I didn't come here to learn how to fry summer squash...I came here to listen to your voice. I was born & raised in Tennessee...met a beautiful red head from Maine & she kidnapped me and took me to the north. LOL. Six years ago she had a severe stroke and was unresponsive for 17 minutes. She & I spent the last six years teaching her how to talk, walk & eat by herself. Every now & then, I miss home and the voices of my mother & sisters coming from the kitchen. Sometimes we have no idea what grand things we do with such little effort. Thank you much & God bless.
Yellow squash is one of my favorite veggies. I love it fried that way, or just sauteed with onions without any cornmeal! Thank you for putting God first. God bless!
My neighbor brought over three yellow squash this afternoon. Luckily I picked your video. I put the sliced squash in the bag and headed outside to work on the jeep. When I got back they were ready to fry. These were by far the best I have ever cooked. This recipe is as old as my old cast iron frying pan.I'm sure God enjoyed them through me. Blessings to you my sister in Christ.
My 16 year old grandson, who is vegan (Lord help us!) had this squash at a friend’s house and asked me to make some. I had never done squash like this so I had no clue. Thank you so much for making this video. He is a happy boy and my status as a “perfect” Grandma has been saved. LOL!
I sure hope he will outgrow it! He isn’t really vegan because I can’t cook like that for him and cook for the rest of us normally. He still eats my cornbread, creamed potatoes and a few other things that I make. But he THINKS he is “vegan.”
I love squash! And I am a mid-sixties man learning how to cook out of necessity. I have tried every squash recipe I have found to get the crispy crunch and interior flavor of the squash. Today, I happened upon your recipe, and tried it tonight. It is my go-to from now on! I am going to add some onion and garlic powder, but other than that, it doesn't need more seasonings in my opinion. I have tried all the egg wash and flour and cornmeal recommendations with little to no luck. The "leave it alone for 15 min" was the trick I needed to get what I craved. I am also going to do okra the same way. Thanks so much!
Becky, I can’t thank you enough for this quick and easy way to make squash. My husband, who wouldn’t let any squash or zucchini cross his lips, now has requested that I make this. Today I only had one squash, so I tried adding a peeled sliced cucumber to the bag with the squash and cornmeal (including the teaspoon of Splenda) and he couldn’t tell the difference - neither could I! It was just great. For those who want to try it, DO peel the cucumber first as it has a much tougher skin than squash. God Bless you and thanks for sharing all your expertise!
Been frying squash all my life, as long as you don't slice it too thin, but then, if you do, you get squash chips! We just had fried squash a couple days ago. Along with garden green beans, tomatoes with cottage cheese and fresh corn on the cob. What a meal!
She always suggest letting any moist vegetables to rest, also she suggest letting any of her fry cakes to rest(like potato or pinto beans patty/cakes) and as I found out works great. Thanks Hillbilly Kitchen
I just love your videos. They take me back to summers on the dairy farm with my grandparents. My granny is now 94 years old and still fries squash much the same as you. Thank you for keeping these old time recipes alive - and for all the helpful tips you add along the way. God bless!
@Jeff Schwender God's Word says that Jesus said "I will have mercy and not sacrifice; for I am not come to call the righteous: but sinners to repentance." !!! That's in Matt. ch. 9, and vs. 13. Besides it also says "There are none righteous, no, not one."which is in Romans 3, vs.10. It clearly instructs us sinners "Except ye repent, ye shall likewise perish." Luke 13:3 Jesus paid for every sin you have ever committed.... it was nailed to His cross! Believe and receive forgiveness .... become His child. In 2 Peter ch.3 vs.9 it does promise that the Lord is "not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance." Pray for His Truth to be revealed to your heart = and don't waste time. Turn to Him.
This is one of my favs--grew up on this! Was so happy when we had this on the table for dinner! Love how you always say to put God first, also. Love your videos--you remind me a lot of Miss Phyllis (Stokes). Both of you seem like such honest-to-goodness wonderful people. God bless and thanks for the great recipes!
Bless you. I just moved away from the south to the Midwest and have been having the worst bout of homesickness. You not only sound like home to me but cook like home. Going to make this tonight!
You've brought back some sweet childhood memories. Both of my grandmother's made this...it IS an old recipe, they were both born near the turn of the century and raised in Victorian homes. They also fried the squash with sliced okra from time to time. I suppose it depended on how much had been harvested that day. Thank you for this and for sharing your love for our Lord.
My mother used to make this, I make it and now my son does. I use cornmeal mix, or mix cornmeal and flower equal amount of each. I can never make enough if I have a group. I use a very large iron skillet to try and keep up. I've fried 4, 1 gallon Ziploc bags full when all the grandkids and everyone is going to be around. Mmm mmm good!
Okay 👌 I’m really loving this recipe. At first I couldn’t imagine the sugar in there with the cornmeal but it’s great! I’ve fixed it two days in a row for just me. You have made this old woman happy. Blessings sister.
This brings back memories. I haven't eaten fried squash in probably 50 years. Our family had a big garden every year and summer squash was one of many items that we grew. I will look for squash at the grocery tomorrow. Thanks for the recipes, videos and scriptures. God bless you.
Brings back such good memories as a kid of fresh squash from our garden that my mom would fry up as a side dish. She'd do both yellow "crooked neck" an pie pan squash. She'd also fry up eggplant the same way.
I have tried quite a few of these recipes doing all the crazy stuff and using up half my dishes lol and never even close to the way I am wanting them to turn out
I am so grateful for finding your channel. My best friend married a man from Mississippi and cooked like this, I am finally brave enough to follow suit and am loving it! We are blessed with a bounty of vegetables and I am so excited to learn these new skills. I view my "daily bread" as "manna" from heaven and am determined to be thankful for whatever Jehovah God provides. This is a cause for rejoicing.
It made me smile when you talked like those beautiful fried squash could be a side dish! I promise you that they look good enough to make a whole meal anytime!
Greetings from the Florida Panhandle better known as Lower Alabama. I LOVE fried squash. Fried eggplant is another favorite . My family is Sicilian so eggplant is a staple in most Sicilian kitchen's. We slice it thin, flour, egg wash then seasoned bread crumbs. Give it a try, it's amazing and it's best fried and remove the skin.
How about for zucchini......will this recipe work? This channel has some great simple recipes!! Your camera work is very helpful, like the viewer is right there looking over your shoulder as you go through the cooking process. Reminds me of another excellent channel awhile back on Great Depression cooking done by an elder who has since passed. Very valuable information!! So big thanks for sharing. You give a rationale about why for instance you dont need a batter because the squash itself has a kind of sap that causes the cornmeal mixture to stick if you let it sit for >15 minutes and why you should drain them on a rack and not a paper towel. These tips are important for people to understand and follow if they want a successful outcome
I haven’t seen anyone cook with the large fork in a long time. It brought me back to my childhood, I think I have one and may try to use it again soon.
Oh, I forgot...Corpusdelectable mentioned Phyllis Stokes. She just lost her husband and she is fighting cancer. I just want to ask every believe here to lift her up in prayer. She is so precious and needs as much agreement for her health as we can give her. Thanks

It's a real blessing everytime you exhort on scripture! We hope the Lord just keeps blessing and blessing and blessing your life and UA-cam channel!!!
Wow. Just like my grandmother made. I had forgotten about this. Thank you so much for the recipe and tips. I will be making these now. I love all your videos. God Bless.
Made these last night. Followed directions except to deep fry. They were delicious! Hubby LOVED them! Don't skip the 15 minute wait. That really makes the cornmeal stick and fry perfectly. Will be using this recipe and technique always.
♥️💕🌼 We do this with variety of vegetables, Potatos, eggplant, spinich leaves, capsicum and other peppers. And we use flour of cereals. Thick batter coating is used many times, to get to eat the cereals flour as well. One experimental fry is do the same thing with slice bread directly, Or fill mashed potatos (mixed with salt, spices, peas), in the bread, seal the edges of the slice bread and create sealed pockets. Then do the same thing you did in this video with a bit wet flour. Just sharing my mom's experiments 😊
There is so much good on this channel it is hard start. You do so much good in helping people provide food at a reasonable cost and effort. You capably present wisdom, including but not limited to the bible and you do it in a way that is at times humorous which helps get the message across. I believe the Holy Spirit can guide us in ALL things. This one has saved me more time and frustration already and I only saw it about 10 days ago. My mom did fried squash, mostly the white “patty pan”, we didn’t grow summer squash, we were northern Hillbillies. It was use a rolling pin to make cracker crumbs between wax paper, (they didn’t sell them in the 1950’s) slice, dip in egg, dip in crumbs and fry. Mega mess and cleanup. I love fried zucchini but don’t like the mess. I decided if it would work for summer squash it will work for zucchini. I adulterated the process a little, I like ½ cornmeal and ½ flour, sometimes a touch of garlic salt and shake the bag. I found the real secret is letting them in long enough to coat and splitting them through the bag to get coverage. I use saved bacon drippings (lard) I keep - that adds some flavor to use your line. The cleanup, throw the bag away. I like the KISS method, Keep It Simple Stupid. I want to say this to you. You are helping people through hard times when we are being harassed and put upon by many including our government that should be helping us. Our lives are being made harder by stupid people who live in gated communities, have people to serve them and are living well off a largesse of our tax money. Keep on doing what you do. I believe God is with you in it. Be like Nehemiah, do not lose heart or allow the detractors to take away your joy or zeal. God bless and my thank you. Ralph Brandt, UA-cam, “From the Fireside”
I am 68 years old and have been frying squash forever - exactly like u do - just meal but never knew the trick about letting it rest in the meal for 15 min - thank you so much. Mine always tasted fine but never fried up very pretty lol
My mother fried squash and okra like you, with just cornmeal, no egg or buttermilk or anything to “make it stick.” I could never get it to fry up like hers, so I’ve tried lots of those recipes and that wasn’t it either. I can’t wait to try yours, my mother never told me to let it sit for at least fifteen minutes, I’ll bet that makes a huge difference! Thank you for sharing this, I subscribed, too!
Lol eat it or starve...my mama didn't raise any picky eaters and it was because of the good vittles she and the good Lord graced our table with. And I lovee squash pickles, nothing like em on a big ole cheeseburger!! Summer squash done this way has always been my favorite. I now enjoy me some sauted up with zucchini and onions! Blessings to y'all!!

Thank you so much for sharing your wisdom with us! I love your recipes, some I knew, coming from a family with little means, a 20 lb bag of potatoes and 6 dozen eggs from roadside fenders fed my family many lean days! Actual had complete meals from my little homestead when I got it going. A garden, rabbits and chickens made lots of meals for us, along with trading with others, rabbit for fish or venison, eggs for peaches ect. We would pick wild mustang grapes in season and wild blackberries and wild pecan trees added to our table. We Made jelly or concentrated juice. My kids don’t remember ever eating poor! My grown daughter has a wonderful homestead in Colorado and makes everything homemade off her land. It’s a lot of hard work but it’s so rewarding. God bless you honey! 💖
This is the first time that I watched some of your older posts. The newer ones that I watch always have a scriptural message from you which I love. They are so encouraging and very timely. Love your recipes. God bless.
Just found your channel & am a new sub. I love your southern accent, such a beautiful part of the country you're from. Also really love that you put God first! The fried squash looks delicious, will definately be making it.
My mom would fry squash and it's the only way I'll eat it. This is also how she made fried green tomatoes. I bought grape seed oil tonight to try. Thank you for the tips. God first always!
That is a great way to fry squash. We sometimes double the amount in the skillet and add sliced onion. I prefer to cook in my electric fish fryer at 375 for about 4 min. Then you just lift the baskets and let them sit over the hot oil til ready to serve. Uniform done all over. I do oakra and eggplant same way. Yum Yum
😋😋 This recipe looks awesome, as usual! I grew up with my family having a garden and my mom used to fry squash and make wonderful squash casserole! I love your recipe with just the corn meal... because it is no mess, you don't have all the bowls of Buttermilk Etc. Wonderful job! Cannot wait to try this.
I have just recently found you on UA-cam and I love your videos! This is how we like to eat here in Alabama too. Fried squash is my all time favorite summer vegetable. I made your fried green tomatoes recently and they were awesome! Keep the videos coming and keep giving God the glory!

Try a little bit of buttermilk to dampen the squash then cornmeal mix with a scoot of self rising flour.
Also add a little cornstarch. It will male it crisper

We do this with variety of vegetables, Potatos, eggplant, spinich leaves, capsicum and other peppers.
Grandma used to make this for me back on the farm. I made some yesterday brought me back thanks so much
Thank you for the fifteen minute tip! Old squash fryer, never too old to learn.
Same here
There is so much good on this channel it is hard start.

Thank you 😊 God Bless You!
I am 68 years old and have been frying squash forever - exactly like u do - just meal but never knew the trick about letting it rest in the meal for 15 min - thank you so much. Mine always tasted fine but never fried up very pretty lol
Love fried squash thank you for sharing
My mother fried squash and okra like you, with just cornmeal, no egg or buttermilk or anything to “make it stick.” I could never get it to fry up like hers, so I’ve tried lots of those recipes and that wasn’t it either. I can’t wait to try yours, my mother never told me to let it sit for at least fifteen minutes, I’ll bet that makes a huge difference! Thank you for sharing this, I subscribed, too!
You reminded me of this recipe, now it's become a family favorite.. Thank you for this great video!
I make my Squash this way. It's very good. I really like that you always remind everyone to always put GOD first.

I'll be floating in the sky.😋 Love this lady. Hickory boy here raised up on the most delectable of Southern Soul Cuisine. Time to hit the market and put the cast-iron skillet to good use.👨🍳

That's exactly how I fix mine! And I fry one layer at a time also. But.... I use a cast iron skillet.
This is the first time that I watched some of your older posts. The newer ones that I watch always have a scriptural message from you which I love. They are so encouraging and very timely. Love your recipes. God bless.

My mom would fry squash and it's the only way I'll eat it. This is also how she made fried green tomatoes. I bought grape seed oil tonight to try. Thank you for the tips. God first always!
Thats exactly the way my Momma taught me how to fry squash including a little suger. Of course i am a Tennessee Blue Ridge Mountain hillbilly.
I use a little brown sugar in mine.
Me too N.C. gal here👣💙
Thank you for the tip.i didn't know about sugar.i'm going to try that..thank you
That is a great way to fry squash.
Yum Yum
@@garylittle7960 thanks for sharing that! Will try as soon as my sqwash are ready!!
My mom made this regularly during the summer with the squash she grew. So good...Thanks for this!
You nailed it on this squash. Coating stays on better than any recipe I have tried. Delicious!
