- Testing out the Winchester USA ready ammunition in 9mm+P, .40 S&W and .45 ACP in a 10% Clear Ballistics test with 4 layers of denim and 1/4" medium density fiberboard. Always appreciative of any channel help :) www.patreon.co...
This video was a RARE one as I filmed it today, spent the afternoon editing it and released it right after. Generally I will film anywhere between a couple days to 4 weeks before I release videos, but because of firearms deer season here in MI and the crazy shoot at anything that moves neighbors, I didn't film for 17 days. My voice comes and goes but I am on my 5th week after having Covid of my voice not being right.
Man I can hear it buddy. That shit gotcha. God dammit. When China shuts down entire cities… They’ve only been working on it for 10 years so I think they must know what the hell is really going on. I sure hope this will be the end of it for you.
feel better, soon!
Be safe and heal up soon, Sam! Love your videos.
Man I hope you feel better. I have a good friend dealing with long COVID right now, and I’m glad to see that someone is doing better with it like yourself. Can you do a comparison video of the “best” ammo from various calibers? I’ve always carried 9mm, but have faith in the effectiveness and “shootability” of other calibers.
@@adamsaylor7427 I have actually began a list of ammo to get with a similar theme. But rather than best based on current ammo, I was going to do the highest 'stopping power' rounds in one video, like the Corbon 9mm+P 115 gr, Corbon .40 S&W 135 gr, Federal Hydrashok .45 ACP 230 gr and the Remington UMC .357 Magnum 125 gr. The latter 3 are all 94-96% one shot stop and I think the 9mm is 91%. I might add others to the list but I thought it be fun to see how they all compare.
I carry a 40 S&W and there's good reason why I will never stray away from federal HST ammo. Before I invested into it I watched lots of videos like this with ballistic gel tests and denim, and never once did I see the HST get clogged, it was nothing but superb performance. 9mm did pretty good in this one:-)
I EDC .45 and agree 100%...FEDERAL HSTs are the best. Period.
@@007Chancellor I actually now have three EDC guns in my rotation, I still have my 40, but I now also have a 45 and 9 and I have Federal HST in all of them 😁
This showcssed again the 9mm bias today. Off the shelf 9mm is getting loaded to almost +p velocity while .40,10mm and .45 get downloaded consistently. A 200gr .45acp should be right around 1050 from a 5.3 almost 5 and a half in barrel. A 165 .40 should be at 1150ish.
Thanks for weathering the weather and getting this to us, Sam. Always interesting to see where the ammo makers are focusing their efforts.
Thanks. At least it was like 38 degrees lol. Those days that are 20 and blowing snow I have filmed in are a lot less fun.
Appreciate your time and effort in producing these videos. Very consistent and thorough.
Well done Sam
I haven't tested the other calibers yet, but I was impressed with the performance of the 9mm from my 3" barrel- both bare gel & denim. Good ammo for the price...
I noticed it was only in these 3 calibers. The 9mm seems pretty good.
Some damn good marksmanship on that bullseye of that target!👏👏👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks. The 9mm does well, then the other start to open up a bit from recoil.
U sound like u might be under the weather a little bit u always have the best videos
Thanks. I got Covid over a month ago and somehow it has limited my ability to speak.
Thanks Sam great test! Have not seen these tested in .40 and .45acp, very interesting.
Great video as usual. But I feel these bullets are a failure by Winchester. I’d stick with their Ranger-T bonded or my favorite, Federal HSTs.
Amazing - just picked up a box of this in .45 and was curious how it would do. Thank you for reading my mind and testing this not only in a timely manner, but while still under the weather. Get well soon Sam!
I picked up my box 2 weeks ago. Maybe you read my mind instead lol
Great video.. the .40 is still a very powerful round.. i also think the manufacturers have reduced the velocity of the .40 Like they did with the .357 magnum.. all were still great rounds.. one request: when the temps freeze (if possible) do some videos shooting ice blocks, big ones not those little ones.. in the 80s we shot big blocks with 06s, 30-30s and 30 carbines at 250-300 yards.. thanks
Haha, I used to shoot the river with guns. Very rural area, river runs through property. What I have done some times that is pretty easy to do is just leave some gallons of water out there and shoot them. Always pretty cool as one frozen jug stops everything from handguns. Or run warm water on jug and cut the jug off and have a block, or frozen buckets to make some ice.
I appreciate your “real world” testing protocols. Those 40’s zipping straight through the gel after encountering denim was eye opening. May I suggest, when shooting at your IDPA steel at 7 to 12 yards, you could shoot “real world, failure drill”: two rounds center of mass as quick as possible and a third round to the head. That drill convinced me to give up on full power .357 magnums and focus my training and ammo selection on .38 Special+P. I got old; my hands got weaker; if I want to get consistent hits on the failure drill, .38 Special is my best choice. The effectiveness of your ammunition and firearm selection when shooting “Failure Drill” may be interesting to other viewers as well. Thanks for your work.
To see recoil and shootabilitu he can do a triple tap at his 7 yards or failure Mozambique which he did one video
@@bobjones-bt9bh It’s called the Mozambique Drill. And during the fighting in the African bush, there was a reason it was done.
It's sad that .40 has been abandoned at this point. An optimized and modern .40 round would be interesting. Anyone have any pet hand loads they would like to share?
40 is good I am more into 10mm & didn't want the odd chance to mix up mags & ammo , sold them all . I really liked the P239 in 40 S&W . 9mm is also good with good ammo .
Personally I feel the .40 S&W is the best cartridge ever. Going backwards on street and even woods data showing how well it does, then testing it for myself to show how the recoil is so low compared to other rounds in it's effective range, it really is the Goldilocks of rounds. Sure 10mm can be great in it's own platform, but a hot .40 S&W at it's maximum is right at that threshold where any more recoil (which would be in 10mm range) just starts to have a little more felt recoil than I want or feel comfortable with.
@@danoneill2846 There are so many affordable .40s for first time buyers (police trade-ins) and the caliber is affordable and available. The ammo mfrs seem to be focused on 9mm though due to volume. Lots of first time buyers now looking for a pistol that is probably too small for them to control, imo.
No it is still popular with me, I am all that matters not what I read and there is a huge assortment of devastating 40 rounds out there, how about Underwood 155gr XTP at a little over 1300 from a 226? How about Underwood extreme defender 115 at 1400 plus or the 60gr Civil Defence at over 2100fps.That modern enough.
@@GunSam I agree and I can carry 357 sig or 40 I usually go with 40, it really is the best overall defence cartridge for people that can handle it due to its short action and high capacity. It carries sufficient energy and very little drop out to 100 yds and loses little at 50 yds.
Good stuff. Some folks rag on me for my .40 but i don’t really care. I like it & I shoot it well. Thx for the videos.
Great comparison!
Thank you
They did better than I thought they would
Good test. The 9mm did incredibly well. The 40 was surprising with the overpenetration- normally with good velocity, u can often get more expansion with the MDF. My favorite 200 gr 45 is of course the old Speer Lawman 200 gr flying ashtray😁. Still loaded under the Gold Dot name, last time i looked. Good to know the Win load also works well
Bought these for my S&W Shield in late 2020 or early 2021 when I could find no HSTs, GDs, or other proven loads and the price even at the time wasn’t terrible. Had seen no tests on anything but 9mm (TN9Outdoors). His test got much shallower pen but expansion was amazing. Maybe they tweaked these a bit or maybe just difference in media. Either way, have been looking forward to you testing these in all available calibers. Disappointed in the other two, but feel in 9mm at least I made a good buy and would carry these.
This is a really good channel for ballistics, cause your clear concise and consistent .......... keep up the good work
Great video, a real eye opener! I was about to get some of these as an alternative to the Winchester Silvertips I now carry in my 9mm, 40 S&W and 45 Acp. I believe I'll stick with what I have. Thanks again.
Hoping your voice gets better soon. Covid lingered for about a month with me. I had no energy or motivation for about six weeks. You'll be fine.
Awesome GS《☆》40 is the Caliber of choice for our local police. I think the brand varies depending on price & availability. They may even use reloads at the range. Before I retired from the Aviation unit in 2016 the Pilots were carrying Glock 27s. Beat cops Glock 22s. I was Civil service Aircraft mechanic. No firearms issued to mechanics but I was often called upon to go on patrols in the choppers & prisoner transports in the airplanes. Nice testing Brother. Keep ur head down & wear orange hat eh👍🤠🌵
Just not good Ammo here, great video as always
Well done video! I like how you got right to the point without a bunch of BS.
Good job. Thanks. I hope you get back to health very soon.
Thanks. I am actually not even sick, it's just that something is wrong with my voice. I recovered from being sick like 4 weeks ago but it damaged my vocal cords.
@@GunSam but do you have taste and smell. I know a few that felt better within days but lost taste and smell for weeks. Kind of weird for both sides
In real world shootings for 40 caliber the 155 and 165 grain rounds have the best results especially in Corbon DPX and Winchester ranger T
Speer Gold Dot is good too.
You're grouping with the 40 was way better than the other 2
My friend you are a dang good shooter. This is a good test
Thank you for these ammo comparisons. I think that 40 would be more suited on big critters.
.40 hitting hard asf
what a great test, subscribed for making such a detailed and informative video on this ammo!
Liking that 45.
Looks like good ammo
My carry gun has this same ammo in 9mm. I wondered how good it was, now I know. But my carry gun has a 3” barrel, so I hope one day you can recreate this using shorter barreled handguns. Most of us aren’t carrying 5” barrel duty weapons.
Great video, I just wish you would have shown super closeups of the gel to see the full difference in damage.
Good and fair test. Very informative. Thanks.
Good video, thanks.
I’d like to see this test revisited with shorter barrel lengths.
I was wondering what was up. You seemed to be running at high speed, talking fast and moving fast, whereas you usually speak/move at a more moderate tempo. Great video. You are in my prayers. Hope you get better soon. Remember to drink lots of water, take a few vitamins, and above all get rest.
That nine was impressive in that long gun, really nipping on 357 Sig, the Winchester Ranger bonded in 165 or 180 in 40 in that comparison would have beat the nine overall.
What a weird result with the 40 S&W through the MDF. Must be clogging the tip for some reason?
Good job
Thanks
As a kid, the old man gave us honey mixed with a shot of whiskey, for a sore throat. As an adult ( age wise that is) a quart of orange juice and and a half gallon of vodka works well.
In the bare gel, they all looked the same to me. When you put the cloth and MDF, I was quite impressed by the 45 ACP. It looks like it expanded. In an autoloader, I would probably be going with the 9x19mm simply due to size and weight. It's easier to carry. It has more rounds. I'm sure a case could be made that you're doing more with the 45 than the 9. As for the 40, its failure to expand kind of kills it for me. I wouldn't even be carrying a gun that big, so the 40 would be coming out even slower.
357 Magnum is all u need as far as handguns 👌🏾😎
Good Shooting !!
Thanks
Hope ur OK sounds like you where struggling to talk take care of yourself my friend enjoy your videos
I have this ammo in 9mm , haven't seen it in 45acp , bass pro shop in my area always has it in 40SW, kinda glad I passed on it , the price was steep for a box of 20
I was looking for a review like this. Good work. I was thinking that: If hollow points were filled up with something, plastic or wax; would it do better? I am sure it would. The results from the .40 would have done something. I bought my only .40 S&W this year. It does hit pretty hard on steel targets.
Awesome video! I needed to know the info in it.
Appreciate this video, it was very helpful
I hope you don't have long term issues. It took my 11 year old son about four months to get his voice back. But he eventually did.
Awesome video with great info thanks so much....
I personally love the .40. If I ever change my mind I can just change the barrel.
thanks for the testing ...
Not too bad, I like the .40 in general and it did the best with bare gel, not so hot with the denim, but either way good video.
Good job, unlike others your comparing like weights. All medium weight for caliber. I’ve seen some compare 180 40 to 185 45. Those are not comparable.
45 Super (SMC), 460 Rowland
Great video very informative and thanks for sharing!
Thank you
Thats some hot 9mm for sure
I've been impressed with how well the .38 Special Plus P does against the 9 mm & sometimes does better than the 9 mm. I wonder how it would have done in the same test you did today. Would like to have seen .357 Magnum as well as 10 mm. But I guess you can't test it all at the same time.
Unfortunately it's rare to get the same maker and ammo line between revolver and auto ammo, and this is no exception. The .38+P, .357, 9mm and 10mm in a direct comparison would really need to be done with Critical Defense or Gold Dot as they are really the only current relevant ammo makers that do all 4 calibers with the same bullet technology.
That would be interesting to see
The 40 in this ammo never expands idk why watch other tests and I actually tested them in water jugs when they first came out but the 9mm usa ready is awsome.
really good test , I guess the mdf simulates a bone?
Nice vid
Thanks.
Everybody talks about 9mm being better due to an advance in technology giving better fps, expansion and penetration.. but the true is that rounds that used to be 1200-1300 fps seems to be watered down by several companies.. apparently they are lowering powder charge and relying more in bullet design, projectile materials and technology. But in decrements of the things that put the 9mm on the map over lets say .40
Great job 🙂
Bravo
Thanks. Another good and interesting video. Thanks for sharing. Take care.
Thank you, take care.
I like the .45 acp , you dumped all the rounds in the guts ! 😁
excellent content thanks
45 and 40 did great
45 ACP it is very good! Excellent vídeo
Thanks
Sorry to literally hear you're still being hindered by COVID. Hopefully you'll get over it sooner than later.
Thanks for another great comparison video... now go drink some tea with honey and rest.
That 40 seems better than the reputation ive heard about it
Excellent!
The test barrel for 9mm is probably 4" so I would expect it to exceed rated velocity.
True, but the test barrel for most .40 S&W is also 4"...
Very interesting!
Micely done as always.
Out of curiosity have you used any of the pistols for hunting game, small game, or vermin predation use?
Saludos desde Georgia, puedes hacerlo en Castellano o Bilingual, Gracias
Was wondering if you could test some different 9mm loads out of a glock 26 vs a 9mm keltec sub2000 so we can see what the velocity differences are, a lot of people have these two guns for concealed carry and home defense including myself, the liberty civil defense would be very interesting, thanks
So the board made the 40 hollow points into pointed rounds. Interesting 🤔.
40 is the correct answer vs human sized questions
I would choose the 45, to my eyes it looked to have much bigger damage path & you shot it very well, I'm an old guy, Big Bullet = Big Hole....Your voice was off track, but your aim was dead on...
First surfers!! 357 Sig g33 is king 👑
The 40S&W seems to be a very hot round, deep penetration, good for wood carry, big animals.
@@bobjones-bt9bh Look at it this way, if the 40S&W is what you're good with, or if it's all that you have just load it properly, Underwood, Buffalo bore, and Double Tap hardcast or bonded ammo. Thank you for responding.
The 9mm +p USA ready will expand nicely and consistently at 100yds
How do you know or what medium? Was this development for military similar profile to 1152 ball flat nose military round
I'm a little confused as well. I'm curious as to how you did your test. What firearm was used and what were they shot into and how many rounds were tested
@@biggunshandguns3687 medium was wild pig cadavers and water jugs (separate tests). test gun was g19. I tested an entire 20rd box they all expanded.
@@SuspiciousGanymede that is amazing. Any vids?
Smiles. Your worst group on steel was 9mm. Are you really worried about pass they?
Curious, have you tried other types of wood for your simulation to see if there would be any significant difference?
Get well Sam are you doing OK other than voice?
Thanks. Yeah it's just my voice for some reason.
This is the 2nd test I’ve seen this .40 cartridge bomb on ... interesting..
Can you do the Winchester defender bonded in 9 40 45?
Would be difficult to do now days with the ammo availability, but I have done them all already so you can see all that in these two videos. 1. ua-cam.com/video/4ACbYcfuBbM/v-deo.html 2. ua-cam.com/video/fQfYLGN5sGw/v-deo.html
How do you recon the .40 would do out of a Keltec Sub 2K? With the longer barrel the velocity would be higher maybe causing better expansion?
Carbines add only about 100 FPS more with .40's of this weight. Getting down to 135 gr you go up about 200 FPS.
👍👍
Snow recognizes as a hollowpoints by the ATF. So New Jersey cops 👮♂️ gonna be confused.
They didn’t load a good 40 cal at all! Like you said seems many manufacturers load 9 mm better than other calibers! Dam Shame!
Well just switched to .40 now regretting it? Lol. Maybe I just wont use this ammo :0
40sw was sliding in my hand...
...result: most accurate group
😂
You should be using ww5 or124 gr 9mm.;180 gr 10mm & 230 gr 45 as these are the most commonly used bullet weights fot self defense. All FMJ rounds
I guess I don't understand your comment. I am comparing specifically Winchester USA Defense ammo. These calibers and these weights are the only offerings in this ammo line.
I’ve never seen 124gr 9mm hit 1300.
I kind of regard the USA Ready as Winchester copying the Critical Duty/Defense without understanding what makes CD good. Winchester as a brand is in desperate need for product portfolio simplification and this ammo does nothing to help it
40 always wins
