Also huge thanks to my best friend, JVids24 for filming some of the extra onboard and exterior HST shots for me!
Wasn't in the mood to talk about Train Sim so have another one of these for this month. Sometimes I spoil you all...

All films/photos outside of the joke and stock images where applicable were taken by me or JVids24. Everything else was used under fair use where applicable.
Song used: Final Fantasy VII - Birth Of A God
Please don't pester comments/replies with requests of what trains should be next. Not only is it cluttering but it's also quite annoying (even for a joke), especially since you have no control over what ones will be next. I've had to ban a few people over this.
But yeah, um, you know the drill by now. Bonus Ducks and a free Berwick Swan will be awarded to whomever guesses *all* the exterior filming locations right. :)

317 Dan You even got the Dutch stations! Fantastic!
Heya, It might be a good idea to pin this comment, so people can see it without needing to scroll down all too far. Just a thought
@@317Dan Your knowledge has no bounds in terms of identifying these locations. You got them all right, even the first clip so well done!
Swan will be delivered by an independent adjudicator in due course ;)
The HST is the high speed equivalent of the Sprinter. It's not the most special train, but it was the workhorse of the railways, and did it with little fuss for far longer than it was expected to. When you are old enough to have seen them enter service, and still keep going to this day, you can't help but respect them. If only I was that old....
I find the HST's more comparable, albeit the polar opposite, to the Pacers actually. The main reason being that the HST's were essentially designed as a stopgap pending the development of more modern electric trains like the ill-fated APT, much like the Pacers were designed as stopgaps for rural, regional, and outer commuter services while the Sprinters were developed. Also yeah, they lasted _far_ longer than they were ever designed for
Polar opposites in the fact that the HST's became cultural rail icons known the world over, and even formed an export model. The Pacers...are the Pacers. I still want to know who thought introducing 4-wheel passenger vehicles to the mainline in the 20th century was a good idea
and the atp is the high speed equivilent of the pacer
Best HST livery hands down was FGW Dynamic Lines. Shame it didnt last long before just being painted a pain purple/blue
Class 180 livery better
I loved the 43 FGW livery
I only got to see it for 2 years before being repainted to their GWR livery
I was 5 when they repainted it
I have a memory of getting on one of them at Slough, to Oxford
For some reason I denied that the GWR 43 was the same train as the FGW 43
I think it was because the headlights were surrounded more in the GWR liv
Being from Australia and having only visited the UK once, I never got the chance to see a HST at full flight in person. Our XPT train, which was based on the HST, also originally came with Valentas (I believe they were replaced with VP185's like some HST's). Loud maybe but sounded great! I even prefer the sound of the old Valentas to the newer engines. Nevertheless, there is something amazing watching, even on video, a HST at full flight pelt through a station, engines screaming. Few trains can match it.
Having the HST with me in a fair chunk of my life and grew up with them. I respect these iconic workhorses and they are great trains. The Valenta Paxman V12's were painfully loud as a child but they did sound nice and the reason they were fitted with the MTU Euro 4 power units was to improve reliability and to meet the LEZ and ULEZ requirements of most cities in the UK from my understanding. I believe the VP185's are rated to Euro 3 emissions from what I have read but for a passenger diesel train to have a 40+ career and to have the world fastest diesel record is something that has to be respected. As much as I like TGV's, Shinkansens, KTX, Eurostar etc. The HST is the number one favourite for me and I am looking forward to riding the mini HST's next year when I visit Wales in 2022.
Thanks for the video mate.
You're welcome and thanks for the insight and reply :)
never knew this was gonna happen. As usual amazing content
Yeah, I like to keep it quiet just in case things don't work out (which has happened a few times with these videos) but I'm glad you enjoyed, so thank you.
This is my favourite of all of the trains in Britain. I used to put my bicycle onboard in Reading, take it off at Crewe, and put it in the guards van on another HST for Colwyn Bay. Then go for my holiday.
The trip back from North Wales, to where I was working, was exactly the same, but in reverse.
Everything about these trains worked, designed and built in a time when we knew how to build things. Reliable, Comfortable, Quick, I am sure that there are many other descriptions of these trains that I can come up with, and all very accurate.
This is the most entertaining video i’ve seen in a while
SCOOOOOTLAAAAND
seriously demoman joke's make my day
Yeah Demoman jokes are better
* inhales* *_SCOOOOOOOOOTLAAAAAAAAAAAAAND!!!!!_*
IMO people who call the HSTs multiple units are completely insane, great video by the way, i do quite like the HSTs, and i totally agree with what you say about the EMR HSTs, i would say that it would have been my favourite livery for the HST, i already love it on the meridians and sprinters
They have to get the attention somehow.
@@MaverickHunterDaniel so true, people who just want attention get it in any way they can
The InterCity125 was the train we all loved and adored
HST’s are the best British trains and will go down in history.
Excellent and funny video as always! Love these. 170 video though was best 😂
I can agree the 170 was my favourite one to do as well, mainly because of the intro :).
Stop whining about GWR HST seats, you sat on them for an entire day and I didn't hear you complaining then. ;)
Shhhhh, that's because I was distracted with you *conveniently* being behind me that day :D
3:23 just how the windows look like they arent moving, idk if its just my eyes being dumb but thought i may aswell mention it because idk funny i guess
Nah, it's not your eyes being dumb. It's something to do with the framerate of the camera.
Why tf am i addicted to watching this.. Lol
Damn you IET!
6:57 My local station lol
SCCCOOOOOTTTTTTLLLLLLAAAAAAANNNNNNNNNNNND 0:44
Thank you for Pinoting out HSTs are locos
All it is they are basically top and tailing between 8,7,6 or 4,5 coaches like the 37 sets on the whrrry lines
Not to some people it isn't lol
I kinda feel the same way with the class 373: Not really a multiple unit when 16/18 of the passenger cars are unpowered, and 2/3rds of the power being provided by 2 locomotives on each end
I find it pretty cool that Wikipedia uses a class from where I live as the top image for the DMU article.
The GWR HST has the best livery no cap
Intercity:
The HST is the 747 of trains. Wait both are exti- (Proof we are getting old)
3:02 your dream came true, they reliveried 43237
*274 but yeah, even though it'll be retired very shortly. Even if it'll be preserved, it's nothing but a waste of paint now.
I remember the FGW days, loved these machines
Great episode as always!
Thank you :)
IET doors be like: BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP BEEEEEEP BEEEEEEP

Where did you find that image?
I think it was from an EMR Press release. Can't find the actual link I'm afraid. Sorry.
@@MaverickHunterDaniel Ah I see! Thanks!!
A brick that has in basic 1 accelerate sticm and 1 decelerate stick to go fast (plus some more stuff)
There's not a train station anywhere near Staverton in Gloucestershire :P also, never, ever try Caramel Chocolate biscuits, they're worse than crack for addiction
Sheer luck seems to have prevented me from even noticing but I'll take your advice next time I go shopping! :D
@@MaverickHunterDaniel no going back once you've had one, very slippery slope!
1:34 everything makes sense😂
While they didn't get a full repainted set, I'm glad one of the 43's got that nice EMR purple. A nice end for the last mainline to see HST's serving London
Also yeah, HST's as DEMU's? No. Trainset seems more appropriate. Same with the older Blue Pullman trains
It still feels a bit half arsed, (kinda like with the NSE 313 Great Northern did) as well as suddenly getting rid of the HSTs to be replaced with trains that carry less passengers and don't work half the time.
These guys are the reasons the railways still exist, yet were not bothering to change the engine
They did tho. The MTU and VP185 were the engines that replaced the original Valenta. They are old now so they need to go.
@@bongman123 after that
@smudgycat6750 they weren't fitted that long ago in the grand scheme of things. I think the last HST had received its MTU engine in 2010 I believe, which means by the time the Power car was retired the engine itself was only around 1p years old, while the Valenta before it had been running between 1972 to 2010, which is 38 years old!!! Looking on Wikipedia it was a Grand Central Unit. Also lots of drivers for Scotrail do not like the HST as it is old, meaning it is DANGEROUS!!!! So yeah the engines had plenty of life but the train itself was very old.
Anyone know why the slam doors were replaced with electric plug doors? Has it got anything to do with disability access?
I would presume that along with safety and ease of access.
These hst in scr but the company stepford express
be quiet.
I Like The HST!
This is my take on the HST, even though i dont even live in the UK (or Europe). They are very nice looking, and the Mk 3 Coaches fit the Class 43, when it used slam doors. I understand why some Mk 3 Coaches was swapped to use interlocked automatic doors, but honestly it doesnt sit right with me, honestly it would of been better (in my opinion) it was changed to something like the 442. Sure it maybe narrower, and some people may not like the limited room, but it would of fit better when matched with the Class 43 Engines.
I am now prepared to see some replies about how they should of changed the slam doors to sliding doors.
This is my take on the HST. They take an age to get the amps up when you take power, and the seat rocks from side to side on its single pivot support. You need to put the brakes on ages before you might ever expect to, and you need to take then off 10mph before they need to come off. It's a little quirk they have. The vision out of the cab is excellent, the noise proofing is awful, thankfully. They rarely let you down, and in twenty years of driving them I have never failed one. They are my train of choice when it's slippery out there, and my train of choice when I am a passenger.
Finally, comparing them to newer trains is like comparing a modern Mercedes to an old Jaguar E-Type. Sure, the Mercedes is way quicker, more comfortable, technologically on a different planet blah blah blah....but tell me, which one would you sooner drive?
@@BibtheBoulder Very nice insight there, so thanks for your comment :)
@Snivy Films Probably because plug leaf doors like that are slower and have more chances for reliability issues (more moving parts.) I dunno, maybe the design wasn't too important for a basic life extension measure.
The midland mainline seats was the best
Happy they're finally getting phases out, not crash worthy and overrated. Nice to see some modern traction on its way
Booooo.
yeah, fair
@@MaverickHunterDaniel
The HST Has Got To Come Back To The GWML 👍
I agree strongly
1:40 or the Eurostar E300 an EMU
Serves Tamworth, show picture of Reliant 😂
Tamworth is where the Reliant Robins were built.
I know it is, I’m in that town somewhere!
The class 43 has 5 cars and Buffer variants
Awesome! I bet calling HSTs "DMUs" is also as annoying as calling all high speed trains "Maglevs" even though most of them run on conventional tracks and having no magnetic levitation. This is nonsense from America. Also, you're not the only one who likes old things from their childhood that got replaced during their young adult years and I feel the same with the 747 being replaced by the 787 and 777 aircraft on many big airlines even though the Concorde was retired during my elementary school years.
Outside of those clickbait "top ten fastest trains in 2021" videos you'd see, what oaf would call all high speed trains maglevs? That's worse than calling every fast boat a Catamaran.
That's as bad as calling all fast planes concordes
Saying that the hst is a dmu is like saying the class 170 is and electric train.
The example I provided in the video is a more accurate metaphore.
@@MaverickHunterDaniel true
I never knew HSTs were Diesel electric. Just thought it was diesel hydraulic or something
Pretty much all diesel locos running in the UK are diesel-electric after BR deemed Diesel Hydraulic 'non standard.' They both have advantages and disadvantages but DE is better for efficiency. Germany still uses a fair amount of Hydaulic locos (Voith Gravita says hello.)
@@MaverickHunterDaniel how come most of our MUs diesel-hydraulic then?
@@AymanTravelTransport No idea. Maybe we should dig up Dr Beeching and ask him.
@@MaverickHunterDaniel _oh, those indonesia's CC300 inserted_
what are your thoughts one the ap 411 ?

@@MaverickHunterDaniel yes indeed
@@MaverickHunterDaniel btw great video havent got the chance to take an hst in my life but i love that series
Lmao Luca whatling is infuriated by u calling a HST a loco 😂
What a shame.
@@MaverickHunterDaniel dw lol I don’t believe a HST is a DMU 🤣
i never liked how MTU engines sound and i never will but yes very good train
I see carmarthen Station at 2.14
the 313/2's arent that bad lmao. they are actually pretty nice, and drive quite well thanks Kind Sir!

Great video concept ruined by annoying music. sad
Well I like FF7's OST so I'll take your word's with a grain of salt. I'm open to other music suggestions considering you're the first person to complain about the song choice in these videos in 2 years.
