Since singing is an auditory activity, it's hard for me to know exactly what you're doing without hearing you and working with you in a lesson. There could be several causes and reasons why you're experiencing this, and it wouldn't be ethical of me to guess and send you in the wrong direction.
Hi! I used to be a professional choral singer, but I stopped a few years back because of some persistent vocal trouble (technique related, I'm pretty sure, though I thought it must have been medical at the time). I'm now trying to get my voice back into shape, and I feel like your exercises are really helping me start to find my voice again. Thank you!
After two days I started to improve. The transition down from falsetto to head voice was especially helpful; instead of trying to force air up from chest to head, I learned to aim for falsetto with a lighter flow of air and land in head voice with just a slight bit of extra air. Once I started to get how it feels and where it's placed, it started to come naturally very quickly.
Thank you so much for your lessons, they have helped me develop my stamina in head voice. Gigs are becoming easier to maintain vocal consistency as well as recover from. Greatly appreciated.
Thank you very much. This channel is actually teaches your right away without too much talks to promote their teaching. Michael McDonald (Doobie Bros) said that he uses a lot of head voice. I discovered my head voice by chance 1 year ago and I didn't even know what that's called. The whole world of singing opened up to me. Some songs I have to go up 2 steps to satisfy my vocal range. The song This Masquerade by Karen Carpenters in the key of Fm is now within my range, though I am still improving my technique. Curiously when I moved to Houston, I stop practicing for 9 months, and when I began to practice again, I lost my head voice for not knowing what it is and how to get back there. LOL I've struggled for few weeks before it eventually returned to me. Now I know what is head voice and will remember how to use it when needed. Also I realize singing while standing is much better than playing drum and sing same time while sitting, duh! Hi Spencer, Thank you so much for these amazing and informative videos. Currently, my head voice goes up to a G5. I wanted to know that if I practise these exercises on a regular basis, would I be able to access the 6th octave? Looking forward to your answer. Thank you.
OK so I'm assuming your voice has already changed. It's a 10 year process for the male voice to settle after it changes at puberty so be patient with your vocal development. I'd have to hear you and work with you in a lesson to be able to comment about your question. Different voices have different abilities and needs. In general, it is very rare for a male voice to be able to stretch up into the 6th octave. Try it, but put more focus on improving your coordination and tone within the range you already have. I often say, "Give me half the range and twice the quality."
@@SpencerWelchVocalStudio Thank you for your response! I do feel that my voice has undergone the change however it isn't settled yet. I can sing till a D5 in mixed voice (sometimes F5s but they're strained so I guess we should leave them) however it feels awkward that my head voice reaches just 3 notes above D5
Actually F5 is a pretty great range! Most of the advanced male singers I work with can only sing up to F or G5 and sometimes only in exercises. Those aren't very useful notes in songs, so you should stretch up into them for exercising and then focus on the notes the octave below that to make your voice smooth, rich, and free.

Spencer, you videos are great and the dopey sounds really help enhance the exercises/vocal range. Could you please share some exercises for belting from chest to mixed. My voice cracks a lot when making the shift, specially when coming down. Thanks.
Do you have any advice on how to sound good when recording with no proper mic? I always sound strange every time I try to record, It sounds different from when I hear my own voice...
Yes, most singers need to know what their head voice is first in order to then mix it with their chest voice. A simple explanation is that mix voice is heavier than head voice, but lighter than chest voice. Check out this video for more of an explanation: Finding Your Mix Voice ua-cam.com/video/DzXkKKPPQ1k/v-deo.html
Yes, it really works. Both your Head Voice exercise video and Mix Voice video are more efficient than others' channels because of not too many exercises and all are meant for full range. I love it. I can catch all the exercises but not beautiful yet. I feel like my voice is weak. How do I fix it? Should I lower the larynx more? Should I change my speaking habit too?

Thank you Spencer for your exercises that made me like my head voice but I still feel like I'm just able to make these sounds with so little volume... When I try to use my head voice louder I always use much breath and there lacks the true power of head voice I really need a stronger and louder head voice for a perfect mix. Please help me

@@SpencerWelchVocalStudioseeing this comment three years later, I can say that my head voice is a lot more powerful now, thank you! I'll continue doing these exercises so I could reduce the strain and learn proper technique in doing so
So is head voice simply a higher version of chest voice?? I'm so confused when people say "Don't force chest voice like head voice" while I'm having a hard time diffrentiating between the two as a whole
I can understand how it could be confusing trying to learn this on your own. Feel free to book a lesson so I can show you the difference and give you specific feedback about what you are doing
My suggestion is sing along with the exercises as they are presented here, since I have taken great care to sequence them in a way that will help the most amount of people possible. Of course, everyone is different so not everything will work for everyone. If something doesn't work, feel free to skip it or book a lesson with me so that I can help make a modified, personalized workout for you.
So I found I could sing some of the songs I’ve been struggling with on this trill with no strain at all. What is going on here? But it does seem to require a whole lot of breath. Is there a way of making use of this trill to actual singing? What is happening here?
Yes, SOVT exercises feed positive acoustic energy back into the vocal cords, helping them to operate efficiently with less muscular effort. You can run through a melody first on a lip trill and then with the lyrics, but keep in mind that lip trills make singing easier than actual singing. It's like learning how to ride a bike with training wheels.
Why is transitioning up and down through these resonances possible (i.e. so easy) with this exercise without the break on the lip trill exercise? The voice isn’t getting stuck in chest voice and it doesn’t seem to be cracking ascending or descending.
That's why lip trills are amazing! They are part of the exercise category called semi-occluded vocal tract (SOVT) exercises where a partial closure in your mouth assists the vibration of your vocal cords.
Yeah, goes to show that a) some songs are far harder than most singing exercises and b) just because you can sing up to a high note in an exercise doesn't mean you've mastered that range. These are beginner to intermediate level exercises in this video, but for an advanced song (like just about ANY one by Bruno Mars) you would need to graduate to advanced exercises.
If your heart is set on singing that song, you would benefit from personal coaching. If you don't already have a vocal coach, I can be reached at: www.spencerwelch.com/book-now
Thanks for your suggestion! You can receive months of head voice training that is specific to your needs, when you sign up for my program Singing Ignition: www.singingignition.com
Oh Great you replied to my comment.. thank you so much… I can’t sing anything above E… so I thought there should be a trick… your videos making a lot of sense to me and I’m practice those exercises now
Was the Female Mix Voice Workout helpful, or were you specifically looking for a Female Head Voice Workout? I might be convinced to post one if there is demand.
@@SpencerWelchVocalStudio Hi Spencer. Yes, the Female Mix Voice workout was helpful. Still doing it. I also am doing your trial for Singing Ignition. I have done these types of exercises in the past, but then have bought a few different programs along the way doing other exercises and I find myself back here to the SLS exercises, as I feel that is what my voice responds best to. I was just looking ahead at what comes next, lol. Thank you for your videos!
I don't think I said that. It's crucial first to discover and sufficiently develop chest voice and head voice. Then you know what you are mixing together for a mix voice. If you want to make purple, first you have to know what red and blue are :)
Hi ! Im 15 and head voice is challenging . Its weak and the range is not great enough . Will time+a few exercises bring my head voice and strengthen it and make it louder ?
It takes about 10 years for the male voice to settle after puberty, but usually things get easier with every one of those 10 years, especially if you are doing the right exercises for your voice. So it doesn't surprise me that your head voice is challenging right now, but it should get easier.
@@SpencerWelchVocalStudio Ah thank uu . I can produce the head voice with exercises but when I apply it to songs it becomes airy or flip into falsetto too easily so yeah I gotta keep going !!
Hi, thank you so much for all your videos. I've been trying to get a mixed voice. I've found an area in my voice which is really light, very quiet and breathy, but it is singing high notes very quietly, without any tension, and I can go from the bottom of my range right into falsetto range, but it really doesn't sound good at all - if I try to make it any louder my voice cracks and it's not a good time, and it's very very thin. Do you think it could be a really underdeveloped mix, or is it just a weird whispered chest voice? Thank you so much.
You're welcome for the videos! As far as this voice quality you've discovered, since singing is an auditory medium, it's hard for me to guess what you might be doing without hearing you and working with you in a lesson. How high are you able to sing with this light, breathy quality?
@@SpencerWelchVocalStudio I completely understand. As for the range, it's around an E5. I can't tell where it starts because it carries straight on from in my chest range. Thank you!
Dom Horsman so you mean E5 is the highest you can sing with this coordination? If it smoothly proceeds from your chest voice where don’t have to change volume or vowel drastically, you might be in a light mix.
i have a problem when i go from low to high my voice flips halfway and like transition into somewhat spongebob screaming or the crying mort from madagascar.
Haha that's a vivid description! I'd be happy to help you if you book private coaching with me. Or you can sign up for a 14-day free trial at singingignition.com, upload a recording of your voice, and I'll assess it and open up the module that addresses your vocal issues.
@@SpencerWelchVocalStudio so- will my voice will change or- it will remain same as it is right now? Even if I do these all work out? (& Thank you for replying really appreciated it)
There's a difference between your voice, the instrument, changing and your ability to play that instrument, your skill, changing. Your voice, the instrument, probably won't change a lot now. The male voice does settle for 10 years after the change at puberty, but the changes are incremental now. BUT your ability to use the voice you have better can improve through training and practice.

Is it possible if I can combine the head voice warm up, with the mix voiced if so I’m tryna including the hooty wee into it I just don’t know how long my vocal warm up should be
Without hearing you and working with you in a lesson, I can't say how long your warm up should specifically be for you. In general, I suggest 10-15 mins for most students, depending on their abilities and access. The tissue should be warmed up within 8-10 mins after which they are working out their voice and building positive muscles memory.
@@Darri_VasquezRNP Anything is possible, depending on your needs and abilities. But everyone is different so I would have to work with you in a lesson to know what you need as far as head vs mix voice exercises in a workout.
As i understand, his head voice is just very good developed counter-tenor timbre, right? So, to sound like that we need to accent counter-tenor transition?
Which brings up the question: objectively and functionally what is the difference (or similarities) between "countertenor timbre" and head voice? Especially since some countertenors are baritones who couldn't get their career to take off as a performing classical baritone, so they transitioned to developing and performing in falsetto. I explain the functional difference between head voice and falsetto in this video: What is Head Voice? ua-cam.com/video/iW3vUlaplQE/v-deo.html On the other hand, Dimash is a leggero tenor ("lightweight tenor"), the highest and lightest classification of the tenor instrument. So his vocal fold length and thickness are much shorter and thinner than a baritone's. He is singing in a connected head voice in his highest notes, instead of falsetto.
Yes, this range is good for baritones also. I also find that some men that think they are baritones are actually tenors that favour their chest voice and aren't yet developed in their head voice. So give yourself the chance to build your whole voice: chest, mix, and head voice.
I'm not sure what you need to work on because everyone is different, and I don't know your voice :) If you would like to get personal guidance about your voice, you can book a 20-min trial lesson at my studio here: www.spencerwelch.com/ko-trial-lesson Or you can sign up for my new program SINGING IGNITION where I listen to your recorded voice and open up a singing program personalized for you: www.singingignition.com

I don't know your voice so I can't give you specific guidance without working with you in a lesson. You can try smoothing out this crack with this video of mine: How to Erase Your Vocal Break ua-cam.com/video/I_w549666r0/v-deo.html
You don't want head voice to be too breathy or it can become falsetto. However, it's also normal for head voice to be a little breathy at first during development. Were your high notes breathy when you practiced along with this?
I'd have to hear you to know for sure, but from what you describe you should be ok. Keep working at getting your head voice to be less breathy, which is different than a "hooty" "dopey" sound that I demonstrate in the video.
@@SpencerWelchVocalStudio how does it make falsetto more controlled? Is it different varieties of muscles being worked in the head voice that transfer to falsetto?
The concepts of "support" and "singing from the diaphragm" mean different things to different people There is no consensus among voice teachers and pedagogues, and ultimately, it can be confusing to singers. I suggest you watch this video to understand more how I define it: Better Breathing for Singing ua-cam.com/video/dyNXXDCjAL0/v-deo.html
It's not normal, in that your head voice should not feel strained when you sing in it (in a perfect world). However, some people do feel strain up there, sometimes only due to bad muscular habits. Other times there may be issue with vocal health. A good vocal coach and then an ENT doctor would be able to tell you.
As I've said before, please check out IVA (vocaladvancement.com) if you're interested in learning what these exercises do and why they do what they do. Teachers pay and train with me for this information, so I don't give it out here for free.
I don't know your voice so I can't comment about your situation (everyone is different) but it is common for a guy's high range to be unstable and even disappear for a while after the male voice change. Give your voice some time to settle and find a good vocal coach.

Thank you Spencer for your exercises that made me like my head voice but I still feel like I'm just able to make these sounds with so little volume...
When I try to use my head voice louder I always use much breath and there lacks the true power of head voice
I really need a stronger and louder head voice for a perfect mix. Please help me

Whoo! Thank you
You're welcome! How's your head voice doing?
So is head voice simply a higher version of chest voice?? I'm so confused when people say "Don't force chest voice like head voice" while I'm having a hard time diffrentiating between the two as a whole
I can understand how it could be confusing trying to learn this on your own. Feel free to book a lesson so I can show you the difference and give you specific feedback about what you are doing
With the hooty foo and wee, is it like a good alternative to use rather then singing the vowels?
My suggestion is sing along with the exercises as they are presented here, since I have taken great care to sequence them in a way that will help the most amount of people possible. Of course, everyone is different so not everything will work for everyone. If something doesn't work, feel free to skip it or book a lesson with me so that I can help make a modified, personalized workout for you.
Can you I sing higher when I naturally have a low voice?
For sure.
Muito obrigada 😙
De nada. But you should work with my female workouts so that you are singing in the right keys and ranges 😊
Have you gotten a chance to practice along with my "Mix Voice Workout for Guys" video yet? ua-cam.com/video/ZpeVTtLusgo/v-deo.html
@@SpencerWelchVocalStudio I haven’t added it to my regular practice routine yet, but I did save it to a list. Thanks! 🙏
I can do all this exercise and higher....but still...... CAN´T SING VERSACE ON THE FLOOR!!

Thank you for your videos!
it would be good Portuguese subtitles I'm watching in Brazil😁

When I’m warming up with the Gee, does it help reduce breathiness and help connect my chest to my head voice?
It might. I don't know your voice so I would have to work with you in a lesson to know how it affects you. What do you find?
@@SpencerWelchVocalStudio I think you told me this question before, does the Gee like help find that head voice followed by the hooty wee and foo
That depends on the person. It's also information that don't give out for free here, as it's part of the IVA teacher training that I teach.
👏👏 awesome
Thank you! Cheers!
How come it’s crucial to develop your head voice, before going into mix voice and chest voice?
I don't think I said that. It's crucial first to discover and sufficiently develop chest voice and head voice. Then you know what you are mixing together for a mix voice. If you want to make purple, first you have to know what red and blue are :)
Hi ! Im 15 and head voice is challenging . Its weak and the range is not great enough . Will time+a few exercises bring my head voice and strengthen it and make it louder ?
Thanks for your question. Are you male and has your voice changed from puberty yet?
@@SpencerWelchVocalStudio Im male and my puberty started at 12 . How long do i have to wait
Yes, that's typical for singers to see results first in exercises and later in songs.
Tried many exercises and didn't really feel the connection. This was good for me.
Great to hear!
i have a problem when i go from low to high my voice flips halfway and like transition into somewhat spongebob screaming or the crying mort from madagascar.

I'm 19 already will my voice change? Or like will it strengthen up? 👉🏻👈🏻 I just commented cause I saw you're replying to all so
Are you born male or female, testosterone-affected or not? The large majority have already gone through puberty and experienced a voice change by 19.
@@SpencerWelchVocalStudio I'm male & yesh my voice have got deeper so I guess testosterone have affected me already

@@SpencerWelchVocalStudio is it possible though to combine the head voice warm up, with the mix I’m tryna sing in head voice
@@Darri_VasquezRNP Anything is possible, depending on your needs and abilities. But everyone is different so I would have to work with you in a lesson to know what you need as far as head vs mix voice exercises in a workout.
Should guys first work on their head voice, before mix?
Depends on the guy. Everyone is different.
I almost sound like a bird chirping 😂
what if i want my head voice to sound like Dimash’s? what do i need to do to get that strong connection and female sounding?
Get a good vocal coach and get ready to work. Inheriting good genes doesn't hurt either haha.
I explain the functional difference between head voice and falsetto in this video:
What is Head Voice? ua-cam.com/video/iW3vUlaplQE/v-deo.html
On the other hand, Dimash is a leggero tenor ("lightweight tenor"), the highest and lightest classification of the tenor instrument. So his vocal fold length and thickness are much shorter and thinner than a baritone's. He is singing in a connected head voice in his highest notes, instead of falsetto.
Do you prefer training head voice or falsetto?
I always go after head voice first, unless the singer has no falsetto.
@@SpencerWelchVocalStudio I’ve got a question though, when training head voice how does it allow a better control falsetto?
@@Darri_VasquezRNP They both involve similar muscle groups activating.
@@SpencerWelchVocalStudio ahhh alright so if I still, trained my head voice more my falsetto will be more controlled without forming a break
Does this develop head voice I need help find my head voice
Sir i am a baritone
Can i do this exercise too?
Yes, this range is good for baritones also. I also find that some men that think they are baritones are actually tenors that favour their chest voice and aren't yet developed in their head voice. So give yourself the chance to build your whole voice: chest, mix, and head voice.
Thanks for the knowledge sir
But before this exercise do i have to work on my vocal break?

How to Erase Your Vocal Break ua-cam.com/video/I_w549666r0/v-deo.html
Is it supposed to be breathy or more connected?
You don't want head voice to be too breathy or it can become falsetto. However, it's also normal for head voice to be a little breathy at first during development. Were your high notes breathy when you practiced along with this?
My high notes were a little bit breathy but not too breathy
I'd have to hear you to know for sure, but from what you describe you should be ok. Keep working at getting your head voice to be less breathy, which is different than a "hooty" "dopey" sound that I demonstrate in the video.
Have you seen my video What is Head Voice?
ua-cam.com/video/iW3vUlaplQE/v-deo.html
Is falsetto the “head voice” ?
No, falsetto is not the same as head voice, but both are vocal registers that cover the high range of the human voice
Is it possible to train head voice, and falsetto at the Same time?
Yes, training head voice allows you to control falsetto better as well.
@@SpencerWelchVocalStudio how does it make falsetto more controlled? Is it different varieties of muscles being worked in the head voice that transfer to falsetto?
Must we support our head voice with diaphragm ?
The concepts of "support" and "singing from the diaphragm" mean different things to different people There is no consensus among voice teachers and pedagogues, and ultimately, it can be confusing to singers. I suggest you watch this video to understand more how I define it:

I feel lot of strain using head voice, that is not normal right? Damn I think something is damaged ffs..
It's not normal, in that your head voice should not feel strained when you sing in it (in a perfect world). However, some people do feel strain up there, sometimes only due to bad muscular habits. Other times there may be issue with vocal health. A good vocal coach and then an ENT doctor would be able to tell you.
Can anyone tell which notes are used ??

I don't know your voice so I can't comment about your situation (everyone is different) but it is common for a guy's high range to be unstable and even disappear for a while after the male voice change. Give your voice some time to settle and find a good vocal coach.
