I just got a 6 1/4 inch golden bristle nose pleco 2 days ago from my local fish store. He is absolutely beautiful so I thank you for you informational video. He is in a 130 gallon tank with lots of wood with the right parameters. I hope he lives a few more years.
We have 2 super reds, 2 blue eyed lemons, 2 cracked, and a blue phantom pleco in our tanks. They are amazing fish to own and a lot of fun to watch. Thank you for the great video
I know this is an older post and less people will read this. I need to say after watching many post on bristle nose this is the best on what to feed yours. The variety of veggies and fruits they eat is astonishing. I add water melon for a treat they devour it immediately.
My plecko have spawned 6 times in 6 months, sold 70 and have loads of them in different sizes. The Dad is absolutely brilliant ,he guards the hole and babies all day just fanning his fins, I assume he comes out sometime for food ,but it must be at night.
Man, thankyou for this! I've tried to keep BN for a while now and keep getting deaths in the tank! Checked everything and had NO answer as to why they were dying. After watching your clip and a couple of others i think they were starving to death. I'll up the feeding and see how I go.
+L.A.in22Dayz Yup! They don't eat it directly so much as they just inadvertently end up ingesting some while they rasp on it. Aids their digestion and helps prevent bloat. Thanks so much for the kind words!!
The males get bristles on their snouts! LOVE it!!! SNOUTS!!!! I have a dozen different breeds of Plecos, but the Ancistrus are my favorites!!!!!! Simple, but so very awesome!!!!!!! (My Common Pleco "Percy" is over 11" now. He is the reason I have gone from a 30 gallon to a 55 to a 125!) I'll do whatever I can to keep him, but I wish they weren't so "common". People have no idea how big they get!!! Pet stores should mostly sell the Bristlenose variety. I also have had no luck with feeding peas. They love cucumber and French style green beans.
Great info mate, glad I always had the wood in the tank, that is only because I always liked wood in my tanks, so there's never been any problems, just like you said, also love the guppies in your tank to bro. God bless you mate. Great vid.
You can buy wooden pleco chips ! I dont use wood right now in my tank because water become brownish and my tank is pretty small. But im gonna buy bigger tank.
You can also boil the wood to pull a lot of the tannins out. Different woods release different amounts of tannins (the stuff that stains the water) too.
I used to keep Bristlenose without wood before I knew they needed it and they all got to about 4 or 5 inches before they died 😂 but now I always have driftwood in my tanks
I purchased 4 each from 4 different sources. They were between 1.5 &2". Bright red..some had small spots of brown. As they grew, some became a dark red. The first 2 spawns have mostly bright red spawn..all had brown spots or area. 3 spawn offered mostly dark red with dark brown areas. They appear to be calico plecos. My plan is to only breed the brightest from now on. Dilemma is how do I sell the others? A couple are almost bleached clear with small brown dots down there back. I actually think they all look cool..Thanks for sharing your tanks and information..
Great video!! I feed All my Pleco's zucchini, I find that my carnivorous Pleco's always eat the skin and my more veggie based Pleco's go nuts for the middle flesh first and work there way outwards
I love seeing bristles in a non sand tank. I hate how everyone says certain fish can only be in sanded tanks cause they are so sensitive. Couldn’t be more wrong. Don’t want sharp substrates but they all work well in various setups. Hell I’ve got mbuna spawning in medium size river pebbles and they are able to push the rocks across the tank no issue to dig their holes..
Great video. I recently put 2 calico plecos in my tank last Friday and today my male is fanning the cave, I watched your video to see if maybe he is on eggs. The next few weeks are gonna be rough waiting to see if anything happens!
+Cathy Robidoux if he’s fanning just outside the cave, he’s likely inviting the female. After she accepts his invitation, he’ll be inside for about 1.5-2 weeks before the babies all come out to play. :)
Interesting. Bushynose don't necessarily eat the wood but their rasping on it does result in incidental fiber intake which my experience (and my reading) shows to prevent bloat and other digestive issues. Perhaps the diet you feed is high enough in fiber to help prevent any issues? Or you could just be fortunate in not having had issues so far.
I have a female albino Bristlenose. She love all the wood in her tank she has to share with Sliver dollars. She was sold to me as a male. I like her so she just stayed that been 5 years now and she 6.5 inches long. She will eat just about any veggies I feed her.
Great video! Loaded with with information. I am just getting into the hobby. Started with a planted 5.5 gallon. Now I'm setting up a 2 stage homemade stand with a 38 gallon bow front and a 20 gallon long. I've had huge success breeding apple snails and livebearers. I'm ready for something a bit more interesting and more of a challenge! Although since I'm doing largely planted tanks, I'm afraid they may be out of the picture due to their reputation of destroying plants. What do you breed yours in? What is the moss?
+Elijah Petersen In my experience, these guys aren't plant destroyers at all. I've heard that they may munch on Amazon sword plants if they aren't fed enough but I've never seen it happen in my tanks. The breeding tank I've been using for them is a 40 gallon breeder. That moss? Well...that's actually a thick blanket of algae that I just allowed to take over. Lol
Awesome video it’s very informative! I’ve been trying to breed my new bristle nose for the past 3 weeks with no success. I’ve noticed the male fanning, but the female seems to as well every once in awhile. It’s odd behavior and i’m curious as to what you think about it?
Great informative video. Have a pair of bushynose that I am trying to breed. No luck yet. They are in a 29 with angels, so I am thinking that that is the problem. Nice looking tanks and livebearers
@@TheFishNerd hey thanks for answering me :) i was just thinking about my pleco fries, i started feeding them yesterday but i'm not sure if they're eating properly, i heard that when we give them vegies we should take them back from the tank after 4-6 hours so it won't cause a disorder with the water quality, is that rigth?
@@ohayomoyaho2917 It really depends on your tank, really. The bigger the tank and the more filtration you're working with, the longer you can leave it in there. For feeding the fry, they'll rasp on flake food as well if you're afraid they're not getting enough of the veggies. You can also mix up the veggies, too. If they aren't paying much attention to cucumber, try green beans, etc.. 👍🏼
thanks i have got some wood now. Is bog wood ok, he seems to love it. PS i love your channel you can see my pleco on my bristlenose pleco profile. Sorry about the quality of the video I will sort it out soon . That viedo was filmed a few months ago so he would have grown quite a bit from then
Thanks for the info! Just got my first super red for my 75 gallon. I have a regular bristle nose in my 29 gal and he is doing great 👍. I think plecostomous are cool fish!
Nice video!! I've have a pair of bristle nose in my tank for about 9 months now but I don't have any wood in there and they seem to be thriving. I make fresh zucchini available to them as much as possible, is the zucchini a good substitution for their digestion needs? or do you think I should get some asap? The zucchini has a lot of fiber which is good. The wood isn’t so much of a “get it or they’ll die” thing as it is a “it’s good for them and reduces the risk of bloat” type of thing.
Can you keep only the same spawn together? Mine are albino bristlenose plecos born together and so far not fighting. I did divide into 3 aquariums. Can I mix them back together?
I don't think Bristlenose actually rasp wood like some other plecos do. I believe they are eating the biofilm that grows on the wood. I had bristlenose in my rock scaped mbuna tank for years and they grew just fine and bred too. They do seem to be out more now that I've moved them to my planted discus tank with driftwood.
+Kyle Raines You're right, they don't deliberately eat it like some others. But rasping on the biofilm results in some inadvertent ingestion of wood. Not totally necessary for their survival but it can greatly reduce the risk of bloat.
I can tell you with 100% confidence that bn’s do rasp wood I breed mine in wooden log caves. Some caves they have eaten holes through!!! (Takes a long time) but they do eat wood
Hi Nice video man 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼look can you help me out my bristle nose plecos lated eggs in cave and male is there fanning it.... Now it’s a 45 gallon aquarium and I have 3 plecos male and two females and I have 3 small angel fish.. Can they survive in cave or I need another aquarium to move dad and eggs.. Also do I need water change now since they laid eggs?? Let me know please I would like to have some babies survive and it’s pretty cool my kids they love it and asking me what to do. Alan
The only thing you'll have to worry about is the angels eating the babies. If you want to make sure the babies don't get eaten, I would move them to another tank. The other plecos would be fine. Only issue is the angels.
The Fish Nerd don't you have issues with fry getting stuck in between the gravel when they come out of the cave ? How many fry did you get per spawn ? And did they all survive ?
Ravindu Wickramasinghe Nope, never had any issues. They're actually pretty good swimmers by the time they come out of the cave because they basically have to be able to escape past the male before he lets them out. Fortunately, I've only ever lost one pleco fry that I know of. The first batch was only about 12 fry but the second was about 50 and the third was over 100 (that one may have included eggs from both females, I'm not sure).
I'm going to try and get some and get them to breed. Got the tank setup done. But here in Sri Lanka Good Pleco Varieties are hard to come by. We have normal Plecos and normal Albinos. But fancy stuff are rare here. So waiting till a Importing Fish Store brings a batch of them so i can buy.😊😊
Thanks for all the info! I just added a bristlenose pleco to my community tank. I have a large piece of fake driftwood in the tank -- is this sufficient for their driftwood requirement?
Gotcha. They would need actual wood in order to get the fiber. It’s not something where “they’ll definitely die without it” but it does significantly lower the risk of bloat.
Thanks for getting back to me on this! I am currently looking into getting some manzanita or ghostwood for my little bn pleco. Good to know that it's not imminent but I'm definitely getting some real driftwood for him! :)
Just saying I have had my bristlenose for about a year now and I have never had wood in my tanks and I have never had any problem with bloating or disease with him. I do want to put wood with him in the future it is just that I haven’t gotten to it yet.
It's not that they are sure to die without wood. But it is beneficial and lowers the risk of things like bloat. Not that bloat is guaranteed without it (or guaranteed to not happen with it).
how often should I feed my rubbernose pleco? I usually feed him a Hikari algae wafer every other day but I feel like that is too much. Any suggestions on a feeding schedule where I can mix his diet with wafers and veggies without overfeeding?
That doesn’t sound like too much. Plecos are heavy eaters. If it isn’t eating all the food you can cut back but daily feedings with veggies served a couple times a week is generally fine.
Good channel - can I ask if I can keep a few pleco's in the same tank? I have a golden bristle nosed pleco approx 6/8 inchs and i'm setting up a new 64 litre tank and should be matured in about 6 weeks with drift wood, clay pot hiding places and lots of plants. I would like to introduce my black small bristle nose approx 2.1/2 half inches with about 10 sun/orange mollys Let me know and thank you for your video
I hope you are still checking the comments from time to time... Cause I need help ): My Albino Plecos are turning blackish... I keep them fed... I don't leave the lights on 24/7 and the others fish don't bother them... I just don't know why they're turning black
I’ve had my female bristlenose pleco for about a year and a half now and she’s fully grown in my 10 gallon tank without wood. Do you suggested I add wood to my tank to fullfil her life?
My one male Chocolate Bristlenose Pleco is 6 inches and he is just 2 years old and my other male is around 5 inches long and he is just over a 1 year old.
They also breed really easily. I didn't mean to let them breed and I didn't think their was a cave they could use but they found one that would work and used it. I put my male in with the female May 5, 2020 and I had eggs on May 7, 2020. So now I have a huge clutch of Pleco Fry they are all hatched out now.
I have a Bristlenose Pleco without wood for a couple of mounths and it has been fine in a 15 gallon it is 1.5 inches when should i upgrade. I will get some wood soon.
+Charc's Fish World As long as you're not overstocked and you're able to keep your water parameters stable and clean, I don't think you need to be in a big hurry to upgrade yet. At 1.5 inches, it's still pretty small and probably has at least a few months before it reaches maturity. An adult is gonna feel and look a lot less cramped in something like a 20 long though. :)
How long do they live? Googling it, I found 3, 5, 12 or 20 years. Either there is incredible variation in their lifespan, or some people are confused :(
+CoralMan24 I really don't do much in the way of cleaning. I squeeze out the sponge filters a couple times per year and I use the drip system to keep the water changed.
My boss had a common pleco for 14 years and has never had wood. He's always had artificial plants and decor. I have never had any luck feeding any sort of vegetable to my plecos though..
thanks for the good videos. and can i ask something?... my BN plecos are having a problem now... their tail fin is melting and spliting... i did some 60% water change last night... what is the reason and what should i do for this problem? thank you.
Hi. I have an african cichlid tank that I keep api aquarium salt in at all times. Just the amount per the instructions on the box and replace the required amount during water changes. My question is: I just added a large male bristlenose to this tank, so will he be ok with the salt in there?
I don’t have any experience with using aquarium salt...probably? I’d keep an eye on him to make sure he acts ok. If he starts showing signs of stress I’d get him moved to another tank.
joey prince yep, mine are always the same color. I’ve not had any black ones. If both your male and female are orange, it could be one of them had a brown parent.
So what’s the minimum tank size u would say for breeding? Also is there any types of food that could provide the nutrients that u say they need to survive from the wood?
+Savage Catz I’d say at least a 29 gallon for breeding. They can have well over 50 babies at a time. The wood basically prevents them from getting bloat. You’ll want to feed a lot of fibrous vegetable like cucumber and green beans. If you can add wood, though, I would.
Apologies if this has been covered in the comments below, but how do adult Bristlenose Plecos react with each other? Is it best to keep a group or can they become territorial and better as the only pleco in a tank (48 gallon for reference)
I didn’t mean to say that they can’t survive at all without wood. Just that it’s beneficial, reduces the risk of bloat and increases the chances of long term survival. They can and do live without wood but the odds are better when they have it.
Do you know what's wrong with my male bristlenose pleco? He lives alone but his stomach is really swollen. 😢 He is still quite small, maybe 2,5 inches.
Need some help. I'm currently raising my temperature in my African cichlid tank and dosing with salt to try and fight off an ich outbreak that I caught early. What is the max temp that about a 4 inch adult male albino bristlenose pleco can withstand? Thanks.
Hey the fish nerd I want to set up a 40 gallon breeder for super red bristle plecos I already know I need sponge filter my substrate is eco complete what type of plants should I get and what size fluval light should I get
+Beast _ Gago whatever plants you like! Plant choice won’t be an influencer for breeder the plecos so it’s just a matter of what you like. For the light, just whichever one fits the tank and has enough light to support your plant choices, whether you decide to go with low, moderate or high light plants.
+FishPerson Vblogs Plecos will certainly eat any other fish's eggs if given the chance (as with most fish). That said, depending on how vigilant your angels are at guarding their eggs, it's not a sure thing that the plecos will get a chance. My angels have been successful in rearing free-swimming fry a few times despite being in a community tank complete with a Bristlenose. As for the angelfish eating pleco fry, while I've never witnessed it (I've not kept angels in my pleco breeding tanks), I'm sure they would eat any new fry that gave them the opportunity. Angels can be fairly predatory sometimes and will eat anything that fits in their mouth (mine once ate a whole school of neon tetras).
The Fish Nerd You know I have an idea. You are free to not do it at anytime. I was thinking if we could do a collaboration where you talk about your plecos on my channel. If you have an iPhone I could text you more details.
I have an adult bristle nose. Male I'm sure. He's the only bristle nose in a 55 gallon. I've got mollies, platies, cory cats, Khuli loach loaches, guppies, n few other type fish. My question is, after I start feeding, the fish go down to bottom feed. He'll get moving around n he's like a half pint bull dozer. Lol I'm meaning that all of a sudden 10 fish go scatter all different ways. There he is king of the tank eating whatever by himself. Is that normal? He likes shrimp pellets n didn't realize till I watched this segment that I should throw some grandma l green bean n such. I'll try that lol. Thank u

I use all kinds of wood. Malaysian driftwood, spiderwood, cholla wood, mopani, etc.
Most fish/pet stores will have it.
Okay thanks for the reply :)
Great video.....been thinking of getting a couple to keep on top of algae. Do they have any issues with cory cats?
I've kept them with cories and had no issues.
What kind of wood do you have to use? Drift wood??
Any aquarium safe wood will do
I love this guys videos

The Fish Nerd Agreed. Great video btw!
+Kyle Raines thanks!
I can tell you with 100% confidence that bn’s do rasp wood
I breed mine in wooden log caves. Some caves they have eaten holes through!!! (Takes a long time) but they do eat wood
Will different types crossbreed? Say blue eyed lemon and super red for example. Just curious
I think this video is very informative
+Kevin Alvarez thanks Kevin!
I was wondering if they could be kept in coldwater
Does spider wood work for Bristlenose plecos? Just got a baby yesterday
Sure does! Love spiderwood!
Can pleco live in cold water with goldfish
They cant live in water as cold as goldfish can but goldfish can live in water as warm as plecos can.
How long have you kept bristle nose Flaco’s?
Hi
Nice video man 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼look can you help me out my bristle nose plecos lated eggs in cave and male is there fanning it....
Nice Content. You got yourself a new Sub😍😍. What are the sizes of your 2 tanks with BN Plecos in it ?
Ravindu Wickramasinghe Thanks!! Those are 40 gallon breeders.
The Fish Nerd Thanks for the Info😁😁
I'm going to try and get some and get them to breed. Got the tank setup done. But here in Sri Lanka Good Pleco Varieties are hard to come by. We have normal Plecos and normal Albinos. But fancy stuff are rare here. So waiting till a Importing Fish Store brings a batch of them so i can buy.😊😊
Thanks for all the info! I just added a bristlenose pleco to my community tank. I have a large piece of fake driftwood in the tank -- is this sufficient for their driftwood requirement?
Is it made of real wood?
It's made of polyresin.
Sure thing!! I love manzanita wood. It’s probably my favorite. 😁
Ok
It just made me confused that I have had one for a year without it and nothing has happened to it
how often should I feed my rubbernose pleco?
In general, you can keep multiple bristlenose together with no problem.
However, a 64 liter tank is probably too small for multiple bristlenose.
I hope you are still checking the comments from time to time... Cause I need help ): My Albino Plecos are turning blackish... I keep them fed... I don't leave the lights on 24/7 and the others fish don't bother them... I just don't know why they're turning black
That's something I've never heard of before...
I only have 1 bristlenose. I called him "Pumba" because I think they have the same faces as warthogs
Great name!
Hi where do you get your algae plants?
I’ve had my female bristlenose pleco for about a year and a half now and she’s fully grown in my 10 gallon tank without wood. Do you suggested I add wood to my tank to fullfil her life?
You could...my meaning though wasn’t that they can’t live without it...just that it greatly reduces the risk of bloat.
My one male Chocolate Bristlenose Pleco is 6 inches and he is just 2 years old and my other male is around 5 inches long and he is just over a 1 year old.
Nice!!
@@TheFishNerd thanks, I think his parents must have been decent size and it ran in the genetics.
Either there is incredible variation in their lifespan, or some people are confused :(
I have a friend whose main breeder male is over 15 years old and still going strong. :)
Mine is 16y at least.
The canned french cut green beans? Or do they have those frozen at most markets?
I use the canned
Are they territorial and do they need caves and stuff?
How do you clean your tanks with all the life in them?
+CoralMan24 I really don't do much in the way of cleaning. I squeeze out the sponge filters a couple times per year and I use the drip system to keep the water changed.
My boss had a common pleco for 14 years and has never had wood. He's always had artificial plants and decor. I have never had any luck feeding any sort of vegetable to my plecos though..
Common plecos aren't as herbivorous as bristlenose. They're more omnivorous with a taste for meaty foods.
Hey quick question. I have a L144 male and a L045. My question is what is the outcome? Will I get a calico or will I get L045 and L144?
Most likely a brown hybrid like this one: www.planetcatfish.com/common/species.php?species_id=5801
thanks for the good videos. and can i ask something?... my BN plecos are having a problem now... their tail fin is melting and spliting... i did some 60% water change last night... what is the reason and what should i do for this problem? thank you.
I really enjoyed this video. Do u ship these super reds?
Thanks! I do from time to time.
The Fish Nerd do u ship to Canada?
what are those bushy greens? are those moss with hair algae?
That’s just straight algae. Lol
Hair algae right? I’m going to add some to my ghost shrimp tank
might be a silly question.. but do you cook the veggies and then put them in?
Samantha Cameron not a silly question :)
I'll blanch stuff like cucumber or spinach just to get it to sink. Canned green beans I just drain and feed.
Hi, if I were to get a small group of 5 red bristlenose pleco, would they do ok in a 55 with 2-5" clown loaches? Ty Hank
Should be just fine assuming you wouldn’t be otherwise overstocked.
When your super red fry leave the cave are they all the same colour?
My male was on eggs and when his fry left there is a mix of oranges and blacks ?
joey prince yep, mine are always the same color.
The Fish Nerd ok!
Also u said”if I you could add *wood* though I *would* “
Ha man can’t find your store online wanted to buy some
Unfortunately, the website isn't up anymore. You can still email me at thefishnerd21@gmail.com for availability/prices.
Apologies if this has been covered in the comments below, but how do adult Bristlenose Plecos react with each other? Is it best to keep a group or can they become territorial and better as the only pleco in a tank (48 gallon for reference)
I have them living in a large group now with no problems. I'd say just make sure you have a cave for each adult male.
How do you deal with the massive amount of poop/mulm? Spot vacuum daily?
Honestly, I let it go as long as it's not floating around the water column. Then I'll run a HOB filter to clear that up if/when that happens.
Do you still sell these Bristol’s nose Plecos ? If so what is the process?
Thanks !
I do! Shoot me an email thefishnerd21@gmail.com for prices/availability.
They do not need wood, ive raised two bristle nose plecos and they have now successfully giving birth to their first clutch of eggs.
Really hard to tell without observing him but sounds like bloat.
Need some help. I'm currently raising my temperature in my African cichlid tank and dosing with salt to try and fight off an ich outbreak that I caught early. What is the max temp that about a 4 inch adult male albino bristlenose pleco can withstand? Thanks.
I've seen them kept in the mid eighties. I don't know about a max temp short term...
@@TheFishNerd thanks. I have the tank at 87 now and he seems to be fine. Gonna leave it for about 10 days. Hope this high heat and salt method works.
Sure thing! Good luck! If all else fails, I've had good luck with Ich X.
i love Bristlenose Plecos
+Pleco Zone me too!
The Fish Nerd okay thank you
Do the plecos eat angelfish eggs? Do the angelfish eat the baby plecos?
The Fish Nerd Thanks fir the insightful detail. I think I'm just going to keep the angel breeding tank separate from the bnp
That's the best approach for angels if you want to maximize your success rate with raising the fry. :)
The Fish Nerd You know I have an idea. You are free to not do it at anytime. I was thinking if we could do a collaboration where you talk about your plecos on my channel. If you have an iPhone I could text you more details.
+FishPerson Vblogs shoot me an email to thefishnerd21@gmail.com
Lots of people say that they need bogwood, I have spiderwood, would that be okay?
Yup! Any wood will do.
What kind of wood should you put in the tank
Any variety of aquarium driftwood will do just fine.
Do you boil any of the veggies before feeding them to your plecos?
+Nomad I'll boil fresh veggies just long enough to get them to sink. Canned veggies I just add because they sink already.
Bro, i have a tank for more than a year now with no wood and my bnp still lives.... so tell me hows it essential
ua-cam.com/video/Cl_0qmIkVRY/v-deo.html
Thank u
Lol yup, that’s normal. They’re greedy little guys!
