    Note: I HIGHLY recommend you play this game yourself before watching, but if you are not able to for one reason or another, then hey it is what it is and feel free to view. It's a very linear game, so if you've played it yourself you probably won't want to watch someone else play it, but I still want you to experience the game how it is meant to be expecienced: Alone, sipping some tea, in a dark, quiet room.
    Kan Gao, aka Freebird Games, aka my favorite indie developer since ever, has made a new little game for the world. This is a good day.
    A Bird Story is a short, wordless tale of a boy and his encounter with a small bird. Not much else to say but, well, birds are people too - not really but bird.
    Yes.
    Also this just might be the first in a series involving this nameless character fella, or I might have just perceived the ending wrong. I DON'T KNOW BUT IT'S A BEAUTIFUL AND TOUCHING LITTLE TALE AND I HOPE YOU LIKE IT CUZ I SURE DID GOSH.
    Have a great time, folks. :D

      I feel ya. Video games (especially JRPGs and RPG maker games) absolutely destroy me.

    I don't think I've ever heard Cry laugh as much as he did during the little chase scene in this game. It was super adorable. Cry, your laugh is super adorable and I urge you to do that more often. Anyway, this game was so pretty and I loved the music. It was nice and calming and fit the scenes.

    I remember as a kid I would always bring home injured animals or abandoned animals and try to nurse them back to health. And if a vet said nothing could be done I would bawl my eyes out and repeatedly say sorry to the little thing. I still bring home animals. I have taken care of a whole litter of baby bunnies when the mother was killed by my friends dog.

    When I was little I lived out in the forest, and me and my cousin would often go playing and come home with an injured animal that we'd insist on nursing back to help. I remember one day finding a small bird. It couldn't fly and me and my cousin (we were around 6) decided to teach it how to fly. Now, since we were little we didn't know how exactly to do that, but being stubborn we climbed to the top of our tree house and I tossed it. It took a few times but the third time, it actually took off. It soared until it disappeared and looking back now, I don't know how it happened. But it taught me a lot about strength, and I forgot all about it until I watched this. Funny how old memories do that.

    That was a beautiful game with an amazing story. I own a lot of chickens back home and I've grown real attached to them over the many years of having them. Sadly, I've had to say goodbye to a lot of them. Always breaks my heart. Doesn't sound like it's so sad, but when you create bonds with animals, it's always tough to let go.

      As an owner of many "unpopular" animals who often get scoffed at by friends and family, I can relate to this comment and the replies. It's a damn shame some people will never experience that one of a kind bond with an animal, just because they think said animal is incapable of growing close to your heart. I've had rats who had more personality and affection than horses, but never got given a chance because, well, it's a rat.

    • @hosana022
      @hosana022 9 років тому +13

      I understand though. One time, we got an assignment to observe an animal. I decided to observe an ant and put him in a jar. I gave him a bit of sugar everyday. I got so attached by it and I love how he tried so hard to get out. After I finished my assignment, I released it. But then I accidentaly smashed him with my book just a moment after.
      I'm full of sins.

    Oh gosh, I knew I'd be tearing up. I used to have a bird when I was little, and I taught it the fox whistle. One day his cage was outside, because birds are super messy and stinky, and we didn't know he knew how to open his cage. So he got out and I was panicking. Then while I'm sitting outside crying, I hear the fox whistle. He hadn't gotten very far, just down the street.

      Friends perhaps? Or wait until you can make enough money to buy it yourself (it's only $5 or less) and negotiate with your parents to get them to allow it, or participate in giveaways where you can win it, or ask for it for your birthday (or other gift giving occassions your family may participate in). There's plenty of opportunities out there if you really want something.
      I still think torrenting something you care about is a horrible idea however, especially from indie developers, so please don't do that.

    Am I the only one who thinks this is bittersweet? The whole subject of saying goodbye to someone who made your life so much better pains me, but the bird finally gaining freedom and being able to fly is really sweet. Letting go was for the best, but it must have hurt the kid (as seen by the two hugging tightly).
    I don't know, I really really hope we'll find out that the bird occasionally payed him visits.

    *WARNING SPOILERS BELOW*
    I think that the whole tale is a metaphor for something not so obvious just by the appearance. I think the game is about a boy who has attention deficit disorder (travels with great skips, trouble paying attention in class by seeing what's on the blackboard, studying great lenghts during the night, blending of environment, notes around the house) and the bird represents the part of him that is free to be imaginative. Also, the giant paperplane made from his book represents his tendency to literally derive his attention from work and wander in his mind.
    When he goes to the veterinarian, it is in fact a pharmacist that is prescribing him drugs for ADD like Ritalin, Adderall, and evading the "healing" of the bird is his reluctance to do it. This is why the teacher finds him troubling and teams up with the "veterinarian".
    When he brings his bird to school for the presentation, it is because he is talking about his imaginative passions.
    When he sees the bird on the balcony, not being in its "real" place, he reminds himself that he has no choice but to accept the drugs.
    The fall and breakage of the paperplane means his toning down of attitude due to the drugs' effects.
    Finding out the pieces of paper represents him coping with this change in life and getting back to be "normally imaginative".
    The end scene with the bird means that he accepts his condition but still embraces it, and the bird bringing the last piece of paper means that he now learned to be imaginative by constructing his own way to "fly/be in his mind" ; it's not a bird, but it still can make him fly.

    • @rayrobertson6739
      @rayrobertson6739 5 років тому

      Really well thought out! I actually enjoy the story more taken as a metaphor. A big plot hole for me was how nonsensical it was for a kid to be alone in an apartment with no sign of parents around. What do you think the animal that was about to attack and kill the bird before the boy threw a rock at it to drive it away represented metaphorically?

    *Wait wait wait* I just went back to the beginning after watching the end and it looks to me as if the ENTIRE game is just him dreaming. Even him rescuing the bird, playing with the bird and being friends with the bird. Does that mean none of it ever happened?? At the very beginning it seems as if he's missing the bird OR wishing that the bird was actually real. If my thinking is correct, this just made me a lot more sad :(

    • @Leon-eu2uo
      @Leon-eu2uo 10 років тому +46

      In my opinion, yes I think he was dreaming. But he was dreaming about everything he went through with the injured bird (that's why there's a lot of fantasy things going on in the playthrough, even the giant paper plane, but it was happening.) but then he woke up and found the bird coming back to him with its wing already healed and it can fly now. That's my thought anyway, I don't really understand how the story goes myself. Maybe things will be more clear after "Finding Paradise" released.

    • @Leon-eu2uo
      @Leon-eu2uo 10 років тому +15

      What I meant is everything that happened is actually happened. His dream is kinda like a flashback. At the beginning he throw the paperplane on the balcony and at the end the bird get the paperplane back to him.

    • @emile7794
      @emile7794 10 років тому +16

      Ferdian Leonarta The idea of him dreaming in flashbacks makes sense now that I watched the end again. So at the beginning he throws the plane before going to bed. Then the whole game is his dream about the bird, and at the very end, he wakes up and the bird gives him the plane back.
      I really want the rest of the game to come out soon!

    Am I the only one that cried when I found out the bird was okay? This game is amazing! 10/10 for inspiring me to write and draw more. It's these kind of games that tell me that whatever I write has meaning, and there is another person out there who might love it. I can create any story I want, and try to give it an interesting plot line, but yours just blew me away! :D Amazing work Kan Gao! You really outdid yourself again with this masterpiece of story line. "The characters say so much with out even talking," quote Cryaotic 2014. It's absolutely brilliant! I hope you make more in the future, because I want these beautiful story mode games to stay around for a long time! Anyways, that's all I had to say. Have a good one! :)

    In all honesty, half way through the game I noticed the boy looked like Eva from To The Moon and it got stuck in my head that that was her. Who said she has to look like an actual girl in her childhood? I was half expecting a cutscene after the credits that showed Eva telling the story to Neil before they leave for another mission. I don't know, I thought it would have been a cute idea, especially if the bird flew in through an open window after they left the office.
    This story is brilliant though, whether the main character is a boy or girl. I hope Finding Paradise is released soon. Whenever Cry plays games like this, my life and day get infinitely better.
    Thank you for playing this game Cry. See you again soon.

This whole thing remined me of so many playthroughs of really cool rpg games that i either haven't watched in forever or ment to watch but never did ( like IB, Witche's house, mad father, the crooked man, or blank dream) and now i have a whole bunch of things i wanna watch plus some other things that aren't even rpg gameplays but it's ok because i'm on wiinter break from school. i still need to finish finding paradise its still on pause lmao.

  • @NekoChanDraws

    I have an idea.
    Okay so, at the beginning of this story, I thought he was dreaming. He might be... but by the end of this game, I thought that maybe there is more to it than that. I feel like everything in this game represents something in the boys life. At the beginning, we are shown his life. His parents are barely home, he doesn't have friends at school, he struggles in his education. I think that the dreamlike environment at the start showed that he was struggling in life. The lights that went out represented the fact that he was loosing hope. (Maybe) The clocks signified that as time went on, he would continue to loose hope, and life wouldn't get any better. He continued to live his life the way it was. Then one day... he found hope. Or in this case, a bird with a broken wing. I think that the bird represents himself in a way. He feels trapped by society, and I think that is represented by the broken wing. And no matter how hard he tries, he can't fly away. But he still had hope (bird). And so, he began to try harder. He studied harder, and began to make more friends at school. He learnt the meaning of happiness in life. He learnt how to live his life and be happy. The broken wings slowly started to heal. But then, the vet (Or maybe that represents his mother or parents???) thought they knew what was best for him. They told him to fix the wings (to be perfect) so that he wouldn't fail. I felt that the cage that the vet had represented the fact that he felt caged. And so, he took his freedom and ran from that place. He tried to be free. He searched for many places where he felt he could finally belong. (The part where he was on the paper plane looking for places for the bird.) But he didn't belong in any of those places. And the more he felt that he didn't belong, the more he struggled to fit in. His grades lowered, and he lost his friends. He was beginning to loose hope. One day, his mother went and spoke with his teacher, and he walks in. They chase him, trying to take away his freedom, make him 'perfect' just the way they want him to be. But he has now learnt that it doesn't matter what they thought. He understood that he just had to be himself. And everything would be fine. He had found his 'hope'. But his parents and teacher went after him, pushing away his hope. He was cornered and had nowhere else to go. He was loosing his 'hope.' Once more, he tried 'flying away' from everything, but that didn't help. Because even though he tried running away from his life, it still caught up with him. When the paper airplane crashes, he has lost all hope. The bird is gone. He begins to live his life just as his parents wanted him to. Even if he hates it. But then, he hears the tweeting of the birds. He remembers hope. The bird and his/her partner at the end signifies that life goes on. You should never stop believing. The boy realized that there is more to life. That there is hope even when everything seems to be in despair. That there is light in the darkest of dark, that there is.....
    .......or maybe I'm just over imagining things xD What do you guys think?

    At the beginning when he is looking into the plant and when he goes back in time makes me think the entire game is him remembering what happened...
    Also, the mailbox outside of the veterinarians office has a japanese mail service symbol, which may mean that the boy lives in Japan. That would also explain details such as that he is living in an apartment complex with a huge city in the background or that he feels studying in important to the point of staying up all night.

    Oh man, Kan Gao at it again with another story-driven game, albeit this time a little more simplistic than that of To The Moon, but nevertheless simply amazing. And as always, the soundtrack to go along with the game complimented it all too well. Man, keep up the damn good work (Although at this point it's probably redundant to say this). But interestingly enough, this entire game had me reminded of another simple yet warming story of a movie named, "Kimi to boku", a story of a boy who meets a cat, and the whole essence of our main character here in A Bird Story is how he meets a bird. Funny how yet this simple plot point can make a whole world of nostalgia, and although both these stories are different, they still share a striking similarity in my opinion, but I'm going on a tangent at this point (Whooo, look at this wall of text) Either way, I hope you have a damn good years to come Kan.

    Thank you Cry, for making me cry with laughter, and for making me enjoy the experience a second time.
    I can recommend watching Cry’s playthrough after playing the game. You wouldn’t expect watching such a linear game too worthwhile after playing it yourself. Surprisingly Cry manages to provide an extra dimension that blends really well with the actual game.

    That... that was such a good experience. I was crying at the end, when we didn't know what happened to the bird, and as he came back I was just smiling while having tears roll down my cheeks... I was smiling a lot during this one. It was just adorable and absolutely wonderful :D Thank you Kan Gao for making this, and thank you Cry for playing it

    Finding Paradise is suppose to be the sequel for To The Moon. At the end of To the Moon Neil and Eva talk about a "new client" and that's the kid in A Bird Story. That little timeline at the end is the same as Johnny's in To the Moon.

      And here ladies and gentlemen of this fine place we call Cry's comment section, is a troll! The troll is out of place here, as most people are kind in Cry's comment section, but this guy obviously missed the memo. Trolls are annoying, as they are rude, annoying jerks who often can't spell! Let's leave the troll alone now, shall we?

    That really tugged on those beaten and battered heartstrings of mine. Thanks a lot for bringing this beautiful game to my attention Cry. And of course, FreeBird Games for being able to tell such a touching story without so much as a single word. Just goes to show you that emotions can be portrayed so powerfully through the medium. I really needed this so... thankyou.

    This was a very beautiful game, the flashback and the transitioning of motions was so very well done, one memory melding to another, the music, and even the very playful actions of the characters, it's really a very immersive story with no words needed.

    Decided to give posting a try again. Didn't see my comment appear the first time though. I typed this same message earlier, but I think I forgot to click on "public" first. Anyways, this was a nice game. Funny how it shows the boy's lifetime in the end and my birthday being yesterday, though. Hadn't really thought about the fact I'm a year older until now.

    I loved the story and the way it's told without words is very powerful. My only issues are that it doesn't seem like it is best suited to a game format. The player only gets to press the arrow keys to take the character from one cut scene to another, which isn't a whole lot of fun. This wouldn't matter so much if the game was only half an hour long, but for over an hour it wears pretty thin. I can enjoy a game without action and with little player interaction, and I can enjoy a game with no speech, but without either I found my concentration drifted quite a bit and I had to replay certain parts. However, I love that video games are starting to be explored and experimented with as a medium for artistic expression, as well as the normal ones which are designed to entertain you. I think games like this definitely have an important place in gaming, they can be a very refreshing change, I just think this didn't work so well as a game. Well worth playing/watching though, and I did watch it all the way to the end. :)

    I don't know how I cried more at this than To The Moon (which is incredibly good), but I think it's because I used to have three birds, one at a time, and though I loved each of them, I wished I had gotten more time with them, and before I could bond a lot with each one, they were all gone before the one year mark, no matter what reason. I love birds, and I'm not sure if maybe this sparked that inner me from a long time ago, but it was really confusing, yet very good. :') Kan Gao is just absolutely an amazing story teller and song maker...

    I watch cry plays finding paradise earlier, and when Colin says to Sofia that he wants to be a pilot because a long time a ago he lost a friend and he wants to fly to find them, I thought it's Faye, but now I see it'sactually the bird. I found it very very sad, i don't know why. but perhaps it's because he really doesn't have anyone, no family, no friends, that he really values his friendship to a bird and his imaginary friend :'( damn, anyone who made this is really genius at this
