Volcano Watch 2023: The Town Of Grindavík Evacuated, Eruption Probable In Near Future
Вставка
- Опубліковано 10 лис 2023
- On the night of November 10, the Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management announced the mandatory evacuation of the town of Grindavík due to a possible magma intrusion beneath the town. Approximately 3,700 residents left the town within two to three hours, with many staying with friends and relatives in other parts of the country, while some finding shelter at emergency aid shelters opened after the evacuation was announced.
The Icelandic Met Office states that the likelihood of an eruption is now significant.
The Reykjavík Grapevine’s Jón Trausti Sigurðarson provides an updates on the situation as of the afternoon of November 11. He speaks with Red Cross Disaster Management Officer Áslaug Yngvadóttir Tulenius, and Grindavík Parish Priest Elínborg Gísladóttir,
The last time a town in Iceland was evacuated due to volcanic activity was in 1973 during the Heimaey eruption in the Westman Islands.

This reminds me of the agonizing wait in the Phillippines for Pinatubo in the 1990s. Just as the geologists started to wonder if they'd called it too soon, the mountain blew its top. Patience saved a lot of lives. And thank you for the interviews in English and Icelandic to help us keep touch with events.
I have an idea....... Let's build a town on the old out flow of a volcanic fissure. 😂 I have low levels of compassion for people that build on volcanos, riverbeds and tornado alley.

So much stress and uncertainty to date and yet they’re still waiting to see what will happen. Thinking of you all! Thank you for the updates Jon
It's impressive how well organised everything seems. Every body is calm enough and acts reasonably.

We were just there a month ago, drove right through Grindavik. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone there, such nice people and a quaint little town. Please be safe! ❤
It looks like a pretty town.
That lady made me cry. So sorry about their situation, I get the grief and trauma of this. Lots of thoughts to everyone affected. I also hope for rescue of all the animals left behind.
I lived for more than a year in Grindavik many moons ago. I'm hoping for the best for everyone there! Stay safe!
I feel for the people of Gryndavic. I hope everyone has homes to go back to.
It’s Grindavik! At least get the spelling right!

I'm pretty sure that's the town that smelled of fish when I was there earlier in the year ?
I’m so impressed by the great sense of Icelandic people for their community. Áslaug from the Red Cross expresses it very well, the solidarity amongst Icelanders, also the elderly woman being interviewed. I hope everything will pass with as little damage as possible. Hopefully pets and livestock left behind will be saved somehow, too.
I have great respect for the resilience of the Icelandic people and I know that even in the worst of times they come together and help each other specially in like this, a time of need! Good luck every one.
Thanks for this. And we all help each others and take care of them.
And we know that the scientists and the National Security, and rescueteams always work in advance to be ready and have the right reactions.
what about the sub-humans in PALESTINE 🇵🇸.....no empathty ??🙄
A tough situation for sure but it is really nice to find a people who look out for each other, come together in a crisis and not demanding they have 'right's' and being difficult. Best wishes and hopes for all of you there!!
Much love to Grindvíkingar.
Thinking of you all and hoping you are in places of safety when this thing goes.
Watching with interest from Scotland.
Much love. x
I hope all these people will have a home to return to once all is said and done. I can't even imagine what they must be going through not even knowing if they will have a place to go home to or not.
Even if things settle down, and the government lets them go back, all they'll be able to do is pack everything up and move to another town. If it doesn't erupt now, that volcano will come back and finish what it started unannounced, later.
Thank You Jőn. Another great though sad interview. Our hearts and prayers are with the people of Iceland, especially Grindavik and surrounding areas. The Red Cross and locals are doing a wonderful job. Hopefully, the town of Grindavik will stay safe, as well as the Power Plant and Blue Lagoon. I hope that all of the people of Grindavik and their animals are safe, comforted and comfortable and that the infrastructure remains unharmed. God Bless beautiful Iceland and its lovely people. You are in our constant thoughts, hearts and prayers. 🙏🇮🇸💕.
Thank you for the updates Jon , So much excitement for the Old folks in Retirement . Keeping the People in prayer .
I live in a place that can have very serious hurricanes. The destruction of homes and towns can be truly devastating and can happen within a few days notice with the actual storm impact being unpredictable. I only say this because I sympathize so much with the people of the town. The stress of not knowing when or if, and whether you will have a home to return to takes a serious toll regardless of what happens, and of course the worst is also very possible. It is a testament that you have such good monitoring, and at least all residents can be in a safe place with adequate supplies for now. Can only send my hope for the best for everyone.
These interviews bring home the human side to the situation, very difficult but everyone is safe and that is a big fact to remember. Like La Palma in the Canary Islands a little over a year ago this event will pass, and lives will be rebuilt. I visited Grindavik & Blue Lagoon in 2018, still remember the town and area, what is happening is most likely a repeat of the past. Thank you to Grapevine for hosting this, hopefully you will follow the events as the unfold and keep telling the human story well into the future.
It must be very scary not knowing what will happen 😟 I hope they will be able to return.
Thank you for reporting on this. Praying for all concerned (from Canada). God bless you all

Do the shelters take pets as well? I hope so. When people are about to lose their home and belongings, pets can be a real comfort.
Sending good energy and thoughts to the people of Iceland and Grindavik from Nevada, USA. ❤
So glad to hear the evacuation has been successful and that so many people (and pets) are safe. Such a tense waiting game that mother earth is providing. Wishing the best outcome possible. It certainly looks fantastically organised and very well thought out. Love and prayers to all. From Australia.
Many animals are still in the area and no one is allowed in but a few professionals. I don´t know what the plan is for all those animals!
@@asbisiWhy the owners weren't taking the pets along?
@pollenayeung5815 its hard to round up sheep horses outdoor cats scattered about. Folks are going in now to do that
@@pollenayeung5815 Read Pamelaadam9207´s post. You don´t have your horses or sheep at home with you. Cats go their own ways too. Also they tend to hide when they are afraid.
This is a very complicated situation. Some animals have been rescued today, but for instance, no cats came when their owners got a few minutes in the town to call for them. I think maybe they are hiding or wandered off to safer places.
Wishing you and all Icelandic people all the best! Stay safe, stay tuned!
I hope Grindavik and the lue lagoon are spared....

Thank you. I was in Iceland one time and enjoyed my short visit very much, especially the helpful and good Icelandic people whose society is one of the last that remains intact in this crazy globalized world. That is evident in this report showing the old Norse-speaking Iceland folk after 1,000 years retain a sense of community, are organized and competent. God bless and protect the vulnerable as they cope with the angst. Hoping for the best in the North Atlantic.
As always, your reports are excellent, trustworthy and truly professional

I feel so very sorry that the people are having to deal w/this but I am also hoping that they did not have to leave their pets behind & were able to get them into shelters as well.
There are a lot of pets, horses, sheep, cats, rabbits, parrots, doves, chickens e.t.c. left behind. No one is allowed in - I hope there is a plan to rescue all the animals - there are so many.

Being on the Island, Icelanders have more than enough experience doing this kind of thing. Same with Japan, more or less, But Japan is much larger than Iceland. This local lady seems almost on the verge of Crying, I hope she gets the comfort she needs. The thought of not only loosing your home, but also all of your possessions, the memorabilia from her life, pictures and special items from family, friends and children must be tearing her apart. I really do hope that the lava finds a way to go out into the bay or further out and doesn't do any Damage to the town, there is a lot of livelihoods dependent upon the bay and the ability to go fishing from the protection of the cove. I remember decades ago when the Eldfell volcano erupted on the Island Heimaey, the lava wiped out several hundred homes and nearly closed of the Harbor for the fishing town on the Island, but they used sea water to cool the lava and slow it down, saving the harbor and also the livelihood of many on the Island, thou many homes were destroyed, that eruption lasted the better part of six months as I recall.
Wonder how the whales feel when they are being harpooned? Iceland can kiss my azz.

Thanks Jón and Art. What a terrible situation for all involved. No wonder everyone evacuated so quickly. The ground was shaking almost continuously.

Hopefully they got all their pets out also! Sending prayers from Western, N.Y.
They didn´t. There are thousands of all kinds of animals left behind, horses, cats, rabbits, parrots, doves, chickens, sheep E.T.C. No one is allowed in to get them. I hope authorities have a plan to get them out - but it has to be fast, there is no one there to feed them!
At least they didn't say "Evacuate this very instant." There was enough time to go home and grab a few essentials if needed. But it's terrible to imagine people losing their homes.

Sending blessings to all the inhabitants, human and animal. Thank you SO MUCH for the update! I'm over here in the NY Catskills biting my nails and hoping so much that the lava finds its way to the surface in the kindest way possible. I have lava chunks from the 1st two eruptions by my computer (thanks to the Reykjavik Grapevine). But this eruption - woah! 😳😲 Thank you, Red Cross, for the update and assurance of human safety and as comfortable as possible. And thank you to the animal facilities trying to make things better for the critters. Do you know if there is any possibility to retrieve pets and livestock left behind in the scramble to human safety? Or is it too dangerous at this time to risk it?
Pray for the pets, livestock & their families!!
Hello from North Jersey to the Catskills. We have the nail-biting duties here too. I was stationed in Keflavík when I was in the Navy, and I remember how seriously the locals treated these events. I'm not too worried about the people other than the trauma of evacuating in an emergency. My heart goes out to the pets and livestock with no idea of what's happening or why. I will keep in touch through the Red Cross international contacts to see if and when we can help.
No, I bet they won't let anyone through and animals will die. Hours have gone by, no earthquake, but they won't let people through to get pets and livestock...I would lose my mind. When do we get to make decisions for ourselves??? I would go get my animals!!!
