stat for parrying. With some weapons it is just more difficult to parry than others.
That’s impossible…i mean its saving all the time
@@ramonholland1165 no its possible, I beat the 3rd boss and the demo ended. Than I was taken back to the main menu, I clicked continue and it brought me back to the beginning of the first level all over again. Than even went to load game and it wasn't there .
So you guys still haven't realized that this game allows you to parry ALL attacks and not just the red glowing ones?🤣🤣 Video Game Journalists, I tell you....🤦♂🤦♂
"Oh no, its Lu Bu!"
"Do NOT pursue Lu Bu!"
Is there a way to turn off voices during fight? Because its annoying
Finished the demo 3 times ! And I'm motivated asf for the official release ! HESITATION IS DEFEAT !
Edit : 2:13 That's weird. I don't remember we could choose a elemental phase (playstyle). 🤨
You can’t… he’s for some reason using the first demo as reference
In the first demo you could. Im pretty sure thats dated information in the current demo you can't which is the ine that says it carries over progress
that was in the 1st demo where i think you got like lvl 10 in that stat at the start. Now everything starts at lvl1
Yooooo! You right af! I was wondering when I saw it in the video too. I ain’t seen nothing like that in the demo. But this game’s combat is sick!
200hrs here with nioh in 2 weeks geesh i got so hooked but i was aware of wolong coming. Question are stances still featured in the game i dnt want to get spoiled
Not my cup of tea but I can see the love this game gets, I would hope for a game that's more like dark souls
Check out the new The Lords of the fallen
this is nioh 3 for me
Maybe I'm way out of the loop, but wasn't there a wu Kong game in the works based on journey to the west?
You mean black myth wukong made by Chinese studio? It's "scheduled" for summer 2024 for now
Played the demo. Really fun. I just wished there were more customizable options (hairstyles) maybe there’ll be more in the full game. I also wished our character talked. I know it’s probably supposed to be self insert, but I hate silent protagonists.
after forspoken and atomic heart, I'll take our silent protag!
Do people play games to look at their character or play the game? Who cares about hairstyles??
@@gporr7004 obviously I care because I SAID it. If people didn’t care, customization wouldn’t be a thing.
@@hua.. I don’t just mean dialogue, I wish our character actually feel interesting, instead of just nodding every time the other characters say something and just doing everything for them like a robot.

GOTY🤩👑🏆
9700K + 3080 Ti running at 4K Ultra settings and I had a pretty stable framerate throughout...only a few momentary dips below 60fps during the entire demo. This engine is really showing its age though...its not a visually impressive title at all, so I was honestly expecting even better performance than that.
The demo is capped at 60 frames. Thankfully it's not in the official game release
I already have it pre installed...Thanx game 🎮 pass 👍
Nioh 3?
I’m so happy this game is gonna be on game pass Xbox really has been hitting home with its game pass lately
They need to make games like these in every country lore.
It's Chinese-based Nioh.
If you ever played the dynasty warriors series you know this is gonna be pure gold
Not a huge fan of Tecmo games in general but this and Wild Hearts looks pretty decent. Decisions decisions.
Get this game 1st imo. Wait until they patch Wild Hearts cause performance is rough right now
@@runningtwo2818 This. Tho I've read comments from people saying the demo isn't running well on their rigs.
Yeah this plays at 60fps. Wild hearts on the other hand plays at 15 fps.
Wild hearts is a great game. Better than monster hunter imo
This game is so good. I completed the ps demo and man it felt rewarding. Wanna buy it but there's just too many games other than this one I wanna get. Maybe I'll just gamepass it, but I'd rather play this on PS. Man.
is it as difficult as fromsoftware games?
Fromsoft games are not difficult so normally I would say yes, but this is the least difficult TeamNinja game so maybe not.
So… this will be even harder than Ninja Gaiden or Nioh huh.
I'm all for character customization but there's no way European or African people would be in China during that time period let alone fighting alongside Chinese armies. The game still looks fantastic though.
I'm sure there were African and European people in China.
@@kazokadas not at that time. Just travelers and merchants but that's it.

Make sure your fortitude rank is at least as high as the boss, I fought him with a rank in the 20s and it kind of trivialized the fight.
Definitely not.

Goty ?? We see its a great game
I doubt I have the skill or patience to play this. Only Soulsborne game I’ve ever beat was Elden Ring, and since I’d consider it the easiest of all of them, especially with summons and multiplayer, I just can’t see myself getting through this.
Try the demo and see. Worst case scenario you confirm your suspicion. Best case you find out you can
@@jmadd1234567890 Yeah, tried the demo, not the game for me. I can’t even beat the demo boss. When I depleted his health I figured that was it, but no..second phase. Can’t get past that and don’t have the patience to bang my head against it for an hour. Beat the first phase after 5 tries, second phase I can’t even get him half down. So, glad there was a demo to tell me I don’t have the patience and probably not the skill for Wo Long. Too bad, I was enjoying the combat outside the boss and such, but if this is the first boss, I can’t imagine what’s past him.
I’m sure there’s plenty of people that had no problem and will call me a n00b or whatever, but it’s fine. I beat Elden Ring because I could put off boss fights until I had some levels. That’s something that’s not near as easily done in other Soulsborne games. At least nowhere near as easily as Elden Ring.
@@clonexx The second phase boss all you need to do is get him down to 50 hp and then do your special X and O / it does a cut scene and moves on
is it just me or does the hud feel very stiff or bloated?
I dont find the numbers or looks to be good looking.
I'm sure some people agree but I'm not one. I think it looks clean and very familiar to Nioh. All the info on the screen seems neccesary and useful
It’s a shame this game is attached to a notoriously bad pc port. I genuinely hope it has a great launch, I’d like to load it up day 1 and enjoy it

Nioh is soulslike. Yasuda even said they were influenced by the success of Dark Souls when they decided on its game design direction when asked in an interview with eurogamer.

Absolutely hate the morale system, so you have to wait till your half way through the level or more to use your good magic spells? Combat is fun but moves being tied to weapons and the morale system/magic system makes me not want to buy this till it's on sale. Also the flags serve no purpose except forcing exploration instead of rewarding it
the flags do serve a purpose. they not only buff your moral but if you die, the amount of moral your left with will be higher. that tied to allowing you to use your more powerful spells, I think is rewarding in itself. Though I can see where your coming from, I too would like to use my spells straight away. I'm guessing you'll be able to adjust your starting moral via Armor stats or something later.
@kooltube100 right, I think the while morale system is useless that's my point. It's basically just enemy level, it serves no purpose except to make you wait for spells / get demoted and can't use spells. Spells you have spend tons of points in to be able to use just to be unable too for most the actual map.
Nioh 3

from playing the demo, it just seems like nioh 3. seems they just renamed a lot of the mechanics + added a few, then slapped on Chinese lore. ofc that isn't a bad thing, had a blast playing the demo :)
Imo, it's actually a bit less cluttered than Nioh with all those effects and all. It's also interesting that melee and magic is combined into a single playstyle.
@@DOGEonPC oh yeah those are some decent changes. Not sure I like the spells being tied to moral though yet.

Why
you had me at souls like and bloodborne/nioh developers. gamepass subscribers have been eating GOOD lately
I played the demo. the combat mechanics are very impressive but the difficulty level is not hard as a game from Fromsoftware. The perry is very powerful, making enimes vulnerable to heavy attacks even if you are fighting with boss. Perry shouldn't give players a chance to attack enemies but it should give player to have some time regaining stance against a strong foe.
Aye this isn’t for me (the years have taken their toll on reaction times I think I’d need for this)- if it’s for you though, enjoy!
The parry window is actually more generous than that of Sekiro. But the endgame might ramp up in difficulty same as Nioh.
Co op is avaible in this game and there is no shame in asking for help, remember that :)
I hope this game has a well put together story & dialoge, and its not just some insanly repetitive strategy RPG with a mid story...... cough cough softfrom games
