The multifamily housing developments taking place in Jack’s Hill, St Andrew, have been flagged as “potentially problematic” by Professor Simon Mitchell, the country’s foremost geologist.
Mitchell’s position follows concerns raised by residents of the upscale community.

Many thanks for that long interview with Simon. The guy is a star. Unfortunately, he's probably wasting his time, and the idiots behind the development will forge on anyway.

It does not take a genius to see that this was a disaster waiting to happen. The experts also warned about building high rise buildings in Kingston with underground garages. Were they listened to??? Sadly some people see constuctive criticism or advice as bad mouthing. Oh dear, hard ears J's.

  • @iceman4660

This is all described in Building 101. Sadly JA officials fail to punish anybody, other than the 'little man', for any breaches.
To my simple mind if someone starts work that hasn't been approved then it should be immediately denied and the developer fined heavily.
This blatant disregard for building regulations is rampant in Jamaica and probably explains much of the flooding we see around the country.

It’s time for local and national government to use common sense. For too long in Jamaica, there has been development of houses and roads on unstable land masses like this in the video, and no engineering study done prior. Billions is spent each year constructing roads with cheap limestone material, only to see them deteriorate immediately after the first rainfall.
We need to take common sense to higher places.

The same thought came to me, and many of these retaining walls have been allowed to fall into disrepair. Countless research analyses exist on the geology of Jamaica, but nobody takes the time to review them. It has become only about making money!

Learnt a lot here. I hope all developers and prospective developers are watching this to make geological analysis a part of their project when doing greenfield projects.

Most naturally, it's a disaster waiting to happen. What's new in Ja? Trying to become first world country and can't even control crime. Inadequate water supply. Inadequate electricity. Bad roads that can't keep up with the levels of traffic. People living in fear. Jamaica is not ready for underground parking because when you exit your vehicle you should have immediate access to elevators that will take you to the floor you need to go. Elevators will never be able to function optimally because of unreliable electricity....the list goes on and on.

@@elizabethhall1527 Ecclesiastes 7:13-18 Consider the work of God: for who can make that straight, which he hath made crooked?
In the day of prosperity be joyful, but in the day of adversity consider: God also hath set the one over against the other, to the end that man should find nothing after him.
All things have I seen in the days of my vanity: there is a just man that perisheth in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man that prolongeth his life in his wickedness.
Be not righteous over much; neither make thyself over wise: why shouldest thou destroy thyself?
Be not over much wicked, neither be thou foolish: why shouldest thou die before thy time?
It is good that thou shouldest take hold of this; yea, also from this withdraw not thine hand: for he that feareth God shall come forth of them all.
