Cool video. I am getting ready to overhaul the front and rear ends on my 98 E150. I will be completed replacing the suspension and the rear axle will get a Traction Lok.
My biggest regret was sell my 99 5.4 2v, and got an 05 and 5.4 3v 200k miles later 2 phaser changes and oil pump that’s giving out, I miss my 2 valve engine
I have a 2002 5.4 with 35k on it and even though I have put only 2.5k on it I'm already loving the thing. It runs like it's brand new and doesn't have all of the issues the 3v guys are talking about even though it is 15 years old. I really feel like I can depend on it and I've owned plenty of vehicles I don't feel the same about even a few cars that were newer.
5.4 has issues, yes, and admittedly the Chevy is easier to work on. I own both. However, that Ford trans doesn't blow out the 3-4 clutches or fracture the shell at 70k like the 4l60E does it? I don't care what manufacturer, they all have good parts and bad parts. The 5.4 Triton, with a few relatively simple improvements, can be a beast of an engine. The bottom ends are hardcore. The sprak plug and coils issue, the oil pump drive gear issue, and the cam phasers issue, are actually easier to fix early on than rebuilding a transmission (even a "built" one) every 70-80 thousand miles in my opinion. Good video though. Our 5.4 has 166k on her right and runs well, but I was thinking ahead to when Ill need to rebuild her, and your video gave me some ideas. Thank you. :)
How did you get the engine disconnected from the tranny I’m doing a swap on my 2005 f150 and I’ve got all the bell housing bolts out along with the starter and it’s got ab an inch gap between the tranny and engine but can’t get it to come the rest of the way. What do I do?
Lol i like how that gray bucket has oil and coolant mixed in it lmao, do u need to remove the starter to get the engine out? Theres a 3rd bolt im having a hard time getting to
First of all-thanks for the video. Just a bit of info. , if you MAINTAIN, the motor/engine, none of these things you say are junk. And that goes for any engine made by anyone. MAINTENANCE MAINTENANCE MAINTENANCE and by the way, you didn't even mention any tools required for removal. Thanks again
Good videos. Having the 5.4l Triton in my 2008 F250, I am very interested in your updates. My F250 has lived in the South, so no rust due to road salt. But I have noticed the rear exhaust manifold studs are broke and I will need to address that soon.
The 5.4 3v requires regular Maintenance, especially oil changes. Yes a few design flaws, #1 the oil pump. #2 the oil galleys. #3 the vct solenoids.. But if you keep oil changed regularly, you probably won't have any problems.
The Phaser Lockouts you mentioned are the issue. They masked the oil pressure issue. Phaser failure is a symptom, not the problem. If you don't determine why the phasers failed you are going to eventually have an engine failure.
Although it’s a two valve engine in my 2000 f150 it has absolutely no rust on the motor or under carriage. Granted I also live in the south far from snow and salt air.
there is no way you pulled engine an left motor mounts in place an no way you put engine back in with motor mounts on engine,I know because I just replaced a 5.4 on 2006 f150 an it was not like you showed on your video.
I have a 2000 f-150. With 240k miles. Its thrown 3 plugs and first cylinder leaks water into it. Whats The best engine to replace it with? I worry just doing head gaskets would be a waste.
just put a new jasper in my 04 last week bought my 04 new put a 150000 miles on it and the roller rockers gave up tickin so loud and just a matter of time before one fell out and broke everything else up top when i put it back togeather i used stainless steel exhaust studs the manifolds were tickin too
How long did it take you to get it all out?.. im thinking of pulling my engine and doing a rebuild. There is currently nothing severely wrong with it but timing chain is starting to go and i really just want to bulletproof it to make it as reliable as i can for future. Would you reccomend it or just sell the truck and get something else
Had a 81 Chevy trk with 350k the cam lobes finally went flat. I changed the oil every 3000 miles with Exxon super flow. The trk had 128 k on it when I bought from a old man.,Chevy 305 are truds when it come to performance but last forever. I think it's because they don't have enough power to blow up.
+Ricardo Lupian These motors are extremely sensitive to oil and oil pressure. Only run motorcraft synthetic blend 5w-20 and an absolute must is a motorcraft oil filter as well.
+Tim Hannah motorcraft oil isn't a must I have a mechanic that's owns a 2006 f150 5.4L with 252k miles on it and he bought the truck brand new and he has only used Mobil 1 oil and his truck runs perfectly and it doesn't burn oil so what matters is use a quality oil
My 1999 F150 4x4 5.4 2v oil pump just went (over 330,000 miles) and I am going to replace it with a 5.4 2v that I have with 150,000 miles on it. Yep, the engine locked up real quick when it went.
Wow, I just got doing the same thing last weekend. What ended up happening with mine was the timing guides broke (Both sides - small pieces) and fell down into the crank sprocket and that chewed the plastic timing guides and that (I believed) plugged the oil pickup with plastic filings. I didn't take the oil pan off to look for sure, but it sure seemed that way. Lost oil pressure and seized so quick??? Ordered my new long block on Monday and going to throw that in when it gets here.I ended up taking off all COP, Water Pump, Fan Clutch, balancer, Etc. I didn't have any clearance issues with popping it out of the hole. Going to put it back in that way as well. Putting it back in with all new water pump, headers, tensioner and pulleys and all the little stuff that I can.
Tim Hannah, thanks for the quick reply before. That worked perfectly. I figured I would try asking again for some more help. I'm pretty sure I have everything unbolted except where the engine mounts bolt to the engine. I'm assuming I have to unbolt it there cuz the engine has to come straight out from the transmission. Any tips for unbolting the mounts?
Unbolt the transmission from the crossmember and there is 2 bolts on engine mounts. Lift motor and trans together seperate than up and out. You will need a load leveler on your picker so you can tilt engine. Getting it out is the easy part. Lining it back up wasnt too bad but i had a buddy helping me that day.
my dads ford expidition with the 4.6 spun a baring and he is wondering how you had got the old engine out and the new engine in because the shop said we have to take the shell off but he is trying to do it him self
I normally lift the cab off, you don't have to disconnect the a/c and every thing is readally accessable for quicker change over and fewer skinned knuckels .
Don't be sorry lol, anyone who's being honest never wants to deal with a 3 valve Triton. The 2 valve is a lot better, but the spark plug issues and intake / exhaust manifold issues are still a pain. Just ask me how I know lol. Even in northern Canada I never got that much corrosion!
+Angel's Truck Performance outfitters Tpo i removed the 3 bolts and cut the dip stick tube, 3$ new. had to remove basically everything to get my 4.6 out, i am debating pulling the front clip to get engine back in, i dont want to drain ac though.
If you're getting 200k + out of a engine and just replacing some parts thats not bad. I guess its like someone saying i have 500k in my chevy and its on its 2nd or third engine and transmission.
The 5.4 Triton just doesn't compare to the GM 5.3 V8. Follow manufacturer routine maintenance and it'll hit well over 500,000 miles before maintenance costs go up.
+kingpins9 dodge trk had same problems back in the 90s. When they did major design changes. Always stay clear of trk and car when they change the design of the car or trk. Seems like they don't fix the bugs when designing a new model of cars and trks.
If you can't take a wrench to it. Take a loosen the transmission mounts and motor mounts and Jack the tail housing of the transmission it should give you a little more room to get to the bolts. That's also with the drive shaft out already.,
+Ryan Richards Sure did. Thanks to Ford's (in my opinion) dumb idea of not giving a true engine oil pressure reading on the gauge, I could not tell the truck lost oil pressure until it was low enough to trigger the oil pressure switch.
+DanielJaegerFilms I've never understood that. Why even put a gauge if it does nothing!? In a lot of ways, old cars are so much better. Don't want to sound like an 89 year old man, but cmon ford... lol
+DanielJaegerFilms what is it 7 psi or something to close to switch and make the gauge go in the center? haha hook in a t fitting with an after market gauge so you can watch the new engine,, its out nows the time to build the set up
I have an 99 e150 and the sub floor is all rotted out. I'm in the south so no road salts involved. Ford doesn't do a very good job at rust proofing their steel when make them. On side note. They have thick ass paint. Almost reminds me of a ceramic bath tub coating thick.,
I have an 02 e250 and live up north, surprising mine aren't rotting out much(maybe because of the height increase on the 250). I actually started rust proofing it today and my frame has some flaking rust but my subfloor is very good. I also have wood down over carpet on the inside. I think mine also has some primer or paint underneath. Do if it was an issue on the older ones or I just got lucky
I see ur spring on your strut was broke on the passenger side it’s funny because I just replaced both of my strut assembly’s on my f150 and they broke the same as yours. The spring has a clean break at the bottom and it likes to jump over it that’s why it looks crossed
First, you really dont see THAT many gm 350s in the old hot rods. 2, it all depends on what state you're in. 3, GMs LS series is a copy of Fords small block. That is a known fact.
Stop your complaining. You bought a truck with a shitty engine that wasn’t well maintained. My dad has a 2007 f150 5.4L Triton and hasn’t had a problem with it in over 4 years. Some people don’t get the meaning of preventative maintenance...
is that a joke? dodge have shitty engines and transmissions and gm has garbage transmissions and average engines. ford 2 valve engines are great. same with the straight 6 and 5.0 v8 engine. ford has great drivetrains you are a follower lmaooo a dodge that shows how little you know about vehicles. followerrrrrrrr hahahahaha
supra6t9. i beg the differ. i had plenty of mod motors. work with ni issues. like to see you run with a fully built up 4.6 teksid engine they are capable over 1200rwhp
Cool video. I am getting ready to overhaul the front and rear ends on my 98 E150. I will be completed replacing the suspension and the rear axle will get a Traction Lok.
I have to say I have a 5.4 I have never had a problem with it it's actually amazing to me
And thats because of MAINTENANCE
You must have the 2v lolz
What all do you need to disconnect between the transmission/bell mouth? As we pull it, it seems to be snug.
Why are you replacing the radiator and condenser?
My biggest regret was sell my 99 5.4 2v, and got an 05 and 5.4 3v 200k miles later 2 phaser changes and oil pump that’s giving out, I miss my 2 valve engine
I have a 2002 5.4 with 35k on it and even though I have put only 2.5k on it I'm already loving the thing. Any Ford F-150 2004 or newer are more safer than the 97-03 F-150.
ATX-CVPI 2004 is when they started making safer trucks with a lot more room in them. The 2004 changed the game.
mrfayetteville91 it’s not the engine, it’s the person behind the wheel. People are not willing to maintain an engine properly.
how do i seperate the exhaust on the right side while removing the engine
Why is the motor so rusty? Is it because of being from up north? Aka road salts?
The body of that truck looks great for having 200K miles!
5.4 has issues, yes, and admittedly the Chevy is easier to work on. I own both. However, that Ford trans doesn't blow out the 3-4 clutches or fracture the shell at 70k like the 4l60E does it? Good video though. Our 5.4 has 166k on her right and runs well, but I was thinking ahead to when Ill need to rebuild her, and your video gave me some ideas. Thank you. :)
Considering the mileage it's definitely worth it to go ahead and replace anything that might wear out or fail from age while its easy to do.
Did you ever make a full step by step video of how to remove? Or a write up of any sort?
How did you get the engine disconnected from the tranny I’m doing a swap on my 2005 f150 and I’ve got all the bell housing bolts out along with the starter and it’s got ab an inch gap between the tranny and engine but can’t get it to come the rest of the way. What do I do?

Nice cummins logo on your hoist!
My motor in my ford did the same thing. Locked tighter then a drum

did the phaser lockouts give you any troublee with the cpu?
I've been a Ford engine mechanic for over 30 years, and can tell you that the 5.4 3 valve engines are plagued. They have several known issues.
thank you
Yes. Definitely plagued.
The 5.4 3v requires regular
Maintenance, especially oil changes. Yes a few design flaws, #1 the oil pump. #2 the oil galleys.
#3 the vct solenoids..
But if you keep oil changed regularly, you probably won't have any problems.
09 5.4 3v with 268k
Not a single issue .
My key to success is changing my oil regularly 3500 miles/ 5w30 synthetic.
Does the body have to be removed first?
so are you going with used engine or a remanufactured engine?
The Phaser Lockouts you mentioned are the issue. They masked the oil pressure issue. Phaser failure is a symptom, not the problem. If you don't determine why the phasers failed you are going to eventually have an engine failure.
How much did you originally pay for the truck?
Its not Fords fault that the engine is in such bad condition. We have the same truck, probably the same year, and the engine is SPOTLESS.
That'll be awhile, we take great care of our engines.
70's greatest rock bands / another Doctor Who fan his truck is a 2007
I was thinking road salts did this to this trk. That would explain the rust.
My 2005 has 160k plus. Only issue its had so far has been the alternator. Regular oil changes with synthetic for the win!
Although it’s a two valve engine in my 2000 f150 it has absolutely no rust on the motor or under carriage. Granted I also live in the south far from snow and salt air.
What are you going to school for? And did you have a manual to help you with this?
How much do you want for those extra cam phaser lockouts? Lol, the knocking is getting on my nerves.
there is no way you pulled engine an left motor mounts in place an no way you put engine back in with motor mounts on engine,I know because I just replaced a 5.4 on 2006 f150 an it was not like you showed on your video.
This might be a large favour to ask but are you able to do a basic step by step list? I'm about to do this exact thing!
I am actually about to buy a f150 2005 and need to do the same thing.
please make a step by step XD
I have a 2000 f-150. With 240k miles. Its thrown 3 plugs and first cylinder leaks water into it. Whats The best engine to replace it with? I worry just doing head gaskets would be a waste.
Rebuild your heads, do a timing job and oil pump, run it for another 240k.
i have a 94 gmc suburban k1500 whit 300,000 miles on it have the 5.7tbi AMD still pulling the tráiler whit my 4 wheelers :) viva le chevy
Where did you buy the engine
it got a refurb!
How do you put hood like that?
Good work
just put a new jasper in my 04 last week bought my 04 new put a 150000 miles on it and the roller rockers gave up tickin so loud and just a matter of time before one fell out and broke everything else up top when i put it back togeather i used stainless steel exhaust studs the manifolds were tickin too
what year?
Where did you buy your new engine?
How did you get the top bell housing bolts off I’m taking the engine out of my 98 Ford F-150
From the top with a ratchet wrench
Your right! I love Fords but, damn those engines were crap
Not even close.
So you got the factory installed rust. It is a free option but very expensive on the long run.
How hard is it to change a 4.2 out replace with 5.4? Will transmission and wiring harness fit?
no
Probably timing chain tensioner falling apart blocking oil return had same problem
My 05 has 220,000 and still going strong
Where in Missouri are You? I'm in kcmo
My dad gots a 99 Chevy Silverado it in awesome condition
Got a 02 chevy 2500HD with 350k not that well maintained and it still runs good

What class are you taking at school?
Where did u get your new motor I need one for my truck
Go to junkyard. These engines are all over the place
God damn this is some high rez video GEEZ~! What camera are you using man ?
Do you think running a high quality oil and regular oil changes would have gotten this another 100K?
+sms373 Oh absolutely yes. The previous owner of this truck did not maintain it well, and I bought the truck fully aware of that.
+DanielJaegerFilms what do you consider high quality oil? Do you recommend synthetic or is conventional adequate for regular 3000 mile changes
+David Mollard i would recommend castrol synthetic
+Ricardo Lupian These motors are extremely sensitive to oil and oil pressure. Only run motorcraft synthetic blend 5w-20 and an absolute must is a motorcraft oil filter as well.

How did you get to the 2 top bolts to the transmission? It seems to tight for a ratchet.
Tim Hannah ...
Take the plastic intake manifold off as it needs to come off anyways. Once that is off, you can easily get the two bolts at the top from topside

Is that a truck that was driven on salted roads all its life? Because no joke, the trucks in Houston junkyards aren't that rusted out.
good oil and changes every 3000 miles is key on these engines and some luck lmao and upgrade to the melling oil pump be sure to do that
Don't be sorry lol, anyone who's being honest never wants to deal with a 3 valve Triton. The 2 valve is a lot better, but the spark plug issues and intake / exhaust manifold issues are still a pain. Just ask me how I know lol. Even in northern Canada I never got that much corrosion!
if they are maintained there really a good engine
hey l have 2005 f250 5.4 truck engine its gone, do you think the 2004 5.4 engine fit on 2005 5.4
Carlos Ayala why wouldn't it
Should fit. Call ford and ask for parts dept they can tell you.
was it easier to remove the 3 bolts on engine or the whole motor mount?

Anyone here have a problem swapping engines? I swapped a 08 to a 07 and getting codes p0345 and p0349. It’s a headache and burning money
Hi do you need to remove the starter to remove the engine?
The rust and corrosion are hardly the fault of the engine or the manufacturer. That's environment.
You don't have to take lights out ! I have done that job many times don't follow this video
wanna help me remove 2 5.4 2vs with transmissions lol
I have a 4..6 ford truck can I swap it with a 5.4
Yes
they are a major pain in the ass to get out separate the tranny and take the cowl off it helps a lot

If you anything about motors chevy Los motors copied fords 351 Cleveland.
Can’t watch every hell raiser movie on brake time distraction will occur when you use chains ⛓

Lue Morales removing the entire intake manifold will allow you to remove the upper bolts from the tranny and block.

+jason127x99 make sure once the bolts are loose to lower the transmission so you can relieve the pressure off the motor and transmission.
Did you figure out if it was the oil pump?

+DanielJaegerFilms I've never understood that. Why even put a gauge if it does nothing!? In a lot of ways, old cars are so much better. Don't want to sound like an 89 year old man, but cmon ford... lol

The ford 3V engines were complete junk. But I would keep the 3V before I would ever go to a GM engine. YUCK
Than why do old ford classic hot rods have 350 in them? I see it all the time????? Do tell????
jason127x99 because the 350's are cheap and easy.

The 5.4L Triton V8 is without a doubt one of the worst engines Ford ever made
Chevys 7.2 I believe it a diesel motor are junk. Ford 5.0 and Chevy 350 are the best motors both companies ever made.
the 5.4 triton is a great engine just dont get the 3 valve version of it. 2 valve tritons are solid
Should have got a Dodge or a gm
is that a joke? dodge have shitty engines and transmissions and gm has garbage transmissions and average engines. ford 2 valve engines are great. same with the straight 6 and 5.0 v8 engine. ford has great drivetrains you are a follower lmaooo a dodge that shows how little you know about vehicles. followerrrrrrrr hahahahaha
should've gotten an older tundra man .-.
Fred Flintstone that would be cool if he could mount a toyota tundra engine in that thing. He'd have it forever.
Yeah, thengines don't rust, the frames do.
This truck is not worth dumping that much money into
you need to buy a new car

I would go back with a small block chevy. Either an LS or old school. it would be a good truck then
No...that would be gay
What is gay about it? They last longer, they are more reliable, and won't leave you sitting
