      My grandmother from Italy used to make fried zucchini all the time, especially in the summer. Really good stuff!!

    My mama’s side of the family used cornmeal for a coating. Dad’s side used flour and fried the squash with onions. I never took sides. I love both!😋

      Fried yellow squash is a summer favorite of my family❣️ We cut it round & we batter the squash in meal & small amount of flour salt & pepper & fry until brown on both sides❣️🥰 Sometimes I fry vidalia onions with my squash. My daughter prefers it without onions ❣️🥰 I LOVE fried fat back fried silver queen corn & sliced garden ripe tomato onions & cucumber salad & skillet of hot buttered cornbread❣️❤️🥰 BEST Supper EVER❣️🥰

      I cut batter & fry my squash just like you do❣️ Try & turn it only 1 time. I do fried okra & fried green tomatoes the same❣️😋🥰

    I had fried squash all my life. I'm 81 years.. I like it cooked both ways.

    So many wonderful days gone by. This brings back so many memories of grandma at the old wood stove. In her old apron she didn't have much just old miss matched dishes and stuff. But her dinners were so special. Cooked with love. Thank you for keeping these days alive 🙏

    I went through a phase a few years ago of frying whatever vegetable we had on hand. We found a lot of things we liked that way.

      Lordy be how I miss my dear Mom. Mom would always make me fried green tomatoes. Mom passed away in 1998 she was a country girl and man those brown beans, wilted lettuce, and squirrel gravy just to mention a few and the fried green tomatoes. God bless you Moma.

    Love fried squash. My husband and I love meatless meals during the summer months. A plate of squash, cabbage, corn, cornbread, green beans is so good. My mom and grandma would fry out side meat or fatback to add to the meal.

    I live in eastern N.C. Fried squash has always been one my favourites. I picked some squash out of the garden today and fried them. The smells in the kitchen brings back so many memories ❤❤

    My dad loved fried squash more than anything and we always had a garden so we had it often. Mom did the medallions and the old man would eat them about as fast as she'd get them out of the pan. I love them too and make my own often. Mom just used cornmeal to bread hers but I like using just plain ole flour with some pepper and garlic powder. I salt them to taste at the table.

    Being of Middle Eastern ancestry, most of the meals Mom made had that influence. Squash was mostly made stuffed with lamb and rice, dried mint, and boiled with crushed tomatoes. It's delicious, but when I tried fried squash some time in my 30's, I loved it!
    I use corn meal with not liquid, just as you did, and now that I saw this, I need to make it tomorrow.

    We had fried squash fried okra and fried green tomatoes. I could make a whole meal out of those three things.

    As a kid I NEVER had squash of any kind because my mother didn't like squash. I married a man who liked roasted squash and I began to experiment and "discovered" fried squash on my own. LOVE it!

    I could eat fried squash every day. I grow it in my organic garden here in CA. I make mine exactly like you do yours except I make it in a non stick skillet. I am going to try slicing it the way your Pap did. My granny had the best garden in Kentucky and my favorite memory is just going to the garden with her and picking whatever was ready to harvest and use it make our meals for the day.

    My Momma cuts them long ways for frying that way too. I remember not too long ago sitting up and talking for hours with Momma over a plate full. We ate them all and talked so long we wanted more! So we had another plate full!

    In eastern NC we cut up yellow squash and sweet onions (with salt, pepper, and olive oil), then bake for a few hours until the liquid is baked out. So very good!

      I'm in Eastern NC also... we cook squash with onions, fried meat grease, salt, pepper, and a little sugar. On top of the stove. And cook until all the water is cooked out and the squash/ onions are golden brown. Takes about two hours.

      This is the only way I like squash-also from down east! My father loved the breaded and fried and I would cook it for him and I used flour with a little corn meal mixed in for breader. Hands down the steam fried with onions is the best!

    We would eat fried squash when I was little. I haven’t made it in years. Dad liked to grow yellow crookneck and green zucchini. I prefer the zucchini. Unfortunately my husband and kids aren’t big summer squash fans unless it’s in the form of zucchini bread. I will have to fry up some just for myself soon.

      Have you tried making zucchini noodles? It’s the only way I can get the ‘others’ in my family to eat squash.

      I find it has a lot to do with how thick I cut them, how long I cook them (not very) and most of all what sauce I put on them. So far homemade teriyaki seems to be the best!

    Never had squash until my teens. Instant favorite of mine. My Aunt taught me how to fix it in the Virginia Appalachians. I adore those Mountains.

    My kin was from the Appalachian mountains and we never ate our squash battered. Just sauteed squash, zucchini and onion in real butter. However, we did batter our fried green tomatoes. We called the last meal of the day, supper, not dinner.

    We're originally from WV and my mom always fried us what we just called summer squash. I think some people call it "patty pan" squash. I'm so glad you reminded me of it. Putting it on my shopping list right now :)

    About the only way I really like squash is fried. You mentioned the moisture of okra. Most don't know that okra is related to hibiscus and mallow. Marshmallow was originally made from the roots of the mallow plant that grew in the marsh, mixed with honey, in ancient Egyptian times.

    I never thought to cut the squash in bigger pieces like that and I love the idea. So we always had medallion cuts in my Kentucky family and we only used corn meal. I will definitely try the half flower and half corn meal.

      Wanda-I wouldn't have thought of it if I hadn't seen Pap do it 😀 I use 3/4 cup cornmeal and 1/4 cup flour along with salt and pepper to taste.

    Now you're taking me back, pan fried squash, was a common side to a meal, as was pan fried cabbage and corn with pork chops.

    Getting ready to fry squash myself! I love fried squash, fresh corn, fresh tomatoes, fresh cucumber and onions in vinegar and sugar water, pinto beans and cornbread. That is the perfect summer meal here in South Central Kentucky. Enjoy you and your girls videos. Feels like watching family!

    This is my absolute favorite dish in the summer! Not to pat myself on the back, but I have gotten pretty good at making fried squash. My Mama has taught me right.

    I’m Italian and we always eat all kinds of squash (zucchini, etc) the same way you do-it’s excellent! Another thing I do sometimes I make a garlic, Parmesan cream sauce to pour over it-like an Alfredo sauce. Give it a try!

    We have SO much yellow squash from our garden right now. I cut it into rounds and fry it in a cast iron skillet just like you do. I do dip it in buttermilk before dredging in cornmeal and flour. It gives it just a tiny hint of tanginess. If I don't have buttermilk, I skip that step. Enjoyed the video. TFS. ~ Betty

    With eight hungry mouths to feed Mommy was forced to use the dump method. She even had to skip the breading. I actually prefer it that way and have tried to replicate it without success. Maybe a mother's love somehow gets infused into the food she makes. Love tastes goood!!!!!!

      That reminded me of when a friend and I were living in the woods making our living cutting firewood. A friend of ours from the city came to visit, he was a gourmet chef by trade. The first breakfast he offered to cook and started cutting little slices of potato and daintily placing them in the pan. We told him we were hungry working men and weren't worried about presentation, we just wanted a big pile of fried taters. So we showed him how to cut up a bunch of potatoes and tossed them all in a hot cast iron pan at once. After he tasted the results he agreed that was a better way to do it.

      Love does taste good! When my daughter fixes me coffee or a snack, she presents it saying "I made it with schlove Mom"....and its wonderful!

      Sure does; and mom did the dump method too, with onion, salt, black pepper, hot grease, and sprinkled with flour after adding to skillet. Crusty if fried quick and with very little turning. She fried most veggies the same, including green tomatoes. Fried potatoes but without the flour. Good cookin'.

    My Pop put flour and cornmeal in paper sack and added the squash and shook the bag and fried it up.( I still do my okra this way) It was always delicious. My daughter and I eat yellow squash ALL the time just for lunch. I just sautee it in a little butter or oil with pepper until brown.Delicious everytime! This year am growing Cube of Butter variety but I still love crook neck. Its what I grew up on.

    We dip our in ranch. I prefer this 10-1 over fried green tomatoes. We always fried the first run of squash we got from the garden. That smell when they’re cooking is just awesome.😊

    Fried squash has been one of my favorites ever since I was a kid. I love that we can get squash year round and can enjoy it anytime you want. I use a 2 1/2 quart Tupperware to dredge the medallions... putting 3 or 4 in at a time... giving it a shake... then the next 3 or 4. I think it goes pretty fast and neatly. One of my favorite vegetables.

    I grew up with the individual pieces fried one at a time. When my chidren were old enough to eat squash, I would have our two kids and my husband standing over me eating squash as fast as it came out of the pan. The squash rarely made it to the table with the rest of the meal. I'm growing squash and zucchini this year and I can hardly wait to fry up some. I'm widowed and alone now with my kids living an hour away, so it won't be nearly as much fun since there will be no one to stand over me while I'm frying. Goodness, I'm going to have fried squash, sliced tomatoes, fresh green beans, corn on the cob and hot cornbread. Wish you and I could sit down and enjoy it together. Diane in NC

    I'm looking forward to frying squash from our garden. We're in Alaska, so it'll be a bit, but I do love fried squash. I did not grow up with my family frying vegetables. Mostly boiling, lol. My Mom now does all manner of vegetable prepping and cooking. We learn and share with each other. Sometimes together, which is nice.

    My mother did not start frying squash like you have here until later in life. The way she cooked squash was to put oil in a pan, slice the squash as you have and just put it in the pan with a small chopped onion. She scrambled it and let it cook until it was brown. I cook mine this way now. It is so good.

    Momma would slice the squash in medallions and slice onions and roll them all in corn meal. Put it all in the skillet together to fry. She would turn the concoction with a big spatula.. After both sides of the whole batch had lightly browned, she would serve the delecious mess. It was so good. My sister and I make it often in the summer..

    Try a deep fryer. It's like green eggs and ham---you might like it. It's thermostatically controlled and there's so much heat in the oil that temperature is fairly steady... More importantly, if you're frying chicken, you get 7 minutes to hustle around in the kitchen each time your drop the basket.

    My husband just loved yellow summer squash. We had never had it until we grew it in our own garden. Our parents both had gardens but only grew staples like potatoes, green beans, tomatoes to can. I did do an egg wash with flour and fried up slices. I called it golden dollars. We both loved it so it was a big batch. Good memories.

    Yes to fried squash! I like using panko breadcrumbs and I sometimes add parmesan cheese. When I was little, my mom would boil and mash squash with a little butter and cream. She also would saute sliced squash with onions, peppers and tomatoes. Tfs your recipe. Looks delicious! 💗

    When I was comin up my momma seldom put any breading on her squash. But she was from New Zealand and I don't think she was used to the way most folks cook. I have always breaded and fried mine similar to yours and that's the way I like it best.

    I grew up on the scramble. Everything else was the same. Squash are so good that they don't need much seasoning.

    If I make the main dish in the oven I do the squash on a cookie sheet there. If the main dish is done on the stove I fry it like you did ... and sometimes don't even flour it. However I do it, squash is easy to prepare, picks up an improved flavor (my opinion) and quickly gives you a great side dish.
    I like the fried green tomatoes and fried eggplant ideas too.

    I can't imagine anyone not having had fried squash. Growing up and even now, I could make a meal off of fried squash and maybe some fried onions if I don't have spring onions.

    I like fried squash. I grew up in S. Vermont. We had a huge garden every year. We were also blessed to have a Rhubarb patch, raspberry patch, apple trees, pear trees, etc.. My mother canned, froze, pickled anything and everything, she could. I think she put up about 900 to 1,200 jars a year. Nothing like fresh food!

    My mom “scrambled” the circular pieces. Squash was a staple at our house growing up.
    My husband’s mom fried the pieces individually and that’s how I cook squash now.
    One cannot eat just one piece if there are several on the plate. They make a yummy snack also.

    I started deep frying yellow squash, green zucchini, and fried green tomatoes; bag-shake with a cornmeal/flour blend, or flour/cornstarch blend. Chunk them up; add a splash of buttermilk to make the coating stick and deep fry batches at 360 degrees. Salt and pepper after removing while still hot. I add a dusting of Chipotle powder for kick. A lot faster than individual frying. Light as a feather and crispy, too.

    I'm sure I'd love it but as a 61yr old southerner I've never had fried yellow squash! My dad didn't care for much of anything with breading or batter coating so other than fried seafood we didn't have much of that since mama cooked to suit him...they were very old school lol

    Never had squash, But I finally had zucchini many years ago, and loved it so much, my biggest regret is not trying it sooner. There is so many foods... vegetables mainly that i would not try that I wish I had.

      @@CelebratingAppalachia I am very picky, and yet, simple. When I enjoy something, and someone wants to cook it for me, its so easy I hope they aren't so overworked and hate doing it. Me personally, will go out of my way for someone, no matter if I don't like the smell of something cooking, would happily make it for them.
      When a video posts, which I look for every time I'm online, I click right away, and "LIKE" because I know it's going to be awesome!!!!

    Love fried squash ! 😋 when I was a child we didn't have meat every nite especially in summer, we ate from the garden , a mess of fresh green beans cooked with new potatoes, fried squash sliced tomatoes, green onions and a pan of cornbread that was supper 😋

    Oooooo…I love me some fried (crispy) squash! Cornmeal makes the crispy crispier! My wife adds a little cornstarch too. But I can get completely goofy over some fried squash! Or okra!

    Yes, I grew up with fried squash. I also fry cucumber. My preference with cukes is to use Zatarain’s fish fry.

    Mama would fry it individually, and it seemed to take forever frying those little rounds. My mother-in-law made the scramble, but it was never as good as fried individually.

    My mother would cook fried squash just like you do. She would get so mad at my brother and me because we could eat it faster than she could fry the squash.

    I love fried squash and I do it the same way. My mom always did the scramble. I think it was the fastest way to get it in the table for us all. My husband is from the North and had never had fried squash. He likes it now though, I knew he would see it my way 😉🤭.

    It's interesting that the two methods you mentioned are the same exact thing here and you're likely 1,000 miles from here.
    I've had the sauteed version using water instead of oil and a small onion and some okra mixed into it . Of course we've had the fried method just as much if not more, it's always a crowd favorite : )
    Pretty interesting how thing's are different but also the same here.

    We love fried squash even squash casserole. My daddy was a Baptist preacher who didn’t like fried chicken but he did like fried squash so that’s what we ate.

    If you put a couple tablespoons of cornstarch in with your dry mixture, it makes it so much more crispy. It actually crunches when you bite into it and chew it. Someone gave me this tip last summer and I've used it ever since. I'll never fry it without it again. I love fried squash. Well, I love it any way you can cook it!

    This a daily meal when family visited for two weeks straight and after, I was hoping you'd upload maybe you can tell us some of those "stories" of the mountains " you know only told around harvest time when the sun goes dark there is a filmmaker that is chasing that inverted saucer that ones throw across the room. as that credible pilot coined before that one so-called crashed in 1947

    My mom never made fried squash, but she did make fried zucchini - she'd cut it in quarters, lengthwise and coat the long "wedges" in the type of flour you use. Sometimes she'd put some paprika in the flour. We all loved it.

    I've lived in the deep south my whole life and never fried a squash. All the ones I grow go in beef and veggie soup or in simple stir fry. Sometimes grilled. I can't stand the yellow squash and onion mash some people prepare. I like my squash identifiable. Or as Grandma called it, Squarsh. Might have to try frying it now.
