People have kept asking me "when are you going to do a video on the MiSTer FPGA Amiga core"...and seriously I meant to earlier! But things got away from me...and it took a hot minute. But here we are...a full core setup guide, review and "games to play" list for the Minimig core on MiSTer FPGA...because it now supports Amiga CD32! Amiga CD32 on MiSTer FPGA is awesome news!
and if you need any MiSTer FPGA review videos, MiSTer FPGA guide videos, MiSTer FPGA vs emulation videos or MiSTer FPGA alternatives videos (the MiSTer FPGA clone boards) check the playlists!
Big thanks to LIMI for making me make this video haha
I asked, you answered...and I try to listen :) Of all the requests for new content on the channel one of the most frequently asked for videos is a series on the Terasic DE-10 Nano MiSTer FPGA hardware...so here it is! Retro gaming goodness.
On this episode of our MiSTer series we are going to be talking about the Minimig core in FPGA, which in part is an Amiga 1200 computer, the Amiga 4000, partially the Amiga CD32...and lesser Amiga retro gaming PC hardware than the 1200.
Questions? Comments? Just leave them below and I will do my best to answer each and every one of them!

Owning a Mister feels like having Christmas several times a year. This, N64 completion, etc. It’s amazing how much great stuff these wonderful folks make for all of us. I grabbed the files yesterday morning, excited to try it out with my kids this weekend. Thanks for the tutorial!
Yes every month you get a few presents
The Mister killed all my desire to have a large collection of retro games. Now I am just about having controllers that are original or good reproductions of the old ones.
I’m never get rid of my hardware still but that’s me
Same here, I no longer require having a real PS1, just memory cards and OEM controllers in good shape.
@VideoGameEsoterica I get that completely. I just found myself not playing them and would rather they go to someone that will. I still have some, just not walls and boxes of stuff anymore, was a bit relieving in a strange way.
@shibbybypass5028 for me it’s like a reference library but I know I’m the odd man out
@VideoGameEsoterica nah just different ways to play. There is no right answer.
Just got the N64 core going, now this. Man I'm glad I got a MiSter
It keeps getting better and better
Superfrog is actually drinking bottles of Lucozade, which is a glucose energy drink here in the UK that sponsored the game, and probably explains his hyperactive speed!
I still think he’s just drinking haha
I read somewhere that he was original going to be drinking Newcastle brown ale before they changed to lucozade.. So you not completely wrong
Haha so I was right!
This is brilliant, I love Super Star Dust, Simon the Sorcerer, Liberation (Mainly the impressive intro), Microcosm. Nice to be able to play now, not via emulation. Thanks for the update.
Happy to update everyone :)
I love the CD32. I had one in the 90s and I loved it as an Amiga fan. All of the Core Design games such as Universe or Bubba 'N Stix have a fantastic CD soundtrack. Universe is a very good game, too. There are some true gems on the CD32. This is a fantastic addition.
It’s fun to have it on MiSTer for sure. Such an obscure console
@@VideoGameEsoterica obscure from an American perspective
Well based on the sales numbers I’d just say it’s obscure hardware
@@VideoGameEsotericabecause a judge thought two criminals invented the blinking cursor. They were unable to sell this console in US... In Europe it sold well .. could had been the commodore salvation. Apple allmoust died in the period. Imagine... No iPhone...
The Amiga wasn’t well-known in the U.S., but it was a big hit in Europe (especially Germany and the UK) and the Middle East. Back then, PCs were mostly weak Intel 286 office machines that struggled with games compared to the Amiga.
PCs had basic beeps for sound and no CD drives. The Amiga 500 had great stereo sound, great graphics, and you could hook it up to your TV.
It was also great for graphic design and music production. Later, they tried to turn the Amiga into a console with the Amiga CD32, but that didn’t really catch on.
Funny how that happens. Same with MSX / PC88/98 and FM Towns in Japan
Awesome! Looks like I'll be updating mine this evening :) Thanks
Enjoy :)
Super happy for this. I sold my CD32 to pay a bill around 2008. Regretted it ever since.
Well now you can play again :)
Highly recommend Roadkill, it's my fave CD32 game, one of the most underrated 16-Bit+ games of all time and imo the best game on Amiga CD32 along with Banshee and Alien Breed Tower Assault.
Tower Assault has been my fav so far
It is impressive improvement over first and second game with branching maps, You can play it in many ways and still discover something new. @VideoGameEsoterica
Check out "Yo Joe!" "Battle Squadron" "Banshee" "Turrican" "Lionheart" "Skidmarks" "Hired Guns" "Wings" "Moonstone" "The lost Vikings (Due to the soundtrack on Amiga)" "Disposable Hero" "Walker" "Cannon Fodder" and "Donk!"
I’ll give them a shot
The CD32 is still a missing piece in my collection. So having this is a great way to play the games. As far as I read, the only thing Amigavision actually added was the CDDA Support, that was missing from minimig. You could play CD32 before, because Amiga1200 was already there, but now it is much more convenient. I just love how still systems keep pouring in on the Mister. The next exotic device will be the CDi and after that maybe FM Towns, Apple Pippin, PCFX, Daphne and some arcade cores. I know, at least FM Towns and Daphne are somewhat in development.
I’m hoping for all of these to eventually make their way to the mister. Would be incredible.
Overall, you are mostly correct, but some clarifications:
- We didn’t add the CDDA support, gyurco added it to MiST, and zakk4223 ported it to MiSTer
- What we did add was a user-friendly setup with a shim program called cd32emu that allowed you to run CD32 games on the Amiga 1200 back in the day
Also, don’t forget the king of multimedia consoles still needs a core - the CDTV! SimCity just isn’t the same without the SimCity rap soundtrack!
We need PCFX and 3DO
Me too
@@amiga_vision Thanks for the clarification and insight. And yes, the CDTV is another blind spot in my collection, so that would be nice to see too. And let me emphasize how awesome the launcher is. I did not know of it before and had a great time using it on Mister with my CRT. Cheers
if you want to check out Amiga classics, then I’d suggest Turrican 2 mainly for the music. Also: the Amiga version of Desert Strike is the best (especially withe CD32 pad hack when starting the game)
I’ll look into them
FINALLY!
I've been looking so forward to this.
I may have not been paying enough attention here, but can we also boot the BIOS?
CD32 has the best BIOS ever (Yeah. Better than Gamecube, better than Sega CD, 64DD, PS1. It's above all!💪).
CD32 was actually my first video game console ever.
Although many aspects of it is janky, it has a very solid library.
And I love the CD audio the CD32 versions have over the regular Amiga versions of the games.
Pirates Gold! here I come! Arr!
This is not a CD32 core yet - although does lay the groundwork for one. This is essentially an Amiga 1200 running the games that work on it, which is most of them!
See below :)
If it works it works!
That Amiga CD32 controller gives me the heebie jeebies 😱
It’s a very weird shape
Town With No Name, here we come!/s
Haha I have a capture for next weeks news episode
That’s unfortunately a CDTV game, but I hope we can get that some day!
super frog looks fun!
It is! If the Amiga ever had a mascot platformer, this is the one 😄
It’s a good time. Classic 2D Platformer
I say James Pond. Because I love that janky little fish
It's not, it's sub-Bubsy quality by a distance, all those Amiga platformers were. But according to Amiga owners at the time every platformer with a cartoon character that ever came to Amiga was apparently a gift from god and better than Super Mario World.
Less rose coloured glasses, more rose coloured delusions, when ex Amiga owners get all teary eyed nostalgic about this, Magic Pockets and Harlequin. They were all awful. There are at least 400 famicom platformers that never got released anywhere else better than that.
Unless you want to just check out the tech, you know like playing Outrun on the MSX to see what they did with it, avoid, it's not something anybody that ever touched a console controller before would play over anything else.
Based on that footage of Alien Breed 3D I'm not sure if that's running exactly as a stock CD32 would; AB3D is choppy as hell on a stock A1200 and runs identically, albeit with CD audio, on CD32.
Despite the low resolution this is running pretty buttery smooth in comparison, which would have required an after-market expansion like the SX32 which would add a 68030 CPU and additional "fast" RAM.
I’ll ask the amigavision team why that would be
@@VideoGameEsoterica I mean, I can understand that beefing up the specs might make certain games more playable since it's a free upgrade in FPGA.
I've done a bit of testing with settings on Analogue Pocket and just adding fast RAM to the base 14 mhz 68EC020 machine gets rid of the bottleneck that causes the terrible frame rate on the stock machine and makes AB3D a lot more playable, though it's nowhere near as smooth as shown here.
Adding fast RAM to a CD32 would also require an aftermarket expansion (SX-1?) however so having this as the default setting seems odd, especially given it might render other games such as Syndicate so fast as to be unplayable.
Correct, the Amiga MiSTer core performs on the level of a 68030 at 50MHz. You can restrict it if you want, but any game that ran on a faster computer than the Amiga 500/1000/2000 generally runs well on any setup that is faster, and WHDLoad containers also patch games to deal with this. So that’s why we don’t restrict it, and why it runs faster than the 020 in the CD32. Even having Fast RAM in the A1200 would massively speed it up, and most people at the time added some additional RAM to their system, so there is no “standard Amiga setup” past the A500.
I really wanna see the Jaguar, CPS3 and Sega Model 2 on Mister. Sega Model 3 and Dreamcast are probably not possible yet but I'd love to see those too
Don’t forget 3DO!
almost one more year gone and no cps3 updates :/
@@VideoGameEsoterica 100%. Definitely getting that Killing Time remaster
@adrianrodriguez-iz1wr hopefully soon
Same. Obv! I’ll be in the game somewhere too. Look for me
Fury of the Furries - I adored this game, but it's the soundtrack - one of the greatest game soundtracks period imho. ElMobo, the composer, is still around on bandcamp and is open to a chat as well.
Fantastic game and fantastic soundtrack!
I’ll have to give it a listen
You would say that 🤣
@@VideoGameEsoterica You know I have impeccable taste
This is good news. My CD32 feels like it is on its last legs.
They aren’t getting any younger that’s for sure
I'm totally clueless when it comes to the Amiga. I did play with a Commodore 64 back when it was new a few times though and enjoyed it quite a bit.
I am not super well versed either
Try super cars 2, speedball 2, gods, wings, oil imperium which I can think of in a minute.
Who has the link to the other Amiga video of this channel?
Here you go : MiSTer FPGA DE10 NANO Amiga Minimig Setup Guide, Core Review and Games to Play! Its AMAZING!
ua-cam.com/video/c8nLrsktvwk/v-deo.html
Its just a Amiga 1200 with a CDROM drive
I picked mine up second hand for £20 ages ago, came with about 30 games and 30 demo disc as well.
Id say the best game on Amiga had to be The Chaos Engine.
Basically yes
The name's Pond. James Pond. 🍷😎
Terrible games but damn it I love them
I'm hoping someone brings over CPS-3 and Neo Geo Pocket Color someday. However, I know next to nothing about any of these things work, so I'm happy either way 😊
NGPC is probably happening in the next weeks - CPS3 will likely eventually happen, but it’s a lot of work for very few games compared to something (IMO) way more interesting like PGM
NGPC very soon
@amiga_vision PGM > CPS 3 no matter how much hate I get for saying PGM is the better platform
When I press B on the run screen a box pops up "please insert volume saves in any drive". I am basically stuck at this point. my screens match your exactly. Any suggestions?
Let me ask the expert. Haven’t seen that
From the makers: a few games exhibit this bug. File a report on GitHub so they can look into it
@@VideoGameEsoterica Thanks for helping!
👍
Done everything textbook, but try as I might, I can not see the CHDs when I open the core. I have them in the correct folder and used the suggested pack. :-(
Did you change the drive type like I showed in the vid? They won’t appear until that’s done
@@VideoGameEsoterica I did yes, but I have just realised that I was trying to mount the wrong drive. All sorted now thanks. :-)
I had a feeling :) if the drive settings aren’t correct the files just won’t appear
Thanks for the guide, but I'm a little lost on the part where you said to copy files to the bottom of the .ini file on the root of MiSTer. Where is that document you're referring to, that we copy from?
It’s on the Amiga vision website. That text I highlighted.
Ah, I found it under Documentation on the site. I had to dig a bit; maybe it's just me? Haha.
Haha zero worries
Are we getting any closer to being able to emulate the A1200 with an 060?
Not sure on that. Amiga isn’t my huge specialty knowledge base
So like, do I need to hold my controller upside-down to enjoy this Amiga CD32?
No you need to slather it in dark amber
Is there any way to get CD32 to work on the FS-UAE version as well?
I’d have to ask
@@VideoGameEsoterica No need to go out of your way, unless you happen to stumble across it. It does say on the AmigaVision site that this feature is currently "MiSTer only". I suspect it could be done by tinkering with FS-UAE directly, but couldn't find any concise instructions for it. Thank you for a great channel!
Any tips for mass converting games to CHD?
I mean there’s a good complete CHD set out there so I wouldn’t even bother :)
CHDman is a little app with three batch files attached, you copy it in your folder, double click on it, and it converts all your bin/cue files, and all the ones with multiple sound files as like (track 01) etc into complete .chd files. Covers some other file types but leaves all the single, already compressed files as is (ie .cdi and .gdi.)
It's worth running in all your CD based emulator folders (as long as the emulator supports .chd files of course) just for the size reduction. Some PS1 and PS2 games were reduced by like 84%, most by over 50%, in size just converting the bin/cue to a .chd You'd literally be doubling the amount of Roms you can store on your hard drive/USB stick/magnetic tape spool.
**NOTE - I can't believe I added magnetic tape spool as an option because I pressed / instead of . and didn't want to delete the / it would have been less work **
What's the difference between the minimig core and amigavision?
Same core but amigavision sets it up out of the box differently
Why aren’t these cores included in the update all?
They are. This is an extension of the Minimig core, and runs on it.
It’s included. It’s Minimig. This is a pivot
hey there do you think The hyper Neo Geo 64 deserves its own core. do you think the mister could handle it?
Yes deserves no can’t handle. Thats my guess
Amigas are not PCs, but Home Computers. PCs are generally only IBM compatible Computers. A Mac is also not a PC.
PCs is just the de facto term for computers for most people IMO
Can someone please explain how to do on analogue pocket?
Maybe I’ll do a vid in a week
Just my luck. First game I try is incompatible (Fire & Ice).
I see on the compatibility list (URL is shown in AmigaVision when you highlight the CD32 option).
Akira, Cannon Fodder, Battletoads, Chuck Rock 1&2, Last Ninja 3, Lotus Trilogy, Power Drive, both Sensible Soccer titles, Simon the Sorcerer, Wing Commander.
This CD32 emulator (which seems to me is how they’ve solved CD32 here) really needs some work if I’m gonna count this as CD32 working on the MiSTer.
Edit: The “CD32 emulator” is v107.18 and dates from 18. Aug. 1999 lol.
I don’t think we’ll be seeing a new update any time soon😂
Yes it’s not 100% of the full library yet but they are always improving on it
Does the CD Audio work?
It has for me
Yes!
Some good game selections there but..... Rise of the Robots!!???
Dudddeeeeeeeee
Haha I love jank. You know that
I threatened to come over there and give him a stern talking to if he showed that in the video, but of course he did 😄
@@VideoGameEsoterica that ain’t Jank man….
That’s utter Sh1t£ LOL
You can’t stop me! You aren’t my manager
@@VideoGameEsoterica I absolutely will make sure you never get hired at another UA-cam channel ever again! Don’t you know who I am?!
You need to load up a game on the CD32 called Donk! The Samurai Duck. The intro song is an amazing trip back to the 90s. The actual game is crap, though. This is unfortunately a recurring theme with the Amiga, where a game will have a great soundtrack and play like crap.
lol sounds if it up my alley
A marsupial is a mammal 😂
But the pouch? Don’t they get a sub genus or something? Lol
I live in the UK, and grew up around the Amiga and it's fans, and it was pathetic how much they fanboyed over it compared to SNES and Megadrive, worse than Playstation guys do now.
They would say Sonic and Mario were rubbish games for babies with cartoon jumping, then play god-damned Super Frog which was a) completely shit, b) you had to press up to jump because it only had ONE FIRE BUTTON like the 2600 (and you'd have to press the space bar on the keyboard on the shitty version of R-type to shoot your force bit out) and c) ONE DROP OF WATER IS DEATHLY FATAL, to a frog, apparently. And there's leaky roofs everywhere.
Also, I like hearing the music AND the sound effects, at the same time when I play games, and not having to choose which one of them I want on a 32bit CD system.
They would literally try and convince people that Rainbow Islands and New Zealand story were some of the best games ever created by man, because they were the ONLY two arcade conversions that weren't worse than the NES versions, and ruined by only having one fire button, and they badly needed a win. Magic pockets was NOT better than Super Mario World, Body Blows wasn't better than Streetfighter because using six buttons is confusing, so holding fire and tapping one of the eight directions was so much better.
Literally, apart from the two Turrican games, Alien Breed and about five decent shmups, there is nothing on the Amiga that is not awful compared to every other console version available, or just awful janky Eurotrash games to start and end with, apart from Rainbow Islands and New Zealand story of course.
The two greatest games ever, better than Sonic and Mario, according to Amiga owners at the time.
I mean people defend what they love. No surprise there
Fighting spirit is a nice janky fighting game to try 😅
You might have been trying to speak a little too fast, made up a new console at 2:20!
"Amiga CD Thoo"
Just my accent and pacing
Any chance it will come out through update all?
Not that I am aware of
LOL AMIGA
Nothing wrong with Amiga :)
I’m not from Europe so I’m not very familiar with that console
As he says in the video, it’s mostly good for expanded versions of good Amiga games. As a game library and a console, it never got its time to shine since Commodore went bankrupt months after its launch.
Same. But I’m learning
A sad and all too common tale
