See Tituss Burgess Sing 'Poor Unfortunate Souls'

- Unlike the character he plays on TV, Tituss Burgess made his mark on Broadway a long time ago. His biggest break came in 2007, when he originated the role of Sebastian in Broadway’s 'Little Mermaid'. But all the while he was playing a talking crab, Burgess had his sights set on a different role. Unfortunately, pitching the powers that be on a black gay man playing Ursula the sea witch didn’t go so well - but at least a packed audience at Burgess’s appearance at Vulture Festival Saturday night was treated to the actor’s rendition of “Poor Unfortunate Souls.” “Maybe they’ll get their act together, put me in that movie,” he said. Someone get that man a white beehive and some tentacles immediately!

I wish Disney was brave enough to let him do this in the live action movie
Ironically, 20+ years ago, people had no problem putting male characters in female costumes. Oh, how times have changed.
@@roseantigoni6709 I don't believe that. Disney, I feel, has come a long way in introducing LGBTQ and other alternative lifestyles into their movies in the last few years.
@@Elaini.Young24 If it was good enough for Shakespeare albeit for different reasons, who are we to say no. :)
Elaini Young ah yes, how many “first lgbt characters” has Disney introduced, that turn out to be a 5 second cameo that gets cut for the Chinese government? Disney doesn’t give a shit about LGBT people, they’re just queerbaiting to pretend they’re progressive.
@@Elaini.Young24 That's cause in those situations they were making fun of femininity and emasculation unfortunately.
That's ironic because Ursula was modeled after a drag queen
Midori T. Who?

Divine
divine was actually initially meant to play ursula in the film, but unfortunately she passed away before she could begin modeling and recording for her. :(
RIP Divine, iconic queen, fantastic influencer, all around talented person.
Divine!
"Do I help them? Yes, boo boo."

Omg yes. I had the same thought lol I actually laughed at risk of waking my sleeping son 😂
I was DYING at "sign the fucking scroll"!
@@kristiwinkle5686 ME TOO!!! I howled! Ursula should have been played from moment one as a manipulative, two-faced bitchy DRAG QUEEN and THIS IS IT, right here! Perfection!!!
SAME! lol!

I DIEDDDDD
I absolutely cackled!
I did this song at karaoke with a friend and I stole his "sign the fucking scroll". My friend had to stop singing to laugh
Considering Ursula was inspired by Divine, a famous drag queen, I don't see why the producers wouldn't let Tituss audition.
Frank D They were probably worried about coming across as bigoted and having the social media mob rain down on them. Most people in the mob wouldn't care that he himself wanted to be Ursula and would instead focus on the meaning they interpreted in a black gay man playing a villainous witch.
It honestly may have been a contractual/union thing. If he auditioned and they chose him, having already been in the show, I imagine it could ruffled some feathers.
Um. He never really asked them. That was never a thing. It's a comedy bit.
Frank D because he didn't have the voice?
As a director, I'll say, honestly they might have just liked who they had cast for Ursula. It might not be some big thing. They probably just like the casting they already had. For example I just finished up Little Shop of Horrors. And our Audrey 2 wanted to play Seymour. But we liked our Seymour, and he was phenomenal as Audrey 2.
" will b*tch you got to pay the toll"
" yes boo boo"
" sign the f***ing Scroll"
Truly iconic
Don't forget the so-so face lol
Also don't forget Falson Jetson now I've got her girls.
And the silent "just your voice"!!!
Doesn’t sound like a villain my ass. I’d recognize that back handed kindness anywhere. Maybe it’s because I grew up around people who could be very manipulative, were very good at playing the victim when it suited them, and had no problem helping out for a price and never let you forget that you needed their help in the first place. Standing ovation! Wonderful portrayal!
You from Minnesota?
@@atbailey7227 No. Am from the Midwest though. A lot of Mother Gothel types in my neck of the woods.
@@sarina76667 how do you recognize it my dear?
@@thelegendofthem6120 Body language. And I have ADHD. I tend to veer off into accidental tangents. Reminding me of the original conversation is one thing, but manipulative people tend to try to steer in a direction that suits them. Due to my ADHD without even trying, I tend to frustrate people into losing their nice filter during conversations. Generally, genuinely nice people get what they consider rudely blunt and then get awkward trying to correct their bluntness. Manipulative people lose their patience faster and they don’t get awkward trying to compose themselves. When people get that frustrated, I figure they’re showing their true colors. This is the kind of person they are and what they really think of me. Then it’s a matter of do I laugh and reassure them I’m not offended, or do I shut up and pay attention till they get it all off their chest.
As one who was "raised" by a handful of thpse manipulative villains this is the most perfect portrayal.
I'm in awe right now....everything is that was is insanely accurate. Every single detail added to the song just made it that much better than the original. The original is such a classic but this is 😘👌🏽
when he quietly mouthed "just your voice" i applauded on the inside (my hands are lazy)

All I wanna do is watch this video always.
OH MY GOD GARRETT WATCHES THE SAME VIDEO AS ME ((STARS THEY'RE JUST LIKE US))
Omfg Garrett I did not expect to see you here hi!!!
I need Tituss to be in every production I see EVER! He’s so magnificent.
*fat mood*
Garrett Watts omg hi king
his voice is so oddly satisfying, it’s very strained but not painful and annoying, breathy but not gross, tinny but not whiney if any of that makes sense. i just love him as a performer because of how unconventional he is but also how extremely talented he is
I'm not a vocal coach but what I hear is someone in full control of their voice.
youre right goldilocks
Broadway baby!
Totally agree! There's more to Broadway than vocal quality (which he definitely has!), but also performance! Its like the difference between the chick from Glee who did the Transexual Transylvania song vs. Tim Curry. Chick's voice was stronger, but Tim's performance is what made it work.
I understand exactly what you meant.
The Little Mermaid movies comes out this weekend and I’m still so so insanely pressed that you aren’t playing Ursula in it.
AHHHHH fr tho
Yah
fcking fair
Came here to watch this again and think the same exact thoughts
You so right! He would slay! 💕😁
He really sounds like hes trying to convince us that hes changed his ways and that hes not a villain. I love it so much!
He changed the lyrics right? Who wrote this?
@@leif1075 Howard Ashman.
Mhmm
People are saying he doesn't sound like a villian. I think he sounds like a villian who's trying to pretend they're not the bad guy until they finally get fed up and lay it all out on the table. I love it
**Edit this just popped up in my feed and I watched it again. Its May 2021, y'all blew this lil comment up lol. But I'm glad so many agree. I agree he played Ursula to T. People say well he sounds too sweet or too refined. The better to lure you in with my dear! If your goal is lure someone into doing something you want, you're gonna catch more flies with honey. The sweeter more refined the voice the more we're conditioned to trust what its saying. Especially children, which Ariel was. But if you pay attention you can tell somethings not right from the start of the song. Even with all the sweetness. He did a wonderful job in my opinion.
Quiana Henderson He doesn't match Ursula though. This is more like...if Lady Tremaine had a song.
Absolutely !!
wtf he sounds perfect as a villain. "The guys up there don't like a lot of blabber. They think a girl who gossips is a bore" I can hear him subtly manipulating Ariel into giving up her voice. A villain doesn't need to sound evil and loud and upfront, like Maleficent. Ursula at this point is still trying to say "yeah I used to be bad, but I'm actually a saint" etc etc, while manipulating Ariel into what she wants. It's perfect
Next time anyone says he doesn't sound like a villain ask them what a villain sounds like.
Yesss exactly! It mirrors his character on tv. He sounds in purposeful denial of his true villainous character.
Yes, Tituss is AMAZING, but that pianist... wow. Completely synced in with Tituss's performance.
So happy someone else has noticed it too
Thank you!!!! Does anyone know the pianist's name?
@@BlueWolf884i wanna know his name too
That’s Brian Whitted. He was music director of Chicago on bway and nat’l tour for 14 years. I’ve had the pleasure of working with him in several community theatre shows and he is AMAZING!!!
The depth of the lyrics never cease to amaze me. I mean this is from a movie that is targeted at 6 year olds, yet you have to be at least 26 to get what Ursula is really doing.
Its amazingly devious, this and "be prepared" are my top favorite villain songs cuz the lyrics are just deliciously evil and layered
Totally agree. Especially when u throw in number like "hellfire" from the hunchback of Notre dame, it's like my immature child mind never fully appreciated the depth of the lyrics and the song back then. But watching it now at 30, I love it even more
@@notoyaarthur1990 Oh my god, I just clicked on the word "more" in your post thinking that you had written more and I needed to expand it. Took me a good while to click that it didn't say "Read more" and that you were clearly finished!

incredible stage presence. The silent "just your voice" was the cherry on top of the exquisite vocals in the rest of the song
DODUCKA I also thought it was a nice subtlety. It really helps show the manipulation and vileness of the character.

yes, that was genious
When he said "bitch" and "sign the fucking scroll" guuurrrrrl!!! I barked!! 🤣
he so accurately expresses the drama, the inflactions of the voice and the personality and feeling of the song.... true master
I always thought Ursula was so clearly coded as a drag queen. Those producers are wrong, Tituss is perfectly suited for this role.
Hate to say it, but I'm pretty sure it's because a drag queen in a Disney play would be considered "too gay" by homophobic people. Disney likely feels the need to please them so as to avoid hate-driven backlash. In other words, (discreet, implicit) inspiration from a drag queen is doable but having an actual one is not. 😡
Ursula was inspired by the infamous drag queen, Divine
I wonder if the producers said no due to gender restrictions in hiring quotas. The Actors’ Equity Association states that the role must be played by a woman. Just guessing.
didderjade a drag queen is a guy in women's clothes
Taylor Richardson its 2018 all of that is bendable

Cus ursula is a woman and so is melissa, and melissa is white just like ursulas human form, have u actually even watched the movie?
@@black1cat21 considering she's purple when she's not human, colour shouldn't be an issue.
@@black1cat21 1)ursula is purple. her human form doesnt matter in the slightest. 2) ursula was designed after a drag queen. aka a man dressed as a woman. casting a white woman in the role is just taking ANOTHER role from lgbtq and colored people for no reason.
Lesley Elizabeth only her appearance was inspired by a drag queen, since she IS a woman whether in her real or human form, if a character design was inspired by a cat does that make the character a cat? Nope unless stated. And how is it taking a role from colored or lgbt ppl? Ursula was NEVER meant to be a guy dressed as a woman despite her appearance looking like one, so shes a woman regardless of how she looks, and considering the fact that the story was set in DENMARK and the time period was around at least 1840, a colored person wouldnt really be accurate to the plot
@@black1cat21 "a colored person wouldnt be accurate to the plot" oh ??? were looking for the most accurate characters in a movie with mermaids and talking fish?
I directed a youth theatre production of The Little Mermaid back in 2013, and I had a young man ask if he could audition for Ursula. I said of course, and guess what? He was my Ursula! He was one fantastic performer
That is awesome!
Hell yeah!
I would have loved to see video of his performance
Thank you. 💜
Awesome!

Welp....guess I’ve found a new obsession.
Watch Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and you’ll only be more obsessed. He is brilliant.
He’s great in Dolemite
And don't forget his endorsement for Downy Unstoppables. It seems I see that ad just about everywhere. 😅
Ursula 👏 is 👏 a 👏 DRAG 👏 QUEEN 👏 (based on Divine) I’m probably preaching to the choir on this one, but this would have been a great casting choice 😍
I told my sister that lol
EXACTLY.
They keep giving her role to flat-chested straight women. The only person who comes close to Pat is Queen Latifah. Everyone is impressed with Melissa, but that mainly because they thought she'd suck.
And Pat got most of her influence from Howard Ashman's performance... and guess what? He was gay.
Ursula is a gay man.
Right???? The fact that they refuse to have a drag queen at this point is kinda offensive. Titus would have been AMAZING. To be fair, the people who were mad about Halle Bailey would have lost their minds at him playing Ursula.
"You have your looks,
...Your so so face"😂😂
Vitani B Mamba that took me out
I think Ariel is beautiful
Much like Edna Turnblad, I think Ursula should universally be played in drag.
I would love to see that, maybe one day I would play her, I have already been Edna!
Yes.
I wouldn't say universally in drag, but there are definitely men who could kill the role.
She was inspired by a drag i think
YES!!!
His voice is so expressive and character-driven, you actually love it the meaner he gets towards Ariel.
Who remember that iconic shrimp🍤 being used as lipstick by Ursula
I think it was a sea anemone, but yes, I think about it all the time 😂
He literally took a women's song up two steps. How is he this perfect
Alexa play despacito 2 by raini Rodriguez Ursula was based on a drag queen so he fits better then anyone
@@twigwigsoso
That doesn't change the fact that he took an already perfect song and made it better and any producer that hears this should give him the fucking role asap

Musicals aren't just songs and acting, it's a whole performance and he fucking nails it aaaaarggh I love this man so fucking much
Because he’s gay. We make everything better.
Because the role of Ursula is based on the drag queen Divine and it is not meant to be a "women's" song. Also gender is a social construct in the first place.
@@danellewylder oh so any drag queen can do this good of a job? 😂

MrJreed1000 It’s a play. Hopefully you’d pay money whether it was him or not
Would you consider, oh you know, giving up a little, MINOR, thing to see him? Like, just possibly, a voice by any chance?
I understand this is played for laughs, but this rendition does a magnificent job of showing just how sinister this song is.
Can we get some sort of petition going to put this man in as Ursula??? This is THE BEST cover of Unfortunate Souls I've ever heard!!!
He is so insanely talented
I wish this guy was my aunt..
Right?!
He is my auntie...spiritually.
Yasss
why does this make so much sense
I’m hollering
I believe casting Titus as Ursula would have been in line with Howard Ashman's original sensibilities and vision. According to Little Mermaid director John Musker: "[Ashman] said he had two rules he tried to follow in the construction of some of his musicals. With songs, Never go slow, when you can go fast…The other rule was: Never go white when you can go black. Howard loved the power, emotion and expressiveness he felt so many black singers brought to the stage and writing material for them was irresistible to him." He also prioritized musical theater actors over celebrity casting.
And the fact that Ursula’s design is also inspired by black drag queens in the 80s
YES!!!! Oh, hi, Rebecca! :) Speaking of Howard Ashman...I always felt like Ursula was basically Divine, but ALSO sort of a female(?) version of Audrey 2. There are so many parallels between The Little Mermaid and Little Shop Of Horrors (I used to jokingly blend them into The Little Shop of Mermaids) -- Ashman admits it himself, especially the fact that "Somewhere That's Green" and "Part of Your World" are exactly the same song -- so it's not surprising that if you really look at Ursula, you can see the same facial expressions, sinuous movement and sneaky, "frenemy" style manipulative behaviors of Audrey the Plant. And Titus absolutely should be playing Ursula!!
Rest in Peace to Pat Carroll the original voice of Ursula.
His little talking bit at the start sounds like a villain telling their prologue/story, I love it
I have hated all of Disney’s live action movies thus far. They’re miscast, boring, and lacking of any of the magic that made the originals work. But if this man is actually casted at Ursula I’d see it at least 10 times for him alone.
I absolutely could NOT watch Beauty and the Beast with Emma Watson. Terrible.
M X I fell asleep in the theater 20 minutes in and woke up at the last scene. I never fall asleep during movies lol
The Live Ariel one was a joke. Half of it was animated. Most of the performances were OK, I just wish they would have made it an actual movie, y'know?
I agree with Burt C0caine
@@fantaoramge that wasn’t too bad. There was a Broadway Little Mermaid years ago so I think it was more inspired by that. I just saw it as a little TV special. They’re still making a live action Little Mermaid movie.
Did he just purposefully drop a 1/4 tone on "Saiiint" at 2:13 to dramatize Ursula's duplicity?!? Fucking badass.
The "just your voice" is on 10000000% on point lol.

This guy is awesome! If Billy Porter could rock being a fairy godmother then this guy could definitely make the best Ursula!
If they were in a show together I'd probably just die (of laughter & tears both)
He adds a whole other dimension to the character.
He is so perfect for this role. Ursula didn’t come across to Ariel as a villian and she was tricked. He has the vocals, the attitude, and the delicate personality that could be convincing to Ariel. We all know Ursula was inspired by Divine the famous drag queen so why not let him audition?
Melissa McCarthy could never
This December diva tituss forever ❤️
Melissa McCarthy is a decent actress. She just isn't Ursula. That, up there in the video, is perfect Ursula. Ursula is brooding, conniving, mischievous, and plotting which just doesn't describe a performance I could see Melissa McCarthy playing.
She is more the goofy sidekick kind of voice performance character.
@@ashakydd1 couldn't have said it better myself. She just doesnt suit the role.

Far superior lyrics!!!
I admit that in the past I've been a nasty
They weren't kidding when they called me, well, a witch
But you'll find that nowadays
I've mended all my ways
Repented, seen the light, and made a switch
True? Yes!
And I fortunately know a little magic
It's a talent that I always have possessed
Although lately, please don't laugh
I use it on behalf
Of the miserable, the lonely, and depressed
Pathetic
Poor, unfortunate souls
In pain
In need
This one longing to be thinner,
That one wants to get the girl
And do I help them?
Yes, indeed
Those poor, unfortunate souls
So sad
So true
They come flocking to my cauldron
Crying "spells Ursula, please!"
And do I help them?
Yes, boo-boo
Now it's happened once or twice
Someone couldn't pay the price
And I'm afraid I had to rake 'em 'cross the coals
Yes I've had the odd complaint
But on the whole I've been a saint
To those poor unfortunate souls
Oh~! Ariel!
What's it gonna be?
You wanna go up there and be with princey-boo?
Or stay down here with me?
You'll have your looks, your so-so face
And don't underestimate the importance of body language!
The men up there don't like a lot of blabber
They think a girl who gossips is a bore
Yes on land it's much preferred for ladies not to say a word
And after all dear, what is idle prattle for?
Come on, they're not all that impressed with conversation
True gentlemen avoid it when they can
But they dote and swoon and fawn
On a lady who's withdrawn
It's she who holds her tongue who gets a man
!
Come on you poor unfortunate soul
Go ahead
Make your choice
I'm a very busy woman and I haven't got all day
It won't cost much
Just your voice!
You poor unfortunate soul
It's sad but true

Tituss is a national treasure!!
All these people saying Gaga should be Ursula in the live adaptation, I urge a male in drag who is part of the LGBTQ community to play her. Ursula was inspired by the glamorous Divine herself. And Disney owe us for casting two straight actors in gay roles 😠 Support LGBTQ actors Hollywood!
Just cuz Ursula was INSPIRED by a drag queen doesn't mean ONLY drag Queens can play her, or that Disney HAS to get a drag queen to play her. Also what gay roles did disney have that they made straight actors play?
sorry but, just because Ursula was inspired by a drag queen doesn't mean she should only be played by actors of the lgbt community, disney should hire someone with the criteria of if they are talented to play ursula, if they sound like her, etc, not just because they are part of the community. Imagine that out of 15 people 5 were part of the community and someone outside it got the role cause disney thought they were more suited to play Ursula, they judge people because of their talente, those people could be from in or outside of the community. They shouldn't give someone a chance just because they are part of a community, they should give a chance to any talented individual regardless of who they are
Regain Turner YES YES YES
@@owlmycatxd4678 if a third of the actors auditioning were LGBT+ I'd be frankly amazed. In that kind of audition process it's reasonable to conclude that the decision was based on talent, but that's a far cry from what usually happens.
to say that only LGBT members should play gay characters, it's like saying that only psychopaths should play a murderer...the criterion to choose should be on their talent, not their preference, but i agree on that Hollywood, not only Disney, should diversify their portfolio in all matters of the cinema industry, acting, directing, etc.but the decisive point must always be to choose the right talent, no matter where it comes from...😊
