I like it a lot too, but the context for it is so not the right one: The emperor: Now Luke, KILL HIM! Luke: I won't, because i'm a Jedi! Yoda 1 day earlier: To become a Jedi, you must kill your father
“The greatest teacher failure is.” After a failed marriage, losing my home and losing my dream job all in the same year, theses words have never been more true. I’ve reflected and am in the process of making the changes needed to grow as a person! Powerful statement by Master Yoda!
Wow man, I'm sorry! My trials have been much smaller but almost wrecked me. I'm also making changes to my life right now. Good luck in everything your future holds! And ya this is a powerful message that can bring everyone a little hope.
Folks can love or hate the Sequels, but I will never hate Star Wars for bringing people together like this conversation here. I too have failed this year, I let the pandemic outside consume me with fear, and I did not use the time in isolation to build myself, thus relapsing into depression. Getting back up is hard, but I am. Cheers to you Erik and Johnny!
Me too... It really did take on a new significance that I don't think anyone including George Lucas would have predicted. But it's true. He really did become afraid. Afraid of the dark side, just like Master Yoda and Mace Windu before him, and in doing so, helped strengthen the dark side. Though in a much more direct way. I truly do love his story aec. It was was really amazing. And his acting in the Last Jedi is FAR above anything he ever did as Luke before. Such a nuanced performance. Truly masterful.
The only thing is that he was afraid of Vader, of palpatine and of the empire, he was afraid of losing his friends and then afraid of Vader’s threat to turn Leia. He has faced the darkest of fears when he began to strike down Vader in anger and cut off his hand. And saw his own future if he didn’t stop himself then. And then he boldly fearlessly turned around and threw away his lightsaber in the face of the emperor.he already conquered these things. Not to say he would never have fears again but even in Kylo, he wasn’t as strong as Vader or palpatine or at least not at the time he was going to kill him. So that would’ve been a rehash of his fears for himself or facing Vader yet he helped save anakin and stopped himself from going to the dark. To make a re-arch of this was not right. Or better yet explain why and how. Besides a “possibility”, he had no reason to turn on his family. In empire he already acted brashly to go save Han and Leia and he suffered the consequences of trying to run too quickly headlong into something like that. Again he already learned this lesson. And for Yoda to say he didn’t listen made no sense because he did. He began a new Jedi academy. He began a new generation of Jedi. He strongly declared “I am a Jedi , like my father before me.” Episode 6 was the RETURN of the Jedi. I agree his acting and doing his best was amazing. And yes the Jedi before became arrogant after 1000 years. But again he would’ve gathered and learned this lesson from obi- wan and Yoda. In what is now considered legends eu, when his nephew jacen became Darth Caedus, he didn’t want to kill him or become fearful again and then shut down. He helped eventually turn him back even though jacen would be forever scarred, it was his choice,. Kylo/ Ben also had a choice. It wasn’t Luke’s fault. Again Something similar was explored in the books, when Kyp Durron came under the powerful dark side influence from a holocron of the ancient with lord Exar Kun. He then took the sun crusher and destroyed solar systems and killed tons of people and yet he was still redeemed with help from Luke. I don’t get last Jedi at all. And as sentimental as this tries to make it and as much as this tries to help make it better by making some sort of sense of it, it doesn’t make sense. At least to me.
Yoda may or may not have been going off premonition, but it was true either way. The Force and conflict between the dark and light side has led to scary consequences from all who were involved, from killing children, your best friend, or your student. The Force is terrifying in a way simply because of how quickly it can ruin lives, despite its potential for good. Luke is right when he says the Force never belonged to the Jedi, they simply learned the most about it and in a way, feared it more than anyone else.
It's all ObiWans fault ... The unsung hero he was a victim and probably had the most dreadful life of all Essentially he is the chosen one in my eyes There is no saga with out him You can take Kenobi out of Star Wars but you can't take Star Wars out of Kenobi
@@jackravo7333 Obi-Wan lost a master, a lover, a friend and a brother, yet he never faltered to the Dark Side. He rarely lost a battle and trained two 'chosen ones' in his lifetime. Obi-Wan is *the* best Jedi, but that's just my opinion.
Obi Wan was the chosen one all along. You guys didn't know that? I knew when I watched "A New Hope" for the first time in my life. Look... Qui Gon Gin had a vision that said he would be the one to teach the chosen one. Qui Gon, died before Anakin was even accepted as a padawan, and never trained him. Qui Gon took over Obi Wan's training, only after having that force-vision. Soo.... 1+1=?
@Dreadnought 1 Well not entirley, Ben made his choices he was conflicted yes but again in 8 he made his choice once again by killing snoke. So looks like he knows where he stands.
"I will NEVER turn to the dark side" "I am a jedi, like my father before me." That's why Luke is so awesome. He had all the reasons to turn, but he never gave up on his father.

The Toy Sensei I don’t think the quote is about students growing beyond their masters. I think it’s about students growing beyond challenges. In other words the burden of a master is that if their student doesn’t overcome challenges they face in life, then it’s the masters fault.
"We are what they grow beyond. That is the true burden of all masters." It's heartbreaking to hear Yoda address the audience. We grow beyond these characters, even if they helped form us in our youth, and in our loneliest moments.
Also a man is the sum of his burdens. A backstory about Yoda should be next after the one about OBI Wan Kenobi. "For the most part, we need saving from ourselves."
@@josephbenuzzi159 Yoda only lived up until Return of the Jedi. Even after the prequels and the shows, it was very unlikely we'd see him again. they drank the kool-aid yea because the prequel trilogy and the original trilogy were anakins story, as well as him having character development in the Clone Wars Show. Unfair to compare them. Kylo was still a good character imo.
"Pass on what you have learned. Strength and mastery. But weakness, folly, failure also. Yes, FAILURE most of all. The greatest teacher, failure is." Really hit me hard.
I’m not a fan of what R. Johnson did with TLJ, but this has helped remind me how relatable Luke really is. Experiencing extreme dark times in this life are inevitable; and only thru love, patience and humility can we chose to preserve thru them. Thank you Mark Hamill for portraying one of the greatest hero’s of all time. Thank you HFP. This was absolutely beautiful.
Mark Hamill loved Luke so much he tried so hard to keep him in character even when he was questioning the direction of his character. For that, Mark Hamill, I Iove you so much
I was thinking the same thing!!! Mark has been rather vocal on his disappointment with TLJ, yet his performance was superb in everything he did. He put everything into his role...even if he disagreed with it. His devotion is astounding. I am so happy that he won The Walk of Fame Award a couple of years ago and honestly numerous and well deserved awards before and afterwards. This guy is amazing!
Harrison Ford wanted to kill Han at the end of ROTJ, yet I didn't saw a single complain about it. Mark speaks his mind and now: "OH LOOK, HE AGREES WITH US, HE HATES THE MOVIE. BUNCH OF FANBOYS". Pretty sad if you ask me, well, some people will never change.
That’s the one and only thing I’m looking forward to. I just want to see all of their force ghosts together in peace. I wish there was some way they could add Han, but it wouldn’t make sense.
Like Obi-Wan before him, Luke created a monster... but he was never a monster. Just an afraid old man. Trying his best to do right by all, at his own expense. “You can do everything right and still fail. That’s not a weakness, that is life.”
Presented this to my class and had the whole room including the teacher as why this is one of the greatest stories of good and evil the power of strength independence self conflict and the overall basis to do what you believe. Obi-Wan: Come, Anakin. Master Yoda has a new lesson today Anakin: I don’t wanna go, I’m way ahead of the other younglings. There’s nothing he could teach me. Meanwhile in the youngling training room Yoda: Today, Younglings. Learn the correct approach when an opponent retreats to an elevated level of ground from you we will
Oh my god I just realized a beautiful irony: Luke's looking to the horizon, saved Vader. Luke refused to accept the present of Vader being a machine only capable of evil and kept looking ahead where he turned him back into Anakin. The irony is that Luke's looking ahead with Ben is what turned him into Ren. Luke's looking ahead and only seeing how he could further fail and screw things up more is what stopped him from going back out there. That was Luke's failure. Always looking to the horizon and never being here and now. When Luke realized this, he found the best way to help the future was by saving the present. So he did. He saved Leia, whom he knew would be the one to save Ben.
@@chancellorpalpatine4035 Lule sacrificing himself by using one of the coolest force habilities and facing the result of his greatest failure just by defending and not attacking like a real jedi would do isn't badass enough?
@@chancellorpalpatine4035 The thing is, it didn't "ruin Luke" because he "didn't have a badass scene" (specially because, in my opinion, he had the most badass scene ever in Star Wars, projecting an image of himself that could touch and give Leia that pendant from half the galaxy away, if that isn't badass, I don't know what it is). It "ruined him" because Luke isn't a quitter. Even Mark Hamill was unhappy about how Luke turned in "The Last Jedi", because Luke's main characteristic is that he doesn't give up, he never loses faith, that's why he saved Vader at the end of Return of the Jedi, and that's why he wouldn't have quit after one failure, or would have need years to learn from that mistake. I know where they were going, or more like where they wanted to go. The problem is, they forced the characters to be there, instead of letting the characters write the story. If they wanted Luke out of the scene so Kylo Ren could turn into what he became, it would had been better if he had been searching for a way to save him, instead of having Old Luke just giving up and needing Rey to remind him of who he really is (and she didn't even manage that, Yoda was the one who did it). It certainly would have pissed less fans, and actors, about how Luke was for most of that movie.
Star Wars can't be brought down to one word. It Is about family, redemption, hope and balance. None of these things were in the sequels tho. It has nothing to do with the Skywalker Saga.
The Skywalker story is quite literally the most tragic yet inspiring story of all time in my opinion. The constant heartbreak and defeat and then to be able to bounce back with hope is extraordinary. This made me tear up. Thank you
RogueSpartan117 that’s what makes it so compelling and resonate with anyone who’s gone through life. Life will break you. But the power of hope is undeniable, it’s the overarching theme of Star Wars and the Skywalker saga.
@@supermysticsonic2 ah such a superior being. "Wah wah wah" so deep. So marvelous. What an incredible answer. I must learn from you. Teach me your ways.
“We are what they grow beyond”. That’s what The Last Jedi wants to teach us. Not to kill the past, but to learn from it and become better because of it.
kinda the whole point people didn't take. everyone literally took the point from the character who took the exact wrong message from their life experiences (let the past die, kill it if you have to." because his quote was in the trailers a bunch. Yoda's quote is the lesson, that's the one our heroes take at the end.
Yeah, but that’s also what the saga was teaching before the Sequels even existed. Luke refused to kill his father as everyone wanted, and he tried to help him instead. There’s a reason he says “like my father before me” when he proclaims himself a Jedi. He’s proudly accepting both his father’s greatness and his failure, recognizing the importance of it in order to learn how NOT to fail. So TLJ’s message of learning from the past is good and all, but it was already a core part of the saga (if not THE core part) a long time ago.
@@Gemnist98 Ok, I get it. But what's the point of having a whole saga of six movies delivering a message, only to have it delivered all over again in the span a single movie? Hell, tribute videos are already there for that. We're commenting under one.

“The greatest teacher, Failure is” growing up with this franchise I’ve learned a lot of life lesson from the wise Jedi and even the Sith. But this quote about how even through failing we can still learn really speaks to me. I’ve learned so many things from Yoda and the Jedi but every time I watch them I am still learning new things everyday.
Honestly I didn’t like it when I first saw it either, but imo it has by far the most meat of the sequel trilogy. TROS is a joke, TFA is fun but insubstantial. I think a lot of people miss in TLJ that Luke’s final point is understanding his failures don’t negate the good of the Jedi or himself in the past, and that he should pass on the Jedi Order and not let it die.
@@wyattmund9286 Yeah I agree, although I was the opposite. I really like it when it first came out, and then I realized some of its flaws. Failure is this movie's theme. Poe's failure, Luke's failure, even Kylo's failure to an extent is present in this film. This could have been great if the movie didn't have to bend it self backwards and sideways to convey that theme. It's a theme that could have been executed well if it wasn't for TFA and somewhat Rion Johnson's shortcomings.

The central theme of star wars has always been failure, and how it influences people and circumstances. Star wars battles are not won with power, they are won by learning from mistakes. Failure makes you who you are, and really is the Master of the Master. Star wars teaches you to make failure your master, and that is the most valuable teaching.

4:45 "Skywalker.. still looking to the horizon". A moment we can relate to, when we dreamed of who we could be when we were young.. and looking at who we actually became. . . A failure.
A failure is just a part of the underdog’s story. If we can learn anything from Anakin, Luke and Ben solo it is that even heroes fail. It’s never too late to turn things around and dust ourselves off.
Dude, before the scenes with puppet Yoda in TLJ I was tearing up, then when he hit Luke on the forehead with his cane and smirked I cried but I don't know why. Maybe because of all the nostalgia of episode 5.
@Rifle Eyez but also even if they surpass the teacher, they will still be moulded with the faults of the master. Often we as teachers, partents, mentors dont aknowlegde that we are indeead flawed as well. Cinema therapy (youtube chanel) did a excellent video on this :)
Maybe Trolling. :P (That is hilarious btw XD) But then, even if always looking ahead was a flaw, it was also a strength. Being in the here and now at the time of ep6, would have led Luke in agreeing with Obiwan and killing Vader. Luke's insistence to looking ahead is what saved Vader. Ironically, Luke looking ahead was how he lost Ben. At the end of ep 8 Luke finally found the best middle ground and saved Leia whom would save Ben in the future. Luke died in the present, looking to the horizon. ^_^
@@grandmasteryoda6852 The prequels are better lol. The prequels had a unique new story which was interesting and it had a whole new side of star wars compared to the originals. The sequels are just shitty remakes of the originals, they use the same plot and the story is garbage it's a mess. You can't even compare the two.
Stories need context to be understood. This is the great failure of guys like mauler. Star Wars can’t be broken into its separate parts. It’s the trilogy of trilogies. They all build off of and build up each other. Rian Johnson seemed to understand this better than most. “And for the briefest moment of pure instinct, I thought I could stop it.”.. the way Mark delivers that line, it always wells me up inside. Luke was a different person when we saw him in The Last Jedi, affected by a returning darkness he once thought was gone.. losing his apprentices to his own nephew and watching everything he swore to protect crumble right in front of him, failing Han and Leia.. believing in his own legend. The Luke we saw experienced failure, just like Kenobi and Yoda did. The Last Jedi may have had its problems but it showed us fans a different side to Luke, life isn’t all happiness and rainbows.
Well put. I always thought TLJ showed Luke as he would be, a human. Humans aren’t perfect and they make mistakes. People think it’s weird he tried to save Vader but quit on Kylo, but it’s easy to believe in your dad when you didn’t firsthand witness his atrocities like Obi-Wan. He actually saw the evil things Kylo did and changed his opinion on him like it would any real person. After all Luke in TLJ and Obi wan In a new hope are on pretty similar arcs and nobody was mad at Obi wan for hiding after being a great Jedi.
Luke still suffered a lot on the OT though. Who said the Original Trilogy was about happiness and rainbows? Luke finds and his aunt and uncle charred to a crisp in his own house and has to go on a journey he doesn’t want to go on. Then he watches Obi wan die right in front of him and that’s just on the first movie... how is any of that happy happy rainbows? What the original trilogy taught me that the sequels fail to is that even though there maybe very difficult times and sometimes things aren’t the way you once thought they were, you don’t have walk around hanging your head about it all the time and hide away and live like a hermit loathing yourself for the rest of your life. Put you faith in the good that still exists in people and never give up on that. You never know when someone might have a turn of heart. Fight for the light and thirst for the righteous day that darkness will be vanquished forever and hold onto the good friends that fight with you through it all, because everyone could just hid in a cave and mope around for the rest of their life... but no, there’s a fine fight that must be fought, so never give up on the good in people, whoever it is.
@@jacobclark2409 I agree, but I'd say its unrealistic for anybody to hold onto that hope their entire life. I hated the last Jedi. And still do. This video doesn’t change that - even though it’s a nicely made and edited video. TLJ is literally the worst film I’ve ever seen. From story to execution. It’s a disaster.
Don’t get me wrong. I was very “meh” about TLJ. I walked out of the theater not in my usual giddiness. It has its flaws, yes, absolutely. It has pacing issues, tonal issues. Plot holes. What this video does for me, however, is make me understand the Luke Skywalker we meet in TLJ. It pieces together all eight movies and tells a complete story that Rian wasn’t able to. It gives a depth that’s missing in the movie. It, to me, brings into focus the choice Rian made. I don’t agree with everything he did in the movie, but this video helps me understand and come to accept the choice he made for Luke.
CaptainMyCaptain Amazing, every word of what you just said was wrong. The hate will die down, This was an astounding video, And I am not the only person to like The Last Jedi.
A lot of part in TLJ are semi-redeemed for me because of this channel. But Rian Johnson still failed at what matters: Developing the protagonist--Rey, btw, in case we forgot; I know I did.
That force projection cost him his physical form, and in no way could he have hurt Ben, or been hurt by Ben in any way, but using that cross galaxy ability and doing it in exactly the Jedi way, confronting both Ben and his own failures, admitting and trying to atone for them, and winning really, without ever really fighting, just as Kenobi did
He wasn't ready yet obi wan had done so much lived so much like needed a redemption arc he was so much more and the film s have stolen him from us whether alive dead or a force ghost they tried subverting our expectations by taking away the best most hopeful and pure of heart hero we had ever seen and this man who could have led and maintained peace was a pathetic old man who hated all and was scared for no reason except Disney wanting to kill him off

ChouHQ 2500 I was under the impression that the map wasn’t a map to Luke Skywalker, but rather to the first Jedi Temple. It was only assumed that’s where he was.
The reason I liked Luke's portrayal and direction in TLJ was that it showed that Luke was more than just a larger than life, ultra powerful figure: he was most of all a real person. And he had real regrets and it showed in his performance. It brought someone who was a legend down to earth. It showed it could've been any of us.
@@siftwram True, but at the same time i find it extremely inconceivable that someone who stood before Darth Vader, someone who had committed countless atrocities including slaughtering literal children, managed to see the good in Darth Vader and bring him back while years later would not be able to see the good in Ben Solo. The Ram The Legends Luke wasn't perfect either. He was more in character. Flawed in a believable way. But his resolve never faltered, no matter what crap was thrown at him he kept going. Less "I'm going to murder my nephew in his sleep." And less giving up and running away after failing once.
@@siftwram Problem is there should've been more progression. He saw one thought in Ben's head and panicked then closed himself away on an island to die. It just doesn't feel like Luke to give up on someone so easily, the story needed fleshing out more.
Even after having troubles accepting The Last Jedi and its shortcomings, I'm glad to be able to come to your channel and find the heart of Star Wars once again. Thank you.
I’ve been watching this video for the last few years, Luke has been my role model since I was 5. I want to thank you for not just showing my man’s in his truly deservedly right, but also his connection to the force which people forget exists within us all not just “Skywalkers” as they think they’ll become to be called.
I would have loved something like Kylo telling Luke he'll finish what Vader started (by killing him), only for Luke to answer "My father was a Jedi Knight, and the bravest man I have ever known." Given that Kylo worshipped Darth Vader only as a dark lord, it would have been perfect for Luke to remember him that Anakin was born as a good man. And had died as one too.
I'm hoping that Luke's story in Episode 9 involves attempting to make up for his actions by apologizing to Kylo Ren and showing him compassion, as well as the ultimate fate of Vader, in the hopes of redeeming him.
That line"You will be." Whew. I can definitely see the irony now. Luke become afraid in very much the same way Yoda did, but in the end he embraced his legend again and became a Jedi without actually having to fight his own nephew.
@@noahhathaway5065 I'm sorry, are you meaning to imply that you know more about Luke Skywalker than Luke Skywalker? Cause, after seeing the film, Mark Hamil said that he was happy with how Luke was portrayed in The Last Jedi.
This makes Lucas look sooo good! He didn’t make the prequels for the money, he did it because he had to. Later: Wait a second, are you trying to UNITE THE FANBASE!?
@JT I could have had plenty of unexpected things there is next to nothing told about the clone wars other than it happened and Anakin fought in it with obiwan. There were literally thousands of idea that could have been used look at the multitude of comics set in the period that are inifitly better than the films
Superb: the flow of this masterpiece was phenomenal, and you have once again woven together all 3 parts of this grand story into something truly special. The echoes of the old and the new in this are simply astounding, all matching to fit the theme of the video, the teaching through failure. I understand that some people will not enjoy some parts of the franchise, both old and new, but it’s thanks to creators like yourself that can take all of it and make something we can all love and connect with, through smiles and tears. Thank you for making this Star Wars fan, of all three generations, smile and shed at tear. May the Force be with you, and all of us.

it means literally nothing other than 'for no reason at all except that rey is younger and we are too lazy to write a good script, she just rocks and you suck'

@@BRONZALiVE IMO you're right, take the audience from familiar characters and through those well loved figures bring them towards the new crew. They decided to enter the trilogy with a bang It worked ok but It seems very distant from the whole saga.
@Mallory Poling With Rey having Palpatine lineage, being a dyad with Ben, and with training, I think TROS did her justice. TROS is what i think is the best ST movie by far.
This is honestly why I love what happened with Luke in TLJ. It encompasses what Yoda told Luke in ESB, that he will be afraid and that he always looked to the future, instead of being in the moment, just like his father was. Luke, again, needed to hear that very first lesson that Yoda taught him on Dagobah very much. Luke needed that push to get going again instead of cutting himself off from the force forever. Luke needed to escape that ditch that he was trapped in for so long, just like Anakin. They both had something to pull themselves from darkness. Luke had the Resistance and that reborn hope, and Anakin had his son, and another chance. George Lucas said that Star Wars is like poetry, it rhymes. This story of Luke executes on that saying very well, and it's beautiful.

“You will be, you will be...”
Gave me chills.
Now I understand, Fear really fuels the darkside.
That line just made me look at the last Jedi a little different
Yoda may or may not have been going off premonition, but it was true either way. The Force and conflict between the dark and light side has led to scary consequences from all who were involved, from killing children, your best friend, or your student. The Force is terrifying in a way simply because of how quickly it can ruin lives, despite its potential for good. Luke is right when he says the Force never belonged to the Jedi, they simply learned the most about it and in a way, feared it more than anyone else.

Oh my god I just realized a beautiful irony:
Luke's looking to the horizon, saved Vader.
Underrated comment.

“Thank you, Rian. Perhaps I treated you too harshly.”
But in the end, I loved the message it had, along with some great shots and moments. I don't think it deserves as much hate because I think Rian Johnson had a genuine message that came from the heart, no matter what people's opinion are about how he delivered it.

Which is ironic considering they wrote the line "failure is the greatest teacher"
The central theme of star wars has always been failure, and how it influences people and circumstances. Star wars battles are not won with power, they are won by learning from mistakes. FK the last few seconds
But hope will always be with us
@@jacobclark2409 I agree, but I'd say its unrealistic for anybody to hold onto that hope their entire life. There will always come a time where someone feels hopeless and Luke did that realizing his fear had become a reality and it was to a degree his fault.
People always saw luke disappearing as a death...I saw it as luke ascending. He moved past the need for power and went beyond.
When they disappear, they become one with the Force, which means death in the physical plane. He is probably a Force Ghost now.
Hence, The Rise Of Skywalker is the title of Episode IX.
more powerful than you could possibly Imagine
That force projection cost him his physical form, and in no way could he have hurt Ben, or been hurt by Ben in any way, but using that cross galaxy ability and doing it in exactly the Jedi way, confronting both Ben and his own failures, admitting and trying to atone for them, and winning really, without ever really fighting, just as Kenobi did
He wasn't ready yet obi wan had done so much lived so much like needed a redemption arc he was so much more and the film s have stolen him from us whether alive dead or a force ghost they tried subverting our expectations by taking away the best most hopeful and pure of heart hero we had ever seen and this man who could have led and maintained peace was a pathetic old man who hated all and was scared for no reason except Disney wanting to kill him off
well Yoda was right, Luke would be afraid. The fear of failure. And Yoda could predict that.

He didn’t fear Kylo. He could destroy Kylo. He feared failure

I would have loved something like Kylo telling Luke he'll finish what Vader started (by killing him), only for Luke to answer "My father was a Jedi Knight, and the bravest man I have ever known."
Given that Kylo worshipped Darth Vader only as a dark lord, it would have been perfect for Luke to remember him that Anakin was born as a good man. And had died as one too.
I'm hoping that Luke's story in Episode 9 involves attempting to make up for his actions by apologizing to Kylo Ren and showing him compassion, as well as the ultimate fate of Vader, in the hopes of redeeming him.
