Your channel is among the best out there for Spanish learning, and I’ve seen dozens. I’m not an expert, but I’m pretty sure the biggest obstacle for learning a language is not nailing the accent, but learning basic grammar and vocabulary, especially for beginner and intermediate. These are the vast majority of viewers. The subtleties of mastering Spanish pronunciation probably only comes with practice, listening courses, and immersing yourself in the language. One could go on and on about how this comment is wrong, but the bottom line is, there’s one in every crowd.

I am speechless by the note Tom M left in your comments. I am a native Spanish speaker and I learned English with a French accent, and somehow a UK accent as well, I was able to communicate with English speakers well despite my accent. I think being that picky about expecting native speakers to teach a language is just absurd. You live in Mexico and Mexicans are not picky about accents as long as you can communicate somehow with them. You are doing a very good job of teaching Spanish and I love your accent which matches your awesome personality. I admire those who try to learn another language and those that share their experience while they were learning. You are doing a great job! Don't stop, plz.

And your third reason to keep the channel is that you’ve broken through to the point of being fluent and you know what is necessary to get there. I recall times when my native speaking teachers couldn’t understand why I wasn’t able to grasp a concept or pronounce something correctly. They couldn’t put themselves in my shoes. So while most of my teachers have been native speakers I also benefit from learning from a native english speaker. Let me give you an example. There are words that I just couldn’t pronounce correctly. I learned a trick. When that happens start pronouncing the word in syllables but start with the last syllable and keep adding on the previous syllable. Let’s use afortunadamente as a simple example. I kept screwing it up so the exercise I taught my native language speaking teacher was say it like this a few times mente; amente; damente; nadamente; tunadamente; fortunadamente; afortunadamente. I had to reteach my brain before it came out smooth and fast and not some english version of this word. I know to this day my spanish teacher uses this method when students encounter trabalenguas. Keep up the good work and I think you honor the spanish language and culture by your efforts to help others who may not learn spanish otherwise.

OMG! This video got me a bit riled up! At the guy who commented and inspired this video of course. I'm a 48 year old gringa who has gotten pretty serious about learning Spanish in the last two years. I have literally Googled, "How is the best way for older people to learn Spanish." I've searched the same thing on UA-cam. I am constantly looking for any and all ways to improve my learning capabilities because it is harder to learn as an adult. I found your Spanish videos, and loved them!! I need to know tips and tricks for non-native speakers. I do take weekly lessons online from a native speaker, and she often has to type out the words so I can see them because I can't make two cents out of her "accent." I mention that because some of the time, learning from a native speaker is hard. I need to be able to see or spell the word in my head before I worry about accent and pronunciation. One time, I was watching one of your Spanish videos and my husband walked in, stopped, and said, "Wow. This guy is a really good teacher. Is that his profession?" That is exactly why I watch your Spanish videos: because the method works with my brain, age, etc... I will worry about the accent after I can understand what I am hearing, reading, and trying to communicate. Keep up the good work! I also love your expat videos!

I realize my accent since I began learning Spanish in my 40’s and many of those I pay closest attention to are native speakers. Nevertheless, if ANYONE wants to learn another language, they MUST take advise from those who have done it and are surviving if not doing excelente. Well, I have heard some Hispanic Spanish teachers who also teach English but not that much of how they learned and some tricks along the way. Hey Paul, all of my spanish speaking friends tell me they find it sexy to hear a gingo or ginga specking spainish with an american accent! I am a ginga who can speak spanish. Your accent is beautiful. You sound like a native speaker to me. Has the person that wrote the comment ever heard a Cuban, Dominican or someone from Argentina speak spainish? I have friends from all over the spanish speaking world. Your fans all love you Señor Paul. You speak clearer than a lot of my Mexican friends. Keep up the good work. I just subscribed to your lifetime membership! I am referring lots of people your way!!! Peace, Love, and more qroo Paul !!!

Great video! I love how you responded. As a gringo I have a surprisingly minimal accent (I've been complimented that I sound Mexican when I speak) but I've been speaking Spanish to some degree since I was a kid in a prodominanly Mexican community in SoCal. I find value in many different teachers because each provide a different perspective and at times I prefer gringo instructors for the exact reason you cited, you can relate to the challenges an English speaker will run into and talk about how you addressed it or learned. Another UA-camr that I love is The Spanish Dude and he has a heavy gringo accent but he helps to see the language in a way that can help an English speaker understand better than a native could. Sometimes things that confuse us make no sense to native speakers so his and your perspectives are invaluable! Thanks for the great content!

I get that people are jealous of others' talents and abilities when they're feeling insecure about their own. I commend you for being so kind and crafty to answer in such a genteel fashion that essentially says what I'd say in two words (o tres palabras en español). 😁👏💪🙏☮️ Bendiciones!

In fact, I am often mistaken for a Mexican both on the phone and when in Mexico...I do not look Mexican at all. Further, when we were in Spain my wife and I had heck of a time, and again, she is native born and raised in Mexico. Keep it up Qroo...

Qroo Paul, I never leave comments but I felt compelled this time. I am a gringo sailboat cruiser and spend my winters traveling through Latin America. I am not very talented at learning languages and have tried many methods of learning Spanish, including many UA-cam channels. I have to say yours is the best I've come across. Your approach of teaching phrase patterns is the most effective method I found for bringing my Spanish up to the next level and the experience you bring to the process is well thought out and presented and is extremely relevant to me. I think your accent is excellent and as good as it gets for a non-native speaker, so keep producing your excellent videos, because they are very helpful and we love them. Thanks Dan..

I agree with your comments about accents: learning languages as an adult entails an accent. I like to think of it like this: when you live in a place all your life, you often never visit "siteworthy" spots. (say, the Statue of Liberty in New York or the Domus Aurea in Rome). In the same way, a non-native speaker can sometimes provide critical information that a native speaker might have trouble articulating. Keep up the good work, Paul. You've earned your beer money!

That was pretty hilarious. I just sent a link to your video to a couple of gringo friends of mine who are Professors of Spanish at a large, state university. I hope it's not too late for them to go back and pick up a different Ph.D. I also sent it to my wife who has, unfortunately, been taking Spanish classes from those same professors and their colleagues - several of whom are also gringos. My wife does have a PhD in English. One would think she would have seen the problem of taking a foreign language from someone other than a native speaker. I suppose she'll have to start over.
But, trying to be useful, maybe: "Qroo Paul's Dance Lessons?" I think that would be noncontroversial.
As always, I absolutely love your videos. They are among the best out there.

Hi Qroo, PLEASE continue with your channel and teaching Spanish. I began learning Spanish in high school and that was decades ago. I picked it back up after getting involved with salsa dancing. I got stuck with the subjunctive and you explained it so well that I finally felt more confident in my Spanish learning capability. My husband is Mexican (my salsa dancing partner) so I practice with him and have him check my answers from some of your quizzes. I especially like the fact that you teach from a native English speaker's perspective (which I am) so I feel that I am in good company. I was in Mexico a couple of months visiting my husband's family and if I knew of some of your techniques, my Spanish speaking would have been better. So, please keep the lessons going! Hasta luego.

Hahahahahaha. Paul you made my day. Ok, I am certainly not teaching Spanish, however I am learning it from you in a very clear and fun learning environment. I don't expect to lose my "gringo" accent after all I am a foremost English speaker and learning Spanish as I get ready to retire. I travel yearly to Spain and as lousy as my accent is, I am understood wherever I have traveled which has been extensively over the country. My first visit to Spain was by a rented BMW motorcycle on a solo trip. I spent several days in the village of Alájar where I encountered few English speakers and heck, they all lived through my bad Spanish. Since then with your help I have improved. Don't ever quit after all, beer money is a good thing!

I am living in Ecuador and have been studying Spanish for 3 months. I have a Ecuadorian Spanish teacher I meet twice a week for 2 hours and she is a really great teacher and I’ve made a lot of progress in 3 months and get compliments from her and other native speakers on my pronunciation. But it is also very helpful to learn from non-native speakers like you. You understand how a native English speaking person is trying to process learning Spanish. Even my Ecuadorian teacher refers me to watch videos to have concepts explained in a comprehensive way to help me understand.
I just recently discovered your channel and it is already one of my top 3 favorite channels to watch for learning Spanish.
