Great love it wow 55 yrs ago! Was 11 remember loving this Dr especially with repeats in Australia got to see in colour in 1975 so wonderful. I remember the later seasons & watching when Jo appeared & her fluffy coat I loved it & I thought was white but was blue!🎉 So loved Liz as well & classic UNIT team marvellous ❤ thank you JT & panel big cheers from Oz
I made a point of rewatching Spearhead from Space today; hardly an onerous task, yet I never fail to be struck by in how many ways was this story so ground-breaking; the best introduction of a new, most dynamic of Doctors; the best possible way to breathe new life into the show; arguably the most sinister antagonists to date; an inspired direction for a companion, making her a veritable polymath, and hence, not so readily outshone by the Doctor. Watching it on this most recent occasion, I found myself wondering how instrumental was this story alone in turning the tide that had been viewers' indifference to the show? I'm willing to bet a pretty penny that the first two episodes were more than enough! 10/10, all day long! Many thanks, JT, Kirsty, Phil, George, Paul, and Michael, for each being more than equal to the task of commemorating this landmark. All the best for now. Paul
Great stream. Wonderful to hear and read peoples memories of this great story and of the Pertwee era in general. All Classic stuff between 1970-77. It is what made the show so special. It captured the imagination that no other show could. Sadly, in the last 7 years it’s failed to do that with a possible new generation of fans. The future parents. That’s the real damage of the Chibnall/RTD2 eras. That Dr Who will be remembered as a weak generic fantasy show. Nobody will be talking so lavishly about The Church On Ruby Road or The Woman that Fell To Earth in 55 years time😢
I enjoyed your your review on Spearhead From Space, and I totally agree 10/10. And I also enjoyed your Sunday Night show very much. Thank you for mentioning me on your Sunday Night Show. Much appreciated.
I am trying to think back to the era when I was shorter and had more hair to work out what was my first Doctor Who. It just seems to be a constant. My older sister was always more into it than me. I know she watched it even when I was watching for the kitchen (I was once an impressionable and sensitive young man, the Cold Dead Heart came later...). Also Grandpa used to call it Doctor Uw Wu to us. Never completely worked out if that was just a funny thing he decided to use on us Grand kiddies or from the 60s era titles where the 'WHO' would sort of mutate. So never knew if he was a casual fan or just being a good Grandpa to us. I know I can't have seen Spearhead when it first screened as the dates to not remotely match. Australian ABC used to have Doctor Who repeats on five days a week for about 8 months of the year. I guess they had the rights to screen repeats and just slotting them in made for easy programming. So, despite my fuzzy memory I know Petwee era and later Tom were a massive part of my childhood. Earlier DW didn't get shown. Probably because it was in B&W at a guess. (and I think even then a lot of Patrick's stuff had been... recycled...). I know I watch Spearhead a lot growing up and some very good memories reinforced by return viewings now I am taller and grumpier. Looking forward to the new released for this season.
I also think that the fact that this story was 4 episodes and the other 3 stories are all 7 parters meant that Spearhead didn't overstay its welcome. It zips along a nice pace, never lets up and you can see why Pertwee's Doc became known as the action Doctor. Brilliant stuff.
Great show. Sorry I keep missing the live shows lately, but I shall be back! Great panel, lots of pertwee love, and I'm off to watch Spearhead yet again :)
You could have released it as a proper cinema film and it would have done decent box office like the more successful Hammer and Amicus movies make a good double bill with Hammer's Quatermass and the Pit
Amazing how they changed so much with that first story. No working Tardis so stuck on Earth, UNIT playing a much bigger part, a completely new Doctor with a new look and of course shot in glorious colour. And yet, within one episode you were completely convinced that this was the Doctor and the show was still Dr. Who. Shows exactly how to change things but maintain the DNA of the show and the character. Shame the current lot couldn't manage the same trick.
Had to leave the livestream midway. Shame as I rewatched Spearhead a couple of times so I could join in with a few comments. I wonder if the Season 7 Collection version will have anything added ie. enhanced special effects?
