@@aidanh7527 10 years, actually. Funny enough DKC was released on the same year as this Game Boy game, which is released 10 years prior to Mario vs. Donkey Kong. And given the instruction manual to MvsDK says “Looks like Donkey Kong is up to his old tricks again”, I’m pretty sure the game is insinuating that this Modern necktie wearing DK is meant to be the same as the necktie wearing DK on the Game Boy games (including the Game and Watch Gallery series, which, funny enough, had the Modern DK on the title screen for Gallery 4, despite the Modern variants of Donkey Kong, Jr, and 3, having the classic look). Now, I’m not gonna deny that Cranky is possibly the OG DK from the Arcade game, but his game development bias towards modern game design could imply that he’s not the same Kong as the Game Boy one, giving his many rants in Donkey Kong Country, which breaks the fourth wall a lot. Arcade DK had 11 sprites for animation, whereas the Game Boy counterpart has 8x the amount, and Cranky has complained about how putting effort in presentation doesn’t make good gameplay. One of my favorite video games ever. Once you understand the platforming controls, it's one of the most fun and satisfying things, backflips, multi-jumps, and handstand flips feel so good to nail. This game alone is the reason why Nintendo needs to give us Gameboy on the online subscription service.
Honestly the game itself is packed with so much creativity and character its like they got told to make "Donkey Kong but with more stuff" and they just went crazy with it. Final World music is always something I love when replaying this game.
It's worth noting that this Mario is not Super (at least until Pauline gives him some juice at the end to hold up DK). That's why he dies in one hit and can even take fall damage. And he doesn't break any bricks either. Mario is kinda always Super nowadays, so that continuity makes me pretty happy it exists. And that's a huge coincidence, I beat this game last weekend and now this video. Amazing work!
Good observation. That's why in continuity, it makes sense that the DK Arcade series and Donkey Kong(GameBoy) takes place before Super Mario Bros series. Mario isn't completely powerful yet, Pauline was Mario's OG girlfriend before Peach, Donkey Kong and Mario were strong rivals, and it seemed Mario didn't know much about the Mushroom Kingdom until he discovers the pipe at the end of Donkey Kong 94 and when Mario and Pauline found out the Super Mushroom. I love how they put continuity details like that.
This is such a great game! I had it as a kid and remember having quite a lot of trouble with some of the later puzzle levels. Calling the mini Mario games a sequel to this donkey Kong game is the equivalent of if I said that Star wars battlefront was a sequel to Star wars battlefront 2
I'm not surprised. Super Mario Odyssey heavily reference the Donkey Kong Arcade games and Donkey Kong 94(GameBoy) a lot, which is interesting because for once in the main Mario series, Nintendo all of a sudden remembers "Oh yeah, Mario's real first game is Donkey Kong". New Donk City isa big reference to the City in Donkey Kong 94, Pauline(Mario's OG girlfriend) is the Mayor of New Donk City, and New Donk City is filled with various Donkey Kong references. And Mario traveling around the world must be a nod to Donkey Kong 94(GameBoy).
This is one of my favorite games of all time, IT STILL HOLDS UP TODAY, the music is amazing some of the best the gb has to offer, the controls are tight, the puzzles are cool and satisfying, the sound effects, all of marios moves and the gameplay is perfect, its all so good! This game kind of reminds me of Toads Treasure Tracker because both games are just compact mini stages where you have to do some platforming and solve the puzzles I feel Nintendo did the right move with calling the sequel (which wasn't as good) "Mario VS. Donkey Kong" I bet if they called this one that instead of just "Donkey Kong" it would have been way more known
This was my first Game Boy game. I had wanted a system pretty much the entire 1990s, and finally got my Dad to buy me one in '95 when the Play It Loud's came out
Something I realized is he’s not stuck between to pipes because he can’t physically leave he’s stuck there because his job is literally to walk from pipe to pipe whenever Mario shows up
Got this Christmas 1995 when I was 8. After clearing the arcade part I thought I had beaten the game. Took me MONTHS to beat the whole thing. This game really taught me to "think outside of the box" in terms of getting that key to the door each time - like dumping the key onto a conveyer belt that Mario can't fit through and then retrieving it on the other side before it vanishes back to it's original spot.
This game was my childhood. The last stage in particular was my favorite, just for the final boss alone. What annoyed me is that you always had to complete the previous stages in order to fight him again. 9-2 used to give me so much trouble because I mostly overshot the swing and got killed by Donkey Kong.
I have a copy of this game! It was really tricky and difficult in some stages because I had think of different and complicated ways to clear each stage. But I still had fun playing it and thankfully I was able to beat the game.
Grew up playing this game so much. I would 100% it about once a week. Also my father couldn't beat one certain level, so I was always being called upon to do it for him.
Easily one of my top favorite Game Boy games. Heck it is one of my favorite games altogether if I end up making a top list. I can say with confidence it is a game worthy of a perfect score, because it is fun and has balance. This game is generous with 1ups so it can give people a chance to make it easy or play without stakes. You can make it challenging by avoiding 1ups/Items that lead to Bonus stages, and the challenge rises with each stage. I also love the little details about this too! It really makes use of the Super Game Boy. There are two sound enhancements where Pauline will actually say "HELP HELP! ...which is pretty comical and the end creidts gets remixed. This game was truly meant to showcases the potential the Super Game Boy could unlock. Also one last detail because I can't stop gushing over this: if you make a new Best Time in a stage, Mario will take the time close the locked doors behind him. They really thought of a lot of details for this classic!
This game got tons of mileage out of it as a kid, I took it everywhere, was determined to beat it. My friend used to bug me to play it too so I set him up with his own save file and we'd fire up the Super Gameboy so I can watch him play. 100 levels felt like a long trek as a kid.
GB Donkey Kong was my first Game Boy game. I got it for Christmas with a Game Boy and loved it ever since. Definitely one I like to revisit, and that last world is just too much fun. Great review and thanks for bringing up some good memories!
I LOVED this game as a kid. Some of the puzzles were god-tier puzzle fun. Some of the most nostalgic memories on the gameboy for me came from Donkey Kong and Mario, and I played a lot of games for the grey brick.
I remember first playing past the barrel levels and discovering the world map madness that was the actual game. It was an amazing game in my childhood back in the early 2000s :')
Even when you play a good game, you still provide some satisfying comedy! After seeing looking at the footage, I may have to give this game a try for myself!
Loved the video! Honestly one of your best, it was refreshing getting to see a positive review, specially on such an underrated gem. Great work Goomba!
Retro DK’s personality actually fits reasonably well with Cranky Kong. And if the modern Donkey Kong is the same person as Junior. then maybe he was reformed when he realized what an absolute simp he was. Better go chasing after banana than babes.
You know, I might have a series of Gameboy games you'll be interested in: The Game & Watch Gallery games. These games feature a bunch of Game & Watch games to play all at your leisure, but with a few twists: You can select between Classic or Modern versions for each game; the former having the exact same visuals and sound as the LCD original, while the latter gives it more flair with extra animation and making it more "Mario" in presentation. While I never played most of this series myself, I have played the 4th game on GBA when I first got mine at the age of 4 (oh how time flies...) and I had a lot of fun! You can collect Stars by playing really well in both versions of all the games featured in every collection to unlock more extras such as new games and such! Heck, I remember wasting my free time away by watching those bite-size sprite animations in G&W Gallery 4 where you got to see things like a Big Boo play bowling with Waluigi pins for example! Also, its soundtrack was surprisingly pleasant to listen to; whether it was the Modern Games' songs, or that incredibly relaxing Museum theme, there was quite a bit to enjoy both gameplay wise and presentation wise! And while there was a Game & Watch Collection for the DS, it was only available for Club Nintendo Members in 2008 (rest in spaghetti, never forghetti) and doesn't have nearly the same charm in its presentation when compared to the GB/GBA titles. I guess if you wanna compare, it's like going from Sonic Mega Collection on GameCube to Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection on PS3/XBox 360, sure you get more games to play, but some of that childhood magic gets lost in the transition, you know?
I remember this being quite reasonably priced at the time it was less than the other game boy games well that’s what me dad said when he brought it us one weekend lol

We came very close to getting a GBA remake of this game with a level editor but then it instead morphed into the game Mario vs Donkey Kong (there are some photos of the prototype), which in japan at least became one of the few games with E-reader exclusive levels (though unlike Super Mario Advance 4 the data wasn't included on the card but rather an unlock instruction as the levels were already on the game)
It kills me when people try this game and stop before clearing the first few stages, assuming it's just a Donkey Kong arcade remake.
Exactly
I thought that at first as a kid, but I was quite surprised after I beat the fourth stage.
Yeah! That was a great surprise!

@@bland9876 But they came after and Lonely Goomba did call Mario vs Donkey Kong a sequel. However, I didn't refer the puzzle games as actual sequels.
Mario travels all over the world to save someone?
Take that Mario Odyssey, Mario's already explored the entire world before you
You are everywhere!
This game kind of reminds me of Toads Treasure Tracker because both games are just compact mini stages where you have to do some platforming and solve the puzzles
I feel Nintendo did the right move with calling the sequel (which wasn't as good) "Mario VS. Donkey Kong" I bet if they called this one that instead of just "Donkey Kong" it would have been way more known
Donkey Kong was such a good game. I got it because I thought it was like DKC back in the day...was a Christmas
present and I loved it
This was my first Game Boy game. I had wanted a system pretty much the entire 1990s, and finally got my Dad to buy me one in '95 when the Play It Loud's came out
One of the best content creators ever. Keep going and doing your content.
Heh. I fondly remember this game kicking my ass in levels later on to the point I wanted to rage quit. I eventually did. XD
It's nice to see you happy for once. I actually love this!
TheLonelyGoomba I have to agree with you this is a great Gameboy Game
Something I realized is he’s not stuck between to pipes because he can’t physically leave he’s stuck there because his job is literally to walk from pipe to pipe whenever Mario shows up
It’s been a plot point before that he literally can’t leave though, he’s stuck there physically
@@supercamborg4218 But different episodes show he goes out to places such as the dump
@@SuperBatSpider true, I guess how stuck he is varies from episode to episode
THE GOOMBSTER UPLOADED? TODAY'S GONNA BE A GOOD DAY
GREAT review of this great game. Hope you do end up getting around to Mario Vs Donkey Kong next!
pog
I remember playing this game thinking it was just a port but no! This game was really good!
This is actually a good classic I swear know one even knows this even exists
That game brings back so many good memories!
The sequel on the gba was my childhood
Got this Christmas 1995 when I was 8. After clearing the arcade part I thought I had beaten the game. Took me MONTHS to beat the whole thing. This game really taught me to "think outside of the box" in terms of getting that key to the door each time - like dumping the key onto a conveyer belt that Mario can't fit through and then retrieving it on the other side before it vanishes back to it's original spot.
I've always loved Donkey Kong on the gameboy. Great job reviewing it Lonley Goomba you're always my favorite Nintendo UA-camr
This game was my childhood. The last stage in particular was my favorite, just for the final boss alone. What annoyed me is that you always had to complete the previous stages in order to fight him again. 9-2 used to give me so much trouble because I mostly overshot the swing and got killed by Donkey Kong.
Honestly I don't think I've ever played a 2d platformer that's more responsive than dk 94
Gotta love how Mario go through all of these crazy places just to save a girl.
Mario is the biggest simp!
And it ended up not working out between them. Poor Mario, he may be the most famous guy out there... but is he truly happy? x)
@@VonFirflirch Well at the time, Mario and Pauline were officailly a couple. That's until Mario met Peach of course.
I remember this game from my brother. He downloaded this game on the Nintendo E shop on his 3ds XL. Really nice twist at the beginning. Love it.
1:30 - On the NES/Famicom, Arcade and other home versions, that was the last level, but on the Game Boy, this is where the fun really begins!
For a 94' GameBoy game this felt like a trip through the world
I have a copy of this game!
Been watching you for about 5 years now and I'm really happy to see you're still uploading great videos!
Wow, it's been awhile since this channel was in my suggestions feed. Great episode, glad you're still making them!
I'm glad UA-cam has finally recommended my video to someone again. It's been a long time
I started watching you in elementary, I'm applying to college now. Thank you for releasing videos all these years.
This game I also own and have fond memories during my character and also own Mario vs. Donkey Kong.
This game got tons of mileage out of it as a kid, I took it everywhere, was determined to beat it. My friend used to bug me to play it too so I set him up with his own save file and we'd fire up the Super Gameboy so I can watch him play. 100 levels felt like a long trek as a kid.
I really want to play this, hopefully gameboy games come to Nintendo Switch Online.
GB Donkey Kong was my first Game Boy game. I got it for Christmas with a Game Boy and loved it ever since. Definitely one I like to revisit, and that last world is just too much fun.
Great review and thanks for bringing up some good memories!
You might only upload once a month, but your videos are always worth it.
Just rediscovered this channel and it is still gold
Such a underrated channel
Loved the video! Honestly one of your best, it was refreshing getting to see a positive review, specially on such an underrated gem. Great work Goomba!
Retro DK’s personality actually fits reasonably well with Cranky Kong. And if the modern Donkey Kong is the same person as Junior. then maybe he was reformed when he realized what an absolute simp he was. Better go chasing after banana than babes.
Mario VS. Donkey Kong is born.
I love that your still making these! you’ve come a long way my dude.
I just realized THIS is probably the inspiration for the final Boss in DKC Returns.
I love this game still to this very day. Specially the music. Still hum the theme from the Forest world (World 2) pretty often. ❤
Oh wow. It's so neat to see the inspiration for the Mario vs Donkey Kong game series. Until the Mini Marios took over anyhow
Nice to get a review of a good game from you! Been a fan for a long time :)
I remember this being quite reasonably priced at the time it was less than the other game boy games well that’s what me dad said when he brought it us one weekend lol
That music slaps hard
Why this channel remembers me of old UA-cam videos from 2005- early 2013
8:17 I actually love that jingle
this channel brings me back my first youtube video was tlg's rockem sockem robots
This was the first game i ever completed as a kid. Was over the moon when i finally beat DK!
This game is horrendously underrated and i never really see anyone talk about it. Such a shame. Awesome vid goomba.
i only recently found your channel and so far likeing it and i gotta give you credit your dedicated to being a goomba ive seen alot of channels that had a similar identity of game characters and the like and they usually change it to something else but i went down to the bottom of your videos list to see how long youve kept up this goomba identity and i saw 7 years thats a long ass time
We came very close to getting a GBA remake of this game with a level editor but then it instead morphed into the game Mario vs Donkey Kong (there are some photos of the prototype), which in japan at least became one of the few games with E-reader exclusive levels (though unlike Super Mario Advance 4 the data wasn't included on the card but rather an unlock instruction as the levels were already on the game)
I would totally love to hear Lonely Goomba's take on Link's Awakening
