Cutting Laminate Worktop for a Kitchen Sink: Part 6 | The Carpenter's Daughter

- Опубліковано 1 гру 2018
- Hi all & welcome back to another kitchen utility project! This week, I show you how I cut a hole in my laminate worktop for a kitchen sink.
Now I haven't fixed it in to place yet, so hopefully I can show that soon, but that's because I wanted to remove it for easy access when fitting our new tap.
Also, if you want to watch how I'm getting on much sooner, then why not go & follow my Instagram (@thecarpenters_daughter)? I've found logging in and sharing Instagram stories very motivating through the day:

Vicki I'm so glad it came out the way you envisioned. I'm so glad you've finished this build. And so many great tips along the way. Women can do anything when they put their mind to it! Fantastic job! You truly are an inspiration!
Thanks! Apart from planning where things have gone and challenging myself to bite size jobs each week, I am confident any woman or man can! Even on a tight budget!!
I’ll bet your father is so very proud of you and your accomplishments. Great video again. Thanks for sharing. I would only hope that my daughter would not fall to far from the tree and do woodworking in the future
Thanks! I think he is as he's now invited me down his woodyard to show me how they make their sheds... and I can't wait!!!
Just keep encouraging your daughter and showing her handy methods when she needs your help and I'm sure she'll be fine. I only started learning things from my Dad when I needed to after moving in to this house 😁 And the same goes with my father in law... answering my questions on how is never too much trouble 😊
Thank you so much. I will at that.
You explain very beautifully... My vote is with you...
Thank you so much again 😁
Beautiful job, very satisfying. Like a glove indeed!
Haha, thanks so much :D
Another cracking job vikki 👌💁🏼couple of tips, draw around a coin for the corner markings and cut the work top in place and slide it around to avoid cutting units. This just saves the risk of it breaking at the weak points around sink cut out 😋. Lovely neat job though 👏👏👏
Thanks for the tips 😊👍

Fantastic video!!
This is my next project.
Excellent work xx
It's actually been quite fun and working out very well! Just altered the waste pipe today and washing machine hose.. now to fix the sink down (heard that can be a nightmare!)
Another way of reducing risk of laminate chipping is to use a Stanley knife to score the laminate along the straight lines using a 1m metal ruler.
Yes, I think I remember you saying that in my wardrobe scribing video. Thanks again 😊
Well done. A nice neat job.
Thank you 😍
It turned out nice.
Thanks very much 😀
That is very clever what you did on the corner
Did this today and the tip at 2:40 was really helpful. x
Glad it helped :)
Wish my daughter was as skilled as yourself
Thanks great help 👍🏽
love the tap i genly keep the cut out and use it as a chopping board after sticking silicon cover on both sides one for meat one for veg and fruit loving ya stuff
Reminds me of where I used to work a customer wanted a sunroof and uprated stereo system fitted the guys where doing the sunroof and cut out the wrong side of the template and when they went to fit the sunroof in it just fell through.... fair to say the customer didn’t get his car back for quite a while lolol
Lovely job there Vikkie you should be doing “How too’s” for all the big DIY stores 👍😁
OMG... I would have been PANICKING haha! I quite like the sound of that if the stores taught me even more techniques 😁
Not bad for a lass from Donny 😂😂 seriously though it's looking good Vicki 👍
Haha, thanks! 😂
Wow, you are dressed so nice you must be on your way to having tea with the Queen! Sink looks nice too.
Thanks lol :) Annoyingly when I filmed my first intro, the rain lashing on the conservatory was far too loud in the video 😡 So I had to redo it the next day just before I went out for a food filming job!
Really clear - thanks. I've got to cut a tap hole in a wooden worktop and am having trouble finding advice on best placement.
Thanks :) Hope you can find the answers!
Nice one , looking good thing that used to annoy me was the clips underneath on sinks dunno if you had those sometimes they are a pain and don't grip to pull it down . Cheers I voted 👍🔨
Thanks!! I've heard they're an absolute pain as well as the plastic bits on them these days can break... so not looking forward to fitting those 😂
A quick tip, if you don't have a fiance to hold the bit of worktop you're cutting out. You could always clamp some wood underneath the worktop to stop it dropping out.
Great tip! Wish I had thought of that! Will do for next time :)
Well done you looks good
Looking a bit glam.
You need to take into account the tap handle range at the back. I replaced a tap, but it fouls on the tiles when on full cold and just a little open.
Thanks for the tip and very good point! Mine thankfully has plenty of space for tiling behind while turning off and on, but will pin this just for future researchers to read. And I had to go out for a food filming dat right after 😉
Great that you use eye protection, but unless your jigsaw has a silencer on it,(joke) that noise will hurt your hearing in the long run. And this was a very helpful video- both seeing and hearing your explanations. Thanks. RB
If I didn't wear ear defenders, then it was an accident. I always wear them as hate the noise 😂
Looking sharp
Thanks so much 😊
Persuaded - going to buy a drill bit and jigsaw and masking tape tomorrow
Glad I encouraged :)
You remind me of rose byrne. Especially in Peter rabbit. Only I've never seen her do diy lol
More girls 👭 ladies should get abit more independent, it don't need to be a handyman... I've just finished wood panneling my hallway a real learning curve just like your videos 📹... P. S you got my vote ❎ ❤️📽️🎞️
Thanks so much :) And I wholeheartedly agree!
Well done it looks great, I have already voted for you and your 2 pals (I actually already have their channels subscribed and the bell clicked) as you pointed out that I could only vote once I re-entered with my girlfriends IP and voted again. hope you all do well
Aww, that's so sweet, thank you so much! :) Hopefully it will help give us more recognition :D You can be the greatest DIYer in the world, but sadly half of what comes with UA-cam or blogging is being found in a google search regarding SEO. So every little helps :) Thanks again!
Textbook guide there , spot on !
Thanks! 😊 Hopefully it'll give others confidence too 😀
I am petrified of cutting work tops
I want to router the joints
Why did you not use the router method
I hate downward cutting jigsaw blades, they are horrible to use so well done in persevering with that.
Thanks! I'm not sure I can tell a difference between cutting, but it took a while as it was so thick haha
U look gorgeous
Hey I think I’ve just fitted that exact same tap, for some reason I’ve got really low hot water pressure after fitting presume yours is fine ?
Hi, ours in a combi boiler system if that makes any difference? The hot water pressure seems to be fine to me.
Hi thanks for reply yes I think ours is faulty, pressure all good up to the ends of the tap tails but as soon as connect them in hot water just dribbles out.
Nice job btw , I nearly made the wrong side of the line mistake when cutting my sink out and just caught myself as was about to drill the pilot holes.
Thanks! I have read some issues with it, so I would definitely send it back as faulty
Was you going snorkeling after the video 😂
Hey Kate
LOL... I assume Kate Middleton again? 😂

I'm going to build a tiny house out of all reclaimed wood that I'm going to mill myself i need your help 😎
I thought u put a rubber sealant under the sides of the sink.
I used down facing blades before i would never recommend them easier with progressor blades
Why would you not recommend the downward-cutting blades Keith?
@@grayhalf1854 a chance of getting stuck and jigsaw doesnt stop bounces upwards.
Progressor blades are dtraight facing give a good cut and no bounce
Just my preference but im sure a few ppl might like the down facing
@@keithbyrne4872 thanks for your comment Keith. I've been struggling with a downward blade in an old jigsaw trying to cut laminate and it was kicking like an ill-tempered mule. Bit the bullet and tried the same blade in a new £25 jigsaw from Screwfix and it cuts like a dream - controllable, cuts true, minimal kickback and zero chipping. Learning that old tools (some inherited from my late dad) are sometimes much inferior to cheapo modern ones...
Nice, but you really need a plumber's putty under the perimeter of the sink.
Bună treabă...
Mulțumesc :)
have no idea why I subscribed as there is no chance for me to do anything like this...Must admit, I even failed to learn how to use electric drill...
Just an observation, when sawing MDF or chipboard with synthetic glues, a dusk mask is essential. Get a pair of safety glasses rather than goggles so you can wear with a mask.
Thanks! I didn't really think this was an issue with chipboard, but could be wrong. I have however worn a face mask as the very least with MDF. Can't remember eyewear (probably) as it was a few weeks ago.
Coloured your tips? Your hair looks different
😄 Nope.. just curled my hair as had to go out right after filming 😉 I had my hair highlighted last Summer but it doesn't grow that quickly these days lol
I'm just slow to notice then 😆
Lol.. I'll let you off 😂 the contours of curls always look brighter when daylight hits them in places 😀
I'll use the excuse that I'm always paying attention to the job your doing to pick up tips.
OK. But the hole was cut out a bit large, the sink moved easily . Cut it as tight as possible, there is only 10mm lip and if you make it even less...
Also, the cabinets are as flimsy as they are, but why making them even more so by removing that piece that broke? You should've replaced it or put timber underneath and secure it in place.
Overall, good channel to watch if you are woman and like a lot of chatter and adverts to increase the profitability of the vlogging.
Pay no attention to sexist jerks like this. You did an incredibly good job. Some people actually don't know how UA-cam works. Keep on doing amazing work. You got my sub.
