  • Dodonpachi is my favorite shmup, I have played it for over a thousand hours at this point. Due to wanting to demonstrate it at AGDQ or Shmupmania in the future, which do not allow emulation :-(, I decided to take an in-depth look at all the commercially released versions of the game and see how they stack up to the superb ShmupArch emulation.

    I remember back in the day the Saturn version getting higher marks for not having the slowdown. It's funny in retrospect. It makes me feel not as bad for struggling with the later stages. Saturn mode is killer though and love playing it.

    as someone who's very new to cave shmups i'm actually kind of interested in the saturn version specifically because of its differences... it seems to me like a lot of its big differences from the arcade original are both its weakness and its strength, like it's not accurate, but maybe it's a worthwhile version to play as its own unique thing so long as you also have access to a more accurate version as well.

    Most of Cave's earlier PCBs use odd refresh rates (something around 57 Hz). It wasn't until the CV1000 boards that they really started using something close to 60. Even the 360 and PS3 ports of Ketsui run about 7% faster than the PCB.

    other modern games: this game is cap 60fps! perfect!
    Shmup games: this games run entirely 60fps. so frustating!
    i know the slowdown suppose to make a time for player to read the bullet pattern before dodging and making the game less brutal and fair

    Personal favorite is Saturn for how unbelievably chunky it is and the Saturn Mode's first Stage along with the music sounding downright awesome.

    I love the Saturn Mode very much yes, I hate loops. Objectively, the Arcade Version is still on the very top in terms of intended functionality and balance. This video would definitely help M2's Shottriggers dev team once they get to bringing this mighty game to modern day consoles, they will release their game. Passionate fans will notice a few small errors and innaccuracies. Then a patch arrives and everyone's happy.
    also Campaign Version now.

    When I was first starting out I had no idea how to use MAME, so I downloaded the saturn version and ran it on retroarch with a bluetooth controller ... a few weeks later when I finally got shmuparch up and running I remember pushing a button, seeing how responsive it was, and realizing the first stage of the game wasn't actually impossible.

    I really don’t understand why people complain about slowdown in shmups. Unless you have played for years on a cabinet and based your routes around the pcb slowdown then fair enough but if you have only ever played ports ( most people) then why would you want your game to lag intentionally.

    At 8min the PS1 boss looks different from the other 3 versions. I suspect the PS1 and Saturn versions suffer from their native resolutions being different from the Cave hardware. I'd also be slightly wary of running PS1 games on a PS2 - it doesn't always perform exactly same - there can be differences between phat and slim PS2s as well. Not saying it makes a difference here but you have to consider it. I have the Saturn version and I enjoy it but I have to conclude that its differences are by design as it was coded by Cave. Weird that they did that though. But nowadays neither of the 32bit ports are worth paying for at current prices. For collectors only. Overall though ? My guess is for most players who aren't experts these ports are fun - but for those who know the chains really well and can 2-ALL the game ------ you will hate the ports. Biggest issue will be different native resolutions though - and the 2D handling of saturn probably doesn't help it wrt slowdown. We need M2 to port this!!!!

    I really don't think Cave had enough information to port their games...recall that their arcade division only had at the most 10 people from what we know. There's no way these oversights were intentional (considering that console hardware was much worse in the last 90s than today); the Instant Brain port was intended to be an easter egg, and the Saturn port has its own arrange.
    I just hope that the Exa platform gives Cave motivation to come back into the arcade market or at the very least funnel their efforts onto creating PC games/ports with the same level of quality (though I understand programming in the modern day is far different than how arcade ROMs were done)...yes, the Exa platform may be a walled garden - the point is that Cave is *trying* to do *something* instead of simply handing the keys off to a different group and walking away to...die? Not sure how I would word that...

    • @TheElectricUnderground
      @TheElectricUnderground  4 роки тому +4

      The reason why it might be considered intentional with the bees is that it is a basic function of the game that was incorrect in both the saturn and ps1 versions. How it could have been missed twice in the most basic of play testing is extremely hard to imagine. Any player would pick up on this within a minute into the first stage and they did use world class players names in the score screens. So I don t see how it s possible other than some insane coincidence or intentionally made, to keep the arcade version more relevant for chaining practice.

    When it comes to CAVE console ports before the 360, I think the only good one was PS2 DOJ. From the 360 onwards, the ports got a lot better, so it's a shame that the Instant Brain version sucked. Dodonpachi deserves a fantastic port, being the granddaddy of bullet hell shmups and a classic that still holds up very well today. Hopefully it is on M2's bucket list, but they're focusing on Toaplan shmups for now if I'm not mistaken.

    You can change the speed of the Saturn version by changing the clock frequency, you'd have to experiment to get your 57Hz output, and use a dual clock type setup so it doesn't render your Saturn useless to use for other stuff.
    The other thing is you can use the European region console and run it at 60Hz, it'll actually run about 3/4-1Hz slower than a US or Japan region console. It isn't enough to get you where you want, but it'll improve it a touch.
    You may be able to do the same with a Playstation, but i haven't ever adjusted clock oscilator frequencies on a Playstation since it selects 50Hz or 60Hz based on software region setting, the Saturn is hard wired to a specific frequency by default.

  • @arfink
    @arfink 4 роки тому +1

    Given your views on this game, have you attempted to run DDP in newer versions of MAME using a Gsync monitor and the new low-latency mode? Or have you tried GroovyMame's frame-delay? I think both of those options would give you the increased accuracy of a modern MAME version without having to sacrifice the extra frame of latency you enjoy in ShmupArch, but which comes with the reduction in accuracy that comes from using predictive frame-skip AKA run-ahead.

    • @TheElectricUnderground
      @TheElectricUnderground  4 роки тому

      Yes I have, I think the low lag mame version is solid as well. I still prefer to play on SA though, but both emulators are solid.

    • @arfink
      @arfink 4 роки тому +1

      @@TheElectricUnderground thanks for the reply. I myself really despise Retroarch from a UI and setup standpoint, so I find that the standalone MAME is better for me. Always nice to have options. Of course, I don't have enough time invested to really "feel" much difference in things like DDP, but can definitely notice for my most-played arcade game, Metal Slug. Of course, I'm spoiled because I have real hardware for that, but obviously Cave games are so stupidly expensive and impossible to find that there's no question of anyone actually going that route.

    Interesting comparison. One thing that is strange however is to not have a 'control' in this test. Even though you are saying ShmupArch is very accurate, its still not the same as the PCB. Even you have pointed out in other videos on your channel preconceived ideas about other game ports and versions are not always what we thought they were (Input lag testing, xbox 360 resolution testing etc...). I just find it strange to compare official ports against an emulated version. No bias, I dont care which port is best, just saying.
    Oh and one thing you didn't mention in the video in regards to accuracy is about output resolution. Even though the Saturn and PS1 ports are not perfect, you can atleast output through component cables to a standard def CRT in tate orientation at 240p. I guess that's not as important as gameplay accuracy, but as someone who is more casual than you, the resolution accuracy is very important.
    For me MiSTer ports of cave PCBs would be sublime. The potential for best gameplay accuracy in conjunction component/RGB output at 240 sounds unbelievable!!
    Great video, very detailed.
