  • Install a dishwasher like a plumber! Today I'm replacing my dishwasher and I wanted to bring you along to show you how to remove your old dishwasher and install a new one! To be honest, this isn't a very hard job, but if you don't have a good understanding of how dishwashers work, or are installed, it can be difficult.
Also, knowing the right way to install a dishwasher can save your having to pay for installation from the delivery team who may not even know how to install it.
    Good luck!

i'm by no means a plumber but I do appliance installation for a living, to keep the counter top from happening, you can lean the dishwasher back, lower the legs down in the front, then slide it out. I always always always run the feet down before removing to avoid this kind of thing.

That reaction to counter top going was so genuine that you can't even do that a second time.

The part when he ripped the counter top was hilarious. I had to call my boss and tell him about it. I made the same mistake when I was removing a dishwasher almost a year ago. It's all good Roger!

This is the kind of thing I subscribed for. I'm an apprentice doing mostly rough ins but I want a leg up on set outs and remodels... thank you.

Local 130 State Licensed Master Plumber Chicago here, retired after 35 successful years, two new knees and a hip. The countertop accident happened to my boss when I was an apprentice. I used a Formica repair kit F343-7889 to make an invisible repair. Was $12 in 1978. WisonArt has a similar kit. Ever since then, I would always raise the front levelers first or even use an angle grinder to remove them if I had to. You are very knowledgeable an I respect your experience.

I think that strip is to prevent steam from softening your particle board countertop and turning it to mush. I would have made the electrical connection with the dishwasher out of the hole and turned up so I could easily access the electrical box on the dishwasher. Also, I would have put a high loop in that drain line since you are not running an air gap. Great video.

Sorry to correct you in one point. The aluminumfoil strip is to prevent steam going into the wood of the counter top. Therfore it should be placed as close to the front as possible. It is needed for people that open door regulary while the machine is still hot.

This is a great video Roger. I have never replaced one but now I know what to expect when I have to install one. Thanks for all you do.

It's foreign to see a dishwasher drain installed without an airgap. Did you high loop the drain? Man do I envy all that room you had in that cabinet. Around here, there's a drawer in the bottom , and a farm style sink above, then an insta hot and water filter crammed into that sucker, and of course the v8 big block version of a disposal ( effing designers). To top it off we often replace the airgap with a soap dispenser post inspection. A mechanical jungle! Guess I'm getting better at plumbing yoga if you will.

You should always shut off the breaker before removing it. That cord can still carry power to the electrical box and if there is any break in the skin of the wire you could get hit. I know it’s only 115v but it can still hold you.

Also remember to leave some slack if you're hard wiring it in. I have encountered so many old units where the dishwasher was originally wired with just enough romex to barely reach the unit, so you can barely even pull it out far enough to disconnect it.

Not gonna lie, subscribed just because of the whole countertop segment. Way to go turning a mistake into entertainment. Lol.
