S2000 AP2 VS Civic Type R FK8! Time Attack Shootout!

  • With a pair of borrowed front tires and extremely raised front suspensions, I found myself battling against my good friend Brian from BaoHouse Racing and his spanking new Civic Type R FK8 for the Group N class win at Hondameet VTEC Club. It's Turbo VS NA. FWD VS RWD. The young VS the experienced. Absolutely down to the wire fight! Check out BaoHouse Racing here: / baohousetuning
Special thanks to Scott Hollingsworth for being so kind and lending me the pair of Falkens, the Peeps at TTR for rescuing when I ran outta gas and Brian/BaoHouse crew for being such a good sport and helping me out as ever!

I've had my S2000 for 10 years now. Since then I've bought an STi, a Gen V Viper GTS, and recently a 2017 Corvette Z06/07. I can say that I still love my S2000. I installed Skunk2 headers, an Invidia TP, and recently an Apexi catback to quiet it down, along with a Clutchmasters heavy duty clutch. Last week some 18" O.Z. wheels were added along with some Pirelli PZero tires. It's a joy to drive. The fueling is smoother than any of my other cars. Honda nailed it with the S2000.

I know what you mean I've owned all the fan boy cars. 2 BNR32s, a BNR34, single JZA80, Evo VII, 2 JZS161s and the list goes on and my favorite two cars out of the bunch that I've owned the DC2 ITR and S2000. It's not the fastest thing in the world but its hella fun more so than anything else.

As much as I love some of the JDM "big boys" like the GT-R and the Supra, I've got a very big soft-spot for the S2K.
Honda should really start making RWD sports cars again and use the K20C1 in it.

Type R is a force to be reckoned with on the track (coming from an RS owner/track junkie). That being said, I'd take a S2000 over it everyday. Modern day classic. Why oh why have you lost your soul, Honda? Give us a new S2K!

Short wheel base.. makes the S2K oversteer happy, and lots of owners of them don't know this and lose control. Auctions are filled with S2Ks wrecked in the rear. Next, the Type-R has torque, so it can scoot out of the corners faster. But, I think the S2K remains heads and shoulders above the Type-R in pure driving thrill.

It didn't help that you're going in the turns too hot. At some point you should've adjusted your driving according to the tires. Looked like you drive better than the Type R driver though. I mean, if the nurburgring times is any indication, the Type R should've put some distance from you. I bet you can do better in the Type R than the S2K.

If you follow the Initial D S2000, it had a GT Wing which enabled it to be pretty neutral at low to mid speed corners, something that will enable keeping up and overtake the aerodynamically bred Type R.

Think about it this way: the S2000 was a no-compromise sports car, and Honda now managed to make a daily-drive-able family hatchback just as fast, if not faster, without losing its comfort and usability. Not easy to do at all!

I have yet to drive it, so I can't comment on that just yet... I will say this though. Both cars still had more left to give, me with tires and the Type R with suspension tweaks and so on. Type R is a very capable car for sure. Worth every cent of 35K but not a penny more to me.

Need tires that can properly heat cycle and you don't need a rear wing. You're frequently turning in too early causing the rear end grip issues for exit. S2k's are notoriously tail happy, as they are faster around a corner if you can help steer it with the throttle. A bit of slide to change direction is fast, too much and you'll just scrub your speed off. Nice driving other than a couple of corners that need some work. car sounds great.

Great driving! The S2000 is a good competitor but I have the Integra type-R which got stolen, I would think that would be a redoubtable car on that track. Integra is faster out of corners and the S2000 faster on top end of rpm.

You were catching up at the brake points and a little more mid-corner. Surprisingly not on corner exit.

Good video though I usually don't like comparisons like this - was there comparable fuel level in both cars, driver level, tire life (as in grip performance left)?
Either way, shows the Type R is pretty solid. You over-charged several corners in the first few laps and were busy gathering it back up when you could have been on throttle if you would have slowed down just a hair on entrance.
    Solid car control! 👍🏽

+Gamaliel Aguilar this wasn't a comparison... it was just an on-track battle. All the factors are different.
Also funny you said that, the very first flying lap was actually my fastest lap ha.

Jackie Ding sounds about right - I do club racing in a pretty competitive class (PRO3 in the Pacific Northwest) where we have 25-40 car fields and the pointy end of the grid are pro level drivers.
In qualifying trim and even in the first few laps of a race, barring too much traffic battling, the fastest laps always come in laps 1-3, maybe 4 because after the out-lap (to get things warmed up) that's when the tires and brakes are at their freshest states.
Then they will still mostly work but just not as performant as those first few laps, unless you lockup or light up the rears in a RWD car, then your screwed until they cool down, if they cool down.
Not trying to bag your driving - which is actually quite good - just that you might have been able to catch the Type R in those first few laps if you weren't busy gathering the car back up on corner exits. This is at least my hypothesis from the video but only the data can confirm.
      Keep up the driving!

If it's setup right, FWD is definitely alot more stable than RWD.

There are many factors that you should consider here:
    • that S2000 is more than 15 years old with old stock engine.
    • not just the rear tyre problem, but also your driving skill issue too. You slowed down too fast at corners. Your engine RPM is too low to catch up. You need to understand when your VTEC kicks in.
    • your shocks coilover setting issue
This can easily tell because there was another car tailing you each time you entered into corners from the rear view mirror of your S2000 clearly shown!

The way I do it, GoPro hat clip onto the top and center of the visor; blocks a bit of the view but it's never been a problem for me.

That S2000 isn't catching shit for traction; something is definitely wrong. A driver mod is definitely needed too.
