I actually grew up in similar surrounds in the inner city of Sydney. I would hear Chinese people talk all day long and I always thought they were arguing but they could’ve been saying “I’m Gay” for all I know. They would have like a full on market garden with all weird Asian vegetables on their tiny little balconies. It was like living in Hong Kong.
What's really incredible about this podcast is that there's one funny character and one supporting character, and it's incredibly good. Adam isn't even on the friggin map, but nick is so funny. Even funnier, is the fact that his stand up is trash
Black and Milds were the shit when I was in high school. Those wooden tip ones were so classy!!! I believe it came in a red wine flavoring. Dank as fuck for high school age as well as filling the void of weed dealers not messaging back about an eighth of dank. Those plugs were for sure gay actors.
I also love Nick’s mentioning the romanticism about immigrants because after watching the sentiment fest that was Minari, I thought to myself: they used to portray immigrants as gangsters who do illegal shits, now the migrants are hardworking heroes? I’m not saying immigrants should stick to do illegal things, I am part of the community after all, but it’s my personal enjoyment to laugh at heightened reality than mostly made up sentimental shits. Even today, my extended families are skirting around the law to make some extra bucks on the side, despite immigrated and got their citizenship for more than 2 decades. It’s just how it is. People work hard, but that doesn’t mean they are not totally stealing or breaking the law to make good bucks.
I have stayed in hotels in Chinatown on the bowery and good god it was shit. Holes in walls roaches in toilets etc. Lovely stuff. Also, here wales there was a chinese takeaway near one of my workplaces and every time i went in there, there was a little chinese kid playing MMOs on a computer almost under the desk. Every time. Incredible.
Man I really feel Nick's nostalgia for those days. I had a similar trajectory to him, lived in a lot of shitty places with a lot of great people. Now I live in a great place but the people aren't the same. Like I don't think my current roommate would pretend they didn't know my to the feds, but I know for a fact both the Chinese and Ecuadoran family I stayed with would have. I dunno, the solidarity in poverty is really something else.
