Anyone have firsthand experiences or family stories about the storms in the video? Post them below.

My dad told me the story of the time he went to the home of his stepdad's relatives in New Orleans in the late 1960's. They went into the attic and a brand new axe was tied to one of the rafters and next to it was a new piece of plywood in the roof. When he asked why it was there, they told him that when they moved in the elderly neighbors told them to buy an axe and put it in the attic. They ignored the comment until Betsy hit and they were stuck in the attic and were only able to escape after bashing through the roof with whatever objects they could find. Once they repaired the house, they placed the axe there, where it remains to this day. Thankfully the family evacuated for Katrina and they didn't need to use the axe.

Just binged your historic Louisiana hurricane series - very well done works! I was a little kid in NE Louisiana when Betsy came through; I remember our preacher, Bro. Tom Parker, going house to house to check on everyone. I also remember that the three weeping willows my mother had planted and nursed all summer were all uprooted and destroyed; she was not too happy about that.

Hilda also hit Larose with an F-4 tornado (I’d assume, possibly the same one that hit Laplace)

Actually, I think your mistaken on the location of the tornado, and F-4 tracked for a mile and a half in Larose killing 22 and injuring many more. Debris was found as far as over 15 miles away from the tornadoes track.

When we get to Katrina could you possibly do a graph showing it’s similar path to Betsy

Part four out of six, even though this goes to 1965? ... I guess New Orleans is going to get flooded a few more times than I expected.

My dad was in the oil business and I was with him as he secured some of his company property in the New Orleans area before Betsy arrived. We became stranded after gas stations closed and rode out the storm in a hotel there. The storm destroyed his truck and heavily damaged the hotel we were in.
