Hey there really enjoy your channel. Would love to see you react to Ram Jam Black Betty. This song has been making the rounds on UA-cam lately. Would be great to get a musicians perspective. Thanks party on 👍🏻😎
Tool, is exactly like them. Creative. Progressive and spiritual. Neil and Danny Carey were close. Neils influence in Danny Carey’s drumming is unmistakable. Danny even did a tribute to, Neil Peart, on stage with Tool.
Lifelong Rush fan since the '70's, and back in the day, we never used the term "prog" to describe Rush, they rocked too hard and too loud for that, especially live. The prog label is a recent thing. They were just RUSH.
@@ricardocastillo5485 Right about that. I I think that label came up in the 2000’s bc they couldn’t otherwise be defined commercially. Their 70’s work was just rock, the next generation of led zeppelin and the like, and they perpetually evolved for the next 40 years.
This is a great example of Rush's ability to draw a straight line through multiple time signature changes without it sounding off. It starts in 4/4, then to 7/4, then to 3/4, then to 6/4. It alternates between those four times for the rest of the song. The end of the guitar solo is great, with the song in 3/4 (which Geddy and Alex are playing) and Neil playing 4/4 over them. Classic!
It's great you all know your time signatures😂, but you make the classic mistake of forgetting the song. Signatures make the song interesting. You're have to connect with the audience on the basic 4/4 level and get them to identify with it. Most don't know a 4/4 from a 3/4. I don't care how technicall you are. Rush was always successful at bridging the gap and getting people to relate to the song . Mick
Couple years late but... The biggest thing with Rush is always "how is this 3 people?" If you play Rush for someone, NO ONE, would guess it's 3 people. The depth from each of them is immense and part of what Rush fans love.
Rush taught me division. When i was 7 i heard this song for the first time. I said "there must be 6 people in this band", my dad stopped the song and said "Whats half of 6?", i replied "3", he said "Now you know how many members are in Rush, and how to divide by 2", my jaw dropped...
I think these lyrics are more about the separation between the true self and the stage self/persona -- something that was mined to a great extent by performers like Kiss, Bowie, Iggy Pop etc., in the '70s but that's just my interpretation. Check out Scorsese's "King of Comedy" if you want to get into celebrity and narcissism. That resonates today -- so much it's scary.
Welcome to the Rush community! Those of us in the United States and Canada are fortunate to have witnessed these men rise from kick a** blues based rock to a rock unique, progressive, mythical status. Their first album rocked out hard, showing Alex and Geddy to be incredibly talented already in their late teens and early twenties! Once Neil came aboard the game was changed entirely. The album 2112 was a permanent life altering experience for anyone who played modern rock music. I was among the millions of drummers who was absolutely floored and devastated by Neil Peart. His influence is still present in my playing forty years later. I’m literally a different person for having listened and been influenced by this force of sonic sophistication. Their music helped to shape the man I am today. Thanks for offering your perspective! 👍
For me NP isn’t a drummer; he’s a percussionist, similar to Mark Nauseef, if anybody has heard of him? A top flight drummer would be a Cozy Powell, Bonzo or Brian Downey from Thin Lizzy?
... you think Geddy laid down the bass tracks and keyboard tracks separately in the studio until you see Rush live and realize to your astonishment that the man actually has four arms.
If you look at Alex’s foot at the end of his solo. He’s using a makeshift analog looper to let the “tail” continue while he puts the cherry on top. Then you see him turn it off when the vocals come back in and he does that little hop thing. These guys were figuring out stuff like this before they even went wireless.
The damn best band ever. I like lots of bands, but these guy were (and still are in my heart) something special. Powerful music, even more powerful lyrics. I miss these men.
Your an old dude like me but your just finding out about Rush? New Zealand must be on another planet 🌏. You’ve got to play the studio stuff to appreciate the clean tasty 😋 vibes. Been listening to Rush since 1976 and every time I hear a song it sounds like the first time. It never gets old listening to the worlds best trio of musicians god ever created!! Thank you Rush for making the world a better place
Geddy had an absolutely wonderful voice. Flawless and effortless maturity in his phrasing in what is NOT an easy song to sing. Perhaps the tightest band to ever grace a stage. No better threesome in rock history.
When Rush does time signature changes, it's never to be pretentious, cooler-than-the-audience intellectual types. The time signature changes always serve and enhance the emotional content and flow effortlessly so most people don't consciously realize it, which is the best.
Really cool to see Alex doing the effects on the solo himself. It has so many layers and it’s done brilliantly. Nobody ever talks about the bassline under that solo.
The greatest band ever and most talented musicians i have seen in my life . And now the professor is gone we will never see these play together again. I don't why god took Mr. Peart away from us at an early age. I guess the only way I could understand why was that the good lord was starting a rockband and he wanted the best damm drummer on this world. Neil Peart i will never forget you as long as i live thank you for the great music you left us with.
Rush rock in their own groove, whatever that groove might be!! I think they did what they wanted, and as musicians, that's the highest achievement. to fulfill your art...
Limelight is a song that is FORTY (40) years old. And it is as fresh today as it was FORTY years ago. Song after song has the same effect/affect. Great lyrics, great music, amazing sound with three band members and kicking ass and rocking out jaming riffs. They are THE band in my lifetime. Miss Neil a lot - RIP. Miss Geddy and Alex a lot too. They seem to have disappeared. The BEST EVER!!
Rush is famously described as "Your favourite band's favourite band." They have their loyal fanbase, but seemed to fall short of the commercial success that the bands they influenced achieved. Fantastic musicians as individuals, magnificent as a group, and most importantly, loyal to each other for more than 40 years. They had a connection that every other band wishes they could replicate. You've often seen it with pairs - Lennon/McCartney, Jagger/Richards - but not as a trio. It even more rare that a singer will sing someone else's lyrics with the same voice as if they had wrote the lyrics themselves. It was truly, in every sense of the word, three minds working as a collective, for the best of the songs and the music as a whole.
Took a hot minute, but I think you might be getting it, Rush a TON to offer musically, amazing stuff really. I was a professional drummer for a decade, mostly studio, hired gun stuff, a couple of bands but that was before you time, actually not too long after this song was released! Music Scholarship and all that, yet you can say prog rock, sure, but so many of their tunes aren't, and after 40 years of albums and tours, there is a whole lot more to Rush than MOST people know...glad your starting to get it, not yet, but you'll get there!
Had the immense privilege of seeing them live in 2002. It was out of this world. It was their 1st ever show in Brazil, there were people crying and hugging each other when they came onstage, probably the loudest and tighest rock concert I've ever been to as well. Masters of their craft.
I'm 60 and back when they came out, they kind of bridged that Zeppelin/Who/Aerosmith rocker sound with the ELO/Genesis/Jethro Tull sort of Prog rock sound. Rush was the only prog band whose albums I looked forward to and bought on Day One. Saw them a couple of times live, and was blown away by their musicality and Pert's drumming, but also by the legion of fans up front and all over with glow sticks playing air drums along with Neill for the entire show. I saw many concerts in the 70's but Rush's show was unique. Still listening to them often 45 years later...
It is always a joy, and often spiritually uplifting, just reading the comments made by Rush fans. I could say that we're quite an articulate bunch, but it really goes way beyond that.
Glad you made it back to Rush! The Exit Stage Left concert album sounds exactly like the studio cuts. These guys are flawless, and, as you said, are able to enjoy playing their songs at the same time. Crazy talent! I agree with Chaz - Freewill is a must (along with 1M others). I hope you're catching the lyrics that Neil produced as well. A lot of his work remains relevant to then and now. Timeless messages for all. We are looking forward to your next video breakdown. Cheers from Florida~
Neil plays what would easily take any other band 2 drummers to play; he rarely just settles into a standard time signature. Alex almost always plays various versions of open and/or arpeggiated chords so there are multiple notes ringing out in addition to his pedals adding effects (notice that realllllly long note that just sustained itself right at the end of his solo until he turned off the delay at the next chorus?) Geddy also performs triple duty on bas/vocals and keyboards. So.... yeah... Rush sounds like a 5 piece band at the very least!
Been growing with your channel and I’m so happy to see you getting 30k subs! You fill a niche on UA-cam I think where you react to so many classic songs and provide the perspective of a drums teacher. As an aspiring drummer, it’s invaluable to return to a channel such as yours every couple of days. Also - I’m a Bonham fanboy but have recently been getting into Rush as well. Peart is a monster!!!
This piece is written in 4:4 and then drops to 3:4, then 2:4, back to 4:4 and back and forth. The time changes are near impossible to pick up, but that's what the sheet music shows :)
Canada has produced a plethora of talent - Gretzky being the greatest athlete ever. Pam Anderson, Molson, Lana Taylor. I could go on but you get my point. Thank you Canada 🇨🇦for making the world a better place !! This from your neighbor in America 🇺🇸
Makes up for Celine Dion, Bieber, Ultraslut Pam Anderson, Alan Thicke and getting a goddamned Canadian nickel in my change. Canadia is a land of contrasts.
You want to talk about 3 people making a wall of sound, check out Freewill. During the solo section it basically becomes an "everyone take over" scenario and it's just amazing.
I love the anthem of the Rush newbie..."I can't believe that's just three guys!" They all say it, and it's glorious! There is a bootleg of their Grace Under Pressure album that is titled "That's a lot of noise for three guys"
Love seeing true honest reaction. Brought me to tears when Geddy said, "We are merely players. Each another's audience" Heard it 1000s of times, but this time with Mr. Rooney watching for the first time, it was like it was new. Thank you.
Most people say that they can't believe its 3 guys!! Alot of the fullness of their sound is that Geddy and sometimes Alex play keyboard swells with their feet to fill in the voids. They have pre programmed chords on pedals. Very impressive!
This was the song and album that really first made me a Rush fan. The song got a lot of FM radio airplay when it was released as a single here in Canada, as did Tom Sawyer. Moving Pictures is really a perfect album. No weak spots at all. (Although, it’s pretty hard to find weaknesses on any of their albums, IMO.) After you’ve done the isolated track, you should have a listen to Digital Man, from the Signals album, especially the isolated drum & bass track. That song blends their prog & reggae influences really well.
They make progressive rock very easy to digest. The use of "odd" time signatures and transitions are seamless; not jarring or forced. You often don't notice in a casual listen...
That pop flare, the unusual lyrics, the prog stuff. Everything together makes them unique. I always enjoyed the pop aspect of their music. They have very poignant songs that manage to stay interesting, personal and accessible. I don't know how to go on without repeating the same thing over again..
Nods and from Rush world. Have seen them live a few times and it’s was an amazing event. Neil’s lyrics and intellectual parts for each moment of the song are second to none. Brilliant as always my good man and love the channel
Btw, according to Neil just after guitar solo we have him playing in 4/4 while geddy and Alex are in 3/4. 2 time signatures going on over the top of each other. WTH (what the heck)
im glad you finally found them holy crap, was 11 or 12 when i first heard that song, made the hair stand up on my arms and was this way ever since greetings fro m michigan usa
Rush is more than “just a band”… true musicians who “Did it their way”! Will we ever see anything like this love of music and it’s intricacies, music history, love of the fans, and professionalism ever again??? Rush is truly a forever musical group. There is nothing like them. 🙏🥰❤️
Great analysis of a masterful, spirited performance! I think you could make the argument that the 7/4 sections are actually a 4/4 + 3/4 group. The hi-hat work in this song is crazy, this Exit Stage Left version is nearly perfect.
I see Andrew release a Rush reaction, I click and I like before the video even begins. Looking forward to the isolated drum track reaction. As good as this live performance is, it’s hard to hear all the nuances in his playing. Would really love to see you work the song Jacob’s Ladder into your Rush schedule. In-cred-i-ble drumming.
Saw RUSH in 1981 on this tour. they played the entire show because the opening band Max Webster broke up an hour before the show. 4 hours with only a 30 minute break. They played songs that they had not played in a while without rehersal. This was at Mobile Civic Center in Alabama
This was a band of 3 men that truly loved and respected one another. When Neil Peart's daughter died in 97 and he wife did soon after. He stopped playing for a year or so. RUSH didn't perform with another drummer. They waited for him to grieve and get himself together. Then when he was ready and came back, the performed again. As a side note. Neil Peart is this bands second drummer. The first one left after the first album. From then on until his death (40 years later) they always (lovingly) referred to Neil Peart as "the new guy".
I can’t help it ... I still shed a tear when I think how we lost Neil Peart too soon. Choked up ... And by the way, travelled North to South Island years ago in a camper van, skied at Mount Hutt in June ... love the Kiwi people.
Something I really like about this particular video is that it is edited so well. The cameras hit places so that you notice a lot of little things like Neil's little rolls he does and Alex stepping on his effects. Then there is Getty, being Getty. I'm sure they had some background people working on sounds but what is amazing is that most of the sounds were made by them on stage. Making them sound like a BUNCH of people. ALL of them very intelligent and talented when it came to making music and entertaining the masses.
It actually was just the three guys at all times - fir sine songs they had bass pedals and keyboard peddles - depending on whether Geddy was focused on bass or keyboards.
Thats why He was called the Professor, He took everybody to school. Neil was the G.O.A.T. He was so much more than just a great drummer, he was easily one of the greatest lyricists of all time. Check out The Trees from Rush, so good. One of My other top 5 drummers is Danny Carrey from Tool, Dude is incredible.. He is like Neil as well plays polyphonic drums.
Thank you ADR !👍🙏 Rush is simple buuut no other band can ever hit the heart inside you like these 3. Never again will you hear such sweet music. Keep cueing them up on youtube or cd .
One of the things I love about Rush is that their songs carry deep meaning, but at the same time utterly ROCK OUT while doing it. It's not just sex/drugs and the other typical subject matter of most rock songs. So much talent in musicianship, song writing and composition and still really down to earth 'regular guys' at the same time. Just WQW!
Cool video. I saw them live 19 times. (1982/2015) they put on a great show. This video shows them at their best. In 1981, they were one of the biggest bands.
"Living in a fisheye lens, caught in the camera eye, I have no heart to lie, I can't pretend a stranger is a long-awaited friend"! And, "Glittering prizes and endless compromises, shatter the illusion of integrity"(The Spirit of Radio)! These are two of my favorite lyrics that Neil Peart wrote! RIP NP! Check out "Temples of Syrinx" of 2112, when Rush played "Rock in Rio".
love the lead and seamless transition from Alex's lead back into chorus. the progression of this band from 1974 until this album was a phenom. exponential growth... every album was different and their sound got more and more their own and unique. Love Rush. I sat 5th row at the Capital Center for this tour. Red Barchetta and the movie screen behind them was new and a big hit with the crowd.
Glad you found them, enjoy 😊. Got too see them on this tour and many others, before and after. Some as small as 6,000 seat. The tightest three piece ever, I believe. ✌️
New to the channel and I enjoy your content. As a fellow musician, I actually paid for my college thru music. I was in and award winning jazz band, I can appreciate all the hard work that it takes to try to master your craft. With that said... I have another “rabbit hole” for you to venture down. Genesis! They were great in the day. Nowhere near what rush was but still a great band.
Two bands come to mind that were able to achieve that prog sound in short songs that were also radio friendly. Coincidentally another two bands I love...YES and KANSAS. But no one ever did it quite as good as RUSH.
No band has brought me musical joy like Rush. You can't help but feel better after listening to a Rush songs. Just great guys, great musicians, making great music.
This is one of the greatest live performances you could ever witness. The power, dynamism and mastery are unbelievable. Lifeson's guitar tones alone are... wow. I'm too young to have seen them here in '81. Don't know whether I would have stood there paralysed and slack-jawed or cried with joy had I seen this live. Maybe a mixture of both!
I’m enjoying your discovery journey. Having been a local Ontario Rush fan (yes, it’s just different when they’re from the same place you are) for over 40 years it’s nice to see them appreciated as they always deserved to be. There were a lot of years where you had to defend them and they didn’t get played on the radio. Please try and react to something from the last decade of their career. Working Man from the Time Machine tour or Freewill from the same show. YYZ or Headlong Flight from the Clockwork Angels tour will showcase them at their absolute peak of musicianship. They didn’t fade at the end. They got better! They played harder and it was a privilege to be in the room every chance I could. Enjoy, mate!
You might not have noticed that there is a synth kind of underneath. It is most noticeable during the solo and towards the end. That is Geddy playing pedals while playing basel i dont remember if Alex plays them while Geddy sings.
“Each the others audience/Outside the gilded cage...” I love watching people who are unfamiliar with Rush discovering them for the first time. Rush’s level of mastery lends itself to shocked silence. Then the inevitable cries of, “Wait? This band has been around almost 50yrs and I’m just discovering them now?!? Then you have the wails of envy at people like my self who saw them live almost two dozen times. Including the 1981 tour when they played KC. I was about 15ft from Alex in the third row towards stage right. Stoned out of mind and loving every second of it!🤟🏽🤟🏽🤟🏽
Rush are a genre on their own. No other band like them. Best ever in my book.
Agree 💖

Neil's lyrics also foresaw the narcissistic, celebrity-obsessed age we live in today. A prophet as well as a poet.
All due respect I loved Neil's percussion....but more like a profit and a poet. Those record companies made millions and millions off of Rush
R.I.p. Neil Peart one of best drummers ever.
This is truly one of their greatest songs, lyrically and musically.

How the hell Geddy does what he does with the bass while also singing and engaging the crowd....wow, man. Just wow. For all three of them.
You forgot Geddy played the organ, electric piano, synthesizer, base and double neck (12) string guitar and sung. Love live F’n Rush!
Neil perfected the “in the round” drum set up, in Tom Sawyer he perfected the flying cross over of his arms.
You are correct, Niel is and will remain the professor of drums and will hold the title of the best drummer ever!

Well said!
And even if he settles in a time signature he still tweaks them with variances to make it unique
Almost like a 7-piece at times!
That solo with the held note sustained then played over it as it keeps going is undoubtedly one of the greatest moments in recorded music. 💯
Don't forget Taurus pedal synthesizers.
Having seen RUSH back in the late 80’s, they were an incredible band. I love reaction vids just for RUSH
Rofi!
I think you were my first Patron!?
Thumbs up before the video even started!!! RUSH!!!!!!!!!!!!
WAHOO
This piece is written in 4:4 and then drops to 3:4, then 2:4, back to 4:4 and back and forth. The time changes are near impossible to pick up, but that's what the sheet music shows :)
And that is why Canada rocks god bless these boys .
Canada has produced a plethora of talent - Gretzky being the greatest athlete ever. Pam Anderson, Molson, Lana Taylor. I could go on but you get my point. Thank you Canada 🇨🇦for making the world a better place !! This from your neighbor in America 🇺🇸
You can take back Bieber, he’s a puss
@@yoyomamamma2260 🤣
Makes up for Celine Dion, Bieber, Ultraslut Pam Anderson, Alan Thicke and getting a goddamned Canadian nickel in my change. Canadia is a land of contrasts.
You want to talk about 3 people making a wall of sound, check out Freewill. During the solo section it basically becomes an "everyone take over" scenario and it's just amazing.
Thanks Chaz!
Rumor has it, Eddy Van Halen warmed up to that solo part
Has been called the greatest minute in rock more than once.
Solo section of Freewill is best 2 or so minutes in prog rock, IMO.
First album I ever bought was Permanent Waves, I was 13 and Freewill blew my fucking mind!!!! And, of course, Jacobs Ladder.😊
After many years listening , brilliantly made !! Timeless !
!
Dig it!
I love the anthem of the Rush newbie..."I can't believe that's just three guys!" They all say it, and it's glorious! There is a bootleg of their Grace Under Pressure album that is titled "That's a lot of noise for three guys"
I was going to say this but I figured I should check to see if someone else said it first.
Just unbelievable. It sounds so dynamic, full and fresh 40 years on. Kings among men and musicians.
100% Dave!
Loving it watching you discover the genius that was/is Rush, great analysis
Much appreciated!
Hardly anyone can believe that much sound comes out of but 3 people.
Triumph does it as well.
Thumbs up for those Rockin' Canadians! 👍🎵
"I can't believe this is three people..." - The most apt description ever.......
This was the song and album that really first made me a Rush fan. The song got a lot of FM radio airplay when it was released as a single here in Canada, as did Tom Sawyer. Moving Pictures is really a perfect album. No weak spots at all. (Although, it’s pretty hard to find weaknesses on any of their albums, IMO.)
After you’ve done the isolated track, you should have a listen to Digital Man, from the Signals album, especially the isolated drum & bass track. That song blends their prog & reggae influences really well.
Can't wait to check it out Mark!

They make progressive rock very easy to digest. The use of "odd" time signatures and transitions are seamless; not jarring or forced. You often don't notice in a casual listen...
100% Mike!
A great example of that is "Freewill"...it's a kick@ss rocking tune, but then you realise most of it is in weird combinations of 6/4, 7/4 and 6/8!
That pop flare, the unusual lyrics, the prog stuff. Everything together makes them unique. I always enjoyed the pop aspect of their music. They have very poignant songs that manage to stay interesting, personal and accessible. I don't know how to go on without repeating the same thing over again..
Nailed it Julien.
It's almost like 'Pop' is a dirty word. Great Pop is GREAT!!
Brilliant ! Thank you for this. My favorite single minute of Rush is 3:00 to 4:00 of Freewill. Nothing more thrilling than that. Thanks again.
Excellent Bruce! 🙌
Hell yes! Let's hope Andrew's gets around to it - and the remainder of the album ;-)
Nods and from Rush world. Have seen them live a few times and it’s was an amazing event. Neil’s lyrics and intellectual parts for each moment of the song are second to none. Brilliant as always my good man and love the channel
Thanks as always for the support Rob!
Great reaction as usual, Rush is their own genre of music, that’s what makes them so special. Still waiting for Rush Week patiently 😎🎧🔥
Thanks so much Jim! Doin' my best!!!
As am I Jim, as am I. I want this band to get as much recognition as they can across the world. Boy, they deserve it!
Btw, according to Neil just after guitar solo we have him playing in 4/4 while geddy and Alex are in 3/4. 2 time signatures going on over the top of each other. WTH (what the heck)
NICE! Yup I concur
Alex Lifeson is such a trip, always full of energy and enjoying the moment.
💯🙌
im glad you finally found them holy crap, was 11 or 12 when i first heard that song, made the hair stand up on my arms and was this way ever since greetings fro

I really enjoy Rush music. I'm especially impressed by Neil. And when I learned he wrote most of the lyrics I knew he was a genius.
Rush is more than “just a band”… true musicians who “Did it their way”! Will we ever see anything like this love of music and it’s intricacies, music history, love of the fans, and professionalism ever again??? Rush is truly a forever musical group. There is nothing like them. 🙏🥰❤️
The answer is no, we never will. What a blessing for so many of us to have had the opportunity to experience Rush in real time.
I feel it! You are definitely hooked on this band. Explore more!
You should have seen them in 1982 live on stage like I did. Three musicians who filled the amphitheater like a group of six. Fabulous.
When you were young, you just loved them. Now you realize how technically incredible each member was.
I love your reaction you can’t help but smile cause rush is AWESOME!
Thank you Paul!
Oh nice! I had no idea you too were in NZ, before clicking on your video! 😀
Hey! You a Kiwi?
@@AndrewRooneyDrums - Been for the past 17 years or so. Originally German 😀
This was the song and video that got me hooked on Rush forever. Gracias "Fuera de Foco" y UCV Televisión!!
It makes me glad that people are still finding and becoming fans of Rush. Enjoy.
Great stuff Donald
Ahhh......
That beautiful red double-bass kit.......
Got me feeling nostalgic.......
I get chills listening to Rush. Just love them.
I love the way your smile kept growing!
🙌💯
So good. Thanks Andrew 🙏🏼🙏🏼
Glad you enjoyed it James!
Considered one of their best if not the best. Every song on the record was radio played.. every one.
Mesmerizing aren't they; the most talented rock musicians in history, all together in one band, pure magic.
Indeed, this song is a staple of classic rock radio.
I dont think we'll ever see another band like this in our lifetime.
I am sure it won' t never happen again. Rush rules!!
Masterpiece from 3 professionals! Can’t get any better!
I get chills, every time I hear this song.
LOVE IT
Energy of youth ! Well said 🎈 All the Worlds a Stage
Love it when you do RUSH!! Keep em coming!! You should check out “By-Tor and the Snowdog from the same show! Be well and God Bless... from Texas!!
How a three member band could sound sooooo amazing live.
You might not have noticed that there is a synth kind of underneath. It is most noticeable during the solo and towards the end. That is Geddy playing pedals while playing basel i dont remember if Alex plays them while Geddy sings.
Seeing them Live in Concert was phenomenal. Saw them 4 times. The 2112 tour is still VERY clear in my memory :)
