Sugar Gliders are super adorable until one of them is angry or afraid... then they make the most jarring, loud, and unnaturally mechanical noise you've ever heard, and you feel like you just broke an old clay jar in the back of the museum, and awoke an ancient evil.
One of the fun things about possums is that they're all over the place down here, not just out in the bush (like squirrels in US cities). So they tend to have fairly frequent battles with feral cats or pet cats with irresponsible owners. Getting woken up at 2am by a cat and a possum yowling and growling at each other is quite the freaky experience if you don't know exactly what you're hearing!
This was the best late night animal segment I’ve ever seen! Stephen was so gentle and curious and let Coyote TALK. And wasn’t ridiculously scared - so cute 😁

Fostered an orphaned Red Kangaroo joey and discovered first hand what those tails can do. Ruby Roo was about that size and was ih her pouch on my lap when she decided to get out and accidentally hit me up side the head with her tail. I was seeing stars. Little buggers are strong as! She went on to a refuge and became a foster mum. Still miss her.
I hit a kangaroo in the tail with my car going 100kmh. Busted headlight for me, Kangaroo seemed unfazed. Thank god I didn't hit it full on, for my sake as well as the kangas

You’ve got that right. Unfortunately, they have become so tame it makes them a target for wankers who think Quokka soccer is a fun game. Having said that, quokkas are only found in the wild in south Western Australia, with a decent sized colony off the coast of Perth (Rottnest Island) which is not the location of any of the catastrophic fires of the fire season (at least not this year).
He also was super gentle about petting the sugar glider without being timid. Most people not used to petting animals manhandle them, but Stephen took great care not to put too much pressure on it. He must've owned a cat or a bird at some point in his life (We already know he has a dog).

Still have a scar near my left eye I got as a small child back in the 70's from a kangaroo Pro tip, never try to pat a Joey when it's in its mother's pouch.
As scar stories go, yours is one of the best! It highlights your innocence at the time, your childish curiosity for other creatures, and that you actually learn from less than ideal experiences.
Also, it's odd to be all about animals and then wear leather hat and boots -- as if cows aren't adorable and worthy of care and curiosity instead of captivity and slaughter.

I've been with Coyote since the beginning on YT. YT needed a guy to fill that hole, he stepped in, did some spectacular vlogs with the venom bites, worked hard in his travels, and edits. Now he has 10 million plus subs, over a billion views & an Animal Planet Series! An incredible ride for the Snapping Turtle catching wizard.
This is why he’s the best in American late night tv. Also I love how he was interested in the facts and asked questions about it. And raises awareness for them. And was offended about being a kangaroo coward.

Someone should tell him the vast majority of the fires in Australia are now out, due to MASSIVE amounts of rain & flash flooding. The good thing about that is that 20 million hectares of burnt, dead looking trees are now covered in green & regrowing, but there's not enough food for surviving animals yet, so still a lot of work needed with people going out & placing artificial feeding stations into the bush to keep the animals alive. The bats (that are really cute, look up "flyingfox" if you don't believe me) are doing it particularly tough right now, since they eat fruit & it will take a long time to grow back, so they've moved into urban areas (new virus just waiting to emerge anyone?) so many are dying from electricity cabling, cars & dehydration is still a major problem for them without access to proper food & water, so carers are still flat out, particularly with babies that often survive when their mums are electrocuted, tangled in various wires etc etc & it's important to try to save the babies, because they are all endangered species :( So thanks for helping people love Aussie animals Coyote & Stephen & donations will be really appreciated, but also know that the animals here down under are largely going to be ok (especially due to the awesome amount of help & support from around the world) & the vast majority of the burnt trees are going to regenerate & those that don't will be replaced by the billions of seeds now sprouting due to the fire followed by intense rain. She'll be right mate :-)
@nicky wilson thanks for the reply &sadly all you said is true to my knowledge :( Alpine areas same as the rainforests too, they were actually seeded from helicopters by national parks staff last time climate change induced bushfires took them out in a desperate last bid hope of keeping them alive in their natural form. I haven't heard an update yet on what's happening with the burnt areas above the snow line where it's not supposed to burn with hot fires, but I'm guessing National Parks won't be intending on doing another seed dispersal of native trees, maybe they might do a seed dispersal of trees that are supposed to grow in warmer climates though so as to not leave the mountains bare, they've been thinking about & planning what to do for years now,, ever since the last mountain bushfire. We need to return to "cultural burning", still going to struggle against global warming, but seems to be the only thing that has a chance of working. If you read about what this country looked like before white man, there were trees that required diverse ranges of fires all growing net to each other due to the extreme control the Aboriginal people had over fire. They would have rainforest right next to trees that needed regular burning, trees that needed burning at least every 3 years growing next to trees that died with fires more than once in 7 years, incredible the control they had over fire really!
& can I just add, for anyone worried donated money might not go to wildlife, if there's not enough bushfire survivors to use the money, then the money will be spent on other injured & ill wildlife, that will be released into the bushfire areas as soon as the trees have recovered enough to support them, so that those animals can live & breed there & restore wildlife populations in the bushfire areas :)
@nicky wilson agreed, or rather I wish they'd come here but recognised they were seeing a superior way of living & learnt from it & taken it home with them to Europe. The lifestyle all Aboriginal people had at the time of European colonisation was on par with how rich, first world people live today, while England at the time was on par with the overcrowded third world countries of today, yet they thought they were superior?
@nicky wilson yes agreed re where the money is going, but I think a lot of those donating want & expect the money to go to the animals injured in the bushfires,or at least to the areas burnt in the bushfires ,so I think it's important that they know that the money will be going to animals that are going to be used to re-populate that 20 million hectares of burnt bushland if the animals that lived there have died. The money isn't just going into general revenue, it's going to feed & care for survivors & to help restore that burnt bushland & any additional will also be used to increase available care in next year's bushfires as well, because sadly with global warming,this is the new norma l:( There's actually been some complaints raised by some in relation to slow distribution of funds, but that is because the charity system in Australia is strict & requires that the money be used for the purpose it was donated for,it cannot just be moved to other needs, it is for care of animals impacted by bushfire & in the bushfire areas (it is also being used for the associated drought & floods though,as that can reasonably be seen as coming under that same umbrella of needs, hence why the flying foxes are currently getting it, due to them dropping to the ground on mass from dehydration & exhaustion,partly from the bushfires taking their food & smoke inhalation, but mostly from a lack of water & lack of moisture in the food they are eating due to the drought. Koalas & possums brought into care for that reason will be getting funding too)
Koalas are my favorite.. especially the baby koalas.. wish Coyote brought a koala on the show and had it climp up to stephens back an it held on loke a backpack. and fed it some eucalyptus leaves.

Over a billion native animals lost, 80% of the koalas have lost their homes ... and our government is trying to sell some of the remaining areas off to mining and foreign amusement companies. On a happier note, that is an albino sugar glider, they also live in rainforest climates ... which means they are the best hang-gliders haha

Once when out for a walk, a roo hippity hopped up to me at full speed and shoulder charged me. Sent me flying Don't let their cuteness deceive you. I've also been bit by a possum. The cute things in Australia are the most dangerous
Wombats can run at 40kmh short distance and often if they latch on with their teeth they won't let go like a lizard. I've heard of a person once having to kick one with full force so it would let go of his daughters leg, it just grunted and shuffled off. Just pure muscle under the cute fur.

Funny(ish) story. I was in the audience with my fiancee, we'd got tickets ahead of time as we were on holiday in New York last February, for a recording on a Thursday. Something about Stephen's regular show that some might not know, is that he records two shows on Thursdays, he does two monologues and two shows' worth of other stuff, but they also mix in some things recorded on other days for broadcast. One thing they recorded while we were there, was the audience reaction to Coyote Peterson's mini-promo thing they do for the title sequence. I was HYPED when this happened. I knew beforehand we would be seeing John Turturro, and I was pretty happy about that (Do The Right Thing is my favourite ever movie), but I'd got way into Coyote's UA-cam stuff in the months before. I thought we would be seeing this interview. It turned out, it had been filmed before and we wouldn't actually see Coyote's appearance. It was still great though, don't get me wrong. KALEO were fantastic and Turturro was incredible to hear from. It was an incredible end to a perfect day in New York.
Stephen is the only host who listens to the animal experts and actually interacts, does research and ask questions. I used to be a big Conan fan but Stephen is definitely my favorite now.
What's this? A quiet audience that doesn't want to scare the animals? A host that isn't acting like a nervous, scared idiot? An educator that doesn't have to literally shout over the host just to say something useful?! This just might be the best animal segment ever!

This is probably the most quiet ive ever heard an audience during an animal segment, usually you hear the "awwwwwws" from the get go
...or screaming, or yelling, like on Kimmel. Which is always ridiculous. Even after the wildlife experts ask for quiet.
Maybe they were told these are babies. So they react differently to loud noises. The wallaby didn’t want to get out.

The bats (that are really cute, look up "flyingfox" if you don't believe me) are doing it particularly tough right now, since they eat fruit & it will take a long time to grow back, so they've moved into urban areas (new virus just waiting to emerge anyone?) so many are dying from electricity cabling, cars & dehydration is still a major problem for them without access to proper food & water, so carers are still flat out, particularly with babies that often survive when their mums are electrocuted, tangled in various wires etc etc & it's important to try to save the babies, because they are all endangered species :(
So thanks for helping people love Aussie animals Coyote & Stephen & donations will be really appreciated, but also know that the animals here down under are largely going to be ok (especially due to the awesome amount of help & support from around the world) & the vast majority of the burnt trees are going to regenerate & those that don't will be replaced by the billions of seeds now sprouting due to the fire followed by intense rain. She'll be right mate :-)

Alpine areas same as the rainforests too, they were actually seeded from helicopters by national parks staff last time climate change induced bushfires took them out in a desperate last bid hope of keeping them alive in their natural form. I haven't heard an update yet on what's happening with the burnt areas above the snow line where it's not supposed to burn with hot fires, but I'm guessing National Parks won't be intending on doing another seed dispersal of native trees, maybe they might do a seed dispersal of trees that are supposed to grow in warmer climates though so as to not leave the mountains bare, they've been thinking about & planning what to do for years now,, ever since the last mountain bushfire.
We need to return to "cultural burning", still going to struggle against global warming, but seems to be the only thing that has a chance of working. If you read about what this country looked like before white man, there were trees that required diverse ranges of fires all growing net to each other due to the extreme control the Aboriginal people had over fire. They would have rainforest right next to trees that needed regular burning, trees that needed burning at least every 3 years growing next to trees that died with fires more than once in 7 years, incredible the control they had over fire really!
& can I just add, for anyone worried donated money might not go to wildlife, if there's not enough bushfire survivors to use the money, then the money will be spent on other injured & ill wildlife, that will be released into the bushfire areas as soon as the trees have recovered enough to support them, so that those animals can live & breed there & restore wildlife populations in the bushfire areas :)
@nicky wilson agreed, or rather I wish they'd come here but recognised they were seeing a superior way of living & learnt from it & taken it home with them to Europe. The lifestyle all Aboriginal people had at the time of European colonisation was on par with how rich, first world people live today, while England at the time was on par with the overcrowded third world countries of today, yet they thought they were superior?
@nicky wilson yes agreed re where the money is going, but I think a lot of those donating want & expect the money to go to the animals injured in the bushfires,or at least to the areas burnt in the bushfires ,so I think it's important that they know that the money will be going to animals that are going to be used to re-populate that 20 million hectares of burnt bushland if the animals that lived there have died. The money isn't just going into general revenue, it's going to feed & care for survivors & to help restore that burnt bushland & any additional will also be used to increase available care in next year's bushfires as well, because sadly with global warming,this is the new norma l:(
There's actually been some complaints raised by some in relation to slow distribution of funds, but that is because the charity system in Australia is strict & requires that the money be used for the purpose it was donated for,it cannot just be moved to other needs, it is for care of animals impacted by bushfire & in the bushfire areas (it is also being used for the associated drought & floods though,as that can reasonably be seen as coming under that same umbrella of needs, hence why the flying foxes are currently getting it, due to them dropping to the ground on mass from dehydration & exhaustion,partly from the bushfires taking their food & smoke inhalation, but mostly from a lack of water & lack of moisture in the food they are eating due to the drought. Koalas & possums brought into care for that reason will be getting funding too)

Koalas are my favorite.. especially the baby koalas.. wish Coyote brought a koala on the show and had it climp up to stephens back an it held on loke a backpack. and fed it some eucalyptus leaves.

Over a billion native animals lost, 80% of the koalas have lost their homes ... and our government is trying to sell some of the remaining areas off to mining and foreign amusement companies.
On a happier note, that is an albino sugar glider, they also live in rainforest climates ... which means they are the best hang-gliders haha

Wombats can run at 40kmh short distance and often if they latch on with their teeth they won't let go like a lizard.
I've heard of a person once having to kick one with full force so it would let go of his daughters leg, it just grunted and shuffled off. Just pure muscle under the cute fur.

Fun fact, they eat the crotch out of underwear too! (I do wildlife rescues, have never actually had a wombat, but know people who have & that's their main comment, ensure all underwear is out of their reach or expect to find it crotchless when you go to put it on after the wombat managed to get into the dirty washing basket)
I held a very young wombat once and fortunately didn’t get bitten. I love Oz but it is full of dangerous snakes and critters!
@@conniecrawford5231 dangerous, just like the people, but because we CAN bite doesn't mean we do :) The people & animals in Oz are the same, easy going, non-aggressive, unless you REALLY deserve otherwise & then watch out! The magpies are the exception, fuckin insane little monsters some of them!
Funny(ish) story. I was in the audience with my fiancee, we'd got tickets ahead of time as we were on holiday in New York last February, for a recording on a Thursday. Something about Stephen's regular show that some might not know, is that he records two shows on Thursdays, he does two monologues and two shows' worth of other stuff, but they also mix in some things recorded on other days for broadcast. One thing they recorded while we were there, was the audience reaction to Coyote Peterson's mini-promo thing they do for the title sequence. I was HYPED when this happened. I knew beforehand we would be seeing John Turturro, and I was pretty happy about that (Do The Right Thing is my favourite ever movie), but I'd got way into Coyote's UA-cam stuff in the months before. I thought we would be seeing this interview. It turned out, it had been filmed before and we wouldn't actually see Coyote's appearance.
It was still great though, don't get me wrong. KALEO were fantastic and Turturro was incredible to hear from. It was an incredible end to a perfect day in New York.
They are all so adorableee!! Especially the Sugar Glider!! I'm so glad the fires are nearly gone now that was terrible for Australia.
Stephen is the only host who listens to the animal experts and actually interacts, does research and ask questions. I used to be a big Conan fan but Stephen is definitely my favorite now.
I really hope there are more visits from Coyote once we can have gatherings again!!! Stephen seems to really like the animals.
