I would like to tell everyone that I watched this video three years ago. I have now r&r'ed the engines out of 4 Gl1200's. This video is the best way to do it right !!! The first time it took me 5 hours to get it out. Now 2 and 1/2 hours. THIS IS A GREAT VIDEO.................. Thanks PS. I still review this video before starting each one. Removing one out of a 1985 GL1200 trike, today.
I’ve had to do a couple stators on mine. Last weekend realized the stator is bad again. Any suggestions on why they keep burning up?
@@12yearssober Pulling to many amps or to many lights. May be just the voltage regulater putting out to many volts.
Steve, Just wanted to thank you for posting so an exceptionally good video demonstration. I have an 86 and without your video would have been forced to sell for parts as the bike is not worth the cost of repair at the dealership. Your video is very specific, to the point, and covers just about everything. Thanks for taking the time you put into this. I have the engine out and will be watching the stator video next. Keep up the great work here and on your forum.
Just starting lol
Did this after this video last month alone no assistent. Absolutely doable for a bit experienced home mechanic. Only "diffcult" part was getting the engine in place, but I did it alone with a dolly and two jacks, not very hard alone but not a walk in the park. Replaced the stator and have 14.5 volts charging now. I much prefer this two day job to the "poor boy" conversion. NB. order exhaust studs beforehand, it is a pleasure to install shiny new bolts instead og the rusty old ones even if they dont break. (I would not hesitate to pull the engine again if I had to). Remember to do all operations in the correct order, and dont forget steps as it Will be a nightmare to dismantle again for a forgotten rubber boot or a electrical cable router wrongly !
Fredrik Hoffmann doing a stator myself....
i want to thank you for the videos i have a gl1200 aspencade i tore the motor out in one night had to wait for the parts took about 2 hours to replace the stator then spent about 8 hours off and on putting it all back i had alot more to do then what was in the video but it worked and the bike runs great this is the first time i have done any bike work at all and did it all myself. thanks agin for all the info and help
chris
It's about a full days work, and that's if you don't come across problems. Snapped exhaust header studs & muffler clamp bolts are common, and that causes delays. I usually split the work over a couple of days, usually about two and a half or three hours to get the engine out, an hour to remove the dead stator and fit the new one. Putting the engine back in takes me three to four hours.
Thank you for this video you saved me a lot of time. I have a 1985 GL1200 Ltd and noticed I had the cross member rusted out at the kickstand I started to tear the whole bike down till I seen your video thanks again and looking forward to more videos
I'd like to thank you. I'm just about to begin this process and you're videos will lead the way lol I will post again with an update in a few days.
This is an awesome video, I am an experienced mechanic on gold wings but, this is the daunting task if you have never done this model bike, Thank you steve
I dont mean to be so offtopic but does someone know of a way to get back into an Instagram account??
I was stupid forgot the login password. I would appreciate any help you can give me!
@Zain Chaim instablaster ;)
@Briggs Malcolm I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site thru google and Im trying it out now.
Seems to take quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
@Briggs Malcolm It did the trick and I now got access to my account again. I am so happy:D
Thanks so much, you saved my ass :D
@Zain Chaim you are welcome :D
Wow I have never seen an engine so difficult to remove.
I’ll be taking the engine out of my recently acquired ‘82 GL1100 to fix the starter clutch. This video pretty much shows everything I need to be on the lookout for. Now if I could only find a retired mechanic in my neighbourhood Who’s interested in getting his hands dirty to help with this mega project.
Nicely done. I like hand ratchets but them electric ratchets are pretty good
I have a thought , what if on these gl 1200 the stator fail that we could add a RAT - ram air turbine that would charge the battery ?-like we have in aircraft - on my old gold wing back in the 80s the stator would often fail . Now if we could put in a RAT in a good location on the gl1200 then stator problem solved - no belts , not much to mod , you could use an alternator connected to field from dc q1 volt system , have it turning by air - now the only down side I can see is if you are stuck in traffic but if you have a hot battery that may not be an issue.
I have a 1984 Interstate and this video is SUPER and a Job Well Done.
In response to BIKERMETOO the reason for demonstrating engine removal is obvious.
At some point, someone out there will need to tackle this job, and this video is really
informative to anyone contemplating doing such an engine removal.
Excellent Vid Steve...Horrible noise just appeared in my 81 gl1100. Looks like an "engine out"and strip..and your videos will be invaluable
looking at buying an aspencade ,,. but it has charging issues ..if its the the stator i hear you must remove the engine to change so this vid may become very handy
I remove engine in 5 hours. Very easy and fine job.
Thank you guys so much... Life savers
Thanks for the very instructional video, one of UA-cam's best !
14:35 - 14:55 What if you are doing it by yourself and rotator cuff tears on each shoulder.
Pay someone to help with that part or rig up a better jack to do the holding and lifting?
My stator went out i think I'm going to cry .Holy cow i wish they made the poor boy altenator kit still .I think I might make one or die trying.
I salute you ...great video. I complement you doing this job with one hand ...im scared to it with two hands ✋...wow , great job
I found an error;
At around 7 minutes into the video, I mistakenly called the water pump cover the thermostat cover. Apologies for any confusion.
I just found out on the internet that the anti freeze on these Honda's required the special Honda Anti Freeze. There is something in regular anti freeze that can damage some gaskets and rubber items on them. I just wanted to share this for anyone else like myself that is new to working on them. And so it reminded me to be sure and check outfor things like this as I am only familiar with auto mechanics etc.
The Honda version has no silicates (from what I understand). The silicates (in regular automotive antifreeze) act like little scouring pads keeping everything "clean", but are actually too abrasive, and actually cause wear. Look for any brand WITHOUT the silica additives.
Excellent video 👍
Do you know or do you know someone who has some advise for installing an electric fuel pump on a gl1000 k2 engine
Kind regards
How do you get the long bolt out I'm hitting it with a hammer but not budging is there another way don't want to hit harder incase I break something. I need to remove the kickstand frame part it's rusted through and won't hold the bike up
I swapped one gl1200 into another gl1200 and now none of the guages or guage cluster works? Where do i look? Any fuses blown maybe? This is on a 1984 gl1200 interstate
I found a 1987 Honda Aspencade with 17,000 miles and in excellent condition. What would you say the value is on one these. It is all original and the seats are perfect shape. It needs a new stater installed though. Thanks .
I have a 1986 Aspencade that has 3rd gear and 5th gear going out. I guess I need to remove the engine and replace the components that are bad.
¢Thank you from Spain Steve!!
Whats up steve my lights on my gl1200 84 are pulsating front and rear send me a PM and I'll send you a video of the bike had to get a jump started but it stayed running afterwards for quite some time till I turned it off obviously
Hello! I am your subscriber. I need help. I have a Honda GL1200 motorcycle. How are the bearings installed in the wheels on the outer cage? With light tension or loose?
i would like to know what i need to put a gm alternator on my 1987 1200 gl
and how to do it
I removed my 1200 engine and did not have to remove the timing covers and belts
Its probably already on the comments pages...why was the engine removed ?
I was about to add flanges on the cradle and split the frame i half front to back, this job seems unnesesarly dificult :/
So does the driveshaft just slide off or is there a clip that has to be removed?
fyi theirs an adjuster under the back of the fake tank, it locks up so you can remove the seat
@ 1358 u pulled engine & did not say any thing about the exhaust removed from the left side? to slide the engine out
Common sense
i have a 1986 goldwing trike. It shifts smooth,no grinding,no noise. But there is no power to the rear wheels. What is wrong with the drivetrain?
Good job
do you have a video on how to open the case I through a rod and I'm swapping the case and replacing the piston but I don't know how to take it all apart without messing something up..any advice?
If I ever have to pull a GL1500 engine again, I will make a video of the procedure.
Great video. Any chance you can do one for the GL1500 as well? I have to drop my engine to replace my starter gear and would greatly appreciate any added assistance.
minuts 16.25: lifters noise!!! Something going wrong?
Check out the "poorboy stator conversion" threads on the forum.
So how long did that take, really? I'm up against a stator replacement....
Excellent job! and excellent video work
Many tanks, this will be usefull dismounting my 82' gl1100 :)
Hmmm makes replacing the stator sound like not much more work than adapting an external alternator.... thanks!
Dude was making ASMR videos before they were called ASMR.
I have no idea why I only have 60 psi compression in my #4 cylinder of my 84 Gl 1200.. I took the head off and the cylinder looks perfect. Changed the valves. But the psi is still 60. Doesn't use oil. But barely runs and gets awful mpg. Other cylinders are between 125 and 150 psi. My theory I have a shop manual that describes how to remove the engine and take it apart. But so far I am reluctant to try it. I would like to watch a video or see a blog from someone who has tried to do it,
The only trick I know of is draining the oil replace it with Non detergent oil let it run 300/400 miles change back to detergent oil, help my truck wonders, I was told it reseal the rings ?
I dropped my engine for a shorted stator. When I opened the stator cover I discovered the flywheel had come loose and had grinded itself into the stator. reason was stripped threads on the flywheel nut... has anyone heard of this before ?
Yes... just got the cover back on, and the engine ready to begin the re-installation process. I was considering ignoring it and doing the PoorBoy conversion, but I decided to go ahead and replace my stator. Saved the engine. My theory is as the nut came lose, right at the last bit, the flywheel knocked it off as it flopped lose, striping that last little bit.
The GL1100 has a circlip on the end of the shaft, did you remove that?
Great tuto ! Thank you!
good video, would be much better if you would talk/tell while you are working.
Alright I need help; I cannot get the engine to slide out of the drive shaft. What do I need to do, the engine in seized up, and I cannot turn the timing belts.
His engine bolts are way easier to get out than the ones I have
I got everything off but the fucken drive shaft won't come out. Mines a 1980 1100
great tutorial, I hope I never have to do it.
power tools? degreaser? DAMN
