    For those who are debating whether or not the language is Jamaican or Patio, it depends on your mentality. If you have a colonial enchained mentality then you will argue English is the language of Jamaica as Britain imposed this language as the ,'official' language of JA. However if you have a nationalist view then you would acknowledge patois as the Jamaican language. Patois is a langage that was created by slaves in Jamaica to enable them to communicate with each. It is a mixture of broken English and African, and helped many Jamaican slaves to plan their freedom against the British slave owners. It is the native langage of the people of Jamaica.

    Just like any other languages or developing languages there is a structure that embodies the Jamaican language. Therefore one has to understand first that, it is not English or English derived though words in English are used in several instances with a blend of creative phonetics in delivery. However, I like how you state the question because the origin of the word patios was really used originally and probably still used to denigrate the people who had to create another way of communication to deceive the oppressors.

      The word Patwa (as most Jamaicans will spell it with little care for the imperial meaning) is a source of pride for many Jamaicans especially abroad

I'm Jamaican

    • @MistyNights35
      @MistyNights35 5 років тому

      Taynot Lewis-Yes! Only the rastas have the dreds and smoke the ganja a lot, Rastafarian is a religion actually and many people mistake it for the WHOLE Jamaican culture when it's not!

    • @MistyNights35
      @MistyNights35 5 років тому

      Natty Shivambu-I appreciate your love for rastas and you try to make it out to be Jamaican culture when it's an aspect of a religion. The rasta colors are of the Jamaican flag and that's why it reminds people of reggae because reggae is Jamaican. Rastas may not have a bad rep with other cultures of people but with Jamaicans, Rastas don't work as hard, and they smoke ganja too much. I'm not saying that Jamaicans who don't practice being a Rastafarian don't smoke, but that's all they do, most just live off the land and don't work. That's why most Jamaicans make the quick distinction between a Jamaican that's a rasta. So, you might want to learn a little more about the culture you so adore yourself.
