The high accident rate was mainly because there was no trainer version and pilots were inexperienced at jets and a swept wing device. Landing the 29 was difficult and caused many crashes e.g. due to adverse yaw which occurred with flaps at more than 30 degrees.
I can’t remember where I read this but some USAF F-86 pilots who flew the Tunnan found it to be a superior fighter in some respects and it was a popular aircraft with it’s users. I’ve always liked it’s looks, tubby but very pugilistic. SAAB’s designs are always attractive with the Draken being my favorite.
It was an excellent fighter, but I also believe it was pretty hard to fly.
Thank you for using untertitels and no computer voice. Good work. Always thought these "things" were useless. The only thing we did was making fun of it bc. of the form and the name. But as it seems - like the Saab Draken - very good plane for the time. So it seems like my country did the right choice in buying them. Our problems started from going away from swedish fighters and buying the Eurofighter instead of the Saab Gripen. Political decision, not a military descision. As history tells always a problem when politics are involved. So we have this old Tranch 1 german Eurofighters nobody wants to buy from us, sticking like bubblegum in the hair. Greetings from Austria.
Tunnan is the only jet fighter I've seen that actually has a windscreen wiper on the front screen! And on ground the air inlet to the jet engine was to be closed with a round wooden lid, which greatly contributed to the knickname "tunnan"=barrel.
It was also a dangerous plane for mechanics...
A barrel with wings🙂
Very much so
Your channel and choice of videos are superb. The choice to caption each scene instead of narrating is excellent. Your production values are excellent, your source material and chosen soundtracks are all excellent too. You deserve many thousands more subscribers and views.
Thank you! ! I’m happy if it is of value to you.
Most of the early jets looked pudgy because the diameter of the first centrifugal motors were much larger than the size of their tailpipes compared to axial flow engines as the ME-262 used.
This is very true, although it feels like the J-29 was particulary pudgy.
MESSERSCHMITT P-1101 !!!
Actually FW 183 V3(Other name is FW 252). Steal design with centrifugal engine.
👍🏻
I’ll looks very similar to the foke wulf ta-183
The design was actually partly based on the German Messerschmitts Me P1101, P1110, P1111 och P1112.
