I'm so used to watching cars struggle this test that to actually see something make it look effortless is a shock.
hahaha same! and that too from a vehicle built between 2004-2009... like damn!
@@rohant it's a Disco 4. Last model was 16MY
Yes but the system is identical to the one originally on the Discovery 3. They didn’t make any real major changes to it.
@@Johndeerefan198 again not quite right. TR2 was brought in 2013. So agree that the car was an updated Disco 3, it had a new gearbox (6sp to 8spd), engine (gutless 2.7 to the 3.0 tdv6) and terrain response 2 system. Drive a 3 and 4 back to back they feel like much different cars.
@@reecedrury4145 drove. same car. Better insulation, engines and better interior obviously, but apart from that a Sport, Disco 3 and Disco 4 drive basically the same. Terrain Response 2 was introduced to Disco 5.
Yup this is a whole different league then most awd systems. Also I like the fact that you really used all the different modes! Thanks and greetings from the Netherlands.
Yes, different league - Discovery has two locking differentials.
@@4x4.tests.on.rollers really? I thought it's just Traction control braking freespining wheels
@@skoda110 Traction control came into action only during the test when one front wheel had traction.
@@4x4.tests.on.rollers I had couple of discoverys. Disco 4s have only central differential lock and very few rear as special add. Traction controll based system is very sophisticated on disco 4 but drivetrain is fragile to cope if used offroad to often. Try decent disco 2 which has cental lock and see. It will work the same. Good videos to watch, thanks
@@skoda110 I don't know Land Rover systems well, but this one definitely has rear diff locker, it is easy to see in the video.
I forgot - traction control light was blinking only in the test when one front wheel had traction.
Thanks!
Ladies and gentlemen thats how proper off roader looks like
Yeah looks like it's in a parking lot
Some would classify the Disco as not a "proper offroader." Meaning 4x4 vehicles with manually lockable diffs. Which makes it all the more impressive, because it outperforms a lot of "proper offroaders."
Couldn’t agree more, Audi can learn something from this video how a proper 4x4 (Quattro) should work!.
Thank you, thank you, thank you. YOU ARE THE BEST.
THIS is how every AWD system should work.
bernard_hossmoto This isn't AWD, it's 4WD. There's a difference to it.
@@brandonczwThe traction control software makes the difference, it would work on AWD cars as well.
No it’s all wheel drive all the wheels drive all the time
@@tyrell133 4WD per definition has a transfer case and reduction gears, which the Disco has and a normal AWD car does not. But as I posted above: It does not play a role in this test.
@@bernardhossmoto Actually most of the AWD cars no not have the needed power for traction control to work. You can clearly see this in the other videos. Most of them will just drop the rear, and consume the power on brakes.

This is why these are so popular with farmers or those who live in the country side where the roads don't get plowed that much in winter. Expensive to repair as well.
My LR3 and Range Rover are way cheaper to repair then my Jeeps. People just think they are expensive to maintain.

Yep. I've got one, I've had a Disco 3, replaced by a Freelander 2 (very reliable, very good in the snow, but not a Discovery) then went for a Shogun....I put up with it for 6 months before getting a Disco 4. I adore it. Can't wait for serious snow....
That was brilliant, perfect results!
Finally! A proper 4x4 :)
Very good the Land Rover, I think the best one which you have tested until now.
Yeap, so far the best, but it is hard to compare it directly with others cause it has two locking differentials.

Thanks, greetings from Poland!
Great test! It proves that disco 4 is the best mass produced off roader in the world!!
Thanks :-)
You've got to be kidding me it's the most unreliable brand on earth
Yes, it’s very unreliable.
And yes, it’s the best mass production 4x4 truck
its a piece of junk and so is this crap video
Colin Kensley I highly disagree with you. You are really over-exaggerating when you say it’s the most unreliable brand on earth. It’s not the most reliable car like a Toyota Corolla or a Civic. But Land Rover and Range Rover makes the most comfortable, best looking, and best off-roaders out there. British cars in general are known for not being as reliable as for example Japanese cars. And if something breaks the parts can be kind of costly. Modern Land Rovers and Range Rovers are as boring as a any modern BMW, or Mercedes. No character or soul. In my opinion the Disco 4 was the last “real Land Rover” produced. And every enthusiast would buy any model except the ones that came after the Disco 4. It’s about community and being a part of a family. I come from a family that has had 2 classic V8 Range Rovers, a Discovery 2, and we are currently 2 years into ownership of a Discovery 3. My dad still has his series 3 Land Rover 109 that he bought back in 1993. I think British cars are more reliable, better designed, more quality focused, and better overall compared to American “plastic fantastic” cars. If you look at Tesla, they are supposed to be a “luxury electric car brand” I personally think they are a failed attempt at trying to be as luxurious as Audi, BMW or Mercedes. I have driven a couple Tesla’s, and none of the body panels are aligned right. There is no sign of any quality. Everything is so tacky and “gimmicky”
Daaaaamn pretty cool ! my favorite Offroader ! Ty so much
Damn this is wild. Looks like it sends more power to the rear wheels.
Matches the expectations
I’m going out on a limb here but I think the LR4 Or Disco 4/5 is probably the best 4x4 in the world. No other car provides sophistication and ability. Maybe the Land Cruiser but it is old and drives like a shed and has an engine from a canal boat.
Shoguns are similarly....rustic. Didn't dare take it round bend at more than 55mph,because the front end understeered in random spurts, and the rear oversteered in random spurts, occasionally these would coincide which was terrifying. I can four wheel drift the Freelander 2 and the Discos comfortably on the extremely rare occasions where I hit diesel on the road, but not the Shogun. Totally unpredictable, and therefore bloody dangerous. I didn't dare drive it in heavy rain let alone snow. The Discos are brilliant regardless of the weather or road conditions, the feedback is incredible, absolutely love them.
Agreed! I am delighted with the Disco 3. Had it for 2 years. Great car! Drove it once in 1 meter of snow. Had it in off-road height and put it in snow/gravel/grass mode. It’s like a god damn tank, only had to lightly push the gas to make it move through all the snow.
That's a bit harsh on Toyota land cruiser .they say if want to go further take a landrover but if you want too come back take a Toyota .. don't know if they drive like a shed or the power of a snail ..but landrover discovery 4 does have a sexy look about it .. I'm on a limb now does Toyota follow what landrover do !!!! So I couldn't lived with Toyota they years behind landrover.. that's why Australia love them ,SO BORING .hope they will improve them 😀
Thank you!

Howard P g wagon hold my beer
Rock crawl was the best mode on any given circumstance
Rock crawl fully locks 2 diff locks and encourages engaging low range by default; it will not need time to lock up in response to loss of traction so it seems to be the best in this experiment.
As a Discovery and a Subaru owner, the Subaru does this with ease too. The Discovery is great in deep mud, water and ruts and the Subaru is better on snow and ice and wet fields etc.

If only the engine stayed reliable as it aged. It performs way better on crap tyres than more agressive 4x4 on agressive tyres. Also, wiring …. Have had a 110, a 2 door Range Rover (RR) v8 (converted to diesel), a 4 door RR Tdi , and currently a discovery and nothing beats the discovery. The 2doorRR came close on good tyres. Am counting down the days till the crank is in two half’s (2.7 TDV6) and have converted to coils because of wiring gremlins (with regret, as air suspension was stunning).

These vehicles are also unreliable, they fall apart as soon as you drive off the lot. The worst vehicle there is. Horrible. Get a Toyota 4-Runner then we will talk.
chad haire this video tests 4x4 prowess by seeing how the systems and diffs react to loss of traction at corner. This LR Discovery has outperformed every other vehicle tested... what are you talking about tyres for??? If the driver was going properly off road, then he could change the tyres... you seem bitter, over a UA-cam video. I pity you. As for reliability, Toyota is more reliable. So what? This video is about 4x4 systems... there are other videos you can watch that will talk about reliability. What a strange individual you are. By the way, a Toyota drives like a tractor compared to a LR or RR... so what you gain in reliability, you lose in refinement, comfort and luxury. But again, that’s another video.
@@chadhaire1711 I don't care if it is reliable or not. Talking about garbage video is personal attack, not factual comment about the car.

Does this discovery have the additional rear lock differential fitted? Or just the middle differential only? Thanks.
Yes, it has rear diff lock.
Can you please do a g63 amg or any of the g wagon, after seeing this video I wanna see how does that g compares to this
I think G doesn't have auto-lockers like Discovery, they're manual. But even with all diffs open it doesn't have any problems with such tests. I don't think I can find any G for the test, but there are roller vidoes of this car on YT.
The best car in the world.
so did you have the locking diffs engaged?
You can only choose driving modes. There are auto lockers, driver can't lock the diffs.
hey man, what stuff is that had been used to test this terrain response ability ? where i can buy that ?
Custom made.
Just a question (off topic), which system do you prefer more for cars between 1996 - 2010, Torsen in Audi or Haldex in VW? This is a question for conditions like snowy uphill (no drifting etc.) because I'm planing to buy a used Audi or VW diesel with awd. Sadly Audi doesn't have a Torsen T2 with a manual rear diff lock like T1...
Depends on model, Audi is also using haldex. Imho torsen will be much better, especially in older cars when haldex systems were not advanced. However newer haldex systems have quite sophisticated software and they work really good.
@@4x4.tests.on.rollers so for example if you had to choose between Audi A4 1.9TDi 2004 (or Passat) with Torsen T2 and VW Golf V 1.9TDi 2005 Haldex gen3, 2007 Haldex gen4..... which one would you choose as the better choice for bad conditions?

@@4x4.tests.on.rollers Interesting. Thank you. Only such an test can reveal such detailed informations👍
P.S. like most modern cars too much driving mods in my opinion. Rock mode and general mode would be enough I think 😅
pppppice of cake
No rear locker in this one I would say. It is not very fair to say that the reason why Disco pulled off so easily is due to lockers, when you duszaniespokojna just think it has a real locker because of the result. Most of the diesel Discos do not have rear locker. It is very rare on diesels as it was an option, but was standard on V8 5.0. That is why you find more of those in US. Most of the buyers that bought SE or HSE version of the Disco (this car is SE or HSE because it has 3.0l engine, S on MY10 is 2.7l), were not planning to go places where you need a rear locker. Disco without a rear locker can do more than most of the drivers are willing to put it through.
The reason why I doubt that there is a rear locker is that, the rear lock is not active on general mode. Yet there is same kind of jerk in wheel spin as it has on rock mode. Second reason is that other video has similar jerk in it and it is an older Disco 3 and it would be very very unlike that in those two videos that are available, both would have lockers. The car behaves identically ua-cam.com/video/2Vg_qEKRWAY/v-deo.html
Only way to tell on MY10 and MY11 if there is a rear locker or not is to see the rear diff, or check with VIN number from the database. The 4X4 info screen will show the locker regardless if there is or not, and the driver will definitely not notice the difference within one meter drive.
Interesting. However there are some attempts where there is almost zero wheelspin, while the jerk is characteristic for auto lockers. It doesn't happen when only front wheel has grip, much more wheelspin.
@@4x4.tests.on.rollers Disco rear locker is not like classic pneumatic locker, that is on/off type. Disco has adjustable limited slip locker, where "servo" motor adjust the lock from 0-100%. Driver has no control over the locker, the terrain response system is adjusting the locker automatically and takes into account the terrain and the setting that driver has set, all the drive control signals and vehicle motions. Only in rock crawl the terrain response system presets the low gear, off road height and pre-locks the rear. Same time in rock mode, there is small pressure on breaks that reduces the free wheel spin and sudden swings that might occur while driving over a rock.
If there would be a locker, it would be quite hard to realize since the action would be sort of "as your thought". The traction would be where you want it before your have time to miss it.
But as I said, we cannot be sure, without having the VIN or seeing the rear diff.
@@jyrimanty5078 That's exactly what I meant by auto locker. And that's why sometimes there's minimal wheelspin. And that's why traction control light was blinking only during the test when one front wheel had traction. It was almost the same behaviour as old Tuareg with auto lockers.
I will try to get vin number, is there any website to check this info about diff?
@@4x4.tests.on.rollers You can check all major and minor features (options) from topix.jaguar.jlrext.com You need to register to the site and then enter the VIN number. The VIN number on a car is visible through windscreen in front of driver, no need to open the doors or anything.
It would be very interesting to know if there is a locker or no, and if there actually were a locker, then if you could great to find another one without and compere those too. I would think that Land Rover enthusiast would HIGHLY appreciate that comparison.
Discovery......the best 4x4
No it's just a proper 4x4 😊most real 4x4 would nail this test.
The best? LOL hell no. Not even close.
It just does a somewhat proper job on the basic stuff... if it works... when it works.
How will act D3 or D4 without rear difflock?
Probably like it did in normal mode. You can tell the rear diff wasn't locked in all the modes
It would be fine. As an example the LR3/4 in rock crawl mode applies a slight amount of braking to all of the wheels which allows the traction control to lock up spin within 5 rotational degrees.
