14. Diamond DA-62: Ideal Family twin Cruiser. Flight review

  • Another great video from the Diamond Aircraft Factory and a New Flight Review of Unique Family of Diamond Aircraft. This time in my review, it's the Diamond DA62 aircraft. It is the flagship aircraft in the entire Diamond aircraft lineup, the most luxurious, and the most spacious. It can accommodate up to 7 people in a sufficiently spacious and comfortable cabin, flying over 1000 miles at a speed of 170 knots, making it an ideal family cruiser.
Personally, I was impressed by the aircraft's performance with one engine shut down. Yes, Martin and I deliberately shut down one engine in mid-air and performed various maneuvers to test the aircraft's stability and ease of control with a single engine. I can say that it was an excellent exercise, and the DA-62 handled it brilliantly.
But as always, there's a fly in the ointment, and in the case of the Diamond DA-62, it's definitely the price. Currently, even a used aircraft can be found on Controller.com for... $1.5 million! A new aircraft in Europe in the base configuration cost €1.45 million in 2022, and it's quite possible that the price in the United States is significantly higher in 2023. Check with local dealers. What can I say? For this amount, you can buy an excellent used turboprop or even a small business jet. However, operating costs will be significantly higher. The choice is yours!
By the way, the DA-62 has EASA and FAA type certificates, making it very convenient for use in the United States.

About the wingtips (23:20 question), they always curve in the direction of lift with the objective to reduce wing-tip vortices and induced drag. They point downwards on the T tail because that's the direction of the lift there, as it pushes the tail down to raise the nose since the CG is slightly ahead of the CP for several stability reasons.
And, of course, they point downwards to make this the best looking plane out there!
Big Diamond fan here, looking forward for my special gift at Oshkosh haha
Great video, by the way, thanks for the content, keep it up! Cheers from Brazil!

Hey sir, you asked a really good question.
I think the answer of why the tips of the main wing curve upwards while the tips of the horizontal stabilizer curve downwards on a T - tail airplane particularly this one has to do with the T - tail's natural performance during a stall as a result of its design.
The T - tail's design creates a vulnerability to disrupt airflow over the horizontal stabilizer if the aircraft archives a high angle of attack.
As we know, the main wing does develop wind vortices as it cuts through the air. When these vortices are developed at a high angle of attack, they may flow over the horizontal stabilizer and elevator hence reducing or completely nullifying pitch authority.
Different manufacturers have different ways of dealing with this challenge.
Some incorporate a stick shaker to alert the pilot well before the challenge presents itself and others incorporate automatic correction by the flight control software especially in airliners where the computer moves the flight control surfaces as it deems necessary to prevent the problem from occuring.
Diamond Aircraft's solution seems to be one of the best and cost effective in general aviation.
I think they curved the horizontal stabilizer down to prevent a situation where vortices from the main wing completely nullify pitch authority if a fully developed stall occurs.
In this case there will still be some elevator authority which will enable the pilot to push the stick forward (lower the nose of the airplane) and recover from the stall by reducing the angle of attack.
Also, I think they curved the main wings of the airplane upwards to maximize the chance that the vortices developed by the main wings will pass over the horizontal stabilizer hence ensuring that the pilot always has some sort of pitch authority during a fully developed stall.
I am not an engineer so maybe I am wrong but I hope to become a pilot one day through sky eagle aviation academy.
Feel free to let me know if I am correct. Looking forward to your response.

Another reason could be just to generate more lift, achieve more stability in flight and increase precision of elevator movements.

You are a little bit wrong:
The wing tip vorteces narrow in separation by the factor π/4 , so they will not be near the horizontal stabilizer tips.
As an aerodynamicist I would put that configuration into a windtunnel, in Emmen and observe the difference between the bends down, as shown, up , or with none at all.
No speculation, just real world data.
The whole T tail I would put into a low pressure, high speed wind tunnel and look for flutter .
      Why?
Vne is the indicated never to exceed speed, with some margin.
At altitude the true airspeed, active for flutter is much higher than Vne,
At 33000 feet TAS is 1.73 times the IAS, at IAS of 173 knots the true airspeed is 300 knots, where the T tail will have separated for sure.
The density up there is ⅓ sea level density, and the RDR is √3
      TAS = RDR × IAS
      RDR root density ratio
      at 12000 feet = 1.200
Learn this early in your career.
Flutter is no Joke, every airfoil has Strouhal numer, Ns
      The flutter frequency is
      Ns × TAS/chord

Under normal flying conditions, the tail section (horizontal stabilizer) of a T-tail is out of the disturbed airflow behind the main wings and fuselage, this allows for a more consistent elevator response.
If the t-tail is level (without an anhedral design), then in sideslips you get a pronounced rolling moment imposed onto the fin by the tail, which has to be borne in addition to the direct fin sideload due to sideslip. By incorporating an anhedral design (the down slope of the t-tail) this rolling movement is reduced a little making the aircraft more stable at lower speeds as well. T-tails can reduce the loads on the fin of the aircraft.
I am doing my ground school studies by myself in the hope to become a pilot one day. Please do guide me if my answer is not correct. I will highly appreciate your guidance. I have never flown an aircraft, but my love for general aviation keeps me in search of whatever I can learn. Reason for the inverted wing tips on the tail is because the tail is an inverted wing designed to provide downforce. This provides a aft downward moment about the center of lift to oppose the forward downward moment of the CG about the center of lift.

this is the same. You using Jet-A at airport, not Diesel from gas station.

    • @Postelnikov
      @Postelnikov Рік тому +1

You can use both. But in real live it is mostly Jet-A1 (here in Europe) what you get in airport. Jet A1 (and Jet A) has much lower freezing temperatures (-47 Celsius for Jet-A1 and a little higher for Jet-A) compared to Diesel (-5 Celsius). This fuel you can get anywhere in the world (if you compare it to Avgas, which is sometimes harder to get in Europe and other countries except US). The only case I can imagine why to use Diesel is if there is no fuel in airport, so you will use car diesel. Same as with Mogas (like rotax engines) I would be more afraid to use gas station fuel compared to what they have in airport. So why not use Jet-A1 only?

  • @TherealAsanD

My guess to the question is that the rear wing provide some balance to the weight distribution. So the same benefits the main wings get to provide lift up, the rear elevators get to provide force down.

Beautiful toy❤. If simply it cud also be VTOL aircraft. If wing can’t rotate with engine is it possible to use an output from the back of the engine to rotate a fan that’ll create an up thrust when the main blades will rotate on itself for reversing the engine while landing? A better option as It cud travel longer distances than a flying car.

It seems like a very well made plane except for one critical problem. It's a heavy plane that despite quite high price is slow.
I understand why they made diesel engines for jetA it just got very heavy. What they should do is make small turbofan jet engines for a 4 seater plane. Not a 1600kg plane but a 300kg plane. Because 300kg is plenty strength to carry 4 people. And then the speed would be double and the cost much less.
Because it is heavy the wingspan is 15meters which means greater hangar costs, possibly a lot greater cost.

Wonderful redundancy: Cruising from Iceland towards Labrador the winds are stronger than expected by the forecast , the solution is divert to the north which allows to reach the destination with adequate reserves, now the gear hydraulic 5606 leaks and the gear/air brake drops to the safe gear down position , a good redundancy, which guarantees that the efficient airbrake will slow me down to make a guaranteed water landing after sqwaking 7700 and pushed ident, the response: cleared to land any runway ,( 45 miles off shore) say position, answer : glu glump.
But I like it: the low engine time logged, will remain low for the next century.

Customer support has been horrendous at DA. Currently fly a 62. Gearbox failure at 20 hours on a new engine. Now both engines need to be replaced at 11m since new w/ 220h on them due to aluminum found in oil analysis. DA wants the owner to pay a pro-rated fee for new engines, on a plane w/ a full warranty less than 1 year out of the shop!

Потому что крыло создает положительную подъемную силу и переток воздуха с нижней поверхности на верхнюю, а стабилизатор создает отрицательную подъемную силу, и там уже переток идет с верхней поверхности на нижнюю.

An auto off manual transfer or full bypass, dual down and locks, 2 tanks of O2 31k to 15k or a pressurized fuselage, with an apu, a pressurized refuel hose might be adept. Usable, leading edge 13th stage bleed air to draw on the right full feather 1 or 2 in flight air restart, deice ring, hi amps put a large li-battery 900$ pump, gucci bag, airworthiness lithium ion battery (current design lives 8 minutes), this aircraft loves Hawaii or Arizona. 5-15% dithering. Fuel could be designed ti counter feed (back channel overflow to the opposing engine.) ADS-B. And dual cam design latches for the hatches pressurized cabin, 30 minutes to 1 hour, Fly by wire.

23:25 The question to all subscribers: The wingtips curve up, but the horizontal stabilizer (T-tail) tips go down… Why?
Answer: The wingtip design enhances the aerodynamic properties of airflow about the wing, especially in utilizing what are known as “wingtip vortices” as the plane produces lift.
The horizontal stabilizer design assists in taking advantage of those same aerodynamic properties. But, because the T-tail is at the aft of the wings, it is constantly pulling the back of the aircraft DOWN. Thus, a reverse wing or anti-wing is utilized, commonly thought of as “an upside down wing.”
This necessity for the nose to be raised by the horizontal stabilizer ensures that during a stall, the aircraft will pitch forward (nose down), and not back (nose upward).
I call having your nose too far up during a stall a “bad attitude.” ^_^
    I hope this helps somebody!!
