I like the slow to respond tactic. About 1 in 3 emails that people send me with a question, they send a second one a few min/hours later saying they figured it out. pro tip :D
I've read that one of the main keys for success if you're going to do this is to not try and be a superstar at any one job. If an assignment is due Friday and you got it done Wednesday, focus on your other job and don't try to stand out. You're not looking for a promotion or to have more work heaped on you. Personally, I'd have to get to a point where my job is super easy, something I could do in my sleep. One of my buddies works as a Staff Engineer for a major company and is a star, but tells me he honestly puts in only an hour or two of actual work a day and, believe it or not, spends a good amount of time just consuming edibles! You can't have two super challenging jobs. I mean you can, I guess, but then you're going to be driven nuts, especially if any of the jobs requires you to be on call. One of your jobs has to be something that 2 hours or less of actual work a day will keep your boss happy.
Yup I completely agree. You want to do great work but fly under the radar. A promotion gets you maybe a 10% increase which isn’t significant when you’re making double with two jobs.
thanks for sharing your thoughts on working remote. I take online classes and it's not the same thing as you but I still learn a thing or two from your videos
I’ve started printing my calendar to have in front of me and also doing to-do list for the week and next day! It helps tremendously! I like your tip on waiting to respond 🙂 I have a bad habit to respond immediately and then I realize that I forgot what I was focusing on before… 😅 25 mins will be challenging for me, but I have to adopt it! Do you have slack, outlook on your phone to check messages/emails?
I have my sticky note with my to-do list in front of me right now! It helps so much. I do have Slack and Outlook on my phone. I've tried not having them but it ends up driving me even more crazy thinking people might be messaging me and I'm not seeing it.
I'm watching this at 2 am, on a weekend... and still instant I heard the slack notification chirp I reflexively winced Remote work isn't wonderful, it is traumatizing
Awesome video! Thank you. I’m starting out in product design, so far I worked on 1 app and 1 web platform. I’m job hunting at the moment. Would you make a video for people starting out in product design? Job hunt tips, time management, people skills, office politics, the list goes on…
Hi, @Jake Ferrin. What did your working hours look like on a typical day? And, did you always take two days off for the weekend? Just trying to get a sense of how this might work.
My working hours were usually 8:30-5:30 and nothing on Saturday or Sunday. So really not too bad. I was just used to working like two hours a day so it was a lot for me haha
Hey I just posted a video answering your question, how the one company found out. Take a look if you’re interested. And thanks for the question! ua-cam.com/video/luBR_QK7z5E/v-deo.html
I've never laughed so hard at the zoom skit and the pressure of seeing someone typing and a zoom link poping up. That's amazing.
Haha thanks glad you liked it
The "hey, real quick meeting" requests, followed by the requestor not showing, honestly made me twitch a bit.
I lost my sheeeeit when I saw this! “I’m finishing up my other meeting.” After you blew dude up! 🤦♂️ despicable!

Super awesome video man. About to attempt and do this as well so super excited I stumbled upon your videos.
Oh man the slack notification makes me panic.
I'm freelancing multiple projects at once it's quite stressful.
I'm glad to know I'm not the only one that reflexively twitched in discomfort at that sound
This is me!! 😂
We call it the “busy man paradox” this is GOLDEN!
remember to turn OFF the message "read" notifications if you can.
Before I got UA-cam Premium I remember UA-cam was playing me a lot of Slack ads and they slightly triggered me every time.

This is gold
This is me, i’ll be so overloaded that i do nothing
Thank you! I love this!
Thanks for the helpful tips, much love from Nigeria 🇳🇬🇳🇬🇳🇬🇳🇬
The meetings is what kills it for me
lmao. with the persistent zoom and slack quick huddles at this point I tell them to piss off.
Hah yeah I’m all about the Slack video messages now over Zoom calls. Asynchronous is the future!
I'm the same way with the stick notes
your tips are the best!
I would love to see your schedule on a calendar or something. Just to get a sense of how you split your days between the 2 jobs.
I showed my schedule in my latest video! ua-cam.com/video/4MKFjqYKLFU/v-deo.html
@@JakeFerrin Sweet, thank you
1:38 - When I heard that noise I felt interrupted already.
Loved the beluga part haha
Beluga in the workplace on Slack lol
that slack notification sound terrorizes me

Thanks Binbin! Good luck on the job hunt. I'll put some thought into a video for new designers. That would be cool.
Can you let us know if you had like 2 monitors each hooking up with laptop for your 2 remote jobs ?

How did the first job find out?
I told a friend I took the new job. He told his boss who knows my boss at the first job.
@@JakeFerrin oh okay. Thought it was some tracking system lol
@@JakeFerrin Snitches get stitches 😂
I start my second job Monday! And my first job is telephone base and my second isn’t I was just concerned about training, any tips for training

I don’t understand why you didn’t sub any of the work out
You ruined for everybody. This is why businesses are stopping remote working 😡
You working two jobs and getting caught publicly does more harm for Work from home long-term than you think. 🤡
By then his yt channel will be pulling in some good money
