    Thanks for posting this, Eric. This was the video that was made shortly after the Mark V model 510 was introduced in 1985. At the time Casey was the Academy Instructor at the Shopsmith Woodworking Academy at the factory in Dayton, a job that I would take over in 1989. Sadly, Casey passed away at the age of 62 in 2019, having caught Legionaries Disease while working as a custodian at a High School in Kettering, Ohio, just outside of Dayton.

      Thought I had seen all the different videos on alignment procedures, until coming across this one. Still trying to find instructions on how to properly align the 520 rip fence. Mine toes in on the out feed end by 4-5 thousandths. Would like it to be square or toe out a few thousandths. Tried loosening the top four screws and aligning it but doesn't seem to work. If anyone has experience with this or knows where I could find instructions it would be appreciated. Thanks for sharing. Curt.

      @@curttundra Hey Curt, the trick is to loosen three of the machine screws, not four. With one of the screws tight it gives you something to pivot on and the fence won’t slip back out of alignment as you tighter the other screws. Scott

      I met Casey at a Shopsmith show - smart guy and a really nice fella when I bought my mark 5. I'm sorry to hear of his passing and how it happened. RIP Casey.....

      That school probably had a suspiciously high paste wax budget but the eraser dusters were always calibrated

    Thanks for sharing. I just bought a used 510 in very good shape with original VHS video's which are largely unuseable these days. Look forward to tuning it up and using it.

    Myself im relatively new to the Shopsmith too... I have all my manuals for the machine but im more of a hands on kind of guy.. I found this video to be more informative than the manual. Thanks Eric for the posting.

    This is a great video. Needs to be redone with multiple and better camera angles. The narration is smooth and spot on. It should be part of a series that people are aware of when they buy a used Shopsmith. The reason people sell Shopsmiths is because they never learn how to use them. I hope with the new owner,who seems to listen, these things will be addressed.

    Lol, when I bought my 80's 510 (apparently upgraded from 505) a few years ago, it came with two video cassettes, one of which was alignment. Alas, it was Beta max and I had long ago deep-sixed a beta max I had gotten a yardsale

    This is exactly what I was looking for. My Mark V 510 looks to be in very good shape overall. No mouse poo but lots of mud dauber nests. Haha. Pests are regional I guess.
    Mine did not come with a manual (have one ordered) but did have about 8-10 VHS tapes. (Mid 1990s model.) Heck, this video could be one of them for all I know. I suppose I could find a VHS player at a pawn shop…….
    Excellent video. Very impressed with his ability to speak clearly and methodically throughout the demonstration.

    I've always had an issue getting the table (miter slots) to align with the blade. When I loosen the mounting bolts, the in-feed side of the table has some play in it, but the out-feed side does not. There's not enough play on the in-feed side to get things lined up correctly. It's close, but when I rip a long board, one end is wider than the other. I suspect it's the slight angle of the table to the blade. Should there be some play in the out-feed mounting holes or am I missing something else? I've had this issue since I bought the SS in the late 90's and have just lived with it until now, but as I try to get a little more precise in my projects. Thanks in advance.

    Great video to get a good idea of what all needs done, but the vid quality is lacking - looks like a video from the 70s on film. Needs a higher res video to distinguish all the adjustment hardware. PS - I just read thru some comments. Thanx for posting. Just hope they have a new vid with a higher res. It's due.......

    video is very informative, but if there is a book that explains this he should of shown these procedures as described in the book, it greatly helps alleviate any confusion on procedures, I am New user, just watching some videos to help under stand the uses, and setup, i have no manuals. Sorry to here he passed away, very nice accurate explanation of how too. even for a guy who has never even turned it on yet. Still cleaning the Mouse poo from inside the parts. it is like New other wise. I was wondering what those tube where for, found a bag of those. Now i know.

      Scrapy 5672 I have all the complete manuals and then some. If you give me an email address I could upload anything that you need that you cant find on Shopsmith.com . If you haven't already, I recommend following @MyGrowthRings located in the comment directly above you. I promise you wont walk away from any episode of his without learning which is always important. Also Recommend Doug Reid and Jim Sevilla

    Just purchased my shopsmith mark V from an elderly gentleman who had 3. I noticed that the speed adjustment is very hard to turn. Any ideas?

    dont know if i missunderstood but in the maintenance part he talks abput setting speed to high then turn off? i thought you must always go to lowest speed before turning off. do you have to then turn the spindle by hand whilst adjusting the speed(before turning back on) or is this unessesary? thanks great video otherwise

    • @richardg3232
      @richardg3232 10 місяців тому

      You have to turn it to high speed setting to access that hole for lubrication. So, it's an exception to the normal rule of turning on and off at slow speed. I guess doing this once and turning on at high speed won't destroy the machine. But, in general, turn off and on at low speed.

    • @twestgard2
      @twestgard2 2 роки тому +3

      This isn’t any different from any other machine that does the same things. There are many cheaper, less adaptable machines that aren’t built to be adaptable, so they have only one setting that you better like, because it’s the only one available.

      @@twestgard2 This is correct. A tool that doesn’t need alignment and adjustment to be accurate is a pipe dream. A tool that doesn’t allow the user to align and adjust it is a nightmare.
