    Carter is truly ambidextrous, giving him some very rare abilities as a drummer. Also note where he holds the sticks with a very relaxed grip at the very butt end, adding an additional 4"ish inches to his reach, giving him relaxed, effortless speed throughout the entire kit. The reduction in bounce-back from holding the stick at the butt end makes very clean, defined ghost notes rather than buzz notes, which he uses on nearly every instrument in the kit, not just the snare. He is by far the most unique and unconventional of my list of favorite drummers.

  • @dreamyuyi
    @dreamyuyi 4 роки тому +15

    He played drums that way (open), because when he was a child he learned to play drums watching television and by that time the image was not corrected (mirror effect), so he put together his kit as if he were left-handed. Hence it is that he acquired such dexterity in his left hand.
    Cheers, nice channel!

    So funny how you mention DMB never took off internationally, I just had that conversation with a friend of mine from UK. He lived in the States for high school, and couldn't escape DMB. Happy to say we converted him to a huge DMB fan! They were a behemoth here in the States for 20 some years,. I believe they were the highest grossing tour act from 2000 - 2010, incredibly popular, especially known for their live shows. Just a terrific band. And Carter is the absolute pinnacle. Dave often refers to him as "the engine" that makes the band run. This video really shows us why.
    A few other DMB songs (where Carter really shines) I recommend if you want to be blown away more, : The Stone, Drive in Drive Out, JTR.

Very percussionist approach, not just keep time and back beat. The band overall is very talented musicians. Dave is a tremendous rhythm guitarist. Very creative and plays often in a very "percussive " style and sort of strumming hand muted notes which adds a very rhythmic feel and timing on the solo acoustic tracks. Great reaction video!

      Andrew Rooney Drums I use to be a huge DMB fan but I’m not a drummer at all. The way I use to describe it to people, in my neophyte way, is that Carter basically hits the snare every four beats, but then EVERYTHING in between those beats is improv. It’s insane to watch live.

    3:03 Actually he rides left-handed as well as the hi hats. His (2) rides are directly above the hats. He’s absolutely an open-handed rhythm legend.

    Fun fact: Carter is left handed but very ambidextrous that's why his open handed playing is so good.

      Late reply, but I'm not sure he is left handed, he explains in a dvd, that he first saw a drummer when he was 3, so set up drum kit in front of a mirror to copy his favorite drums, and at that age not realizing that the mirror made everything he was doing opposite to them, he then realized when older, so set the kit up the right way round and learnt to lead with his right hand, thus accidentally becoming ambidextrous.

    So Carter uses his kit to enhance the breaks, the build ups and break downs. He is well know for his syncopated rhythms. As a correction, he plays ride on his left. He has a nice bell ride and a flat top jazz ride on his left. What he plays on the high right are 2 chinas. Bottom china is turned upside down. He sets it high so he can play it with the middle of the stick to get the bottom chinas sound. Just an awesome musician. Thanks for your video
