A Greenhouse is NOT a Natural Environment - How We Prepare For the Worst

- When we plant a year's worth of seedlings in our four season greenhouse, we need to keep in mind that a greenhouse is not a natural environment and our garden, where the seedlings will end up, will encounter pests, bad weather, and other unwanted problems.
To plan for the unknown, we keep in mind the three R's of food security: redundancy, resilience, and resistance.
Redundancy:
-plant more seeds than we need
-use multiple pest control measures
Resilience:
-save seeds from our plants that are adapted to our environment
-prepare the seedlings for the harsh outdoor environment
Resistance:
-replace food from the global food supply chain
-take stock of inputs from the global food supply chain

I will say, that the jalapeño peppers that I bought from you, ALL of them are doing much better than other jalapeño seeds that I planted ;) Love the fan tip! I will use it going forward! Great video! I cant wait for my greenhouse!

very thoughtful post full of valid lessons. Here's one for you. My grandfather lived in Sussex, New Brunswick. 6 times he won the national plowing championship. Large feat when your from little New Brunswick. He said that once the days start warming up, he would go out to the garden, drop his pants and sit down in the soil. If the soil was cool to the tush it's too cool for a seed. If he could comfortably sit there for a moment then it's time to plant. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

Yes to community building! I had way too many tomato seedlings, so all my neighbours are getting tomato plants. 😅 Good point about the genetics. It's nice to see snow, we just got another foot or so in Manitoba ☹️

You guys still have a few inches of snow. Ugh. It’s a nice sunny 70 degrees here in the Sierra foothills. Weeds are almost knee high. The kids love catching ladybugs. Every time they get one I tell them to let it loose in the greenhouse. I’ve never had an easy time finding and buying ladybugs but they are out in force right now and they’re free.
Snow snow snow....maybe by June it will be gone! 😂 Keep those kids busy with the big collection, George! Cheers buddy

I really need to learn how to preserve seeds from my veggies. Some are easy. But some are harder. Carrots for example. I am always so tempted to pick them all up but got to keep some in the soil for the following year lol

Am very appreciative of the thought processes behind and effort you put into your recent series of videos. I look forward to further content on such topics and learning of your local strategies for addressing the 'opportunities' that you have identified.
I thought to share a viewpoint for your consideration. Initially when I thought of establishing a 'self/community sufficient' lifestyle, my default frame of reference was identification and realization of ways and means of replicating (more or less) my now current life situation in challenging times. I have since come to think of the term somewhat differently. Specifically, my interpretation of the word 'sufficient' has changed. I have sought to develop a new definition of what constitutes a 'sufficient' lifestyle ... one which addresses the basic hierarchy of needs while offering an adequate level of life satisfaction. I now base my preparedness efforts on addressing that lowest common denominator lifestyle profile. Achieving anything beyond that is a bonus. Perhaps you and who those who follow you have already tweaked their frame of reference accordingly. For those that have not yet considered it, I offer the perspective for what it may be worth.
You make good points here. understanding that there is a limitation to what you can produce yourself and get from your community is the first step. Determining what your baseline is and working towards securing that, is a good way to move forward from there 👍

Just like when you go to the store what's the definition of an heirloom seed you have no proof unless you're looking under a microscope of what that seed is trust who you're buying it from and collect your own seeds from your crop
Hi, great information! I’ve recently found you and have been binge watching your videos. My wife and I live near Peterborough ON and have been hear for 20 years. Our property taxes are always rising to where they are now $3600 annually for a home that is too big for us and on a one acre lot in a farming/cottage community. I am wondering what your property taxes roughly are in the North in an unorganized township? Thank you.
