  • This is part 1 of my new Arcade Stick Guide series. This video is also dedicated to my Patron Kwentn, who was happy to have this be his topic video for February. In this video, I give my advice on how to maximize your money for buying a quality arcade stick without overpaying. I also gush on about various arcade parts, because I'm a fanatic.

It is time to be a stick chad. I mean I love my keyboard skills but what would happen if i suddenly had the chance to go to one of those game center thingies in Japan? I'd game over instantly from the lack of stick fanesse!
I mean even that guy who wrote the "Full Extent of the Jam" guide to the process of practicing shooters had problems with a stick. Was a keyboard user too. I think his name was Prom or something, big figure in the community.

I ramble a bunch below but tldr: this video was essential for making my first fighting stick and I am loving it! Wanted to give my thanks for the awesome information you share. Also I am a Taeyoung Fanta Lever supporter now.
This video got me to commit to the jump into fighting sticks. Last year I got into fighting games with friends and been really enjoying it, but I wanted to experience the old arcade feel. I know you actually recommended against doing a custom stick, and I looked at several besides the ones you showed. Due to how particular I was about what I wanted, I went with a Gen 2 Clear Plexi DIY Kit. It really taught me how to build one, everything I needed, and lets me see cool custom art on top (and bottom when I figure out the art for that face).
I finally finished putting it together and testing today with the Brooks Universal PCB, Sanwa Buttons, and a Taeyoung Fanta lever (wanted to dive in with it off the bat)! It is so satsifying to put together and see work as a hands-on learner.
I am going to ease into using it like your other video suggests and oh boy is it an adjustment from console controllers. But I am having fun learning the different feel. I have Gurran Lagann artwork as the top face and super happy with how it came out.

I picked up an old Saturn HSS-0136 which had a Seimitsu LS-56 in it.
Liked it, tried a short throw mod with an octogate and really liked it.
I need a stick for my other consoles now - thanks for the tips, looks like a used HRAP is the way to go.

Excellent content. I just found your channel because I've just now decided to take shmups seriously, and I think you're utterly unique in providing an accessible pathway. Thanks for that.
One thing I'd like to add: theoretically, PS5 compatibility isn't a concern with PS4 sticks, since the console is already slated to be compatible with "almost all" PS4 titles in an unprecedented level of backwards compatibility. Presumably, that degree of compatibility will extend to peripherals like arcade sticks and wheels, since the reason for the "almost all" status of compatibility is architectural similarity, meaning it should be very easy to extend that compatibility to peripherals as well as games.

I'm with you on the Etokki stick, but I found it's travel was a little long for my needs, so I modded the hell out of mine to get it just so. I made the actuator sleeve (the bit that contacts the switch levers) bigger by winding scotch tape around it so it actuates sooner, got a shorter shaft and then reduced the distance the stick can travel so you aren't over-stressing the levers. It's also fairly loose. That's the great thing about almost all these sticks, you can easily tailor them to your needs.

This definitely had a wealth of information. I did try out the hori rap and then swap out parts but after a week I just got rid of it because the build wasn't what I wanted in a stick. I ended up getting a hori fighting edge which just felt very premium and felt like I didn't waste money on a case in my personal preferences. Then I swapped out the stick and buttons and have a setup I feel okay with and it feels great. I may swap the board out for brook eventually but I'm a PC player so I don't feel like I need to yet.

Have been playing around with the stock JLF for over a month (while waiting for mods to arrive ha!)
At stock it was always too soft with too long a throw for my liking..
    Mods arrived..
    2lb spring
    Kowal 1mm oversized actuator
    Battop
Now it feels tight and very precise thanks to the 2lb spring and Kowal actuator, which shortened the throw.
I only play 2D beat em ups and Shumups and the difference from stock is night and day!
I have the ‘Fanta taeyoung - hemi short collar’ to compare.
The Fanta feels awesome with the tightness of that rubber grommet but diagonals can get missed if you don’t engage firmly enough.
The tightness of the modded JLF feels about the same as a 35A-40A grommet for the Fanta.
Highly recommended parts for JLF owners wanting something that feels more precise and similar to Korean lever..
An ‘Octogate’ is not necessary, diagonals are quicker with the standard square gate and easier, while the throw is even slightly smaller by 1.5mm with square gate! 👍

Very useful video Mark! I bought at the end of 2018 a Mayflash Elite modding It with a LS-32. Great lever but the board eventually killed my experience with It, so i am playing with d-pad now. What makes me stop with giving another try is the incoming PS5 but if the Brooks board will be surely compatible via firmware I will reconsider my decisions 😅

I've played shmups since the 80's but only recently became properly interested in the genre despite being hopelessly bad, and your YT channel has been great. Naturally I'm now wanting a stick (I play PC, PS4, and Switch) and was thinking about the Razer Panthera for PS4 on special atm for USD175 but I'd have to import it into South Africa. My local game store has a Hori RAP 4 Kai though, but it's a bit pricey in SA (about USD220) and I thought I'd prefer the Razers Senwa versus the Horis Hayabusa stick/buttons. Not planning on modding at this point. But after your video I'm slightly hesitant on the Razer. Probably a while until I get a PS5 or stick really, with whats going on in the world atm

Got a few sticks here, but have weeded 1 of those out. I've settled on a Marvel Vs Capcom Infinite Razer Panthera with a removable cord and Sanwa parts for PS5 and the 8-Bit-Do Bluetooth NES stick for Switch. The Psikyo games are very playable with it, the Live Wire ports are excellent, Crimzon Clover, Infinite Burst, Psyvariar etc etc are all excellent.
I also have the Streetfighter Ryu Hori RAP for Switch. It's a wired stick and counter to what you'd expect it's actually laggier than the 8-Bit-Do - seemingly, the dock adds frame(s) of lag.
Hopefully this helps people make their decision when buying a stick.
I totally recommend the first 2.
I also had the Capcom Home Arcade and took a £20 hit on it to get rid of it. That thing is a mess - this giant Capcom logo that cost £200 (I paid £100 in a sale and sold for £80) and runs worse than the £30 Arcade Stadium.

Good stuff, Mark! I've been happy with my Mayflash F500 Elite so far, but I went specifically for the Elite stick because it had the Sanwa stick and buttons right from the factory, and wasn't that much more than the base F500. I would like to do a custom stick at some point, but this was what was in my budget to start with, for all the systems I wanted to connect to: PS3/4, Switch, 360 & PC. The one thing that bums me out about the Brooks Retro Board is that you can't do Genesis with it, due to how the Genesis is different enough from everything else, but at least I know I can take a beat up pad and try to do a pad hack for that. But the Universal and Retro board build will be costly, so your suggestion of a Hori PS3 stick base is good. Custom cases are expensive, and the price has scared me away from going that route for now.

I actually own this exact stick and can say that it's alright but not amazing. What is rather nice about it is that it's an absolute breeze to mod it or replace parts if you want to increase the quality. That's what I did to it, just used it stock and then upgraded the parts and got some cool art for it later on. After upgrading over the few years I've had it my only remaining issue is that the case isn't quite as wide as I might like. If you do end up keeping it and want to get some higher quality parts or get art/plexi etching done focus-attack's website is a great place to do that.
EDIT: I guess I should mention that the universal-ness of the PCB is pretty nice, I basically just use it for PC but if you play on multiple consoles that might be an important factor for you since not all sticks come with universal PCBs by default.

I have a standard f500 and, unlike the f300, it is a BREEZE to mod. My Seimitsu stick connected via the little 5 or 6 pin micro-ribbon connector, did not require a mounting plate adaptor at all and works flawlessly. The f300 was not mod-friendly, but the f500s ARE. My girlfriend has a more expensive Qanba Crystal (I know: she liked the pretty lights), and not only does the stick make a horrendous squeaking noise from the dust cover, but it has trouble connecting to even a PC without throwing tons of errors in Mame, Retroarch and anything other than a game that specifically supports it. The Mayflash, however, is supported on virtually every platform known to God and man - and flawlessly - heck, it even has a headphone jack which the Qanba does not. We bought my GF's brother an f500 elite for Christmas and he loves it. You have a great stick.
The only thing that would make it easier to mod would be if the guts were accessible via a quick flip switch - as it is, you have to take some screws out: like the majority of sticks.

No one ever seems to talk about this (probably because it's assumed knowledge), but what is the actual functional purpose of microswitches other than to make a clicking sound?

Hi, i'm relatively new to fighters and sticks. I LOVED this video of yours, it's the best on the topic on youtube (and I watch I think over 30 in the last 3 days?) so - thank you.
I'm in europe and finding a reasonably priced stick to enter this world is a mess. I would write a question in the comment section, but I think it would be too long and inappropriate... kinda? I wish I could ask you directly some advice, but if you tell me I can just comment below here, I can try. Thanks in advance in case you can try and answer

@@TheElectricUnderground thank youuu! I already kinda came to a conclusion, but I always like an informed second opinion. long story long (lol) :
i picked up tekken 7 with a friend recently, i'm really casual with fightign games, i barely played in the last 2 years and never before than. I play on pc and some times on switch. Right now i'm using the switch pro controller for fighters, but i don't fing myself too well with controller or keyboard, and I wanted to try stick. I picked up the mayflash f101 (40 euros) just to try it out, buying from amazon. I liked playing on a stick, but the thing bricked after 2 hours, trying to upgrade the firmware (the inputs would freeze for a second every now and again, and i thought it was a software problem. Updating it made it stop working entirely, doesn't even light up). Got another cheapo from amazon just to try the experience, i will return that as well due to various issue, but I can tell that i like stick, and I can get used to it (easier then keyboard for sure).
This is the premise, here comes the problem:
I'm in europe, so prices are kind of f'd up, and there is no point in buying anything used, as prices are often as high or higher then new, due to shipping or importation taxes. I've excluded mayflash since my experience and your video confirmed it. at first I thought about building a stick from scratch (i have experience in building things) but realized I would spend over 100 euros (110 to 130) so i thought: let me see what i can buy for that price: turns out i have 1 option basically: the Dragon Slay Universal Fight Stick, which apparently is a controversial product that was re-branded by mad catz as the EGO stick, and from another manufacturer as well. I could only find positive things about the stick, but too few information to think it's actually worth it. Still, 117 euros, full sanwa parts, pc switch ps4 and xbo compatibility, didn't sound too bad; until i thought about switching to a korean lever...
      Anyway. This option, 117, we'll say 120.
For 115 there's also the mayflash f500 elite (excluded due to mayflash) and... that's it.
The Qanba drone here costs 100 euros. Which is stupid.
And the Hori Rap (whatever version) goes for no less than 150 new or 130 second hand on ebay.
My conclusion was: if the Dragon Slay is worth it, it's the only thing that's worth it. But i don't know!
Do you know anything about this stick? I still think I won't get it... But I'd like to hear an opinion.
(anything else I haven't mentioned is above 150 or above 200 even)
I truly wanted something working on pc AND switch. So for now, I decided to try the Hori Fight Commander gamepad, which is 38 euros, and goes on the switch, and should have a better D-pad than the switch pro controller botth for switch AND pc.
The idea is I will slowly start building the case for a stick and buy parts as i go. I thought about getting a crown stick, which is probably the most convenient thing thinking about tekken7 as a main or top-2 fighting game i would want to play.
I still have a few concerns. I don't think I will attend any events anytime soon, mainly because of the pandemic, but also because of other factors. But eventually I would want to go to some local event. What platforms are used in live events and tournaments? How should I approach the compatibility factor? I really wouldn't want to spend too much on a PCB (I was looking into the brooks zero-PI for starters: it's cheap, solid, works on pc and switch - is it good? wrong?)
Also I have no idea about buttons but this is the least important problem.
Lastly, If you have any website, page, article, thread, anything to help someone on their first custom build, it would be great. I figured out what i need to get and how i need to put it together, but it's easy to miss out on something when you're new to it.
Thank you. I really appreciate you reading through this mess.

I can play on sanwa's but my goto is Semitsu. The main thing for me is the lower shaft and throw engage. Sanwa's feel looser and travel too much which is a big problem for me in tight bullet weaving situations. You can learn to go very light on the stick to compensate and make your movements feel more rapid, but I don't like having to work around issues when a solution exists. Actually, even with the LS-32 I feel like my engage could be shorter. Either by making the actuator larger or even shortening the shaft. I heard the LS-56 is more like this but the spec sheets seem to say otherwise.

Qanba sticks have never failed on me. I heard a rumor tho where on KoF13, only on QanbasQ4 people would get random button presses, but it was rare and no one figured it out.
Qanba Drone, Obsidian and Dragon are really solid sticks. Drone is IMO the best mini-stick in the market, better than any mayflash or madcatz alpha.
The infamous Razer stick insident happened on the Razer Atrox, those are not even sold anymore, the Razer Pantheras is a really solid stick, the EVO version is lesser but it's still descent. The only debacle is with Razer not selling the panthera's cable. People just need to take care of them.
Hori is the worst when it comes to input lag. Just trying any HRAP4 for ps3/ps4, or Hori Vewlix (Both the Black and Red+Black) have huuge amounts of input lag.
Then the OG Hori Edge with it's touch panel was a horrible idea, I own the White one and it's very uncomfortable, the ps4 hori edge fixed this issue.
Pretty much the only ones good Hori sticks are the HRAP N , HRAP 3 VXSA (360), HRAP3SA (PS3), HEdge (PS4) . Hori released a competitor to the qanba drone with NOIR layout but it never came here to the US.
Also when it comes to the UFB, there are EZ Mods bundles with the UFB available on arcadeshock so people can also have access to the touch panel and the rest of the menu buttons.

Yeah I never owned the hori ps4 sticks so I have no idea about them and that s why I didn t recommend the ps4 versions. I do know that the hori vxsa (the 360 stick) has excellent input lag response time. So that s why i recommend that one if playing unmodified but the ps3 versions if you want a cheap solid case and then swap on a brooks board. I m behind on the newer sticks like the quamba and razers, but I generally shy away from newer models because of the pricing.

I'm all over the place with arcade sticks. I have several arcade cabinets, and I like the sticks to be correct for the game, not what is most comfortable. My Popeye has a 4-way stick correct for the cabinet. Time Soldiers has to have LS-30 rotary sticks, and I swap in pcbs for Gondomania, Guerrilla War, Heavy Barrel, etc., and I even keep a Data East set of those sticks as well in case I want the round top that the Data East games used vs the octagonal SNK sticks. My Neo Geo MVS has Happ sticks like would be correct for the era, and so on.
When I build superguns or arcade sticks, I tend to mix it up. I'm nostalgic for the feel of Happ sticks, as a lot of my teen years in the early '90s had them, even though they are obviously not high quality, responsive levers. For fighting games, I like the Seimitsu sticks. For arcade sports games, I really like crappy loose Chinese levers like knockoff Zippy sticks.
I never shun my D-pads, either. I'm not a competition-level player at most games, but I like to keep versatile, even though some games I just can't do on controller... like Black Tiger. On arcade stick, 1cc, usually one life. On controller, it's a crap shoot. Guilty Gear X, I can crank up the difficulty all the way and 1cc with a stick, Dreamcast controller, or PS2 controller.
Just please don't ask me to play video games with a Gamecube controller. It makes me sad.

My Neo Geo AES, MVS, Dreamcast, and Saturn get my fighter time. That GC controller is just too cramped for my hands to the point of being uncomfortable to use for long, and I really don't like the C-stick nub and button layout... and that D-pad is horrifically tiny.
It's a subjective thing, though, and I can at least understand why some people adore it, whether nostalgia, hand fit, or how it suits a specific game. As for me, I'll take almost any controller over the Gamecube's. Maybe not a floppy Atari 5200 stick...

But if you give it a shot, and maybe set it to tournament rules (1v1, three stock, no items, since items are what make it feel like the “Mario Kart“ of fighting games) it can get as deep and nuanced as any fighter. I’m talking strictly about Smash Ultimate. The previous entries all had major flaws that would’ve kept them from being as competitive as I think they should have been. Razer sticks are garbage. I bought a PS4 Razer Panthera Evo and it doesn't work on PS4 anymore for no good reason. I use it on PC after swapping out buttons, but it was an annoying and expensive mistake.
