    • @pvagnier
      @pvagnier 7 років тому +43

      You are right about the different dialect. But the key difference is the grammar which has its roots in West Africa, particularly Benin. That is also where some of the religious practices come from. Some of my Senegalese friends (both Wolof and Fulani) sometimes refer to Hatians as Beninois. I had a Marabout in Casamance (Senegal) explain some of the background. Very interesting stuff.

    • @pvagnier
      @pvagnier 7 років тому +16

      True you are right. There is obviously a mix. The Senegalese, being mainly Sunni Muslim (sufi) focus on that a bit. Primarily because of the religious aspects. Like here there are stereotypes. For example people from Gabon (fairly oil rich) are viewed as snobs. I guess it is the same stuff everywhere. Just wish Haiti would get a break. Seems like a constant stream of problems, earthquakes, hurricains, etc. Good luck.

      Mia Calixte, it's not your fault if your parents did not teach it to you. Even me I'm guilty of not teaching my kids creole because they are mixt with Mexican, and I live in Texas with no Haitians around. So I tried teaching them when they were little but other kids started to make fun of them because they couldn't understand them so I stopped. But now I started teaching them again.

Today I can understand, I would say about 70% of what was said. Bon bagay. Also i coming from Trinidad, my grandmother spoke it, but never passed it down to my mother, my 7 aunts and my 3 uncles. My grandmother and her sisters would speak it to each other thou. Many Trinidadians unfortunately has similar stories.

      People from Dominica and Guadalupe speak a similar Creole but they call it patwa for some reason.

      John Gumbs Elder Haitians would call it patois also, but now it’s official and patois has its negative connotations.

    The mess up thing about it is the Haitian grown folks know some can't speak fluently in the language and they joke us or pull our legs. They get us good when it comes to the numbers 😂

    LMAO literally. Highkey though his impersonation of the Haitian relative was not only spot on, but spoke clearer creole then a lot of these angry mumbled speakers I been hearing since I immigrated here at 5 y/o. I love how understanding and not being able to reciprocrate is more common then I thought but now I'm trying... and lol the "and you wear haitian hats thing" lmao. They really out here telling you you're not really haitian when convenient.
