    In this video I show how to install Schluter®-SHELF-E Corner shelf in a shower stall area. The shelves are made to be easily installed into the grout line as narrow as 1/16 inch without need of any special preparation, just insert the shelf and use silicone to lock them in place. I also show an easy way to use silicone to caulk all the corners and changes of plan as well as installing the schluter shelves.
    Silicone is the correct choice for your tile shower corners, tub joint or anywhere tile meets a tile in a corner or another type of material. You never want to just grout in your corners, this can create problems, at the very least you will have cracked corners, at the worst it will cause your tile job to fail. Silicone sealant is the correct choice, look up ANSI EJ171 for all the details. An alternative Siliconized Acrylic Caulk, but it is not as flexible and will not last anywhere near as long as a Silicone caulk joint will. Silicone is much more flexible and has a much stronger bond, however it is not easy to clean and can leave a mess if you don't know the secret how to get it done quick and easy. Unlike acrylic caulks, which can be easily cleaned with water, silicone caulk needs a bit more care and know how to get a professional looking clean even joint. In this video I demonstrate an easy method that with a little practice will have you caulking with silicone in no time. \

    This is one if the best youtube channels for tiling. I wish we had found your channel earlier before I took on tiling our tub/shower myself. I definitely did some things incorrectly but nothing severe. We are finishing up the project and I have been binge watching your videos. You do a great job on these videos. I definitely would have hired you to do my tiling project if you were closer. Central Ohio is a bit of distance from you. We have had several bad past experiences with hiring contractors in our area so we were hesitant to go through that again so we took on the project ourselves. In the end I feel we did a good of job as the contractors around here would have. Thank you for sharing your valuable expertise.

    Wow Sal, another great tip on how to use silicone and get a nice clean bead. I used silicone with the same glass cleaner when I did my master shower, but I didn't have that tool, I used my finger and didn't spray my finger first. It came out alright, a little messy, but not as clean as yours. Thank you for this great video, I know a lot of your subscribers really appreciate it. Thanks again for sharing with us.

      Exactly, Floor and decor has limited color of the silicone, any tile store will order it, and the one I used was in fact a matching silicone to the mapei grout I used. Problem is, most times the grout color is not known until the end of the job because people can't decide what they want.

    Looks like you hrouted the corners before silicone caulking them. I was told it was best to leave the corners clear of grout to avoid expansion or wall movements cracking the grout and to give a nice deep channel for the silicone caulk to fill and seal. What do you think?

      it acts as a lubricant to stop the silicone from sticking to the sides so you don't get smears. that is why you fill the joint first and then spray. If you spray first the silicone will not stick in the joint.

    Hey Sal, for years I’ve used tape to avoid the smears of the silicone. Even using translucent, there is often a very thin film of smear visible along both sides of the joint.
    Part of the reason for the denatured alcohol is so that the smear doesn’t stick? But I notice you need to tape the metal shelf? And I also notice there’s over-spray on the next section in the corners a few times and you don’t seem to worry the silicone wont stick properly there, does it just dry/disappear that fast? Finally- Does this work as well on textured tile? And between tile and acrylic tubs?
    Plan to try this method on my next bathroom reno contract, has two walk-in shower conversions in the house.
    Thanks so much for all your videos, I’m self-taught by necessity and your videos give me a chance to see a pro in action.

      the alcohol does dry very quick, it is alcohol, and it does work for most tile and tile to tub.

    • @GarwoodNick
      @GarwoodNick 4 роки тому +1

      Even with alcohol, silicone tends to make a haze on brushed metal finishes that is very difficult to remove, which is probably why Sal has taped off the shelves. I would tape them for that reason.

    • @SalDiBlasi
      @SalDiBlasi  4 роки тому +2

      @@GarwoodNick metal can be really tricky, best to take precautions when dealing with it.

    • @markoshun
      @markoshun 4 роки тому +1

      Thanks Sal and Nick. I haven’t seen those metal shelves in my area, but they are pretty slick. I do use the brushed schluter trims, so I’ll be sure to tape them. But if it’ll stick to the metal maybe it’ll sometimes leave a film on matt/textured tile and grout? That’s where I notice and don’t like it, where shiny silicone is over a matt tile. I think I’ll run a couple experiments. But even if I end up still taping the more visible/noticeable seams, the alcohol is going to help and speed things up. (‘Course I’ve always said that, and why I had to give it up years ago..)

    There is absolutely no need to apply anything on the silikone, if you use proper tool to remove excess of the silikone! If is used by people who use fingers or popsickle stick. 2nd you should make sure you choose the right shape of the tool. I preffer 45% rather then 1/4 of a circle (concave) due to strength.

    Sal, just a quick note. You are not getting a proper seal when you spray before you tool. I am a waterproofer by trade. More than 30 years of experience, and have been to school at Dow Corning, chemlink, and several other manufacturers of the sealants that we use today. That is possibly the biggest no-no in the business. However, I see people doing it all of the time. I catch my guys doing it sometimes as well. If I catch them again, well you get the point. If you are going to spray, it needs to be done after you tool your bead. therefore, you probably need to tape both sides of your joint first. I quit using spray at all 20 years ago. I can make a cock joint disappear with a tooling knife and a roll of blue tape. If you spray before you tool, the silicone is going to lay down on top of the area that you sprayed, and while it might adhere, it will not seal as it should. Many people confuse adhesion with seal. They are two completely different things. Substrate and sealant must be compatible for a proper seal, and when you spray, ISA propanol, denatured, alcohol, soap, and water, whatever you’re using onto the substrate, it is no longer compatible. Part of my job description is finding and repairing leaks. I spend a lot of time consulting on silicone, urethane, polyurethane, hybrid, etc. sealants, they are compatibility to each other and application techniques. While what you are doing, creates a nice looking joint, it does not create a proper seal. Maybe it will hold, maybe it won’t. but who wants to speculate on something like that. More often than not what I find leaks. They are a direct result of improper application, especially using a spray bottle before you tool your sealant. It can be OK in most circumstances to use a spray bottle after you tool, your sealant, but I don’t like that application either. With all of the new sealants available today. You need to make sure that it is OK to use any type of solution with it. Silicone is the absolute worst.

    • @SalDiBlasi
      @SalDiBlasi  10 місяців тому +1

      Well that was a lot of info and I appreciate the time you took to explain it to me, however the purpose of the silicone is not to seal, the shower is entirely waterproof before any tile goes up. The only thing the silicone needs to do is give a flexible joint and allow for movement. It has to look nice and move, no need for a seal.
