Never understood why more brands don't use sweeping quartz more often. A lot of ppl shy away from quartz bc they don't like how the ticking looks. Sweeping quartz takes care of that, and annoying servicing costs associate with automatic watches.
@@JustOneMoreWatchI agree with you. I don’t care about the sweep at all. I get tired of resetting the time with my mechanicals. So I wear a CWC Sea Falcon and a Christopher Ward Valour for nearly everything now, both quartzes and neither of these sacrifice battery life for the visual sweep.
As a diehard quartz devotee, I REEEAAALLLY wish they would sweep. Especially mega-smooth a la Precisionist. Or at least like Seiko mechaquartz. I'll grudgingly deal with the 1-tick per second thing, if I must, for Eco-Drive. I'm DYING for the day of the Eco-Drive Precisionist Perpetual Calendar!!! If I had a magic wand, I'd add GPS calibration a la Citizen Satellite Wave.
@@JustOneMoreWatchfor me (as part of my 80+ watch collection including quartz, mecha-quartz, mechanical and automatic) the benefit of quartz, and in particular mecha-quartz, is about a few things 1) price - often a look/style for less, 2) grab and go versatility and 3) mecha-quartz eliminates the annoyance of many quartz watch hands missing the markers. As a 4th) on the side I do like the smooth sweep better than that of a plain quartz. To actually accurately time something I am using something else besides a watch, plus the downside of battery life is the cost when you have to replace multiple watch batteries at once.

I'm generally not interested in the tick-tick of a traditional quartz, BUT having one in a two-hander is perfectly acceptable and actually preferable to me. That said, I'm a huge fan of the relatively high beat-rate VH31 that Seiko refers to as their "Sweep Second Quartz Series". It's sweep-ish, but definitely good enough with 4 beats per second (bps) compared to 6 bps with the NH35. I have the movement in my Duckworth Prestex and it's terrific, especially since it reduced the price of my particular model significantly for minimal difference in "sweep"
I rediscovered a love of quartz when I purchased a couple of Elliot Brown watches last year. I then recently purchased a Bulova Marine Star and was blown away with the high precision quartz sweeping movement so much so I purchased the Jet Star a week later. I have one VH31 movement watch which is ok but not in the same league as the Bulova movement.
I have a little complaint , why does it always say "An error occurred when submitting. Please try again later."whenever i try to sign on your newsletter
I have given up on mechanical watches. What is the point? You can pick up a quartz watch anytime and it is telling the correct time. If you are going to produce a high-quality quartz (using the 300 ETA movements) sign me up!!
I think you’re right on the money with your predictions here, already seeing a few more micro brand quartz models over the last few months. Hope to see many more!
I had just commented about Korean-made watches and you were already making this! Incredible. I love the look of this and hope you're right about high-frequency quartz catching on. I do prefer a smooth sweep, but this looks pretty well aligned, which makes me okay with it.
Shame about Longines dropping the vhp, made for some cracking discounts, I got my vhp gmt on bracelet for less than £600. Victorinox are still doing the Inox in a couple of quartz variants.
How difficult would it be for micros to make solar quartz? My dream beater is a solar quartz, small seconds, applied/painted numerals field watch, but I’ve yet to find one out there to buy
Intellectually, quartz is super sensible, practical and accurate. Emotionally, I feel more connection with my automatic and mechanical timepieces, unless the quartz is really feature packed, or has a second display small enough that I could ignore the ticking. The sweep of an automatic or even a spring drive just looks so much better to me. I think if we had a sweeping quartz in one of these it would be a no-brainer.
I love a good nice quartz like that. I hope to see more of them! You will definitely be using the crown more than once a year though because every other month you would have to fix the date for the months that only have 30 days.
Curve ball, but how about a really short seconds hand if it ticks? If it does not reach the indices then it cannot annoyingly miss them. Maybe an inner unbroken circle so it has something to touch.
Mmmm. Ticking quartz? Not for me, however the model you have hits the second marks. Sweeping would suit me. My wife’s comments when she overheard you getting excited about the clasp “what is so special about the clasp? I wear a watch because I like the look and feel of it, not because of the clasp!“ female perspectives, does she have point? Oh she has a point, she has a say in our finances, she has a point! Nice watch though, even if it is somewhat overpriced like their other offerings. I loved their chronograph but again I personally thought it was about $4_500 dollars overpriced. Looking forward to seeing what Erebus offer both quartz and mechanical wise throughout this year Jody.
Hard to beat the Citizen A060 movements. HAQ, perpetual calendar and solar. Yes the watches they go in aren't bargains but the Citizen "The Citizen" watches like the Chronomaster are very much worth it. All that said if the design is right I would welcome HAQ from anyone. Just remember though that the design has to be right.
I wear an 80’s seiko 7548 quartz diver… the movement might not be high accuracy but they are a pleasure to work on and really high quality… I have two actually… not all quartz are equal…
I've been seeing an increase in high quality quartz demand and I love it. It took me a while to try quartz again after my cheap timex I had to sleep in a separate room to because of how loud the tick was, but after getting a Chronomaster I'm kind of just on the hunt for beautifully finished quality quartz watches. The lack of maintenance is just too good to pass up. EDIT: Also the bang for buck because of how much more affordable quartz is. Same finishing as an automatic equivalent for half the price or less.
About half my collection is quartz, including a few Seiko and Citizen watches, a Scurfa dive watch, a Mondaine (bought in switzerland) and a Marathon Navigator with an ETA F06 high accuracy quartz. My only true complaint with analog quartz is a second hand that misses the markers, especially where it lands right between the marks - so irritating!
Great subliminal messaging Jody for the next Erebus .... quartz is the next best thing, quartz movements are not all cheap, you have bought a gazillion of these movements , the Pittman price is reasonable ! So the next Erebus being a quartz at that sort of price is therefore on trend, quality albeit a quartz and the price is reasonable!! Fair enough looking forward to it👍😀
I generally only want quartz movements with a sweeping second hand, like with the Seiko VH31 movement. It's why I bought an Addiesdive AD2030 last year. Otherwise, if I'm going for a watch that I want to throw on and not worry about having to wind/set, I'd just get a digital.
Jodi so you've let the cat out of the bag with purchased 300 ETA quartz movements, my wish list of a Quartz would include Titanium, 41mm, date at 6 O'clock, display back, Duratek coating, short clasp (My ascent clasp is a little long) lumed of course. I'm looking forward to the email asking for my deposit :)
Heya Jodi.....In countries with daylight saving time you'll be adjusting it twice a year, which means your watch will never be out by more than 5 seconds. Nice!
It's a nice enough watch. I do not like battery Quartz movements though. Nothing against the Quartz bit it's the battery I don't like. Would like to see solar powered movements replace the nasty poisonous batteries. Come on Jody you know that evil battery is plotting your downfall, it will quit on you at a time that causes a life changing catastrophe, besides solar is free, what sort of Scotsman are you? 😉
I recently was swapping some batteries in some of my favorite quartz pieces and came across one in particular that housed a ETA G15-261 a fresh battery didn't bring it back to life so I had to order a new movement that cost me around Eighty Nine dollars it operates a completely retrograde chronograph watch that I consider one of my most complicated chronos there some fantastic quartz watches out there you just have to hunt them down Thanks for sharing as always my friend Be well and Big blessings
My go to quartz isn’t from a micro, it’s a Certina. It’s a DS-2 Precidrive chrono and I wear it when I watch racing or go to car events. I don’t get the opportunity to do that very often so it’s nice to have my go-to “car watch” set and ready to go for when the green lights go out 😁
I recall saying about a year ago that this trend was coming. Along with much more titanium, and i think red dials are gonna be the next big colour if they arent already. Picked up my orange Scurfa with a high accuracy eta movement in '24, wears amazing and on track for +4 seconds per year!
Is there a technology that allows solar, high precision and thermocompesated movements? Maybe in a diver watch? My gshock checks most boxes but I was hoping for something like gada or diver. Also what has to give for the second hands to hit the indices? The only thing that keeps me away from ordering quartz watches online is that fear if the second hands missing the indices. Nice review as always!
C'mon Jody. Do it. I'd love to see the excellent build quality, aesthetic and versatility of an Erebus in a quartz package. No date would also make it a true set and forget. Not sure on the availability of solar movements for microbrands but that would be next level.
Great Video Jody. Yes I agree, high precision quartz is high on my agenda for this year to add to my collection... been looking at the bulova lunar pilot and seville, marathon navigator steel, amongst others. The Pitzmann watches sound great especially with ETA quartz inside. I'd need a black/blue dial to make me purchase... I'm visiting Seoul in September this year so it would be good to pick up a black/blue dial Overture date whilst I'm there. BTW an ETA HP quartz Erebus Ascent would also be great 🙂
I experimented with making a VH31 based watch last year, and the biggest challenge I had was finding a movement holder that fitted. In the end, a Casio MTD1010 I’d used for parts was the donor
Over the last 2-3 years I kind of turned to quartz. They are just so convenient! They are accurate, reliable, you can save money on them and there are a lot of cool watches to begin with! Of course I'm still loving mechanical movements, but I just find myself grabbing a PRX Quartz or my Citizen Ecodrive more often than my mechanicals lately
The stepper motor can step the second hand however they want it to. I would like to see them set it to advance the second hand every 1/4 second. Mechanical feel with quartz accuracy
Jody youre spot on about quartz renaissance! I have many high end seiko quartz from the 80,s and theyre my favorite watches by far. Never understood the snobbery tbh. Thinner and more accurate.
Very nice. I really like the watch! So you purchased 300 Quartz movements…🤔. I have solidly started appreciating Quartz more. Thanks for the great review and looking forward what you may possibly do with those 300 quartz movements….😉
Enjoyed your review! It took me a minute to re-focus on the watch after seeing the t-shirt. Lol! It took me back to 1983 and my Datsun 510 I had in high school. Thanks for the flashback and great watch review as always. Cheers
Tissot made a 40mm dive watch with that movement for way cheaper. This clasp spanks Tissots clasp though (I have the Tissot). But the Tissot is such a delight grab and go watch that can take a beating (I'm a firefighter/paramedic). It's thin for a dive watch also.
Amongst the watch nerd community this is already underway for sure. I have quite a few pieces now, including a couple of mechaquartz chronos, smooth-sweep tool watches and a Bulova precisionist. If you have a box full of timepieces, especially with dates and more, it's nice to have them still working and accurate when you pick them up after a week or so. The smooth sweep movements make this a lot more palatable though. I'm sorry but there's still no way I'm paying $500 for an electric ticker. I'm really quite interested in a big moon complication (an ACCURATE one, not a date wheel in fancy-dress! I'm looking at you, Chinese brands...) or even a perpetual calendar that's powered by a quartz engine. I'll also add that if you're gonna go quartz you might as well go Japanese. The Swiss are hardly known for their prowess in this area.
I actually really like that celebration style dial. More companies should be looking at quartz both single tick and high frequency. Also love the shirt
I have been saying we need sweeping quartz (mechaquartz) for ages. I thought they were power hungry but there is plenty of room for more batteries and my wall clock works just fine! Second problem is they are always small!!
I am not sure if the price is in USD or Aussie $. Either way, I feel it is far too expensive for a quartz. AS an ex soldier, it is well know to most servicemen that the colours of Khaki and yellow denote HIGH EXPLOSIVE. During training at Kapooka every recruit throws 2 grenades. The first is a dummy grenade coloured blue. They think this is the real deal ,but it's just a training one to see if the recruit will flinch /drop it /fumble it or have a panic attack . If they pass this phase they are then re circled through with the REAL DEAL .The real explosive grenade is coloured Khaki and has a yellow stripe. After that phase is finished , they are informed on how to detect High explosive ordinance by the Khaki and Yellow colours. I do like both dials on the Pitzman but they are going to need to bring the price down a lot to pique my interest.
Quartz is the technological advancement in watches and superior for timekeeping over a mechanical movement. This one with its thin profile would make a great daily wear watch. It would be nice in a grade 2 titanium for weight savings and for most people, a non allergic material. Good review Jody.
I hope you’re right! Love it when companies make a high quality quartz. There are a few out there: Marathon, CWC, Hamilton, Vaer. But we need much more!! Christopher Ward took a chance with the Valour quartz chrono, and I hope that’s just the beginning. Let’s gooooo!!

I then recently purchased a Bulova Marine Star and was blown away with the high precision quartz sweeping movement so much so I purchased the Jet Star a week later. I have one VH31 movement watch which is ok but not in the same league as the Bulova movement.
The ETA movements are (good but) unfortunately not in the same league as a 9F or A060.
Recently picked up a Credor HAQ on the used market and I'm impressed. So, I do hope you're right about this trend!
It seems that accidental pressing of clasp button will be a trouble and lead to frequent change in size of bracelet. What is your take jody?
I think you’re right on the money with your predictions here, already seeing a few more micro brand quartz models over the last few months. Hope to see many more!
Will there be a quartz Erebus in 2025?
I don't think he bought 300 of these movements to modify his Seikos...
I hope so
lol this is a back door advertisement for that. Come on man. He didn’t buy 300 of them to compare second hands
Yep. A bit of a hint there I think! Should be good.
I've got one of those Boderry Landmasters you reviewed the other week. I'd definitely have bought a quartz version of that if it were available.
No solar? Why not?!!!
With daylight saving time wouldn't you adjust the watch twice a year?
Don't forget 28, 29, 30-day month rollovers. Pretty sure this one isn't a Perpetual Calendar.
Yes, you adjust twice a year unless you’re in most of the world that doesn’t use it.
Please take a look at the Bulova Super Seville! I am so impressed with mine. The smooth sweep, precisionist movement is the cherry on top!
So we should be seeing an Erebus high Accuracy Quartz GMT soon then? What better complication to be high accuracy?!!!!
We need a movement maker to recreate the Lemania 5100's functionality in high-accuracy quartz.
So whatcha gonna do later this year Jody? 😁
I'm excited to see if this trend comes to fruition.
I think he said in a previous video that Erebus is doing a Field and a Chronograph next. 🤞🏼
Were you right about your previous predictions?
Fair enough looking forward to it👍😀
why does no-one match the date wheel to the indices? that would help integrate it and make it almost disappear
An Erebus mecha-quartz piece next then ??? 🤔
I wish! But apparently Erebus is going with this same ETA HAQ movement. 😕
I generally only want quartz movements with a sweeping second hand, like with the Seiko VH31 movement. It's why I bought an Addiesdive AD2030 last year. Otherwise, if I'm going for a watch that I want to throw on and not worry about having to wind/set, I'd just get a digital.
Been wearing an Eterna quartz with small seconds for the last month. It is the longest I have worn a single watch for a long, long time.
Like the watch, the idea, not the colours..
.😢
Jodi so you've let the cat out of the bag with purchased 300 ETA quartz movements, my wish list of a Quartz would include Titanium, 41mm, date at 6 O'clock, display back, Duratek coating, short clasp (My ascent clasp is a little long) lumed of course. I'm looking forward to the email asking for my deposit :)
Heya Jodi.....In countries with daylight saving time you'll be adjusting it twice a year, which means your watch will never be out by more than 5 seconds. Nice!
Wouldn't the micro adjust button potentially be pushed when you are desk diving? Seems unlikely, but still it's a funny place to put it?
It's a nice enough watch. I do not like battery Quartz movements though. Nothing against the Quartz bit it's the battery I don't like. Would like to see solar powered movements replace the nasty poisonous batteries. Come on Jody you know that evil battery is plotting your downfall, it will quit on you at a time that causes a life changing catastrophe, besides solar is free, what sort of Scotsman are you? 😉
You are absolutely correct.
Nice everyday piece, flies under the radar, for me the star of the show is the bracelet. Great presence and wrist roll
BTW an ETA HP quartz Erebus Ascent would also be great 🙂
People who actually wear their watches already have plenty of quartz.
Hands down, 39mm is the best size for a watch.
Nah that's too much money for a pretty unremarkable-looking watch. Why not a high precision quartz with a sweep seconds hand?
I experimented with making a VH31 based watch last year, and the biggest challenge I had was finding a movement holder that fitted. In the end, a Casio MTD1010 I’d used for parts was the donor
Wow, this is definitely worth a closer look especially while I’m here in Korea!
I don't know- if you saw that on Ali how much would you pay for it? (with a lesser movement of course).
Maybe $80. And if it had a Mechaquartz movement, it would be worth more to me than with this ETA HAQ movement.
Jody youre spot on about quartz renaissance! I have many high end seiko quartz from the 80,s and theyre my favorite watches by far. Never understood the snobbery tbh. Thinner and more accurate.
Pitzman are always doing something interesting, keen to see where they go next
Very nice. I really like the watch! So you purchased 300 Quartz movements…🤔. I have solidly started appreciating Quartz more. Thanks for the great review and looking forward what you may possibly do with those 300 quartz movements….😉
Give me an Erebus Ascent with F07 movement and tiger eye dial for $550.00!
Well... $300.
Enjoyed your review!
It took me a minute to re-focus on the watch after seeing the t-shirt. Lol!
It took me back to 1983 and my Datsun 510 I had in high school. Thanks for the flashback and great watch review as always. Cheers
quartz is so underrated , bring on more premium sweeping quartz please
Tissot made a 40mm dive watch with that movement for way cheaper. This clasp spanks Tissots clasp though (I have the Tissot). But the Tissot is such a delight grab and go watch that can take a beating (I'm a firefighter/paramedic). It's thin for a dive watch also.
Yes! A high end quartz Erebus is coming! 🎉🥳👍🏻
There's no beating high accuracy quarts. I have a Hamilton, a Farer, a GS GMT and a Breitling among others and prefer them to mechanical in many ways
Tissot shestar 1000 has the ETA f06.412 movement I wonder what the difference is between ETA07.402 🤔
Thankfully, most of us are not in the habit of throwing grenades
Quartz is the technological advancement in watches and superior for timekeeping over a mechanical movement. This one with its thin profile would make a great daily wear watch. It would be nice in a grade 2 titanium for weight savings and for most people, a non allergic material. Good review Jody.
I hope you’re right! Love it when companies make a high quality quartz. There are a few out there: Marathon, CWC, Hamilton, Vaer. But we need much more!! Christopher Ward took a chance with the Valour quartz chrono, and I hope that’s just the beginning. Let’s gooooo!!
