- Good afternoon, everyone! Welcome back to WoW Rocks, where today I am covering the geology of Un'Goro Crater, a jungle paradise filled with danger and exotic creatures. What will we uncover within the Crater? :)

Fire Plume Ridge being a great vantage point is actually referenced in the War of the Shifting Sands lore.
Upon being forced to retreat from Silithus, Fandral Staghelm spent many nights on the top of Fire Plume Ridge, scanning the horizon for the silithid and their qiraji masters.
They would eventually be pushed back all the way to northern Tanaris.

Un'Goro being a dormant supervolcano is a great idea, honestly. I guess the explanation for Un'Goro and Scholazar being similar might be that the Titans looked for volcanic hotspots to fuel their terraforming experiments. How, exactly? Dunno, it's titan or elemental magic or something, most probably, at least partially.

Back in Vanilla the voyage was as important as the endgame, so leveling was a long and complicated process; which meant that you had to visit many places that, later, with the expansions and the boost in XP gained, you could gladly skip. However I would always come to Un'goro because I love the area, and you had the sensation of being alone in front of such majestic nature. You just added an important piece of the puzzle with the geologic viewpoint, something I didn't even dare to suspect. I know nothing about geology, maybe that's one of the reasons why I absolutely love the WoW Rocks series. Thanks Jedi, keep it coming! 😁

@@Jediwarlock where I say "hey nice hot springs, OK what to do next (presses L)", you say "hey there's hot springs.. hmm.. I wonder what's underneath". You, with your knowledge, have been able to shed light upon a deeper design from blizzard, making the whole thing a lot more intriguing; the Wow Rocks series has already revealed many design treasures which most of us have dismissed as cute scenery additions, despite the obvious associations as between Un'goro and Sholazar; OK it's an imaginary world, but hypotheses about the past, how it might have been, and how it came to be, are so freaking fascinating that I really count the minutes till the next WoW Rocks episode! As you can see, no pressure.. hahahahaha JK
Cool video. I always liked this zone. Sometimes while questing, I wondered if there is any real life logic to the quest "Finding the Source" and the thermometer that measures temperature in fictional degrees Kraklenheit. You need to find the hottest spot in Un'Goro Crater (Fire Plume Ridge). You can measure different degrees, from 40 to 428,000 Kraklenheit. I think it would be interesting to make a comparison to real life lava and different ways we measure temperature. Keep up the good work.

Actuay Un'goro crater, is a natural reseve, and is not influenced by the titans, but watched over and preserved. Un'goro is where many of the most old, native species of Azeroth can be found, and according to wow lore, is the zone the titans based the Emeral Dream on originaly. The Emeral Dream is like a blue print for the original state of the planet before all the human, and other civilizations infuence.
Similar to Un'goro, Sholazar is a natural reserve, hence the primordial protodrakes, etc. These are zones that the titans wanted to preserve in their original, untainted, state. And to whats under the crater in Sholazar, is a titan's vault, similar to that in which we find the Lightsworn Seeker, which is a creature created by the titans to watch over certain aspects of their work on the planet. So similar to that, the vault under Sholazar should contain one, or several, creations of the titans we haven't yet found anywhere else.

As soon as you started talking about volcanic activity I knew you were gonna bring up Yellowstone! Un'goro is a super volcano? That might explain why the Titans were so interested.

This is also where the Earthmother ripped out one of her eyes, the other being sholazar, casting anshe and musha out into their present day orbits.

Hi Jedi!
Any thoughts on when the supervolcano erupted, or what kinds of effects it had on the surrounding landscape? A volcano large enough to leave a whole zone as its caldera must have been pretty cataclysmic for the world.
I am thinking it must have been very long ago (before recorded WoW history 16,000 years Before the Dark Portal) since the life forms here are very primitive and are "untouched" from the early days of Azeroth. Somebody in the comments was theorizing this could have once been Ragnaros' original domain before the Titans imprisoned the elementals which I think is a great idea... maybe the eruption happened right before Ragnaros was beaten? :D it's fun to think about!

Dunno if you're a geologist yourself or a geology-entheusiast, but if you ever want some help with pretty in-depth geological interpretations (such as can be made within this silly and fantastical game we like), drop me a message! I played the game pretty avidly up through about mid Cata, and I also have an MS in geology and work as a geologist now. In grad school I actually did quite a bit of fieldwork on volcanic systems, including calderas like Yellowstone, Valles (which is quite a dead ringer for ungoro, often referenced as the archetypal 'caldera' because of how young and well-preserved it is), Platoro caldera, western Nevada, etc. Plenty of experience with sedimentary rocks and basins/depositional settings (currently work in oil and gas exploration), and surface geomorphology.

Given my vocation and training, while I'm running around WoW I cant help but idly speculate about geology, and invent geologic histories and explanations for areas, even if it is a bit silly; and blizzard, well, obviously wasnt designing things with geology in mind for pretty understandable reasons, haha.
