The French side ultimately went on to lose to West Germany in the semi-finals, a match that I consider to be the most captivating FIFA WC match ever.
Canada had a decent side back in 1986. Only one CONCACAF side qualified (Mexico was host). We never lost a qualifier. And beat a tough Honduras team away. People slag on Canadian footy and with good reason but this was a decent side. Our quality evolved because of the old North American Soccer League where stars of the past played their final games. I remember Alan Ball playing for the Vancouver team that won in 1979. Pele of course played for Cosmos and Cruyff for Los Angeles. Many Canadian players played in the NASL and our international results showed. After the NASL died our footy slowly got worse. Sure we didn't score at the World Cup but we played a defensive style and our top striker (IMO) John Catliff was injured.
This was a great game. Definitely the best Canada played at the World Cup in 1986. They scared the French early on with their aggressive play, but eventually, fate would take over...

Canada has a mediocre soccer team. But it was pretty impressive that they qualified for The World Cup even though they didn't score a single goal. There are still many national soccer teams that have not qualified for the World Cup.

Mexico automatically qualification meant that only one other Concacaf team could qualify instead of two (which was the number of qualifiers in that group at the time). So, in reality is was more difficult for Canada to qualify than if Mexico had to play for a position in the tournament.

He wasn't that good yet ( we can see his partenairs desappointed) Therefore Papin didn't play a minute in that WC, not a single one. 3 or 4 years later, he was really efficient. But too late

Can't see Canada qualifying for the World Cup in the foreseeable future. The US (even though they missed out this time) and Mexico guarantee 2 of the 4 births. Countries like Honduras, Costa Rica, Jamaica, Trinidad have too much pedigree in their football for Canada to challenge them. Canada need to get players to play football in the major European leagues if they want any success
